Season Preview

After winning their second Summit League title and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the second time in school history, the Kansas City men’s golf team is primed for a big season in their first year in the Western Athletic Conference. Head Coach J.W.VanDenBorn, the reigning Summit League Coach of the Year, returns four regulars from last season’s lineup and five total student-athletes, while welcoming in a quartet of newcomers to this year’s squad.

SENIORS Leading the charge for the ‘Roos will be a trio of seniors in Jack Fiscus, Nathan Hughes and Cole Chelle. Fiscus enters his fourth season in the Blue & Gold out of Tulsa, Okla., and was named Second Team AllSummit League last season after posting a 75.40 stroke average with one top-20 finish. In his career, Fiscus holds a 75.53 average, good for 10th best in school history. Hughes heads into year three with the ‘Roos after transferring to Oklahoma, holding a career average of 74.63, good for sixth best in school history. Last season, the Bartlesville, Okla., native garnered First Team All-Summit League honors, finishing with a 73.89 average, while earning All-Summit League Tournament honors after finishing third in the event. The ‘Roos third senior, Cole Chelle, returns for his fourth season at UMKC, after being named Second Team All-Summit League a season ago with a 75.18 average. In his career, the Edmonton, Canada, native holds a 75.18 average, eighth best in school history.

SOPHOMORES Sophomores Antoine Rozner and Cameron Wiltse, meanwhile, each return for their sophomore season in Kansas City with high expectations. Last season, Rozner was named First Team All-Summit League with his 73.47 average good for third best in school history, while placing second at the Summit League Championship, earning him a spot on the Summit League Championship All-Tournament Team and Newcomer of the Championship. In his career, he holds a 73.53 stroke average, the second best in school history. For Wiltse, the Chanute, Kan., native posted a 77.00 stroke average over six rounds last season, while holding a 78.78 average over nine rounds this fall. In his career, he holds a 78.07 average for the ‘Roos.

NEWCOMERS Joining the Kangaroos lineup this season, is a junior and three freshmen in Mitch Tucker, Nicholas Scrymgeour, Matthew DePalma and Thibault Vieilledent. Tucker comes to Kansas City out of Indian Hills Community College where he helped the squad to a National Championship as a freshman and was named Second Team AllAmerican last season. This fall, the Oskaloosa, Iowa, native recorded a 76.89 average over nine rounds. Cochrane, Canada, native Scrymgeour, meanwhile, posted an 80.19 stroke average this fall over 12 rounds after joining the ‘Roos. As a prep, Scrymgeour was the 2013 Alberta Junior Champion, finishing

at -10.

The second ‘Roo freshman, DePalma, registered an average of 82.00 in the fall over three rounds for the Blue & Gold, after earning First Team All-League honors at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, Calif. The newest ‘Roo, Thibault Vieilledent, joined UMKC at the beginning of the year out of Cannes, France. During his prep career,Vieilledent advanced to the semifinal of French Championship and finished sixth at the French Under-20 Stroke Play Championship in 2013.

SCHEDULE Kansas City returns to competition for the spring season when they make trips to Phoenix, Ariz., for the ReBath Snowman Getaway on Feb. 24-25 hosted by Loyola (Md.) at the Palm Valley Golf Club and Bandon, Ore., for the Bandon Dunes Championship hosted by Gonzaga on Mar. 9-11 at Pacific Dunes. After returning to the Palm Valley Golf Club for the Desert Shootout hosted by Kansas State on Mar. 20-22, the squad will close out the regular season with a pair of tournaments including the Memphis Intercollegiate on Mar. 31-Apr. 1 in Cordova, Tenn., at the Colonial Country Club and the Bancorp South Intercollegiate on Apr. 14-15 at the Reunion Country Club in Madison, Miss. On May 2-4, the ‘Roos will look to claim their second straight conference title when they head to Las Vegas, Nev., for their first appearance in the WAC Championship at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club.

BLUE HILLS COUNTRY CLUB Since 1912, Blue Hills Country Club continues to be the finest championship golf course Kansas City area. With the completion of a green renovation in the spring of 2005, Blue Hills now has A-4 bent grass putting surface that is second to none. The Robert Dunning 7,250-yard layout has hosted many state and USGA events along with several future U.S. Open and local and sectional qualifiers. Blue Hills also hosted the 2006 Men’s Missouri Amateur Championship.

Everyone in the golfing community knows Blue Hills for its relationship with Tom Watson and the Children’s Mercy Hospital Golf Classic, which ended a 25year run in 2004. In 2002, Watson hosted four of the games greatest players – Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino. Blue Hills is the only facility in the world where these five golfing giants have played together in the same group. Along with the championship 18-hole course, Blue Hills practice facilities include a driving range, a 7,000 square foot putting and chipping green, a pitching and bunker facility with a tee box 60 yards from the green and a private secluded teaching tee.

CREEKMOOR GOLF COURSE Creekmoor Golf Course is located south of Kansas City in the Raymore, Mo. The 18-hole layout features 7,400 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course features zoysia fairways and 65 sand bunkers. Designed by Thomas E. Clark, ASGCA, the Creekmoor Golf Course opened in 2007.

GOLF CLUB OF KANSAS The Golf Club of Kansas, which is located in Lenexa, Kan., opened in October 2007 and dramatic playing characteristics designed by acclaimed South Carolina Golf Course architect Tom Jackson and Project Founder and PGA Professional Tom Kelly.

