othing starts your day off better than getting a good night's sleep and sleeping with the right pillow can help.

"Pillows can not only impact the quality of our sleep, but also how healthfully we rest and recharge," says sleep expert Michael Breus, PhD, a clinical psychologist. But the wrong pillow may worsen headaches, neck pain, shoulder and arm numbness, discomfort, sneezing, and wheezing, notes orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sujit Narayan. "A bad pillow won't be the cause of any of these problems, but using the incorrect pillow can certainly exacerbate many of the underlying problems linked to these symptoms and it certainly can keep you from getting a good night's rest," says Hecht, the co-chief of spine surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. And if your pillow is past its prime, it may contain skin cells,

mold, mildew, fungus, and dust mites, which make up more than half of an older pillow's weight, Breus notes. Experts say the general rule is to buy a pillow every 12 to 18 months. After two years, it's definitely got to go. Causes of Fatigue and Sleepiness and How to Fight Them - Consider Your Sleeping Style Before you buy a new pillow, think about your sleep position. "The goal of using a pillow is to help keep your head in what is called a 'neutral alignment,' meaning your head is sitting squarely on your shoulders without bending back too far or reaching too far forward," says Kammi Bernard, PT, a physical therapist at the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas. 路 If you sleep on your back: "Back sleepers need thinner pillows, so their head is not thrown too far forward," Bernard says. Also look for a pillow with extra loft in the bottom third

shape of your body as you move throughout the night. Memory foam pillows come in various shapes, including a popular contoured S-shape, which is meant to support the neck. Memory foam material is known to make sleepers hot, and can sometimes emit an unpleasant chemical odor. Latex: This is the firmest type of pillow, and it resists mold and dust mites. Latex pillows may also help with back and neck alignment, as they're often contoured for neck support. of the pillow to cradle your neck. 路 If you sleep on your side: Side sleepers need a firmer pillow to fill in the distance between the ear and outside shoulder. 路 If you're a stomach sleeper: Look for a very thin, almost flat pillow. You may not even need a pillow for your head, but consider tucking one under your stomach to avoid lower back pain. Pillow Stuffing Options There is no shortage of fillings you can find stuffed in a pillow these days. The most common ones are down-feather combinations, foam, or polyester fiberfill. Memory foam and latex pillows have become quite popular in recent years, particularly among people looking for additional neck support. What's right for you? That may depend on how you're feeling on a given day. Most people have more than one type of pillow to choose from. A pillow wardrobe, in other words "Pillows serve multiple purposes". For instance, you may want a pillow to support your neck if your neck is bothering you one day. But once your neck feels fine again, that same supportive pillow may not be the most comfortable for you. Here's what to look for in each type of pillow filling: Foam: Go by the density. The higher the density, the less breakdown, and the more support you will have without getting too soft. Memory foam: These are popular because they reduce pressure points by continuously molding and adjusting to the

Wool/cotton: Wool and cotton pillows are hypoallergenic and resist mold and dust mites. Both also tend to be quite firm. So if you love a squishy pillow, these fillers aren't for you. Down/feather: Many sleep experts recommend these as one of the best pillows for a good night's rest. One of the great things about down pillows is that you can move the stuffing around so that you have the most support where you need it. Plus, it's soft, yet firm enough to give you the support you need. A combination of 50% feather and 50% down works well because the feathers act like springs and are quite supportive. Do you avoid down or feathers because of asthma or allergies? Several studies have shown they pose no greater risk than a synthetic pillow -- and may, in fact, be better for you. But if you're allergic and prefer not to take a chance, synthetic down pillows are an option. If a good-quality down pillow is out of your price range, other options include polyester fibers, such as Primloft, that mimic down. But doctor warns that although alternatives to down pillows are cheaper than some pure down pillows, they also won't last as long. 路 Consider more than cost. Just because a pillow costs more does not automatically make it a better pillow or the right pillow for you. What matters is how the pillow feels to you. Most of the time, you can find something that works without breaking the bank. Try it out in the store If you're in a store and there's the option to lie down, do that. If that's not an option, you stand next to a wall in the position in which you like to sleep, put the pillow

15

against the wall as though the wall were a vertical mattress, lean your head against it, and ask someone to tell you if your neck is tilting one way or another. Your neck should be in line with your spine. Specialty Pillows: What You Should Know Many pillows are designed to address specific needs, including hot flashes, headaches, and neck pain. But they can be pricey, and there is little clinical research available about how well they work. Here's a quick look at some of the options: · Cervical pillows: Available in various materials and shapes, these pillows add extra cushioning in the lower portion of the pillow to support the neck. Doctors say that occasionally they can be of some help, but a research review, conducted by the Canadian Institute for the Relief of Pain and Disability, showed insufficient evidence to recommend for or against the use of these pillows. · Water pillows: Favored by some physical therapists and many chiropractors, these pillows use water to create your own customized level of density and support.

16

· Cool pillows: Touted as an antidote to hot flashes and night sweats, these pillows include a filling of tiny "beads" that absorb and whisk away head heat, leaving the part of the pillow that touches your face cool. You lay your head on it and it's like you always have the cool side of the pillow. · Oxygen-promoting pillows: This pillow technology is based on studies of sock fabric that helped promote circulation in diabetes patients. These pillows use the same technology to increase oxygen content in tiny blood vessels by up to 29%. What can that do? Doctors aren't sure, but "some people have even reported a reduction in pain after using these pillows,". · Anti-snore pillows: There is limited research showing that any particular pillow design affects snoring. But individual patient reports, and a study shows that relief is possible in some people. · Positional pillows: These pillows are designed for back, stomach, or side sleepers. Experts say some can be very helpful. If you choose one, look for support, comfort, and the right size for your body.

Diabetes a reversible disorder Every day, in India, more than thousand new cases of diabetes are diagnosed. Type II diabetes, the most extensive form of diabetes worldwide, often shows hardly any or even no symptoms! After consuming, food is broken down into glucose, a sugar which is carried by the blood to cells throughout the body. Utilizing a hormone known as insulin, prepared in the pancreas, cells convert glucose into energy. Since cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not usage insulin appropriately in the body of a person with type II diabetes, they have difficulties converting food into energy. Finally, the pancreas cannot make sufficient insulin for the body's demands. The amount of glucose in the body rises and the cells are starved of energy. This starvation of the cells, combined with the high bloodglucose level can harm nerves and blood vessels. This initiates to complexities such as kidney disorder, nerve troubles, blindness, and heart diseases. There are different factors that can help to attribute to diabetes cases – way of living, surroundings, heredity – and those who are at risk should be screened routinely to avert diabetes.

18

About the author Dr. Ramesh Chhabra M.B.B.S., M.D. Those that are already diagnosed with diabetes must seek to maintain their glucose level under control. But how do you distinguish if you have type II diabetes? After all, it has one or two symptoms, often no signs in some patients. However, if you observe a prolonged thirst or hunger, a change in weight, or unclear vision, getting tested for type II diabetes is needed, as only your doctor will be able to advise you to find the healing steps necessary to being able to cope with your life with diabetes. Simple modifications such as eating right, supervising your weight, and maintaining your blood-sugar level under control may be enough. Nevertheless, your physician may recommend diabetes-regulating medications to help you in controlling your type II diabetes.

Diabetes is an acute disease with extreme issues if it isn't treated properly. However, if you obey your physician's advice and look after both your lifestyle and blood sugar levels, you can help to stop the more serious consequences from happening. While speaking about diabetes, you may be scared of the thought that you may have it. Or maybe, you could have it in later part of your life. You want to understand if you are at chance to develop diabetes, and anxiously you're looking forward to finding if you have any diabetes symptom. Diabetes affects the way the body copes with carbohydrates, fats and proteins. If overlooked, diabetes can have acute complications. The diabetic persons have a high blood-sugar level The blood-sugar level is controlled by insulin – a hormone produced by the pancreas, which relies on your consuming habits. Diabetes is a serious disorder. However, the surprising fact is that diabetes is reversible. Diabetes is the numberone factor of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This illness is a state where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood-glucose levels, consequent in too much glucose (a sugar) in the blood. Diabetes is a chronic disease that attacks million of Indians. Diabetes Symptoms If you have two or more of these pre-diabetes signs, you must seriously think over getting yourself checked out: 1. If you notice you are excessively thirsty, not just because of excessive exercise or hot weather. 2. You feel to continuously have a dry mouth – even if you have drunk something. 3. You notice that you need to urinate frequently. 4. You have sudden weight loss or gain (even though you possibly are constantly hungry and consuming well. Of course, you may be eating the inappropriate things which would very likely make your pre-diabetes symptom worse). 5. You feel lazy. You always sense as if you've got no energy; you are dull and exhausted all the time. 6. Occasionally your vision is blurred – be prudent, untreated eye troubles provoked through diabetes can lead to blindness. You must have periodic eye checks, specifically as you get older because your eyes can be the early-warning indication

