Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and nylon shaving cupcakes

MATERIALS

1 : 3 ratio of Ordinary Portland Cement to sand. Nylon shavings were used as a material for reinforcement.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and blue pigment cupcake

MATERIALS

1 white cement mixed with water until the consistency felt right. A blue pigment was added to this.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Coconut fibre coated with white cement and coloured pigments.

MATERIALS

White cement with blue and green coloured pigments applied on coconut fibres.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Mortar in the light bulb.

MATERIALS

OPC was used to fill this light bulb. The metal and glass frame inside the bulb was not removed but instead used as a reinforcement.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

White cement with multi-coloured pigments in the form of a cupcake.

MATERIALS

This was one of the first experiments using white cement and colour pigments. We tried to mix a few in this one.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and potato chip cupcakes

MATERIALS

Though this was a cupcake it was made using OPC and “reinforced” using potato chip crumbs.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and fibre glass

MATERIALS

1 : 3 ratio of Ordinary Portland Cement to sand. A bed of fibre glass was used as a material for reinforcement.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and bamboo fibre]

MATERIALS

A mortar nugget reinforced using bamboo fibres that were split by hand.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Motar studded with optical fibers.

MATERIALS

Though we were not able to get the desired “transparent concrete” the results of this were really surprising. It’s nice to know that something considered solid was now closer to being see through.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

White cement with marble effect

MATERIALS

White cement with a marbled effect using the red pigment.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar cupcakes

MATERIALS

We warped cupcake moulds to get these cool forms and shapes in concrete.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Plaster of Paris in egg shell.

MATERIALS

An egg made of POP. The dents on it were a result of not applying petroleum jelly on the inside of the shell, thus we had used a hammer.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar in the form of a plate

MATERIALS

A glass plate with mortar in it to take the shape of the plate.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar with red pigment, Mortar with red oxide and white cement with red pigment.

MATERIALS

Red colour test on grey and white cement mixed with red oxide powder and red pigm itent . The aim was to see how the red would look in different kinds of mortar using different ways to colour it.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

White cement with blue pigment in a plastic bottle.

MATERIALS

White cement plus blue pigment ina plastic bottle gave this very smooth and shiny surface. It looked like it was polished.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

White cement cupcakes with coloured pigments.

MATERIALS

White cement along with green pigment was used to try and make a pattern on the surface of the cement.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Woolen threads dipped in mortar slurry.

MATERIALS

A thread was dipped in a motar slurry and then dried to see how it would dry and set. Due to the nature of the thread the dried motar would crack very easily and was very flimsy.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Mortar in the form of a small dish

MATERIALS

The dish was moulded inside a bowl by hand and was actually supposed to be a rustic serving dish but dried too quickly, cracked and broke.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar moulded in the form of chewing gum.

MATERIALS

Motar chewing gum pieces, which looked very cute after they set.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Potato chips and mortar ladoo.

MATERIALS

A motar ladoo made using potato chip crumbs and soda instead of water. The soda didn’t affect the cement probably as very little was added.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Textured white cement slab

MATERIALS

A plastic bag was used to add a texture on the top of the concrete slab.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Mortar in Amul glass bottle.

MATERIALS

A mortar mixture was poured into the glass bottle to take it’s shape.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Burnt mortar.

MATERIALS

A fire test was performed on a mortar nugget to test what would happen to the nugget after being burnt. The result was that it crumbled very fast. Concrete is normally thought to be fire proof but the nuggget used here had probably not set properly.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Concrete in certain ratios. ( Volume Batching )

MATERIALS

In volumetric batching the components that go into the mix are measured by volume. We went with the ratios 1:2:4, 1:3:6 and 1:5:10. It would have been better if the containers we used were a little larger but they were unavailable. 1 refers to cement, 2 is for fine aggregate and 4 is for course aggregate.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Soda mixed with mortar in a plastic cup.

MATERIALS

Instead of using water in this mix, we tried to experiment with soda. We were trying to see if there were any significant bubbling effects that would appear and could be captured in the mortar. What we discovered was that the mortar had become more crumbly and would break easily.

Concrete

Assignment Explorations

Mortar and soda slab.

MATERIALS

This was a slab that was made with soda instead of water. As you can see we achieved a strong bubbling effect on the underside. Of course this also compromised the strength of the concrete.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Different types of textures on cement.

MATERIALS

A bunch of textures that we tried out. The one with grey cement was showing bubbles, the yellow one had a shiny, polished surface and the white cement piece had leftover dried white cement powder dusted over the top of it.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

Chai glasses moulded with POP bandages.

MATERIALS

We made the mould of chai glasses using POP bandages and painted over it with blue pigment.

Concrete

Documentation

Assignment Explorations

White cement with different coloured pigment.

MATERIALS

White cement cupcake was made and we tried to use large drops of colour without mixing it into the cement properly to see what would happen. Whenever we used pigments we noticed that it made our mixture more watery.