The course, which is quickly being recognized as one of the finest 18hole courses in the Midwest, runs through what was once a 50-acre open pit quarry with 60-foot sheer rock walls. The rest of the 7,019-yard, par 71 layout stretches across 130 rolling acres next to the Kansas Sports Center and the Lenexa City Center. It features wide zoysia fairways, A1/A4 bent grass greens and a fescue-bluegrass combination in the rough. The Golf Club of Kansas was named the “#6 Best New Private Course in America” by Golfweek Magazine and “Kansas City’s Must Play Course” in Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine. It also received recognition for having the “Best Greens in the Midwest”. In addition, The Golf Club of Kansas hosted the Championship Round of the Kansas City Amateur and a KCGA Stateline Tour event in its first season.

LOCH LLOYD COUNTRY CLUB Loch Lloyd Country Club, which is located in the Village of Loch Lloyd, south of Kansas City is an 18-hole layout featuring 6,664 yards from the longest tees for a par of 70. The country club is opening a new Tom Watson designed nine-hole layout in July 2010, which will bring the total to 27 holes. Loch Lloyd was designed by Donald Sechrest, and the “Loch Lloyd 18” opened in 1990. The course was also the host to a PGA Senior Tour event in Kansas City for nine years in the 1990’s.

MEADOWBROOK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club, which is located in Prairie Village, Kan., is recognized as one of the best conditioned, most challenging golf courses in the Metro. Along with numerous Kansas City Golf Association and Kansas Golf Association events, Meadowbrook has hosted numerous events for the United State Golf Association such as the 2004 U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier, 2007 U. S. Amateur Qualifer and the 2008 U. S. Senior Amateur Qualifier. In the summer of 2009, Meadowbook hosted the 2009 U.S. Amateur Qualifier. The course has also hosted competitive junior golf on a national scale. Several American Junior Golf Association qualifiers and the 2006 Kansas City/Lockton AJGA Championship have been held at the venue.

MILBURN GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB The Milburn Golf & Country Club began as a dream that two men, Charles Babb and Max Phel, had shared in the fall of 1916. The original course featured a nine-hole layout with a small stone station used as the pro shop, clubhouse and snack bar. Soon after opening day the Board brought in William Boyce Langford, the noted golf architect of Chicago, to get his ideas on a full 18-hole course. In 1926, the Milburn’s members decided they wanted a true “championship golf course” and hired the firm, Smith and Harrison. They installed 18 new bent grass greens, new tee boxes, and 85 sand traps. Harry Robb, Sr., the club’s first professional, worked hard during his time at Milburn to make Kansas City and especially Milburn a regular stop on the PGA Tour, and in 1949, the Kansas City Open became a reality. In addition to the Kansas City Open, Milburn has hosted many other high profile tournaments, such as the Missouri Men’s Senior Tournament, Missouri State Amateur, Kansas State Amateur, The Tom Watson Challenge, and the course is one of the most often used venues for local U.S. Open qualifying, and is on the alternate year schedule for the final sectional U.S. Open Qualifier.

NICKLAUS GOLF CLUB AT LIONSGATE The Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Designed Golf Course that opened for play in 2001. The course is consistently ranked among the top courses in the Kansas City area as well as the entire state of Kansas. The Club has played host to the Champions Tour and is currently the host to the Nationwide Tour’s Midwest Classic in August. The great Jack Nicklaus’ last competitive round in the U.S. was played at the Nicklaus GC during the Senior Tour’s Bayer Advantage Classic in June of 2005.

SWOPE MEMORIAL GOLF COURSE Designed in 1934 by legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast, Swope Memorial Golf Course features rolling fairways, beautiful mature trees and small undulating greens. Once the home of the PGA Tour’s Kansas City Open during the 1940’s, Swope Memorial is the only public course in the Kansas City area to have hosted a PGA Tour event. The venue also served as the host course to the 2005 USGA Women’s Public Links Championships. Swope Memorial has been challenged by some golfing legends, as Ben Hogan and Sam Snead have played on this historic layout.

SHOAL CREEK GOLF COURSE Shoal Creek Golf Course, which opened in the fall of 2001, has quickly become the number one public course in the Kansas City area. This 6,950 yard par 71 golf property was sculpted by golf course architect Steve Wolfard, and offers a truly unique golfing experience for players of varying skill levels. Every year since 2006, it has been ranked #2 on Golfweek Magazine’s “Best Courses You Can Play in Missouri” list and been bestowed a “4 Stars” ranking by Golf Digest. Shoal Creek has hosted the Kansas City Amateur in 2006-2008 and 20102012. It has also hosted US. Amateur Qualifying in 2006 and will again do so in 2012. This extraordinary design features breathtaking elevation changes and expansive landing areas that meander through some of the most picturesque terrain in the Northland.

‘Roos Play Courses All Over the Nation...

The Kangaroos have routinely played a national schedule year-in-and-year-out during Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn’s tenure in Kansas City. UMKC doesn’t shy away from playing top flight programs, as the squad faces the likes of Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-10 schools on a regular basis. UMKC generally heads out west for one or two tournaments each spring, and the squad has played in 22 different states and in Guadalajara, Mexico, during Coach VanDenBorn’s 10-year run as the head coach of the ‘Roos.