Low Blood Sugar Symptoms

for lots of diseases – not only diabetes. 7. You have wounds or sores or swellings (especially on your feet) that are slow to cure. 8. If you experience immoderate itchiness or soreness in the genital region or yeast infections (which can be misdiagnosed as thrush) it may be a signal of excessive sugar in your urine. There are varied kinds of diabetes; pre-diabetes, type-I, typeII, gestational and maturity onset. And, subjected upon your age, the way of living and family history you may be more liable to developing diabetes. For instance you may be more likely to developing diabetes if

19

any of these points applies to you: · When your family background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino. · You have a parent or sibling who has diabetes. · You are over 45 and are obese you could be at risk of diabetes Type-II. · Your high blood pressure is not under control. · Your cholesterol level is more than normal. TYPES OF DIABETES There are two different forms of diabetes. · Type I Diabetes (juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes): The cause for Type I diabetes is because of pancreas inability to produce insulin. · Type II Diabetes (non insulin-dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes): This diabetes is an effect of body tissues turned out to be resistant to insulin. It is mainly because of hereditary. Type II diabetes is usually more common than Type I Diabetes. Type II diabetes is a lifetime disorder marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Conditions related with type II diabetes includes hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Type II diabetes may account for around 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Up to two-thirds of individuals with type II diabetes has no characteristics. Overweight is the single most high-level risk factor for type II diabetes. An assessed 20% of all cases of new onset type II diabetes is in people between the ages of 9-19. The further you understand about the type II diabetes, the more you'll be able to take the correct steps to take control of your problem. If ignored diabetes can lead to different problems such as harm to the kidneys, heart disease, nerve damage, hypoglycemia (drastic lowering in glucose levels). Diabetes is an acute disease and there is no cure of it. Though it can be brought under control by appropriate diabetes diet. Diabetes Foot Care 1. Check your feet every day – particularly if you have low responsiveness or no sense in your feet. Wound's cuts and grazes could go unobserved, and you could develop

20

complications leading to amputations.

2. Don't walk barefoot, even indoors. It's easy to step on something or stub your toes and hurt yourself. Cover your feet with socks/stockings and shoes/slippers. 3. Be cautious if you have corns or calluses. Consult with your physician or podiatrist the finest way to care for them. 4. Clean your feet every day in warm, and not hot water. And don't immerse your feet (even if you've been standing whole day) since it might dry your skin and form cracks or sores. 5. Take further attention to dry your feet wholly particularly between your toes. These are typical moisture traps – leaving them moist or damp may produce all sorts of troubles. 6. Exercise your legs and feet routinely. Even when seated you can twist your ankles; shake your toes or move your legs up and down. These will keep your blood flow and helps to reduce the risk of foot inconveniences. 7. Get your feet checked, at least once in few months, for sensitivity and signals of any difficulties. You can generally arrange this when you have your yearly check up for your AC1 level's blood pressure and cholesterol. Take continuous care of your feet. Get assistance from a relative, specialist, physician diabetic nurse or podiatrist if you are not able to bow when trimming nails or checking for wounds. Taking these simple steps will help you diminish the risk of miserable problems. If you have diabetes knowledge about how to handle your condition is a key to your well being. If you don't take care of your feet, you run the risk of developing wounds or infections that could, in the worst-case situation lead to amputations.

to protect your child ORAL CARE Tooth decay - although largely preventable with good care - is common in children.

Around 51% of children starting school and around a half of children aged 12 have visible tooth decay.

About the Author : Dr. Nikhil Girdhar Micro Dental Surgeon & Implantologist Chhabra Hospital, Panipat.

Neglecting baby teeth is not the only error parents can make when it comes to their child's early oral health, so here is a seven-step plan.

toothbrush, which are very soft. Brushing should be done twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste.

1. Start oral care early

Also ask your dentist's advice about when to start using mouthwash.

Your child should see a dentist regularly, starting as early as possible once their baby teeth start to appear. Starting preventive care at an early stage saves money later in life, and possibly pain for the child. 2. Teach the brush and floss habit Dental visits are just part of the plan, of course. Tooth brushing is also crucial from the start. A lot of people think they don't have to brush baby teeth. If your baby has even one tooth, it's time to start tooth brushing. If there's just one tooth, you can use gauze. Even before your baby has teeth, you can gently brush the gums, using water on a soft baby toothbrush, or clean them with a soft flannel. Once there are additional teeth, parents should buy an infant

So, how long will it be until your little ones can be responsible for brushing their own teeth? During dental visits, ask your dentist if your child's teeth need fluoride protection or a dental sealant. 3. Avoid "baby bottle decay" For years, we doctors, health visitors and dentists have been warning parents not to put an infant or older child to bed, or down for a nap, with a bottle of juice, formula or milk. The sugary liquids in the bottle cling to baby's teeth, providing food for bacteria that live in the mouth. The bacteria produce acids that can trigger tooth decay. Left unchecked, dental disease can adversely affect a child's growth and learning, and can even affect speech.

21

Long-term use can be hazardous to dental health. Sucking too strongly on a dummy, for instance, can affect how the top and bottom teeth line up (the "bite") and can affect the shape of the mouth. 6. Beware of mouth-unfriendly medicines Many medications that children take are flavoured and sugary. If they stick on the teeth, the risk of tooth decay goes up. Children on medications for chronic conditions such as asthma and heart problems often have a higher decay rate. Antibiotics and some asthma medications can cause an overgrowth of Candida (yeast or monilia), which can lead to a fungal infection called oral thrush. Suspect thrush if you see creamy, curd-like patches on the tongue or inside the mouth. Dentists may advise more regular tooth brushing. 7. Stand firm on oral hygiene

Experts say that if you must give your child a bottle to take to bed, make sure that it contains only water. 4. Control the sippy cup habit Bottles taken to bed are not the only drinks problem. The other one is fruit juice given during the day as a substitute for water and milk. Often, that juice is in a sippy cup, which is meant as a transition cup when a child is being weaned from a bottle and learning to use a normal cup. Parents mistakenly think that fruit juice is a healthy day-long choice for drinking, but that is not the case. Prolonged use of a sippy cup can cause decay on the back of the front teeth if the beverages are sugary. Sugary drinks and foods should be limited to mealtimes. 5. Ditch the dummy by the age of two or three Dummies (or soothers) used in the first year of life may actually help prevent sudden infant death syndrome, though the NHS says the evidence is not strong for that claim.

Children may resist tooth brushing time. Experts suggest the following tips to coax reluctant brushers and flossers to get the job done - or if they are too young, to allow their parents to help them do it. Plan to help your children for longer than you may think necessary. Children don't have the fine motor skills to brush their own teeth until about six years old. Flossing skills do not become adequate until later, probably around the age of 10. Arrange the brushing and flossing (and rinsing, if advised) for times when your child is not overly tired. You may get more cooperation from a child who isn't fatigued. Get your child involved in a way that is age-appropriate. For instance, you might let a child who is aged five or older pick their own toothpaste at the shop, from options you approve. You could buy two or three different kinds of toothpaste and let the child choose which one to use each time. You may offer him a choice of toothbrushes, including child-friendly ones that are brightly coloured or decorated. Work out what motivates your child. A younger child may gladly brush for a sticker, for instance, or gold stars on a chart.

ERoTIC ZONES

I

t is unfortunate, but in our genitally oriented society, many people concentrate only on the act of intercourse, and ignore other ways of giving pleasure. They believe that there are only three erogenous zones; the ones are covered up by your swimming trunks. Hopefully you are one of them. But, fess up, could not you like a little more ESP for experimentation? Here we give you more hot spots to explore and a road map to forgotten erotic zones. Plus the Tender Loving Care (TLC) needed to keep them happy' go` healthy.

Tender loving care (TLC) keep your skin clean with two daily baths and a soap that suits your body type. Body lotion helps its stay moist. Lavish special care to under arms, around nipple and the genital area, which can smell rank due to bacteria acting on the apocrine sweat glands. Use a deo, if Body Odour is a serious problem. HOLDING HANDS This is one of the most romantic things that a couple can do, whether they are teeny boppers or oldy goldies-in a darkened theatre, on a sun bathed beach, when crossing a road.

SKIN GAMES Surprise, surprise! Your skin is your largest sensory organ, richly supplied with nerve endings. Sometimes when you say that you want more sex, it really means that you want more opportunities to touch and be touched. Like snuggling, stroking, slow dancing, caressing, massage, body to body contact. Touching-anywhere, anytime-keeps you wanting one another-not necessarily as a prelude to sex but for its own delicious components.

TLC Since hands have no oil glands, they can become dry and rough, which makes holding them no fun. To keep your paws smooth and supple use mild liquid soaps, this is not drying, and a cream or even olive or sunflower oil after washing and cooking. Scrub away dead cells once a week with a loofah or exfoliator for a minute or two. After you wash your hands at night, dry partially and apply cream. Cover with plastic gloves and keep on overnight.

