Behind the Crossword Meet Patrick “Mac” McIntyre Patrick “Mac” McIntyre considers himself a cruciverbalist. If that sounds like someone who dines exclusively on cauliflower and cabbage and other vegetables from the Cruciferae family, you might want to grab your dictionary. Cruciverbalist is a polysyllabic neologism for a crossword puzzle designer or enthusiast. With somewhere between 750 and 1,000 puzzles under Mac’s pencil point, the appellation seems apt.
had already been submitting puzzles to other publication s, so he wondered if he could get one in Real Change. He mailed a puzzle, along with a note addressed to “Whomever deals with the crossword,” asking if his would be considered. The editor at the time requested an electronic copy. Mac emailed it, and his appointment as Real Change’s volunteer puzzle designer commenced. On Dec. 10, 2013, he’ll celebrate his fifth anniversary with the paper, edging on close to 250 puzzles.
“I’ve been a crossword puzzle solver probably since grade school,” says Mac. A fan of word games and Scrabble, his interest in the realm of 1 Across and 1 Down took on greater intensity when he saw the 2006 film “Wordplay,” a documentary about puzzle designers, editors and solvers. He decided he’d like to join When he embarked on his detheir ranks. sign career, he set himself a goal: “To have one of my puzTo be a true puzzle designer, zles published in the New York though, you need solvers, but Times for every day of the where would he find them? week.” For those who don’t go One day in the autumn of crackers for crosswords, Times 2008, Mac bought his weekly puzzles increase in difficulty copy of Real Change. Inside he as the days progress. Monday saw a puzzle. “I noticed [the is the easiest; Saturday is the designer’s] puzzles didn’t aphardest; Sunday has the compear all the time,” he says.Mac plexity of a Thursday puzzle,
but it’s a much larger grid. In 2009, shortly after he started volunteering for Real Change, the New York Times published one of his puzzles in a Thursday edition. Since then, he’s also conquered Monday and Tuesday. He just submitted a Sunday puzzle. If the Times accepts it, you’ll have to wait to inscribe your answers: Mac says there’s a year delay from acceptance to publication. Of course, creating puzzles requires some effort. Mac says he spends between 45 minutes and two-and-a-half hours designing each puzzle. That means in the past five years, Mac has devoted at least 190 hours to making puzzles for Real Change. He wouldn’t have had the freedom in the early 1970s. That’s when Mac moved to Seattle, after graduating from Northwestern University Law School. He worked for Seattle Legal Services (now Columbia Legal Services), which assists low-income people with non-criminal, legal issues. He specialized assisted clients facing issues with welfare. He served as deputy director of Evergreen Legal Services, and Mac was the founding
director of the Northwest Justice Project, which offers legal assistance to and represents thousands of low-income people. He retired in 2007, though he still does pro bono work for the Northwest Justice Project and sits on numerous boards of directors, including for the Washington State Budget and Policy Center. Mac says he’s loved designing puzzles for Real Change. While the puzzles don’t increase in difficulty, he thinks they require some brainpower. Of course, the best way to find out is to try your hand at some. This booklet contains 30 puzzles Mac created for Real Change, including “Five for Five,” Mac’s first puzzle published on Dec. 10, 2008. He also designed two new puzzles: “Role Models for Real Changers,” with a social justice theme, and “Happy Winter Holidays,” about… well, you can figure that out. Whether or not you can solve all the puzzles, only you and your writing implement will know. So sit back, take a deep breath and heat up that six-letter word for “The brainy pasta dish in your head.” (That’s your “noodle,” if you’re wondering.) Now get to solving.

About Real Change Since 1994, Real Change has provided opportunity and a voice for homeless and low-income people while taking action for economic justice.
How can you help? Start with buying the papers. Give a hello to the vendors. They’re working to turn their lives around, and your support matters.
More than 300 Real Change vendors are hard at work each month, bringing you the news you care about and striving for personal success. Our three programs work together to make a difference in people’s lives today and build a movement for economic justice.
DONATE Real Change is reader-supported and relies on public contributions to make our work possible. Your tax-deductible contribution pays for award-winning journalism, courageous organizing and advocacy, and the support our vendors need to succeed.
Vendor Services: Real Change helps more than 300 vendors a month achieve success on their own terms. Services include sales training, vendor incentives and recognition, computer access, skills workshops and service referral.
VOLUNTEER Real Change relies heavily on people like you to help us with our day-to-day needs, from newspaper reporting to vendor services and fund development.
