Kansas City volleyball media guide Season Preview With a young but experienced nucleus, the 2013 Kansas City volleyball team is primed for a big season in their first year in the Western Athletic Conference. Head Coach Christi Posey enters her third season at the helm with five returning starters and the libero, including 2012 Summit League All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-League honoree Emma Hagedorn. “Our team enjoyed a productive pre-season,” Posey said. “There was quality time spent on the court in skills and system work, but the most important development was learning more about each other and determining our team dynamic. We credit our returning players with helping our newcomers quickly understand the expectations of our program and what it means to be a Roo!” With a roster that features only one player with more than one year of experience in the Blue & Gold in senior Chloe Jarema, Posey knows the ‘Roos will have a lot of room to grow as a team this season. On the sideline, third year coach Trent Jones was promoted to Associate Head Coach this offseason, while Graduate Assistant

Coach Kalani Rose and Student Assistant Coach Amanda Guess join the staff this season. As a group, the coaches know that the team will have to start the season strong in preseason competition and continue it throughout the WAC schedule. “Our preseason schedule will certainly challenge our young squad,” Posey added. “We believe it will help us prepare for the different styles of play that we expect to see in the WAC. “

SETTERS Setting up the offense this season will be sophomore Nicole Wemhoff and freshman Kaylyn Brandt. Kansas City native Wemhoff returns for her second season as a Kangaroo after starting 27 matches a season ago and leading the team with 732 assists. Brandt, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of Sumner, Iowa, where she was named Iowa 2A Second Team All-State as a senior after setting the school record with 730 assists. “Our setters are hardworking and determined,” Posey said. “The two of them complement each other extremely well. Even

20 1 23

though they are young our team is in good hands with the duo.”

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS In the back row, the ‘Roos return the sophomore pair of Taryn Miller and Lindsay Zych, while freshman JoAnna Muenks will provide depth to the squad. Miller, who will spend a majority of the time at libero for the 2013 ‘Roos, finished last season with a team-high 540 digs, the fourth most in school history, while her 34 aces were tops in The Summit League. Like Miller, Zych appeared in all 30 matches a season ago, finishing second on the team with 245 digs, including a season-high of 18 twice. Muenks, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of Westphalia, Mo., where she helped Fatima High School to the Missouri 2A State Championship in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2011. “Our defensive specialists are skilled, vocal and above all fearless,” Posey said. “They provide more energy for us than any other spot on the court.”

MIDDLE HITTERS

At the net, the ‘Roos will feature a trio in the middle that includes sophomore returnees Emma Hagedorn and Skyler Muff, as well as Missouri transfer Melissa Hartsel. In 2012, Hagedorn finished with 235 kills and a team-high 94 blocks, leading to a spot on The Summit League All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-Summit League honors. Muff, who also returns for her second season in the Blue & Gold, finished last season with 226 kills and 77 blocks, while earning a spot on both the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic and Runnin’ Bulldog Classic All-Tournament Teams. Hartsel, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of instate rival Missouri where she appeared in 17 matches for the Tigers with eight starts in 2012. “Our middles are strong and physical players,” Posey said. “They are an athletic and versatile group that represents our most experienced position.”

OUTSIDE HITTERS On the outside, the ‘Roos fea-

6

ture a veteran group of hitters who will provide a bulk of this season’s offensive output. Senior Chloe Jarema, the ‘Roos lone fourth year player, finished 2012 with 75 kills, 35 digs and 35 blocks, while fellow upperclassmen Morgan Voorhes enters her second year at Kansas City after appearing in 23 matches with 28 kills, including a career-high 11 against Delaware State. In the sophomore class, Jessica Hendin enters her second campaign in the Blue & Gold after notching 225 kills and 235 digs, while being named to the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic All-Tournament Team. Fellow sophomore Sydney Crimmins will hold down the right side for the ‘Roos in 2013 after finishing 2012 with 135 kills, 70 blocks and 52 digs. Joining the Kangaroos in 2013 will be freshman Taylor Buhrow, who was named to the Iowa 2A First Team All-State after setting school single season records in kills, hitting percentage, kills per set and aces. Fellow freshman Meagan Kerns, meanwhile, will miss the 2013 season after a knee injury in the offseason. During her prep

career, the Anthon, Iowa, native was honored as an Iowa 2A First Team All-State selection after recording a school record 1,423 kills in her career. “We have a great variety of talented and skilled offensive weapons,” Posey said. “There is a quality mix of strength, finesse and shot making ability from this group.”

SCHEDULE The ‘Roos, who will be entering their first season in the Western Athletic Conference, open the season with three preseason tournaments, including hosting the Kangaroo Klassic on Sep. 13-14. “Our players are excited to travel and compete in the Western Athletic Conference this year,” Posey said. “Any change provides opportunity for growth in a program. Despite not knowing a lot about our new conference opponents, we look forward to the challenge of making our mark.” The conference slate will be a 16-match, home-and-home, round robin format between the nine members of the WAC, including first-year members Chicago State, CSU Bakersfield,

“Beginning our third season at UMKC, we thought it was important to seek a more competitive non-conference schedule,” Posey added. “Traveling to Arkansas and Maryland for tournaments and hosting Kansas in early September will definitely bump up our competition level.”

In his three seasons, Jones produced 12 All-GLVC selections, four All-Region selections and an AllRegion Freshman of the Year honoree. Although Jones oversees many aspects of the program, his work with the middle attackers produced an AllLeague performance from freshman, Emma Hagedorn. Jones also coordinates blocking schemes and team defense. “We are thrilled to be able to promote Trent to Associate Head Coach; it demonstrate our appreciation for his expertise and dedication.” Posey said.

Prior to heading the UMSL program, Jones served as First Assistant at Washburn University from 2004-2008, helping the Lady Blues to a 12923 record during his time on the bench. In 2007, Washburn made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Final Four after achieving a school-record 35-3 record in 2005. Under his guidance, the Lady Blues placed seven players on the all-American team. From 2002-04, Jones served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Kansas where he helped guide the squad to its best season in school history and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003. As a collegiate student-athlete, Jones was a member of the Columbia College men’s team, where he led the Cougars to the 2000 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship. The new UMKC Assistant Coach also spent 1998-1999 and 2000-02 as a member of Graceland University volleyball team where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History with an emphasis on Civil Rights in 2002.

CATALINA SUAREZ -- NO. 8, NUMBER RETIRED OCT. 31, 1996 UMKC produced one of the greatest collegiate volleyball players of all time when Catalina Suarez donned a Kangaroos’ uniform from 1988—89. And on Oct. 31, 1996, UMKC retired the No. 8 in her honor. She joins former basketball player Ronnie Schmitz as the only two UMKC student-athletes to have their uniform number retired. Suarez transferred to UMKC following the 1986 season after a twoyear stint with the University of Kansas. After sitting out the 1987 season, she finished her career at UMKC from 1988—89. In 1989, she was named first-team all-Mideast and was an honorable mention all-American. She received UMKC’s David B. Milner Award in both 1988-89 and 1989-90, which is presented to the department’s most

inspirational athlete. She was also a member of the Colombian national team for four years and served as the captain for three years. The decision to retire Suarez’ number was made by the UMKC Special Recognition Committee, which was composed of selected members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. In 2008, Suarez was selected to the inaugural UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame, where she was officially inducted on Dec. 5. Suarez still ranks at or near the top of several Division I national record charts.