· Protect against the sun with glares that offer hundred % UV protects. · See your eye doctor once a year. THE NOSE KNOWS

DIRTY GLANCING The eyes are your window to sex. Viewing the sexual organ is titillating. So is watching the changes they undergo as sexual activity proceeds. Seeing the nude body in motion during intercourse adds to the intensity of the experience. A man's sexual excitement is significantly peaked simply by the sight of a disrobed woman. Making love with the lights on or in front of a large mirror can increase the erotica. There is more. Couples who use eye contact and glances that speak to one another, have a closure than close relationship. TLC · Blink regularly which lubricates and cleanses. The frequency should be 5-6 minutes and be done without frowning or using facial or forehead muscles-specially when sitting at a computer.

Although we scent and deodorize our bodies until the base material has all but vanished, the body's special musk, called pheromones contributes to sexual attraction and excitement or happy familiarity - which is why partners cuddle a favorite Tshirt when its owner is out of town. Perfumes can trigger memories and entice a prospective lover. TLC Never pick at your nose, which may produce infection and even bleeding. Nasal hair which serve as useful barrier against dust and allergens, don't grow back, once plucked

· Change your focus often when concentrating on close work, look up and focus on objects across the room every 3-5 minutes, or gently cover and open your eyes into your palms. · When driving keep your eyes moving by shifting your focus from distant cars to the speedometer to the rear view window and so on. · Be aware of peripheral vision. Know that there is a disc besides the computer, a statue behind your chair, the curve of the embankment to your right when you are driving at night. · Nourish your eyes with the gentle rays of early morning sun. Face the sun with closed eyes for five seconds. Then cover them with your palms for five more seconds. Repeat both steps ten times.

out.. Apply a little cream and gently wipe with a tissue. Avoid blowing forcefully which can damage the ear and trigger sinusitis.

· Do gentle eye exercises at least once a day. Shift your eye ball from one end to the other, then up and down. Repeat six times.

Secret instructions, body talk, explicit words cannot be shouted out loud. Whispering which you are making love intensifies arousal. So does heavy breathing, moans and groans which can get louder in the throes or orgasm.

· Bathe with cool water four times a day. Never crush or rub.

SOUND EFFECTS

Whispering connotes a special intimate conversation like pet names, complements, words of affection. TLC Never poke anything into your ears, not even so called ear buds. · Use ear plugs when you swim or while using a noisy appliance or when you are going someplace with loud music. · Give your ears regular breaks from loud sounds-aim for 10 minutes every hour. · Let your ears recover after two hours exposure to 100dB by resting them for 16 hours. · Don't stand or sit near speakers. · Use walkmans, iPods and such at reasonable decibel levels so that you can hear somebody who is talking to you. · Use a speaker phone. · Avoid listening to music while travelling alone, because you tend to increase the volume. ORAL GRATIFICATION The first serious pleasure that you received was via the sense of taste, though your mouth which is why the mouth is a very important focus of sensual sensation. Experienced lovers gain as much pleasure as they give by all over body tasting, biting, licking, and sucking. And of course kissing-soft, deep, using tongue and teeth to explore the inside of the mouth which symbolizes passion and penetration.

piece of gloss or tailoring thread. Remember to rinse vigorously after every meal/snack. If you can't carry a small mouthwash to use after that candlelight dinner, then you should steer clear of garlic and onions. Cinnamons oil on your toothbrush is a sensuous treat. Use a soft bristle brush and change every 3 months. · The lips are covered with mucous membranes which are thinner and more delicate than the rest of your skin. Since there are no other glands to keep them lubricates they can chap and darken and dry out. Licking and biting them yourself can worsen the dryness, so that the kisser gets a mouthful of loose rough skin. Protect your lips with a dab of petroleum jelly or a chap stick to keep them luscious. BOUNTIFUL BREAST Breasts are composed of a network of ducts, fatty tissue, blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue, and lymphatic vessels. They symbolize eroticism and sensuality. The erotic area is the areola (the pigmented ring around the nipple) and the nipple itself which are richly supplied with sensory nerve ending. That's why smaller breasts are more sexually responsive. Fondling, sucking or caressing can give pleasure regardless of size. Men's nipples are also sensitive to touch, licking, sucking.

Oral genital contact also uses the tongue and mouth. And for sheer romance, nothing beats feeding one another from the same plate, bite by luscious bite. TLC Keep your mouth sweet with meticulous oral care twice a day brush teeth, tongue and gums gently but thoroughly. At night, before turning in, clean the area between teeth with a

TLC Support by a well fitting bra, even at night when you are pregnant or have large breasts. Keep clean and dry to prevent fungal infection. Cream dry and flaky arela and nipples. Tweeze out the stray hairs that emerge, if they bother you. Understand your breasts and examine them just after your menstrual period or on the first of every month if you are menopausal.

state they are usually folded at mid line. The inside secretes a greasy substance. The inner lips (or labia mineral) are likely curvy petals and are rich in small blood vessels, without the fat cells. The clitoris looks like a small shiny button just under the point where the inner folds meet. It is unique, for its sole function is to focus on and collect sexual sensation and erotic pleasure and is highly sensitive to touch, pressure and temperature. TLC Wear cotton panties- synthetic stuff retains heat and moisture creating a favorable environment for bacteria to grow. Stay away from medicated douches and scented lubricant which can reduce the acidic content and cause irritation. After passing a stool, always wipe from a front to back so that bacteria from the anus won't enter the vagina. Wash the area twice daily with mild soap and water. Pat dry Always insist on a condom if you are not sure of your partner's faithfulness, to protect yourself for STD.

After a shower, put one arm down. With the palm of the other hand, apply gentle pressure methodically all over the breast to see whether you can feel any lumps, dimples or thickening. Then ease your fingers into the armpit and examine for enlarged nodes. Squeeze the nipples to check for discharge. Repeat on the other breast. Then lie down and examine them once more. Exercise, early pregnancy and breast feeding are protective. 5% of all breast cancers hit men, but since it is uncommon it may go undiscovered well into later stages. So men also need to examine their chests. DOWN UNDER Female sex organs are lush with nerve ending; touching them can create extremely pleasurable sensation. The mons veneris is the area over the public bone that consists of a cushion of fatty covered by skin and public hair. The outer lips (or labia majora) are folds of skin covering fat tissues and a thin layer of smooth muscle. In an unstimulated

Get to know your body's responses. Using KY jelly, insert one finger, and then two into your vagina. Tighten and relax your muscles around. So do Kegel's exercises, to strengthen the pelvic muscles around the anus, vagina, and urethra. Squeeze hard and then release 10 to 20 times daily, which you can do anywhere, sitting, standing, and laying down. To identify the muscles, insert a finger into vagina and squeeze. Guys-clench the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine. If sex is painful, apply an anesthetic ointment (Xylocaine) and wipe off. Then apply KY jelly which is water based. Petroleum jelly can dry the vagina and damage the condom. SOUTHWARDS HO The scrotum of skin hanging behind the limp penis contains two testicles. They lie in their funny position outside the body to remain cool, 5 degree less than the rest of your body, so as to keep the sperm alive and kicking. The muscles can also contract to pull them closer for warmth and comfort and relax to allow them to hang further to cool. The scrotal skin is super sensitive and responds best to light fingertip caresses, licking, gentle sucking, stroking the public hair.

The perineum is the hairless ridge between the back of the scrotum and the penis and is so sensitive that the slightest pressure can induce an erection or restore a flagging one.

FOR POTENTIAL PARENTS

TLC Check your testicles for lumps and swelling while you are in the shower, when your skin is softer and easier to find the testes within. Cradle the scrotum in the palm and feel the difference between the testes. Examine each in turn and compare with each other. Gently roll each between thumbs and fore finger. Usually one is larger and lies lower. They should both be oval and smooth. The epididymis, the tube along the top and back of each testis, should not feel bumpy. PROCEED WITH CAUTION The anus is the opening (or the end of the intestine) where wastes are passed from the body. It is formed mainly from the surface layers of the body including the skin and partly from the intestine A muscular ring called the sphincter keeps the anus closed until the person has a bowel movement. Using your tongue and mouth in the anus can give you a serious infection, because of the harmful germs lurking within. Painful lacerating fissures are common in those who have anal intercourse which can be dangerous, if your partner is HIV positive. It also loosens the sphincter so that you can unknowingly dribble faeces.

* Keep cell phones away from the trouser pockets, because the radiation can decrease the quality of the sperm. Use phones with abruption rate (SAR) of less than 1.6 watts per kg. * A laptop with Wi-Fi near your genital may decrease sperm * Keep weight within normal limits- not too fat, not too lean. Exercise daily together. * Stop smoking * If unavoidable, drink just one peg of alcohol a day. * Steer clear of saunas, hot tap baths, long bicycle riding, tight briefs and shorts which lower sperm count by overheating testicles. Wear loose fitting trousers. Sit on a mesh car seat. * Have at least two cold showers on hot days. If the work place is overheated, apply a cold/ice water soaked towel around the scrotum two, three times daily. * Use plain saliva for lubrication. * Check out with your doctor about toxic chemicals at your work place. * Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. * Learn to cope positively with stress. * Let your partner become your sounding board- Think togetherness.

LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT DIETING

- Dr. Jyoti Bajaj

If you want to lose weight, Dr. Jyoti Bajaj is here to suggest about without dieting, how you can become slim & trim. Time your meals Set a timer for 20 minutes and reinvent yourself as a slow eater. This is one of the top habits for slimming without a complicated diet plan. Savour each bite and make the meal last until the bell chimes. Paced meals offer great pleasure from smaller portions and trigger the body's fullness hormones. Wolfing your food down in a hurry blocks those signals and causes overeating. When soup's on, weight comes off Add a broth-based soup to your day and you'll fill up on fewer calories. Think minestrone, or Chinese won-ton. Soup's especially handy at the beginning of a meal because it slows your eating and curbs your appetite. Start with a low-salt broth or tinned soup, add fresh or frozen vegetables and simmer. Beware of creamy soups, which can be high in fat and calories. Sleep more, weigh less Sleeping an extra hour a night could help a person drop six kilos (14 pounds) in a year, according to a university researcher who ran the numbers for a 2,500 calorie per day intake. His scenario shows that when sleep replaces idle activities – and the usual mindless snacking – you can effortlessly cut calories by 6%. Results would vary for each person, but sleep may help in another way, too. There's evidence that getting too little sleep revs up your appetite, making you uncommonly hungry. Serve more, eat more veg Serve three vegetables with dinner tonight, instead of just one, and you'll eat more without really trying. Greater variety tricks people into eating more food – and eating more fruit and

32

vegetables is a great way to lose weight. The high fibre and water content fills you up with fewer calories. Cook them without added fat. Season with lemon juice and herbs rather than drowning their goodness in high-fat sauces or dressings. Go for whole grains Whole grains such as brown rice, barley, oats, buckwheat and whole wheat also belong in your stealthy weight loss plan. They help fill you up with fewer calories and may improve your cholesterol profile, too. Whole grains are now in many products including pizza crust, pasta and soft "white" wholewheat bread. See your skinny clothes Hang an old favorite dress, skirt or a hot pair of jeans where you'll see them every day. This keeps your eyes on the prize. Choose an item that's just a little too snug, so you reach this reward in a relatively short time. Then pull out last year's cocktail dress for your next small, attainable goal Skip the bacon Say "no" to those two rashers of bacon for breakfast or in your sandwich at lunch time. This simple move saves about 100 calories, which can add up to a 4.5 kilo (10 pound) weight loss over a year. Other sandwich fillings can replace the flavour with fewer calories. Think about tomato slices, peppers, roasted peppers, grainy mustard or a light spread of herb goat's cheese. Build a better pizza Choose vegetable toppings for pizza instead of meat and you'll shave 100 calories from your meal. Other skinny pizza tricks: use less cheese or use reduced-fat cheese and choose a thin crust made with just a touch of olive oil. Sip smart: Cut back on sugar Replace one fizzy sugary drink with water

or a zero-calorie drink and you'll avoid 10 teaspoons of sugar. Add lemon, mint or frozen strawberries for flavour and fun. The liquid sugar in fizzy drinks appears to bypass the body's normal fullness cues. One study compared an extra 450 calories per day from jelly beans vs. fizzy drinks. The sweet eaters unconsciously ate fewer calories overall, but not so the ones having fizzy drinks. They gained more than a kilo (2.5 pounds) in four weeks. Sip smart: Use a tall, thin glass Use a tall, thin glass instead of a short, wide tumbler to cut liquid calories - and your weight - without dieting. You'll drink 25-30% less juice, fizzy drinks, wine or any other beverage. How can this work? Experts say visual cues can trick us into consuming more or less. Tests found all kinds of people poured more into a short, wide glass - even experienced bar staff. Sip smart: Limit alcohol When an occasion includes alcohol, follow the first drink with a non-alcoholic, low-calorie beverage like sparkling water instead of moving on to another cocktail, beer or glass of wine. Alcohol has more calories per gram (seven) than carbohydrates (four) or protein (four). It can also loosen your resolve, leading you to mindlessly ingest crisps, nuts and other foods you'd normally limit. Sip smart: Go for green tea Drinking green tea may also be a good weight loss strategy. Some studies suggest that it can rev up the body's calorieburning engine temporarily, possibly through the action of phytochemicals called catechins. At the very least, you'll get a refreshing drink without loads of calories. Slip into a yoga state of mind Women who do yoga tend to weigh less than others, according to one study. What's the connection? The yoga regulars reported a more "mindful" approach to eating. For example, they tend to notice the large portions in restaurants but eat only enough to feel full. Researchers think the calm self-awareness developed through yoga may help people resist overeating. Eat at home Eat home-cooked meals at least five days a week to live like a

thin person. One survey found this was a top habit of "successful losers." Sound daunting? Cooking may be easier than you think. Shortcut foods can make for quick meals, such as lean minced beef for fajitas, washed lettuce, pre-cut vegetables, tinned beans, cooked chicken strips or grilled deli salmon. Catch the "eating pause" Most people have a natural "eating pause," when they drop the fork for a couple of minutes. Watch for this moment and don't take another bite. Clear your plate and enjoy the conversation. This is the quiet signal that you're full, but not stuffed. Most people miss it. Chew strong mint gum Chew sugar free gum with a strong flavour when you're at risk of a snack attack. Making dinner after work, at a party, watching TV or surfing the internet are a few dangerous scenarios for mindless snacking. Gum with a big flavour punch overpowers other foods so they don't taste as nice. Shrink your dishes Choose a 10" lunch plate instead of a 12" dinner plate to automatically eat less. Researchers found in test after test that people serve more and eat more food with larger dishes. Shrink your plate or bowl to cut out 100200 calories a day – and 4.5 - 9 kilos (1020 pounds) in a year. In the tests, no one felt hungry or even noticed when tricks of the eye shaved 200 calories off their daily intake. Get food portions right The top habit of slim people is to stick with modest food portions at every meal, five days a week or more. "Always slim"

33

people do it and successful slimmers do it, too, according to one survey. After measuring portions a few times, it can become automatic. Make it easier with small "snack" packs and by keeping serving dishes off the table at meal times.

Eat out your way Restaurant meals are notoriously fattening, so consider these special orders that keep portions under control: · Split a starter with a friend.

Try the 80-20 rule

· Order an appetiser as a meal.

We're conditioned to keep eating until we're stuffed, but in parts of Japan people eat until they're 80% full. They even have a name for this naturally slimming habit: hara hachi bu. We can adopt this healthy habit by dishing out 20% less food. Studies show most people don't miss it.

· Choose the children's portion. · Get half the meal in a doggie bag before it's brought to the table. Complement a smaller starter with extra salad for the right balance: half the plate filled with vegetables. Reach for the red sauce Choose tomato sauce for pasta instead of creamy sauce. The tomato-based sauces tend to have fewer calories and much less fat than cream-based sauces. Remember, portion size still counts. A serving of pasta is one cup or roughly the size of a tennis ball. Go meatless more often Eating vegetarian meals more often is a slimming habit, according to some experts. Vegetarians weigh up to 20% less than meat eaters. While there are several reasons for this, beans and pulses play an important role. Bean burgers, lentil soup and other tasty legume-based foods are simply packed with fibre. Many of us only get half of this important nutrient, which fills you up with fewer calories. Burn 100 calories more Lose 4.5 kilos (10 pounds) in a year without dieting by burning an extra 100 calories every day. Try one of these activities: · Walk one mile, about 20 minutes. · Dig up weeds or plant flowers for 20 minutes. · Mow the lawn for 20 minutes. · Clean house for 30 minutes. · Jog for 10 minutes. Celebrate When you've kicked the sugary fizzy drink habit or simply made it through the day without overeating, pat yourself on the back. You've moved closer to a slimming lifestyle that helps people lose weight without unrealistic or complicated diet plans. Phone a friend, get a pedicure, buy new clothes - or on occasion, indulge in a small slice of cheesecake.

