TRIO Natural Disaster Emergency vessel Individual Project | 9 months
01
Design and prototype a solution to the effects of life threatening natural disasters. - Self appointed brief.
02
TRIO
Design a product that can aid those in danger from natural disasters, provide clean water, communications and heat. Applying all I have learnt from previous projects for my major project, where I have set my own brief. Conducting my own research and going through each stage of the design process within the 9 month period.
THE ISSUE? There is no uniďŹ ed product for this kind of situation, it’s all supplied as a kit.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The construction of these products are not adequate for the dangerous environment
Some products are meant for other adventurous environments and therefore not suitable for life threatening situations.
PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT The life cycle of these products are not properly thought about as governments and NGOs send aid to foreign countries

TRIO HOW IT WORKS
FEATURES CARABINER CLIP
3 Different mechanisms in 1 product
1
Water purification. Taking dirty river water and using an active carbon filter combined with Reverse osmosis filters to filter out chemicals and viruses.
CARRY HANDLE
LCD DISPLAY
2 3
Emergency communications using BGA sim card circuitry to communicate with local responders or call for an SOS. Also with the ability to talk to family members.
TWIST OPEN BASE
Heat chamber which uses a stock of paraffin wax fuel in a chamber encouraged to generate heat.

Injection Moulded Ground Coffee Scoop Group Project | 12 Weeks
02
Design and Manufacture a polymer widget that promotes a brand
06
This design has no association with the company BIALETTI
Designing a coffee scoop widget with a SHOT WEIGHT of 25g and MANUFACTURING the mould tools required
CUSTOM CNC TOOLING
Good planning and time management resulting this project going smoothly without any major problems, some components took time to setup and manufacture however I was able to contribute my end and manage my workload with other projects going on at the same time.
POLYMER FLOW ANALYSIS

MANUFACTURING
1
Take stock material and rough cutting down to size
2
Using the produced engineering drawings to make cuts and follow the steps to produce each insert
3
Check using measuring equipment before surface grinding to ďŹ nish
MANUAL MACHINING
INJECTION MOULD OUTPUT
4
Test injecting polymer (LDPE) and making macro adjustments.
08
Coffee scoop that PROMOTES BIALETTI which helps MEASURE a cupful of coffee grounds
09
Automated Coffee Aeropress machine Group Project | 8 Weeks
03
Manufacture a solution to automate the coffee making process of an AeroPress
10
This design has no association with the company Aerobie
Integrating electronics and mechanics to DESIGN and MANUFACTURE a twin directional plunger with water pumping capabilities
CAD ASSEMBLY
My design from the initial 3 concepts was taken forward after evaluating the feasibility and ease of manufacturing of the range of designs. Since this was the proposed design, I was leader of the project and delegated work to my team and managed the overall progress along with manufacturing and designing of the electronics and some of the metal manufacturing.
MECHANISM CONCEPTS
COMPONENT FLOWCHART
11
What I learnt was that having a good CAD model to plan manufacturing helped a lot but it doesn’t point out all the feasibility issues or manufacturing constraints. However as a team we looked at alternative solutions to a problem within a high pressured time deadline.
DEVE LOPMENT PROCESS
1
Standard parts such as bars, mounting hardware and were bought in and measure up and implemented on the CAD model
2
Other components were hand machined and manufactured in-house using the engineering drawings
3
Electronics were developed adding each component until the hardware and software was working as expected.
4
Issues and challenges that came up were implemented and features changed while sticking with the brief
5
Electronics and mechanical systems were incorporated together into one machine with a more permanent structure
12
AUTOMATE the AeroPress process adding FEATURES to the coffee brewing experience
HOT WATER PUMP
COFFEE INTAKE
COFFEE CONTROLS
LCD DISPLAY
Power Switch

Cyclists Performance IOT Device Individual Project | 10 Weeks
Design and Model an Internet of Things device
14
04
Aiding cyclists by MONITORING their leg POWER distribution using cameras to help their posture while riding Moving away from functional design and creating something which follows a trendy design form was quite difficult. I have learnt a lot in finding contemporary design form to follow rather than finding forms to suit the function look of the product.
FORM CONCEPT SKETCHES
HOW IT WORKS The device use IR cameras and waves to generate distance and sonar data. The device can detect the position of the users legs giving the posture of the cyclists. It checks whether the user is riding in balance and at the correct seat height
PROTOTYPE FOAM MODELLING Generate some quick user feedback for standalone operations and form comfort
15
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
1
Create some engineering drawings based on the chosen blue foam model and rough out some parts using pro-lab
2
Hand and machine shape each component to the right form and proportions. Applying filler primer to achieve a smooth finish
USER INTERACTIONS AND FEEDBACK
Some user feedback during use of product within a cycling environment
AESTHETIC PROTOTYPE MODEL
3
Final surface finish and incorporate hardware components and labels.
16
A CONNECTED device which TRACKS and reports cyclists balance using a camera, providing feedback on the app