J.W. VanDenBorn Director of Golf/Head Coach • UMKC, 2002 Former UMKC men’s golf student-athlete J.W.VanDenBorn was named the Director of Golf at his alma mater in June 2007. In this capacity, he oversees both the men’s and women’s golf programs for the Kangaroos. Overall,VanDenBorn has been the head coach for the men’s program for the past 10 seasons. In five of the past six seasons (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013), VanDenBorn guided the ‘Roos to at least a second place showing at The Summit League Championship with his 2011 squad winning the first tournament title in school history and the 2013 squad winning the second. He has led the ‘Roos to top-four finishes in the league championship tournament eight times. During the 2012-13 season,VanDenBorn was named Summit League Coach fo the Year after guiding the ‘Roos to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. Under his guidance, Korbin Kuehn, Nathan Hughes and Antoine Rozner were named to the First Team All-Summit League and Cole Chelle and Jack Fiscus were named to the Second Team All-Summit League, while Kuehn was named Summit League Golfer of the Year and Golfer of the Tournament after claiming his second individual Summit League title and Antoine Rozner was named Newcomer fo the Championship. Academically, Hughes was named to the Summit League Academic All-League Team, while six individuals were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence and seven were named to the 2012-13 Summit League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, including three as Distinguished Scholars. In the 2010-11 season, he led UMKC to its first ever NCAA Regional team appearance, and earned Summit League Coach of the Year honors after leading the ‘Roos to the Summit League title. He coached two second-team All-Summit League picks in Korbin Kuehn and Viktor Mikaelsson as well. The ‘Roos won two tournaments during the season, and placed third or better in seven tournaments. During the 2009-10 season,VanDenBorn coached three student-athletes to individual tournament titles, which were the most individual victories since the 2000-01 season. Senior Brett Iliff won the ReBath Snowman Getaway for his first career victory, Alex Hogben was crowned champion at the Hawkeye-TaylorMade/adidas Invitational in April, where he fired a final round 64, which tied the school record, and Korbin Kuehn claimed the medalist honor at the 2010 Summit League Men’s Golf Championship on the first hole of a sudden victory playoff. Following the win, Kuehn was named The Summit League Championship MVP and Co-Newcomer of the Championship, as well as being named to the all-Tournament team. Kuehn also advanced to participate in the NCAA Regional Championship in Atlanta, becoming just the second ‘Roo golfer to compete in the NCAA Championship. Kuehn was the second UMKC student-athlete to win the individual league tournament title under VanDenBorn’s tutelage. Stephen Clark was the first student-athlete to win the Mid-Con Championship in 2006, as he earned medalist honors with a two-under par 214. Subsequently, Clark also was the first UMKC men’s golfer to earn Mid-Con Player of the Year honor. During his tenure in Kansas City,VanDenBorn has coached a student-athlete to first team all-league honors in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the program. In five of his seven seasons, he had multiple student-athletes recognized, which included two first team and one second team honoree in 2010. During the 2005 campaign, VanDenBorn guided Brian Donnelly to Mid-Con Tri-Newcomer of the Year honors. VanDenBorn has also coached the team to the top single round performances in school history. His squad posted single round records of 280 in a pair of rounds as the 2004 SEMO/Harris Invitational, where they finished with a 54-hole tournament record of 848. During that same event, he led Alan Johnson to a school record 54hole total of 203 and the top single round performance (64) in school history. Off the course and on the recruiting trail,VanDenBorn has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success as well. Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the

top-25 in the country according to GolfStat. VanDenBorn’s recruiting efforts have produced some of the top players in UMKC men’s golf history, as Alex Hogben, Stephen Clark, Michael Schnegelberger and Brett Iliff all closed out their careers among the top-six in career scoring averages. In the classroom,VanDenBorn has had 26 players named to the Academic all-League team and 18 to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. He also coached Michael Schnegelberger to Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors in both 2008 and 2009. Prior to becoming the head coach,VanDenBorn spent two seasons as a player and another campaign as an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under former coach Bill Ross. He was officially introduced as the head coach for the program on July 1, 2003. As a student-athlete,VanDenBorn was a two-year letterwinner for the Kangaroos. As a senior co-captain in 2001-02,VanDenBorn recorded a 75.4 stroke average in 25.5 rounds and was twice named Mid-Continent Conference Golfer of the Week. He captured individual medalist honors by winning the Southeast Missouri State Invitational, where he matched the then school record with a five-under par 66 in the opening round of the event. As a junior in 2000-01,VanDenBorn quickly established himself as one of UMKC’s top players. He led the Kangaroos in four tournaments and was named Mid-Con Golfer of the Week (11-1-01) after finishing sixth with a two-over par score of 218 at the SMS Pepsi Challenge. Before transferring to UMKC,VanDenBorn was the NJCAA Region III champion in 2000, while playing for Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). He captured the Jayhawk Conference individual championship and was an all-conference pick in 2000, which led to him being named the KCKCC Male Athlete of the Year. Academically,VanDenBorn earned Verizon Academic All-District honors and Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar accolades. He also was the recipient of UMKC’s Stan Durwood Award, which is given annually to the UMKC student-athlete with the highest grade point average with a minimum of 100 hours passed. As a prep,VanDenBorn was a four-year football, golf and basketball letterwinner at Henryetta (Okla.) High School. VanDenBorn earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UMKC in 2002. He then received his master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and management from UMKC in May 2009. He and his wife, Stephanie, were married in June 2008, and they reside in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Four ‘Roos Break Par In Final Round To Propel Kansas City To 4th At ReBath Snowman Getaway The Kansas City men’s golf team climbed to a fourth place finish at the ReBath Snowman Getaway after four ‘Roos broke par in Tuesday’s final round at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. In the event, the Kangaroos carded a three round score of 868 (297-287-284), tied for the eighth lowest 54-hole tournament score in school history. Junior Nathan Hughes led the ‘Roos, firing a final round 71 that included three birdies to finished tied for 10th at -1. Kansas City Finish Second At ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational The Kansas City men’s golf team closed out the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational in second place, three shots back of Sam Houston State, to record their second best finish of the season at the Southern Pines Golf Club in Calhoun, La. Junior Nathan Hughes led the ‘Roos in the event, finishing fourth at +5 with a pair of birdies in the final round, while freshman Antoine Rozner placed 12th at +11, also notching two final round birdies. Junior Jack Fiscus was the ‘Roos next lowest finisher, carding five birdies in the final round to finish at +16, while Korbin Kuehn tied for the ‘Roos lowest round of the day, shooting a final round 74 to tie for 41st. Junior Cole Chelle, meanwhile, rounded out the Kansas City lineup in a tie for 45th.