Expert’s Opinion in DENTISTRY An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure

What is Bad Breath ? “The mouth is the mirror disease! It is said that 120 multisystem diseases are often manifested in the oral cavity. In simple terms it is bad breath. No one appreciate it or points it out. Everyone despises it. Bad breath is one of the common causes of social embarrassment, broken relationships apart from being the ominous sign of poor health. What are its causes? A) Diet is the commonest: garlic, onions, a significantly nonvegetarian diet devoid of fruits and vegetables often result in bad breath. B) Habits like alcohol intake, smoking and smokeless tobacco intake result in a malodour that raises quite a stink from the person's mouth/makes quite a stench. C) Neglect: Poor brushing, flossing or mouthwashing habits. D) Dental causes: Decayed and broken Teeth, gum disease, very old and broken fillings, open root canals, tartar and calculus are also some other common factors. E) Less common are; sinusitis with a postnasal drip, uncontrolled diabetes (the ketone breath), kidney failure, gastrointestinal disturbances, lung diseases (bronchitis and related disorders), cancer of the mouth, pharynx, throat area and the gastrointestinal tract may also cause halitosis. F) Dry mouth or Xerostomia, where salivary flow reduces due to reasons like ingestion of multiple medications, salivary gland disease, diabetes etc. are also implicated. How can I treat and/or prevent it? A) Enjoying a sensible diet with lots of fruits and vegetables B) Drinking 2-4 litres of water every day C) Total abstinence from tobacco both the smoking and smokeless variety Maintaining a disciplined oral care regimen that includes: Twice a day brushing with a useful preferably fluoridated (unless otherwise contraindicated) or gumcare toothpaste. Regular scaling and polishing (to eliminate tartar, calculus) and restoring the mouth by visiting your dentist are mandatory.

Dr. Nikhil Girdhar Microdentist & Implantologist

If indicated periodontal surgery may need to be performed. Flossing and mouth washing at your dentist's recommendation is important too. Maintaining good general health with appropriate blood tests, X-rays and therapy as suggested by a competent medical professional is equally important. Maintain a high level of oral and dental hygiene. In addition to brushing, it is important to clean between the teeth using dental floss. Use a tongue cleaner and clean right to the back of the tongue. Use a mouthwash recommended by your dentist. The best time to use it is just before sleeping. Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding too much coffee Clean your mouth after eating milk products, fish and meat When does the first tooth develop? The age at which the first tooth appears differs greatly from child to child. It commonly appears in the middle of the lower jaw at around six months of age. Children may not develop any teeth until they are more than a year old. The set of twenty primary teeth is usually complete by the age of two and a half years. The first permanent teeth appear at around six years of age. These are the incisors in the middle of the lower jaw and the first permanent molar teeth. The molars come up behind the primary teeth; they do not replace them. How should I take care of my child's teeth? You should start taking care even before the teeth appear. You can get in the habit of wiping your baby's gums with a soft damp cloth after your baby has fed. When teeth appear, start using a soft children's toothbrush twice a day. In preschoolage children, use a tiny dab of fluoride toothpaste. Do not cover the brush with toothpaste, a pea-sized amount is just right. Young children tend to swallow most of the toothpaste, and swallowing too much fluoride toothpaste can cause permanent spots on their teeth. Why is fluoride used in toothpastes? Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is very effective in protecting teeth against decay. When teeth first start to

decay, minerals in saliva help mend the teeth, but the mending process requires fluoride to work properly. Most people do not get enough fluoride from the water supply, therefore fluoride is useful when added to toothpaste. Most packs will tell you how many parts per million (ppm) of fluoride the toothpaste contains - 500ppm is a low level and 10001500ppm is high.

but it is difficult to tell if this is really due to teething. · It can be helpful to give the child something hard to chew on · Start brushing as soon as teeth appear · Brush thoroughly twice a day, just before bed is important · Help your child brush until they are able to do it well by themselves, usually around the age of seven

Low fluoride toothpaste should be used for children under seven because it is important to avoid too much fluoride while permanent teeth are still forming as it can mark the teeth. Does diet make much difference to the child's teeth? Diet does make a difference to your child's teeth. Avoiding sweets, sticky foods and between-meal snacks is advised. Saliva in the mouth can clean teeth, but it needs time to work. A child who snacks constantly during the day never gives saliva the chance to clean the teeth. Milk or other liquids taken from baby bottles can create special problems particularly when it stays in contact with the teeth for a long time. Never put a baby to bed with a bottle. Don't let your child walk around during the day with a bottle. Teach your child to use a drinking cup around the first birthday. Does teething make a baby sick? When teeth come through the gums, a child may feel a little soreness and act a little fussy. Some children enjoy chewing on a firm object or having their gums rubbed with a finger. Teething does not appear to cause fever, rash, diarrhoea or other illnesses. If your baby has any of these symptoms, talk it over with your doctor. When should I start taking the child to the dentist? The first visit to the paediatric dentist should be around the child's first birthday. This gives the dentist a chance to look for early problems with the teeth. It is a good time to review important advice about diet, bottles, tooth brushing and fluoride use. It also helps your child become comfortable and get started with regular dental check-ups. What to do when your child is teething? Some teeth come through with no trouble at all. In other cases, the gum may be sore and red where the tooth is pushing its way out. A child may gnaw and chew a lot or just be fretful,

· Use fluoride toothpaste and encourage your child to spit after brushing; do not rinse afterwards as this reduces the benefits of the fluoride in the toothpaste · Use a tiny smear of toothpaste for babies and a pea-sized amount for children · Young children will swallow the toothpaste; use a children's toothpaste with reduced fluoride until they are able to spit well · Visit a dentist regularly to get your child used to the surgery · Reduce the amount of sugary food or drinks you give your child and limit these to mealtimes · Only give water or plain milk in a bottle. Juices should be diluted and given in a cup · Limit fizzy drinks and natural fruit juices as they contain sugar and are acidic. This causes decay and erosion, which will dissolve the teeth · Teach your children how to brush their teeth and tell them the importance of keeping their teeth clean.

EXPERT’S Opinion

Dr. Ravinder Pal Singh Gandhi M.B.B.S., M.S. - Eye Surgeon there is nothing to worry and prescribed vitamin A capsules. Can I have your opinion on this?

Q. Since the past 3 years, I have been getting flashes in my right eye that last for 5 seconds or so, but come back when I am tired. Sometimes I get slight headache too. I consulted an eye doctor who told me not to worry. She said that there is no sign of any detachment but I freak out when I get these flashes. I am only 36 years old female and under medication for over 6 years for hyperthyroidism which is pretty much under control. I am quite scared. A. Your symptom of flashes is not quite uncommon in your age group. The vitreous jelly which fills the eye is firmly attached to the film inside the eye called retina. With age the jelly starts separating from the retina, stimulating it causes flash like symptoms. These are significant only if associated with plenty of black spots or a shadow in the field of vision or if you have a high minus power glass lens. Also, a routine retina evaluation every year should be done to rule out any weak spots on the retina, which can be sealed if required. In case there is any one in your blood relations who has had a retinal detachment, it is even more important to get your eyes dilated for complete retina evaluation yearly. Q. I wear contact lenses and my power is -1.00 for both eyes. I've been wearing glasses since the age of eight and started wearing lenses from the age of 21. Presently I am 25 and married for 2 years. I see a tiny black dot at a distance which moves with my eyeball. After few days it turns dull and disappears. This has been happening for the past one year. I've noticed that the dot generally appears after crying but I can't be sure of that. When it first appeared I showed it to an eye specialist who said

40

A. The symptom you have described is very common in most people specially in myopia, that is those who have minus power. This is due to liquefying of the vitreous jelly inside the eyeball producing floaters like the one you have described. Sometimes they look like cobwebs, sometimes like dots and they float with the eye movement. They are absolutely harmless and should be ignored. More importantly if you notice any sudden flashes of light with plenty of black floaters, you should get the inside of the eye, the retina examined by an eye specialist. Q. I am 26 years old. For the past few months, whenever I wake up in the morning, my left eye swells up leading to pain. Then automatically after an hour, the swelling subsides and the pain also goes away. This problem occurs at least thrice every week. What is the reason for the swelling and what precautions do I need to take? A. Swelling and pain in one eye could be due to many reasons. One important thing to differentiate is the site of the swelling - whether it is the eyelid or the white surface of the globe. If the problem is in the lids, suspect something behind the globe, for example changes due to increased orbital pressure like in thyroid disease or orbital masses or inflammation. If it is in the eye (globe) it could be inflammation of the layers of the eye. In both cases you need a thorough eye examination of the eyes to rule out underlying diseases.

