3 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 4 CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON TITLES Kansas City men’s soccer is on the rise again. The coaches and players are extremely optimistic going into the 2013 season, and with good reason. They return nine starters from a team that finished second in their final year as a member of the Summit League. They also know that there is plenty of room for improvement on the 7-10-2 overall record. Head Coach Rick Benben, entering his 16th season at the helm, said he and Associate Head Coach Fred Schlichting went to work as soon as last season was over in several areas. “Well first, we feel like we had a very productive spring season,” Benben said. “Individually many players improved, and as a team we made a lot of strides with where guys fit into the lineup more effectively.” The coaching staff also hit the recruiting trail hard. They added 12 new players to the roster, looking to upgrade the starting lineup, and increase the competition in every spot. “With losing only a few players, we wanted to get the best players we could.” Benben said. “Positionally, we improved the team in every area. I think will be reflected in the talent of this incoming class.” Benben said UMKC will depend on the solid base of experienced players to provide stability and leadership, namely junior defender Michael Oakley, senior defender Guerrero Pino, and junior forward Jordan Rideout. The ‘Roos have also added more experience on the coaching staff, as former English Premier League star Paul Rideout (father of Jordan Rideout) returns for another season. New to the staff this year is goalkeeper coach Alan Mayer, who played professionally for 16 years, was a member of the U.S. National Team, and has several years as a top coach. “Fred and I really continue to work towards having a top Division I program.” Benben said. “I think having Alan on the staff is huge for us. Paul really added a lot to our staff last year and has worked well with our attacking players. There is certainly a bigger comfort level for him to contribute even more this year.” The ‘Roos will need that experience and added depth from both players and coaches with the move to the Western Athletic Conference. The team will now play league games more frequently (two in three days each week), plus a number of the schools have a history of success and bring a much higher level of play. PAGE

4

“We are really excited and anxious about it. “ Benben said of the WAC. “We know a little bit about the teams and we’re looking forward to being part of a really good Division I soccer conference.” Kansas City is one of five WAC schools that play in cities with MLS teams and their accompanying development academies nearby (Houston, Colorado, Seattle, San Jose, Kansas City). Also, when you add metro areas like Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Bakersfield to the mix, it makes for very fertile soccer recruiting grounds at all eight schools.

The Forwards

Kansas City has a proven finisher at the forward position in Rideout, who comes into the season with 14 goals to rank 12th on the all-time scoring list. What the ‘Roos are looking for is a running mate up top, as each of UMKC’s formation choices will likely include two forwards. If some other players step up, the coaches feel it could have a breakout season in the scoring department. “We think we are really close.” Benben said. “That is our biggest emphasis this year. We need to create more chances.” The coaches feel sophomore Broc Cramer could make an impact at striker. They also think returners like senior Zach Balthazar, junior Sylvester Yiadom, or senior Tom McCarthy will contribute to the attack, whether it be in the midfield or up top. UMKC also brought in some new players that could make an immediate impact at forward, including Brazilian Tato Chiaparro, a junior transfer from Lewis & Clark Community College. He scored 14 goals and added 13 assists last season. Another is 6-foot-4 Australian Patrick Foley, who is one of four players on the roster that came to UMKC from Tyler Junior College. He helped the team to a national title last year. The final new forward is freshman Wes White, who was a highly rated recruit from Oak Grove, Mo. by way of Sporting KC Academy. He came into camp trying to rehab an injury, so only time will tell if he is able to impact the 2013 season.

The Midfielders

The midfield might be the deepest position on the roster as 15 guys will compete for time there. The lineup will also depend on if the ‘Roos play a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 formation. Junior Ashley Reece led the squad with four assists last season, playing mostly outside midfield. He is expected to be a frontrunner for a spot, while McCarthy, Cramer, Yiadom, Balthazar, sophomore Roberto Albuquerque and senior David Coulter all return to the lineup with multiple starts under their belts. “I think that we made a lot of progress in the spring as far as returning players defining roles.” Benben said. “We certainly expect all the returning guys to be in the mix, but there is really going to be stiff competition coming in as well.” One of those expected to make an immediate impact is sophomore transfer Derek Schrick, who comes back to Kansas City after playing last year at SMU. A native of KC, he played high school at Rockhurst. Also in the mix will be freshmen Clay Stewart, David Stoll, and Austin Wilcox, along with Rockhurst transfer Alioune Gueye. Redshirt freshman Stephen Koeller junior Asher Herbet, and senior Andres Aristizabal will also get a chance to earn minutes. Stewart comes in as a highly ranked recruit and was the Kansas State Player of the Year at Olathe South High School. Stoll helped Chaminade College Prep in St. Louis to a state runner-up finish as a senior, while Wilcox was one of seven players on the UMKC roster to play for Sporting KC Juniors. Gueye and Koeller redshirted last season for the ‘Roos, getting the chance to practice with the team for a full year. Aristizabal will battle for time after spending the last two years in the program. “I really think its going to be who plays fast, early and smart.” Benben said of who will make the midfield rotation.