Hughes Named To Summit League Academic All-League Team Kansas City golfer Nathan Hughes was named to The Summit League Academic All-League Team after a vote by the nine institution’s faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors, the league announced today. Hughes earned all-league first team and all-tournament team honors this season. He placed third at the league tournament and recorded a 73.82 stroke average this season with a 3.72 GPA as a business administration major.

Five ‘Roo Linksters Earn All-League Honors The Summit League announced its 2012-13 all-league golf teams at the awards banquet Sunday, prior to the start of The Summit League Golf Championships in Keller, Texas. The awards were based on Golfstat rankings heading into the championship tournaments. Kansas City landed three golfers on the men’s first team in Nathan Hughes, Korbin Kuehn and Antoine Rozner. Kuehn earns his second career first team all-league honor after recording a 73.80 stroke average heading into the championships. Hughes garners his first career award after registering three top-five finishes this season. He has a 73.87 stroke average entering tournament play. Rozner carries a 73.37 stroke average and collected a low round of 69 this season at the Memphis Intercollegiate and the Bill Ross Intercollegiate. Cole Chelle (75.87) and Jack Fiscus (75.40), meanwhile, were both named to the Second Team. ‘Roos Head Back To The NCAA Championship With Summit League Title The Kansas City men’s golf team earned its second trip to the NCAA Championship in school history with its second Summit League title in the last three years on Wednesday afternoon at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club in Keller, Texas. Senior Korbin Kuehn claimed his second Summit League title by one shot over teammate Antoine Rozner, while junior Nathan Hughes finished third. All three ‘Roos were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Kuehn winning Tournament MVP and Rozner claiming the Newcomer of the Year title. Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn, meanwhile, was named The Summit League Coach of the Year. Kuehn entered the day in second, trailing Rozner until the final hole of the event when his sixth and final birdie of the day gave him a round at -3 and propelled him to the individual title at even par. Rozner, meanwhile, finished the round and the tournament at +1, carding all three of his birdies on the back nine, while Hughes had his best round of the tournament carding a -1 over a final round that featured four birdies and an eagle on the par five 15th. Cole Chelle followed up his second round 73 with a final round 74 that included three birdies on the front nine and his second straight birdie on the par five 18th, sending the junior to a tie for 20th at +16. Kangaroos Finish 12th At NCAA Fayetteville Regional The Kansas City men’s golf team climbed one spot on the final day of play at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional to finish 12th at the Blessings Golf Course behind strong play from junior Nathan Hughes. On the day, the Bartlesville, Okla., native fired a final round 69, the lowest round by any golfer on the course, to tie for 21st at +8 after eight birdies in round three. Freshman Antoine Rozner wrapped up his successful first season in the Blue & Gold in a tie for 32nd at +11 with a final round 79 that included three birdies. In his final event as a ‘Roo, senior Korbin Kuehn finished tied for 49th at +17 after a final round 79 that was highlighted by a birdie on the par five 16th. Cole Chelle, meanwhile, carded the ‘Roos second lowest round of the day with a 76 that featured a birdie on the 16th, placing the junior in 61st position. Rounding out the Kansas City lineup in his final collegiate event was senior Viktor Mikaelsson who placed 73rd with a pair of final round birdies.