Rao Narender Singh Health Minister- Haryana

ACHIEVEMENT Sex ratio has improved in Haryana

The sex ratio in Haryana has improved to 850 females per 1000 males by December, 2012 as against 830 females per 1000 males as per the census 2011. This improvement in sex ratio is the result of the innovative schemes being implemented by the State Government. This was disclosed by Haryana health minister Rao Narender Singh in a Panchayti Raj Sammelan organized under the aegis of National Rural Health Mission by Haryana health department in Panchkula. He said that this programme has been organized for the first time in the state as per the directions of Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and very soon such programme would be organized in district Mahendergarh also. He urged the representatives present in the Sammelan to share the experiences of today's Sammelan with the common people and provide all the necessary information about various schemes and programmes being implemented by the health department. He said that under the leadership of Mr Hooda, four new medical colleges are being set up in the state. This would not only meet the need of more number of doctors but would also provide better medical education to the youth of the state. He said that UPA government has included Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram of Haryana government in its leading programmes and it was launched by UPA Chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi in district Mewat. He recalled that this programme of Haryana was widely appreciated in a programme organized on child mortality rate at Tamil Nadu between February 7 and 9. He said that such programmes would yield better results with the participation of Panchayati Raj Institutions. Rao Narender Singh said that Haryana is the first state of the country where free medicines are being provided to the patients in government hospitals and economical surgery packages are also being given to the poor. Under 102 referral

vehicle facility, ambulance facility is being provided to the poor at their doorstep. A network of about 350 such ambulances is operational in the whole state. While referring to declining sex ratio in the state, he said that Panchayati Raj Institutions could play a positive role in this direction. PreNatal Diagnostic Techniques Act has been implemented strictly in the state. The health minister said that healthy and prosperous Haryana is the dream of Mr Hooda. Before the tenure of Mr Hooda, the budget of the health department was Rs 300 crore which has now been increased to Rs 1600 crore. It is only the result of farsightedness of Mr. Hooda that first women medical college of the country after independence has been set up at Khanpur Kalan in district Sonepat. Raising the slogan of 'Gyan Hamara, Swasthya Tumhara, Isse Ho, Har Angan Khushiyara', chief parliamentary secretary, Health,Ram Kishan Fouji said that to improve upon the sex ratio there is a need to change thinking of the people and for this public representatives elected by the people could play a significant role. MLA Panchkula Mr D K Bansal, Chairperson Panchkula Zila Parishad Mr Rajesh Kona, Principal Secretary, Health Department, Mrs Navraj Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner Panchkula, Mrs Ashima Brar and Director General, Health, Dr Narender Arora also spoke on the occasion. On this occasion, Health Minister released three books related to various schemes of Health Department and also honoured the ASHA workers who have made outstanding contribution in implementing various schemes of the health Department with cash prizes. Asha Worker of Barwala, Mrs Suman was given away a cash award of Rs 4500 as first prize, Asha Worker of Manaktabra, Mrs Mamta and Asha Worker of Budhanpur, Mrs Manju were given cash prizes of Rs 4000 and Rs 3000 as second and third prizes respectively. Also other Asha Workers who have made significant contributions were also honoured with cash prizes of Rs 1500 each.

with gum disease. Gingivitis (the early stages of gum disease) occurs when gums become inflamed and bacteria invade the tissues. What research shows about gum disease and the heart’ Experts in period ontology and cardiology recently reviewed more than 120 published medical studies, position papers and other data on the heart and a possible dental health link. They developed a consensus report, published simultaneously in the Journal of Periodontology and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Healthy teeth Healthy heart... Though the link between dental health and heart health is not completely clear, experts say it's important to take care of both. Paying attention to your dental hygiene and health -especially your gums -- may pay you back with more than a gleaming, healthy smile and manageable dental bills. It may keep your heart healthy too. However, the keyword is may. Cardiologists and dentists who treat gum disease have long debated the link between dental health and heart disease. But the issue still is not completely resolved. While there are several theories, it is not clear whether gum disease actually has a direct link to heart disease. If it's true that people with poor oral health have more heart attacks, it doesn't necessarily mean that poor oral health causes them. People with good oral hygiene may just be taking better care of themselves. In other words, people who floss and brush their teeth may also exercise regularly and have other heart-healthy habits. Gum disease and heart disease: How could they be linked? Experts do agree that there are plausible reasons why dental health and heart health may be linked. For example, inflammation is a common problem in both diseases. Narrowing of the arteries or atherosclerosis, is associated with inflammation. Much of the build up of fatty plaque, also called atheroma (not the same as dental plaque) in the arteries is an inflammatory process. Inflammation is also associated

42

The aim of the paper was to give cardiologists, periodontists and other health professionals a better understanding of the links between gum disease and heart disease. But much of the information is also helpful to consumers. The report makes these points: A review of several published studies finds that gum disease is in itself a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Analysis of the large National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US found that gum disease is an important risk factor for diseases of the blood vessels and the arteries that supply the brain, especially strokes that involve insufficient blood or oxygen reaching the brain. Data from another study of more than 50,000 people found that those with fewer teeth and more gum disease had a higher risk of stroke. However, other studies have not shown an obvious association between gum disease and stroke. Other research found a direct link between clogged arteries in the legs (peripheral vascular disease) and gum disease. Healthy teeth, healthy heart? Though the link between dental health and heart health is not completely clear, experts say it's important to take care

of both. The consensus: No consensus Although the report was a consensus of sorts, the link is far from definitive, experts say. There is no solid science to demonstrate a direct link between heart health and oral health. However, in two areas experts generally agree: · Bacteria found in both health problems are similar. The bacteria found in gum disease are also found in blood vessels undergoing atherosclerosis. · Inflammation is another common denominator for both diseases. When people have moderate to severe gum disease, their levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein that rises during whole-body inflammation, increase. Advice for a healthy heart and gums

Keep Your Heart Healthy The American Heart Association has identified several risk factors. Some of them can be modified, treated or controlled, and some can't. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing coronary heart disease. Also, the greater the level of each risk factor, the greater the risk. For example, a person with a total cholesterol of 300 mg/dL has a greater risk than someone with a total cholesterol of 245 mg/dL, even though everyone with a total cholesterol greater than 240 is considered high-risk. The major risk factors that can't be changed? Increasing age — Over 83 percent of people who die of coronary heart disease are 65 or older. At older ages, women who have heart attacks are more likely than men are to die from them within a few weeks. Male sex (gender) — Men have a greater risk of heart attack than women do, and they have attacks earlier in life. Even after menopause, when women's death rate from heart disease increases, it's not as great as men's. Heredity (including Race) — Children of parents with heart disease are more likely to develop it themselves. African Americans have more severe high blood pressure than Caucasians and a higher risk of heart disease. Heart disease risk is also higher among Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians and some Asian Americans. This is partly due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes. Most people with a strong family history of heart disease have one or more other risk factors. Just as you can't control your age, sex and

44

Dr. Anil Mishra M.D. (Medicine) Consultant Physician & Cardio-Diabetologist race, you can't control your family history. Therefore, it's even more important to treat and control any other risk factors you have. The major risk factors you can modify You can modify, treat or control by changing your lifestyle or taking medicine and to adopt as follows : Tobacco smoke — Smokers' risk of developing coronary heart disease is 2–4 times that of non-smokers. Cigarette smoking is a powerful independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary heart disease; smokers have about twice the risk of non-smokers. Cigarette smoking also acts with other risk factors to greatly increase the risk for coronary heart disease. People who smoke cigars or pipes seem to have a higher risk of death from coronary heart disease (and possibly stroke) but their risk isn't as great as cigarette smokers'. Exposure to other people's smoke increases the risk of heart disease even for non-smokers. High blood cholesterol — As blood cholesterol rises, so does risk of coronary heart disease. When other risk factors (such as high blood pressure and tobacco smoke) are present, this risk increases even more. A person's cholesterol level is also

affected by age, sex, heredity and diet. High blood pressure — High blood pressure increases the heart's workload, causing the heart to thicken and become stiffer. It also increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and congestive heart failure. When high blood pressure exists with obesity, smoking, high blood cholesterol levels or diabetes, the risk of heart attack or stroke increases several times. Physical inactivity — An inactive lifestyle is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Regular, moderate-to vigorous physical activity helps prevent heart and blood vessel disease. The more vigorous the activity, the greater your benefits.

However, even moderate-intensity activities help if done regularly and long term. Exercise can help control blood cholesterol, diabetes and obesity, as well as help lower blood pressure in some people. Obesity and overweight — People who have excess body fat — especially if a lot of it is at the waist— are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke even if they have no other risk factors. Excess weight increases the heart's work. It also raises blood pressure and blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. It can also make diabetes more likely to develop. Many obese and overweight people may have difficulty losing weight. But by losing even as few as 10 pounds, you can lower your heart disease risk. Diabetes mellitus — Diabetes seriously increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Even when glucose levels are under control, diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, but the risks are even greater if blood

sugar is not well controlled. About three quarters of people with diabetes die of some form of heart or blood vessel disease. If you have diabetes, it's extremely important to work with your healthcare provider to manage it and control any other risk factors you can. What other factors contribute to heart disease risk? Stress — Individual response to stress may be a contributing factor. Some scientists have noted a relationship between coronary heart disease risk and stress in a person's life, their health behaviors and socio-economic status. These factors may affect established risk factors. For example, people under stress may overeat, start smoking or smoke more than they otherwise would. Alcohol — Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure, cause heart failure and lead to stroke. It can contribute to high triglycerides, cancer and other diseases, and produce irregular heartbeats. It contributes to

obesity, alcoholism, suicide and accidents. The risk of heart disease in people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol (an average of one drink for women or two drinks for men per day) is lower than in nondrinkers. One drink is defined as 1-1/2 fluid ounces (fl oz) of 80-proof spirits (such as bourbon, Scotch, vodka, gin, etc.), 1 fl oz of 100- proof spirits, 4 fl 35 oz of wine or 12 fl oz of beer. It's not recommended that nondrinkers start using alcohol.

guessing. ANTI AGING TIPS Breathe Easy People spend about 90% of their time indoors. Consequently, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors. Cut down on indoor triggers of allergies and asthma by following these simple tips: Remove pets from the home and thoroughly clean to eliminate their dander. Opt for leather furniture rather than upholstered pieces, since leather is an impervious material that is resistant to breeding dust mites. Eliminate dirty carpets and drapes. Dust both vertical and horizontal surfaces weekly. Keep indoor humidity below 50% year round. Open windows for an hour each day during dry seasons to improve ventilation. Use a HEPA air filter in the bedroom Clean mold off shower curtains, bathroom and basement walls and other surfaces with a solution of bleach, detergent and water. Use a dehumidifier if your basement is damp or musty. Never allow smoking in the house. "The air within homes and other buildings can be seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities." ~ Environmental Protection Agency Simple Tips to Manage Stress Among the ways to reduce your stress levels, some of the top ways involve being good to yourself: Poor morale and outlook can be contagious. Avoid people who speak and behave negatively. Rather, stick with friends who find that silver lining and share your enthusiasm for life.