The Defenders

Kansas City has established leaders on the defense with Oakley and Pino in the middle, as well as another experienced starter in senior Jeffrey Stezovsky outside. “We are certainly happy with the progress that Pino, Oakley and Stezovsky made in the spring.” Benben said “We feel like they will provide a good nucleus in defense. “ Oakley was a first-team all-conference selection a year ago, while Pino was voted the team MVP. Stezovsky was named to the AllNewcomer team in the league as a freshman, but has battled injuries each of the past two seasons, keeping him from a full year on the field. The final spot on the defense is up for grabs if the ‘Roos decide to play four in the back. Coulter, and senior Diego Figueroa both started games there last year, and will have the opportunity to do so again in 2013, but they will be pushed by freshmen Jake Carter and Kyle Vassar. Senior Robert Barkoff will provide depth to the outside back position as well.

Carter was a high school teammate of Cramer at Wichita Northwest High School, helping the team to an undefeated state title as a junior. He also excelled on the track team there. Vassar played with fellow freshman Stewart at Olathe South, helping the team to three conference titles. “We have really good competition next to those guys in the back.” Benben said. “The incoming freshmen will get their chance battle with the returners for a spot.”

The Goalkeepers

Goalkeeper is another area that will see a position battle as senior Kevin Corby will compete with junior transfer Chris McGaughey for the starting nod. “We feel like Kevin and Chris give us two talented goalkeepers.” Benben said. Corby returns for his third season at UMKC, and has shared time in the net each year. He has 12 starts and 16 matches played with a 1.44 goals against average and 75 saves to his credit. McGaughey comes to UMKC from Tyler Junior College, where he was a two-time first-team All-American. He helped the team record a 0.40 goals against average on route to a 21-2-2 record. “We feel very fortunate to have Chris in our program.” Benben said. “He comes here after a phenomenal year at Tyler and was highly recruited.” Also on the roster is redshirt Colby Martin, who transferred to UMKC from Coastal Carolina after playing in high school locally at St. Thomas Aquinas in Kansas.

The WAC Men’s Soccer Format

UMKC will play in the East Division along with Houston Baptist, Air Force and Grand Canyon. The West Division includes CSU Bakersfield, San Jose State, Seattle and UNLV. Teams in the same division play eachother twice (home and away), while crossing over to play the teams in the other division one time. The regular season champion will be decided by points, regardless of division (win = 3 pts, tie = 1 pt). The WAC Tournament will have seven teams (Grand Canyon not eligible), with seeds decided by points. The No. 1 seed recieves a first round bye. The winner of the conference tournament receives the WAC’s auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.

3 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 4 CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON TITLES

HC

Rick Benben SIU Edwardsville, 1973 16th Season

The longest tenured and most successful coach in UMKC men’s soccer history, Rick Benben is entering his 16th season at the helm of the Kangaroos. He was inducted into the UMKC Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2012. Under his guidance, UMKC has captured four conference regular season soccer titles and has made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup with the most recent appearance coming in 2008. Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era, begins the 2012 season with 112 wins to his credit, and he has had more than 84 student-athletes earn allleague recognition and 16 players be named to all-region squads. Post season play has been a norm in Benben’s career, as he has guided the ‘Roos to the league tournament in 13 of his 15 seasons on the sidelines. The 2012 squad finished second in its final season in the Summit League after posting a 5-2 mark. They rebounded from a slow start to post a streak of six consecutive games unbeaten, the longest since 2003. It posted a 7-10-2 overall record and tallied three players on the All-Summit League First-Team, as well as Jordan Rideout being named All-Region at forward. In 2011 the ‘Roos posted a 5-9-3 overall mark after losing several key players from the season before. Despite that, the ‘Roos managed to make progress throughout the season, including a win over Pac-12 opponent Oregon State on the road. UMKC finished 2-2-2 in conference play, just a point shy of qualifying for the league tournament. He also coached the Summit League Freshman of the Year (Jordan Rideout) and two first-team allleague selections, as well as two members of the All-Newcomer Team. Benben led the Kangaroos to their fourth regular season conference championship in 2010, posting a 10-5-3 overall record, and a 4-11 mark in league play to earn Summit League Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The ‘Roos PAGE

led the conference in both goals (1.28 pg) and goals against average (0.80 pg). Kangaroos In The Pros Former UMKC men’s soccer player Geoff Miles helped the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC) to a 2-1 win over Mexican Primera Division side Atlas AC de Guadalajara on Friday, July 10, 2008 at Community America Ballpark. The former Kangaroo replaced midfielder Lance Watson just before stoppage time, with the Wizards scoring the game-winner in the second minute of added time. Miles, who played for UMKC from 2001-2003, trained with the Wizards throughout the 2008 Major League Soccer campaign. He served as a guest player in the MLS Reserve division, appearing in two matches for the Wizards. He tallied a goal in the league, scoring a gametying goal in Kansas City’s 2-2 draw against New England on April 10, 2008. Former ‘Roo Bryan Perez (2006-09) has played in the PDL and was invited to the Chilean Soccer League for a trial. Numerous ‘Roos have played professionally in the MISL, with several currently playing for the MissouriComets right here in Kansas City.