Six ‘Roo Linksters Named To Commissioner’s List Of Academic Excellence, Four To Academic Honor Roll Men’s linksters Cole Chelle, Jack Fiscus, Nathan Hughes, Korbin Kuehn, Viktor Mikaelsson and Park Ulrich were each named to the Summit League’s Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, with the team winning the league’s Team Award. Following the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year, The Summit League announced its Academic Distinguished Scholars and Academic Honor Roll for the winter and spring seasons. Men’s golf had three student-athletes named to the Distinguished Scholar list and four total named to the Honor Roll, including Mikaelsson (DS), Antoine Rozner, Ulrich (DS) and Cameron Wiltse (DS). Kuehn Named Summit League Golfer Of The Year Kansas City’s Korbin Kuehn was named The Summit League’s Golfers of the Year, in a vote conducted by the league’s head coaches. This is Kuehn’s first career honor and just the second time for a Kangaroo men’s golfer to capture the award. Kuehn becomes just the second Kansas City golfer to capture the honor (Stephen Clark, 2006) after leading the Kangaroos to their second championship title in program history. The senior earned Championship MVP honors for the second time in his career (2010) following his first-place performance at the league championships and was named first team all-league for the second-straight year. ‘Roos Finish Bill Ross Intercollegiate In 6th The Kansas City men’s golf team closed out the 2013 Bill Ross Intercollegiate in sixth place, firing their best round of the tournament with a 294 at the Millburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan., on the final day of play. Cole Chelle led the ‘Roos in the third round and in the tournament, carding a final round 72 to finish in 12th at +4. In his final round, the senior played the final 11 holes at -3 with three birdies and no bogies. Fellow senior Jack Fiscus carded his third straight round of 74, finishing at +6 in a tie for 17th with two final round birdies, while sophomore Antoine Rozner also shot a 74 with a pair of birdies, placing in a tie for 27th at +8. Cameron Wiltse shot the ‘Roos third 74 on the final day of play, as the sophomore eagled two of the course’s four par fives and added a birdie to finish in a tie for 59th at +16. Senior Nathan Hughes rounded out the Kansas City lineup in a tie for 48th at +12 after a final round 75 that included three birdies. Competing as individuals for the ‘Roos were freshman Nicholas Scrymgeour and Matthew DePalma, with the duo finishing 79th and 80th, respectively.

Robert RUSSELL

UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee Inaugural Class - 2008 Former UMKC men’s golfer Robert Russell wrote the UMKC record books during his two year stint in Kansas City. Russell was the first student-athlete to participate in an NCAA Championship event, and he was the first men’s golfer to earn all-America honors in school history. Russell came to UMKC following a two-year stint at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College, where he was the 1995 Junior College National Champion. After moving across the city to UMKC, Russell won a total of seven tournaments, including three straight in the spring of 1997. He was a two-time first team all-Mid-Con selection after tallying a pair of runner-up finishes at the Mid-Con Championship and in 1996, he was selected as the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year. As a junior, Russell posted a 73.68 scoring average over 30 rounds. He tied for 24th at the NCAA Central Regional Championship, narrowly missing the cut to advance to the national tournament. The following season, Russell advanced to the 1997 NCAA Championship as an individual after tying for 11th at the NCAA Regionals. By making an appearance in the 100th NCAA Championship, Russell became the first Kangaroo to play in a Championship event. He posted a 72.40 scoring average over 35 rounds to finish his career with a 72.95 stroke average in 65 rounds. Russell ended his career by receiving Golf Coaches of Association of America honorable mention all-America honors in 1997. By receiving the nod, he became the first golfer and the second UMKC student-athlete to be recognized as an honorable mention allAmerica selection in the NCAA Division I era, joining volleyball player Catalina Suarez (1989). Only one other UMKC golfer has been awarded all-America honors, as Dan Key earned NAIA all-America accolades in 1986. The Joplin, Mo., native followed his collegiate career with a successful professional career on the Buy.com and Hooters Tours. In 1999, Russell advanced to one of the biggest stages in professional golf, when he qualified and played at the U.S. Open Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. In December 2008, Russell was recognized for his outstanding athletic achievement when he was inducted into the inaugural class of the UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame.

Bill Ross

In his 35 year career, tournament namesake Bill Ross was an instrumental figure in the history of UMKC Athletics. After beginning the men’s basketball program as its first head coach in the 1969-70 season, he served as the first head coach for the women’s basketball program in its inaugural season in 1980-81. He has since been inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and was a member of the 2009 class of inductees into the UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame. The Bill Ross Intercollegiate was started in his honor in 2005. "It really was a great time... one that would be hard to top," said Ross. "You know I'm not a long-winded guy when it comes to these things, but if I started thanking people individually... it would go on for quite a while."

LEO E. MORTON Chancellor

eo E. Morton was named Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City on December 15, 2008. Prior to assuming the Chancellorship, Leo was employed by Aquila, Inc, joining the firm in January 1994 as vice president, performance management. He was named senior vice president in 1996 with responsibility for re-engineering, corporate procurement and environmental services. Morton assumed additional duties for the management of human resources in 1997 and information technology in 1998. He was named senior vice president and chief administrative officer in 2000 as he also assumed responsibility for additional corporate services. Director of Athletics Carla Wilson