46

Reward yourself with meditation and self-reflection. Set aside a focused period of quiet time each day during which you contemplate inner peace and mind-body wellness. Enjoy the pleasures of deep breathing. Clear both mind and body of stress-inducing blockages by fully inhaling and exhaling for ten minutes at a time, three times daily. Lower the Lead A lifetime of low-level exposure to lead in the environment may contribute to mental decline as we age, reported researchers at Harvard School of Public Health. Tracking 466 men averaging 67 years of age, the team found that the higher the men's level of lead present in the kneecap, a bone marker of cumulative lead exposure, the worse they scored in tests of memory, attention, language, and other mental functions. A separate study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (USA) found that accumulated lead exposure increases the risk of cataracts, a leading cause of age-related blindness. The team tracked 642 men aged 60 and older for five years, finding that those who developed cataracts had increased levels of lead in their bones. Older people, who are prone to osteoporosis, are particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of lead because the toxin lodges in bone poses and can be released over a long period of time into the bloodstream, allowing it to damage body tissue. Lead can be present in gasoline and paints available in India, but leaded products may be available in other nations, putting those residents at-risk. Drinking water may also be a possible source of lead, as the toxin can be introduced via older plumbing. "Make up your mind to be happy. Learn to find pleasure in the simple things." By following these tips, one can stay and look younger even in the age of above fifty.

Answers by : Dr. Deblina Bhowmick M.B.B.S., M.S. (Gynae & Obst.) Laparoscopic Surgeon, Infertility Specialist well. We have an open staircase - one false move and he could be on the basement stairs. It's dangerous, but I hate to discourage him from climbing stairs, since our house has three levels. Is there a device made to protect children from falling through the stairs?

Pregnancy & Child Care

A. You do have a serious problem and it needs a quick solution. You'll have to make the stairs safe for your son, as there is no way that you can keep constant watch on him for the next four to five years. Falls from more than three feet up can result in very serious and even fatal injuries. Please follow the suggestions below as soon as possible. Until then, do not let your child out of your sight.

Q. What diet suppliment should be taken during pregnancy?

· A sturdy gate should be installed at the top of the stairs, with fixed - not pressured - attachments.

A. Most mothers who are eating healthy, balanced diets do not need vitamin supplements during pregnancy. You will have taken your folic acid - the one crucial additive to your normal diet - up to at least the 12th week of gestation, and there is no harm in staying on this supplement, but other than that, all the nutrients you need can be found in fresh, good quality food.

· Another should be installed three steps from the bottom.

If you are keen to ensure that your vitamin and mineral intake is correct, go through your normal diet with your midwife. If she feels that it's needed, she may recommend you take a product specifically designed for pregnancy. Whatever you do, don't take other supplements without consulting a professional first. Certain vitamins and minerals can be dangerous for your unborn baby if taken in the wrong doses. Remember, it is always preferable to get your dietary needs fresh from their natural sources by eating well and looking after your health. Q. My son is 19 months old and climbs the stairs fairly

· The space between the vertical railings should be smaller than the diameter of your child's head. To do this, add rails, plywood boards or other solid barriers between the horizontal hand and foot rails. · When our boys were little, we attached fishermen's netting across the stair banister opening by nailing it to the top and bottom rods. This allowed safety, as well as the passage of light. We lived with a nautical look until I caught them sliding down the banister and knew they had grown out of the need for that restraint. · Carpeted stairs are safer than hard surfaces, and the rise between stairs - if it's open - should be smaller than the size of your child's head so he can't slip through that opening either. Since he's somewhat of a novice walker, I'd rather see him perfect his climbing skills on a low play device for now. Consider getting one - new or used - as a present. It sounds like you have an athlete on your hands!

Q. I read in a book that it's important to toughen your nipples during pregnancy to breast feed. Is this so? What am I supposed to do? A. This is really old advice. There is no need to prepare your breast to breast-feed. Some people worry about inverted nipples, ones that go in with stimulation rather than protrude. However, these nearly always become protruberant later on in pregnancy. There is no need for breast massage or wearing nipple shields. Some people worry about breast stimulation during pregnancy. The hormone that is released with breast stimulation also makes the uterus contract. However it only does so if the uterus is ready for labour. There is no evidence that nipple stimulation causes pre-term labour or miscarriage. Many antenatal classes have sessions on breast-feeding. The important advice for encouraging breast-feeding is as follows. Put the baby to the breast early after delivery, do not give bottles or fluid supplements and make sure that the baby has the whole nipple and surrounding areola in his mouth. Getting the baby to do this last thing may require help. Q. My daughter is 22 months old. She's afraid to be near my sister's Labrador retriever. If you put the dog in another room, though, she cries and asks for the dog. How do we help her overcome her fears? A. She will conquer them herself over time. She is already trying to like him and to deal with his active approaches. A big dog can be pretty overwhelming -- bouncing around, licking, whimpering, barking, hungry for attention. All of these are typical behavior of a 2-year-old, too. So she wants to understand and come to like him, but he's too much all at one time. Slow down to introduce him for short periods. She'll learn ways to deal with him but respect the fact that it may have to be a gradual process. At this age, however, don't ever trust the two of them alone together, as they are both unpredictable. Even a very tame and friendly dog will snap if provoked by a toddler. Keep them under careful watch while they get to know one another. Q. I was married in last year. Now we are planning for our family growth. Is there any pre-pregnancy tips? If so please advice.

Pre-pregnancy Counseling is very important but neglected issue in our country. Couples should consult obstician for prepregnancy counseling for any hereditery disease which runs in the family, for example: HEAMOPHOLIA, THALASSEMIA and muscular dystrophives. Even if there is family history of diabetes, mother should undergo GTT(Glucose Tolerance Test) before planning for pregnancy, so that major anomalies could be avoided. Folic acid supplements should be started once couple plan for pregnancy. Q. My pregnancy test has become positive. What should I do during my pregnancy? A. It is important to have routine antenatal visits ast follows : Routine VSG in first Trimester. Level II VSG in the 2nd trimester and quadruple test to rule out major anomaly are must. In high risk cases CVB2 test is advised to rule out repetition of conjectual defect in the foetus. We can avoid giving birth to down syndrome with multiple anomalies and can reduce psychological trauma to the couple.

Tooth cavity - myths and facts Dr. Nishtha, B.D.S.

Only one of the following statements is true. Do you know which one? 路 Eating acidic foods like lemons causes cavities. 路 If you have a cavity, you'll definitely know it. 路 Once you treat a cavity, the tooth decay stops. Check the myths and facts below to find out how cavities are caused, prevented and treated.

acids, has a disinfectant quality, washes away bacteria, and helps prevent food from sticking to the teeth.

1. Sugar is the prime cause of cavities

4. Aspirin placed next to a tooth will help toothache

Myth : . In reality, it's the acid produced by bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities. What the bacteria do, however, is digest carbohydrates -- and sugar is one of these, as are rice, potatoes, bread, fruit and vegetables.

Myth. Swallowing aspirin is what helps relieve toothache pain. Since aspirin is acidic, placing it beside the tooth can actually burn your gum tissue, causing an abscess.