CARLA WILSON Director of Athletics

Carla Wilson is serving as the Interim Director of Athletics, as of July 1, 2013. She was promoted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration in September 2007. Prior to her appointment, Wilson served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations for nine years. As the Interim Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator, Wilson is the highest ranking female involved with the management of UMKC’s Intercollegiate Athletics program, and represents UMKC in dealings with the WAC and the NCAA. She also partakes in program-wide administrative responsibilities, including decision making at the institutional, conference and national levels. She collaboratively addresses departmental goals, supports women’s interests and supports and helps manage diversity, gender equity and Title IX matters. Wilson, who is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, is a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. The 18-month program was developed with the specific goal of enhancing the employment and leadership opportunities for racial/ethnic minorities and women at the senior management level of intercollegiate athletics administration. She is also a 2009 NACWAA HERS East graduate, and was named NACWAA Division I Administrator of the Year in 2012. Wilson has also been active on NCAA committees during her time at UMKC. In 2010, Wilson began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Committee, and from 2004-07, she served on the Division I NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee. Both committees are responsible for selecting the teams that compete for the opportunity to play for a national championship. Since 1999, Wilson has also served on the NCAA Region V Post Graduate Scholarship Committee. A 24-year career Kangaroo, prior to Wilson’s 15 years in athletics, she served UMKC as a budget specialist in the University’s administrative affairs office for four years, where she was responsible for assisting in the preparation of the University’s $159 million budget. From 1988-93, she also served in the accounting department as a senior accountant. Wilson graduated from UMKC in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She and her husband Kevin, have four children, Shae, Tristan, Kevin Jr., and Kylan, and they reside in Olathe, Kan.

Senior Administrative Staff Ursula Gurney

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Strategic Initiatives

Gurney joined the UMKC Athletics staff in August 2008, following a highly successful six-year tenure at The Ohio State University, where she worked in the Student-Athlete Support Services Office. At UMKC, Gurney is currently overseeing the athletics academic unit with a combined GPA of 3.09, a graduation success rate of 83 percent and a comprehensive academic progress rate of 966, which is the highest in The Summit League. For the Buckeyes, she assisted in the academic support of 949 student-athletes in 36 varsity sports, specializing in preparing football student-athletes to meet educational requirements and traveling with the team to the 2008 BCS National Championship game to monitor academic development. Alongside her work in the athletics department at OSU, she has also served as an undergraduate instructor in the history department and assisted in the organization of several international conferences for the Mershon Center for International Security Studies from 2005-08. Gurney, who swam competitively on the national level in Canada, earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2000. She also earned her master’s degree in history at SFU in 2002 and is a candidate for a doctorate in history from Ohio State. She and her husband reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Josh Snyder

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Development

Josh Snyder was hired on as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance on May 31, 2011. Snyder comes to UMKC from Boise State University, where he served as the Executive Director for NCAA Compliance. Prior to his appointment at Boise State, Snyder spent seven years at Iowa State in several different leadership roles. While at Boise State, Snyder served as a senior staff member for the Compliance Department. He was responsible for all compliance operations and efforts. He began his appointment with the Cyclones in 2003 as the Director of Compliance and moved up the ranks to be named an Assistant Athletics Director in two years. Snyder received a bachelor’s of science in exercise and sports sciences from Iowa State University in 1995. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Law in 2001, ranking in the top-15 in his class. Snyder was admitted to practice before all Nebraska state and federal courts. He has served on multiple NAAC Committee’s and presented at several NCAA Regional Rules Seminars. While at Creighton, Snyder received two American Jurisprudence Awards for finishing first in his class in a course, was on the Editorial Staff and was a published author.

Ron Aulet

Associate Athletics Director for Operations/Facilities

Aulet, who began his duties at UMKC in May 2007, oversees game operations for each of UMKC’s 16 intercollegiate sports and serves as point person for construction of new athletic facilities for the Kangaroos. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for the strength and conditioning departments, and is the sports supervisor for men’s soccer and volleyball. Prior to his tenure at UMKC, he served as equipment manager at the University of Kansas, where he was responsible for maintenance and inventory of all equipment for KU’s Olympic sports programs. He was also the departmental contact for Coca-Cola and served as the chair of the KUAC Staff Advisory Committee during the 2003-04 school year. Aulet received his bachelor of arts degree in management from Hiram College in 1995, earning a master of arts degree with a sports administration concentration from Kent State University in 1999. He and his wife Kerrianne have two daughters - Danielle and Samantha - and reside in Lawrence, Kan.

Jessica Dickson

Assistant Athletics Director for External Relations

Dickson joined UMKC in August 2006 following a successful tenure at Time Warner Cable/Metro Sports, and was named to her current position in July 2007. She oversees all of the marketing, promotions and ticketing efforts for UMKC, also serving as the sport supervisor for women’s soccer. While at TWC, she was responsible for educating Time Warner sales departments nationwide on network programming as well as creating promotional material and advertising packages for TWC’s client networks. Additionally, she coordinated the highly successful www. beepbeep.com, an automotive marketplace website in Kansas City that averaged 30 participating dealerships under her oversight. Dickson has also served in a volunteer capacity for the Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC since 2005. Dickson earned a bachelor of science degree in public relations with a minor in photography from Central Missouri State University in May 2002 and was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s soccer team. She and her husband Ryan reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field will serve as the official home of the Kangaroos and will provide student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in The Summit League and the Midwest. The $9 million addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus. The gift from the Durwood Foundation and its trustees to construct this stadium is another in their long history of supporting a variety of UMKC initiatives. Durwood will provide seating for 850 fans and a separate addition will host locker rooms, offices and concession areas. Stanley H. Durwood was one of the University’s and the athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with UMKC began when NCAA Division I participation was a pipe dream. Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholarship for UMKC student-athletes.

Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility The Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility continues UMKC’s commitment to the total care of each student-athlete. Under the guidance of Head Athletics Trainer Ted Ferris, the UMKC Sports Medicine staff prioritizes prevention, treatment and rehabilitiation in working with Kangaroo student-athletes. Built in 1999, the Swyden Athletics Training Facility honors the memory of former Kansas City councilman and longtime UMKC Athletics supporter Victor F. Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos from NAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo High School, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by UMKC upon an individual. For the 2009-10 season, the UMKC Athletics Department is teaming up with the UMKC School of Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, under the direction of Dr. Russell D. White. The Fellowship Program will provide health care for the student-athletes by staffing the training room 3-4 days per week and will also be available to see student-athletes in need of urgent care. Members of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program will also be present at all major home sporting events and tournaments, in addition to providing assistance with any specific athletic events. Swinney Recreation Center The home of UMKC Athletics, Swinney Recreation Center is also one of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City. Created through $14.5 million addition to the old Swinney Gymnasium, the center includes five basketball courts, four racquet ball courts, a 25-meter indoor/ outdoor pool and three exercise rooms - two weight rooms and a cardio room.

The competition court serves as the home venue for UMKC volleyball in the fall, UMKC women’s basketball and select men’s basketball contests during the winter. It is also the main practice venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. Kangaroo student-athletes enjoy some of the finest locker room facilities in The Summit League courtesy of a major renovation undertaken prior to the 200708 school year. Along with providing each studentathlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features a player’s lounge that includes leather couches and a big screen television. In addition, the lounge is equipped with a computer workstation with a high-speed internet connection.

Old Swinney Original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center received a face lift in the summer of 2010. The renovation transforms the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for ‘Roo student-athletes. The $500,000 renovation plan calls for new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building will also be altered, which will allow for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.

Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at UMKC’s Swinney Recreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004. Led by Director of Strength, Conditioning and Sports Enhancement Trumain Carroll, the Brookfield Center is designed to help enhance UMKC student-athletes’ levels of performance while significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of performing structured strength and power training throughout the entire year will give studentathletes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development. The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines and the latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchased the latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the video analysis needed to improve their techniques.

UMKC Athletic Facilities & Departments Municipal Auditorium

Municipal Auditorium, a building that many fans believe is the best arena in which to watch basketball, is the home of UMKC menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball. The venue, which has a rich and storied basketball tradition, is now in its eighth decade in Kansas City. Municipal, which was opened in 1936, has hosted nearly every type of event - from U.S. presidential campaigns to NCAA Final Four Championships. In fact, the auditorium has hosted a total of nine NCAA Championships, which are the most of any other building in the country. The facility is also the home to the NAIA National Tournament and the MIAA Tournament. A facility upgrade included $3.5 million in renovations, encompassing new arena lighting, new seating and enhanced locker rooms for players and officials. In 2006, the facility continued its upgrades, as it replaced the playing court. Municipal Auditorium is located in the heart of downtown Kansas City and steps from the Kansas City Power & Light District. Municipal Auditorium comfortably seats 10,700 people, including 7,300 permanent upholstered seats. The Arena is one of four self-contained venues in the Municipal Auditorium, and has its own lighted marquee, box office, show office, coat check, restrooms and concessions. It is accessible from the south side of 13th Street, where visitors enter through the splendid Grand Foyer. The arena is also connected by covered walkways to the Convention Center, Conference Center, and the Auditorium Plaza Garage.

Missouri 3&2 Complex UMKC reached an agreement with the city in the fall of 2011 to play its softball games at the Missouri 3&2 Complex. Since its first season there in the spring of 2012, UMKC has added a new scoreboard and re-furbished the fences around the game field. In its first season, UMKC softball hosted the Missouri Coaches Versus Cancer Classic, and the Summit League Championships.

The UMKC men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and compete at the Plaza Tennis Center, which is located just minutes away from the UMKC campus. The Plaza Tennis Center sits next to the Country Club Plaza, the Midwest’s oldest outdoor shopping area featuring a number of unique shops, restaurants, boutiques and Spanish architecture. The facility includes 14 outdoor lighted courts, a pro shop and locker rooms. The exhibition court, adjacent to the clubhouse, features permanent and bleacher seating for about 300 spectators. The center has hosted many events, including three Big 12 and the final Big Eight Championships, NCAA Division II Nationals, the Missouri Valley’s National Qualifier Sweet 16, a USTA professional men’s satellite tournament, USA Tournament Tennis sanctioned play, USTA leagues and instructional programs. The facilty has received local, regional and national awards since its grand opening in 1996. In 1998, the United States Tennis Association named the center a USTA National Outstanding Public Tennis Facility. In 2005, it was named PTR Public Facility of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Registry. In 2007, the Plaza Tennis Center was recognized as one of the top 50 Tennis Welcome Centers in the country. UMKC Hosted the Summit League Men’s and Women’s Championships there in 2012.

Student-Athlete Support Services Office It is the mission of the Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) to provide a variety of educational support to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools to meet their academic, professional and personal goals. SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes, but is not limited to the following services: academic counseling, academic mentoring, degree and NCAA eligibility monitoring, assessment, tutoring, computer access, academic and individual skill development, individualized study plans, a comprehensive Summer Bridge Program, academic workshops, knowledge of on-campus resources and Life Skill development. SASSO offers a comprehensive tutoring program available to all student-athletes. SASSO employs undergraduate and graduate student tutors to provide assistance in a variety of academic areas. The mission of the tutoring program is to provide subjectspecific support and assistance to any student-athlete with equal access for all sports. All SASSO tutoring takes place in study hall, SRC 251. Most tutoring sessions are a one-on-one meeting with a tutor and student-athlete; however, group tutoring sessions are also available. The SASSO tutoring program serves as an additional support for course material but does not supplement for class attendance. The primary focus of tutoring is the teaching of skills and strategies that support independent learning. SASSO Tutoring services are a privilege and may be revoked if abused.