Fact : When you eat anything with carbs, the bacteria become active and produce acid that then eats into your tooth. They can then lurk in the cavity where the toothbrush and floss can't reach. The bacteria continue to metabolise carbs, produce acids, and your cavity keeps getting bigger. It's not the amount of carbohydrates you eat that causes tooth decay, but the length of time your teeth are exposed. If you eat a lot of carbs for lunch, that's a big exposure. But if you spend the day sipping sugary drinks, that's continuous exposure -- and much more dangerous for your teeth. 2. Exposure to acidic foods like lemons causes tooth decay Fact. Acidic foods such as lemons, citrus juices, or soft fruit drinks don't cause cavities, but they may be putting your enamel in danger. Acids can cause erosion of the toothprotecting enamel, thus weakening the tooth. If you lose the enamel's protection and expose the underlying dentin, the tooth is more prone to decay. 3. Children are a lot more likely to get cavities than adults Myth : With the help of fluoride in the water or toothpaste, preventative care and the judicious use of sealants, tooth decay in school age children has been dramatically reduced. Fact : However, there's been an increase in cavities in older people, for a number of reasons. For example, some medications dry out the mouth and reduce saliva. Saliva is vital in fighting tooth decay because it helps neutralise

5. All fillings eventually need replacing Myth. An amalgam or composite filling needs to be replaced if it breaks down or a cavity forms around it, or if the tooth fractures. If none of those problems occur, you may be able to keep the same filling for life. Fact : Fillings do have a life expectancy, but much depends on things like tooth wear and oral hygiene habits. If you brush your teeth properly at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss or use an interdental cleaner at least once a day, you'll have less tooth decay and your fillings may last longer. 6. If you have a cavity, you'll know it. Myth. That really is a myth. Mild tooth decay does not cause symptoms. The pain we associate with cavities comes when tooth decay is more advanced and causes damage to the nerve. Fact : Allowing tooth decay to advance can lead to much more complicated and expensive dental procedures, like root canal treatment and crowns. That's why regular dental checkups are so important. Also, once a cavity starts, it doesn't repair itself. It will always grow once you get to a point where you can't clean it out any longer. Once decay penetrates the dentin of the tooth -- below the enamel -- the cavity will continue to grow. 7. Once a tooth is treated, the decaying stops Fact : You may get decay later in other areas of the tooth, but

49

the particular decay that was removed is gone. Once you get a cavity filled -- and if you maintain good brushing and flossing techniques -- you won't usually get decay in that spot again. However, sometimes a filling gets old and the margins where it meets the tooth begin to break down or pull away, and because you can't reach it to clean it out, bacteria can get in and decay can start again. 8. Cavities are more likely between teeth. Fact : Anywhere bacteria can hide (and where you can't reach with a toothbrush or floss) is a likely place for decay -- the deep grooves on the back of your front teeth, for example. And it can happen between teeth because the toothbrush won't get in there and many people just don't floss.

13. Clenching and grinding leads to cavities. Myth and sometimes fact. Clenching and grinding is one of the most destructive things you can do to your teeth. With normal chewing, teeth touch for just milliseconds and suffer very little stress. But clenching and grinding puts tremendous pressure on your teeth for extended periods. That strain can eventually cause damage, and cracks and fractures in your teeth. If those fractures expose the weaker dentin, tooth decay can form at a faster rate. Grinding and clenching often lead to the need for crowns to restore the fractured tooth or root canal treatment for the traumatised nerve. Clenching and grinding can also lead to problems with the jaw joints.

9. Gaps in teeth encourage cavities. Fact : but it depends on the size of the gap. If you have a small gap between your teeth and can't clean it, you're more likely to develop tooth decay there. Bigger gaps are easier to keep clean, and as long as they are free of bacteria, big gaps are less likely to develop tooth decay. 10. Chips and cracks in teeth lead to decay. Fact : If cracks and chips create a hiding place for bacteria, a spot where your toothbrush can't reach, those areas are more prone to tooth decay. Dentists say they have been seeing more cracks in teeth lately because people are grinding their teeth. Stress and money worries, for example, make some people grind their teeth more. 11. Sensitivity in teeth means you have decay Myth: Tooth sensitivity could just mean you have hypersensitive teeth, or gum recession has exposed some root surface. Another possible cause is that over-enthusiastic or the wrong kind of brushing has worn away the enamel where the tooth and gum meet. You could also have a cracked or broken tooth or need root canal treatment. 12. Cavities are the prime reason for root canal treatment. Myth : You need root canal treatment if the nerve inside a tooth is damaged. Untreated cavities may eventually lead to nerve damage, but there are other causes. Cracks, fractures, or other types of trauma to the tooth can also cause nerve damage, and clenching and grinding can traumatise a tooth severely enough to need root canal treatment.

14. You don't need to worry about cavities in baby teeth. Myth : Baby teeth hold the space for permanent teeth. If cavities are left untreated in baby teeth, they can cause severe pain and the development of abscesses. Occasionally the infection can spread to other areas of the body and in rare occasions could be extremely serious. 15. Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent cavities. Fact : Definitely. Prevention is the key. You need to remove bacteria from teeth by brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and also flossing. If bacteria are removed daily from every area of your tooth, you can prevent cavities.

HEADACHE TRIGGER & SOLUTION Reasons of Headache Triggers

people who are susceptible to migraines.

Your Boss

Poor Posture

Yes, your boss really can give you a headache. Anything that boosts your stress level can make you more vulnerable to tension headaches or migraines. The exact mechanism for these headaches is unclear and may involve different factors. A heightened sensitivity of nerve pathways in the brain that relay pain may play a role. Changes within the brain itself may also be involved in migraine headaches.

You don't have to work up a sweat to build pressure in the head and neck muscles. Slouching at your desk will do the job, too. Common forms of poor posture include hunching your shoulders, using a chair with no lower-back support, staring at a monitor that is too low or too high, and cradling a phone between your ear and shoulder. If you have frequent tension headaches, take a good look at your workspace.

Weather When the temperature changes, so does the likelihood of developing a migraine. Whether it's a heat wave or a cold snap, the change can trigger a headache. Sunny, hot days are another common culprit. Rain or changes in barometric pressure also may lead to headaches. While you can't change the weather, you can wear sunglasses on a bright day, minimize dehydration, and avoid midday sun. Strong Scents Strong smells -- even nice ones -- trigger migraines in many people. Why this happens is unclear, but the odors may stimulate the nervous system. The most common culprits are paint, perfume, and certain types of flowers. Exercise Strenuous exercise, including sex, can sometimes lead to headaches. Examples include jogger's headache and sex headache. These types of headaches are most common in

Red Wine Tyramine is also found in red wine and other alcoholic drinks. Other ingredients in wine may contribute to headaches as well. Because alcohol increases blood flow to the brain, the effects may be even more intense. If red wine is a trigger for you, but you'd like to enjoy a glass on special occasions, ask your doctor about taking a preventive dose of medication. Skipping Meals Hunger headaches aren't always obvious. If you skip a meal, your head could start to ache before you realize you're hungry. The trouble is a dip in blood sugar. But don't try to cure a hunger headache with a candy bar. Sweets cause blood sugar to spike and then drop even lower. Smoking Smoking is known to trigger headaches -- and not just in the

57

person holding the cigarette. Secondhand smoke contains nicotine, which causes blood vessels in the brain to narrow. Giving up cigarettes or reducing exposure to secondhand smoke appears especially helpful to patients with cluster headaches. These are extremely painful one-sided headaches that can also cause eye and nose symptoms. Caffeine For the headache-prone, caffeine fits firmly into the category of "can't live with it, can't live without it." In moderation, caffeine is often beneficial -- in fact, it's found in many headache medications. But chain-chugging coffee can be a cause of headaches. And, if you're hooked on caffeine, cutting back abruptly may only make things worse. Caffeine withdrawal is another headache trigger. Headache Solutions Identify Triggers If you can identify your most common triggers, you may be able to cut off headaches before they start. The best way to accomplish this is through a headache diary. Keep a daily log of foods you eat, stressful events, weather changes, and physical activity. Whenever you have a headache, record the time it starts and stops. This will help you find patterns, so you can try to avoid your personal triggers. Eat Regular Meals Eating balanced meals throughout the day will help keep your blood sugar on an even keel. That means no more hunger headaches. Aim for meals and snacks that pair a protein with a complex carbohydrate, such as peanut butter on whole-grain bread or chicken breast with brown rice. And be sure to drink enough fluids -- dehydration is another common headache trigger. Physical Therapy Physical therapy combines exercise and education to reduce pain and improve range of motion. In people with tension

58

headaches, physical therapy may help the neck muscles and establish new habits that lead to better posture. Medication Over-the counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are effective against many types of headaches. But avoid taking these drugs continuously, as this can result in medication overuse headaches or rebound headaches -- headache pain that returns as soon as the pills have worn off. For frequent or severe headaches, talk to your doctor about prescription medications that help prevent them. Stretch Your Legs Moderate exercise is a powerful stress reliever. Walking is a great choice because it delivers an extra defense against tension headaches. When you walk, the swinging motion of your arms tends to relax the muscles in your neck and shoulders. Breaking up those knots may help diminish the root of some headaches. When to See a Doctor Any new headache that is unusually severe or lasts more than a couple of days should be checked by a doctor. It's also important to let your health care provider know if the pattern of your headaches changes -- for example, if there are new triggers. If you have a headache accompanied by vision changes, movement problems, confusion, seizure, fever, or stiff neck, seek emergency medical care.