FACTS After completing its 51st year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 29 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 22 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games since 2006. In 2013-14, the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008. Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, 1978. The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai‘i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women’s programs from Air Force and Hawai‘i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, 1999. Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the 2000-01 season. In 2005, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. Boise State withdrew prior to the 2011-12 season. In 2012, the WAC added Denver, Seattle U, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. The current membership began on July 1, 2013 when the WAC added Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, Kansas City, UTPA and Utah Valley to join Idaho, New Mexico State and Seattle U. The new institutions replace withdrawing members, Denver, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, Utah State, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The Evolution of the Kangaroo

hen choosing a mascot, the discussion usually starts with three main categories - predatory animals, historical or regional figures, or humans that represent power and strength - and ends with a collection of the usual suspects. Thanks to Walt Disney, The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Zoo, UMKC has a very unique mascot, but how exactly does the Kangaroo fit? As it turns out, quite well. In 1936, the issue of a mascot was first brought up by the editors of The University - the campus newspaper for Kansas City University. Although there were no organized intercollegiate athletics teams at the time, the newspaper staff felt that KCU’s debate team - and more importantly the school itself - deserved a unique identity. During that same year, the Kansas City Zoo purchased a pair of baby Kangaroos, and The Kansas City Star lit the fire with an article titled “Kangaroo May Go To KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have A Symbol.” Others on campus were not as enthusiastic. The editors of The Crataegus - the University’s yearbook - thought that a Kangaroo was not an appropriate symbol for KCU. In a matter of a few years, The Kangaroo thrived while The Crataegus floundered, with the latter eventually folding. The Kangaroo became the University’s yearbook and the Kangaroo became the official mascot of Kansas City University. Kasey has undergone several changes over the years, with the most recent metamorphosis led by former UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall. With the help of local advertising agency Bernstein-Rein, UMKC developed a set of new athletics marks in the spring of 2008. After a community vote, the new Kangaroo logo was unveiled in May. With its aggressive snarl, the new Kangaroo capitalizes on UMKC’s mission to be an outstanding urban university while keeping mindful of the traditions established in 1937.

Student housing at UMKC is about more than just offering you a place to eat and sleep - it’s about your total educational experience. THE NEW STUDENT UNION

UMKC opened a new 109,000-square-foot Student Union in August 2010. The new Union offers a bird’s eye view of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, a new 329-seat theater, a two-story bookstore, new restaurants (Chick-fil-A Express, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, SubConnection and Jazzman’s Café & Bakery) and 10,000 square-feet of space dedicated to student organizations. Located near UMKC’s residential halls at 51st and Cherry Streets, the $38.3 million Student Union features a green roof terrace and wide floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Plaza, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and UMKC’s Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field.

Cowtown Shmowtown Although Kansas City’s reputation outside the Midwest may be that of an agricultural cowtown, its residents know the truth. UMKC is in the middle of it all, with history, culture and entertainment options on all sides and within just a short walk or drive. Here’s just a few of the options that students at UMKC have at their disposal. The Legends at Village West boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space and is home to more than 100 shops and restaurants. This northern shopping mecca is also located by the Kansas Speedway, Sporting Park and Community America Ballpark. The Kansas Speedway hosts major league racing events like NASCAR’s Sprint and Nationwide series. Sporting Park is home to the MLS’s Sporting KC, while Community America Ballpark is home to the Kansas City T-Bones.

Located within a short walk from the Volker Campus, The NelsonAtkins Museum of Art includes works of art from some of the great masters. The lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art resembles a badminton court with 18-ft.-tall sculptures, titled “Shuttlecocks.”

The Country Club Plaza offers 14 blocks of shopping amid beautiful Spanish architecture, fountains and statues. More than 80 miles of lights outline every building, dome and tower on the Country Club Plaza each holiday season. The Plaza is within a short walking distance from the Volker Campus. Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains with more than 200 fountains on the Plaza and in downtown KC.

Kansas City The $850 million Power & Light District is the largest new development project in the Midwest. Just steps from the Convention Center and a short drive from the Volker Campus, the Power & Light District features eight blocks of dining, nightlife and entertainment venues. Located next to the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center opened in downtown Kansas City in October 2007. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art, 18,500-seat arena offering marquee concerts and sporting events. Located in the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience celebrates college basketball by placing visitors in electrifying, game-like situations. Home to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well, UMKC had the honor of opening the CBE and held its first practice of the 2007-08 season.

Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Tournament games and more Final Fours than any other venue in the country. The UMKC men’s basketball team will play the majority of its games at this historical venue during the 2013’14 season.

Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, seats more than 79,000 on game day. The Kansas City Royals play in Kauffman Stadium, which just wrapped up a $250 million renovation. Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot-wide water spectacular. The water spectacular is the largest privately funded fountain in the world. Both teams play at the Truman Sports Complex.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum chronicles the history and heroes of the Negro Leagues from their founding after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The first professional Negro Leagues were founded in Kansas City in 1920, just two blocks from the museum.
