EDITOR'S NOTE

Moira Conde & Niki Giarimi EDITORS-IN-CHIEF Welcome to the very first (official) issue of Up 2 Date! As many of you already know, this magazine was launched back in Spring 2015 as a Pedagogical Leadership project. Our names are Moira and Niki, and we are currently in SPD3F. When we started this magazine, we had no intention of making it into an after-school club, but students and staff came up to us and told us that they liked the idea a lot. That's why you are currently 'holding' it in your hand! The idea behind this magazine is to give it out once a month, digitally. If you are interested in contributing in any way, could be with articles or even just pictures, please send any of us an email! We will look at everything submitted, so don't hesitate to send us something! You can find our emails on the last page. We hope you like Up 2 Date as much as we do. Feedback is always appreciated as well, so don't be scared to tell us what we could improve on (we know we're not perfect!).

HUMANS OF IEGS

INTERVIEW BY NICOLE CARDENAS

HUMANS OF IEGS “Follow your own bliss”

THIS MONTH: SOFIA ILEKTRA TRIKILI, SPA3D WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE AND WHY?

I would probably give others the same advice I was to give myself which is to follow your own bliss. Because that is how you find your own purpose and when you live with purpose, life becomes more meaningful. So I think that all people, in some way or another, are in search of meaning right? So if I had that opportunity to give a large group of people advice..I mean what is advice really? It’s to give people direction and I think that being in pursuit of happiness is a good direction.” “

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN FIND YOUR BLISS? IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOUR BLISS IS, IT’S HARD TO FOLLOW IT ISN’T IT?” “

We are very limited, we have school and all of these other responsibilities but I think that it all really comes down to priorities. Personally, as long as i’m happy everything gets a whole lot easier, school included. It’s an important priority for me to feel good. Physically, spiritually and mentally. “

Although many people seem to forget the last point our psychological well being, and I think that if you aren’t feeling psychologically well, it is very important to..take a step back and ask yourself “I am not happy, why is that?” and really reflect on that question. That is very important. Because it is just as important to feel good inside of your head, as it is to feel good on the outside, physically.”

HOW DO YOU WANT OTHERS TO REMEMBER YOU FROM YOUR SCHOOL YEARS AND HOW DO YOU THINK THEY WILL REMEMBER YOU?“ “

I am sure they will remember me from Spoken word! Laughs) “The girl that did spoken word.” I still get many comments about the performance I did the same day as the 2014’s song competition was. If people only knew how nervous I was the day before, I was literally crying. But in the end I guess it was worth it. “

(

HUMANS OF IEGS I also think people will remember me as this “deep” girl. I think that that’s because I see everything from a...I don’t want to say spiritual way, but I do see life itself in a very.. carefree way. That being said, I do not mean that I don’t care about anything, no. What I mean is that I take things lightly because I know that tomorrow will be another day. I hope that people will remember me as this open, social person because I speak to everyone all the time. Or I try at least (laughs). I want to be remembered as this girl who went to IEGS and I want them to feel like my presence in school benefitted them in a positive way. Not all of them of course, I know that people are different and I know that some people don’t know who I am and others don’t like me and i’m okay with that. However, majority wise, I do hope that I benefit in a positive way. That’s all. No matter what kind of positive way it is, for example if I bring a smile to someone’s face or inspire someone, then that’s good ‘cause that’s what I want. I aim to inspire. “

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST STRUGGLE RIGHT NOW?” “

Hmm..let me think, cause right now, today I feel so good. Super good! Because I’ve been sick for three days and you know that feeling when you can finally come back and continue with what you were doing before getting sick and continue doing what you’re supposed to do? It feels so good! (laughs). But hmm..struggle? As a matter of fact, I don’t struggle with anything. I don’t believe in struggles. I think that ‘a struggle’ is a choice that one makes, it’s a way to make things heavier for yourself. I believe in just relaxing and going with the flow. So I don’t struggle at all. For other people it might seem like i’m struggling, but not for me. It’s all about perspectives. Challenges on another hand, is a completely different thing. “

INTERVIEW

“I don’t struggle at all.” I see challenges as an opportunity to grow, while struggles limits and stops you. Therefore, I appreciate challenges. I don’t have any insurmountable challenges at this time, my only big challenge is that I need to figure out how to balance my personal life with my school life. Because I care about school, I do. But at the same time I don’t (laughs). So I need to find a way to balance that out, ‘cause you don’t want to just fall behind you know? Now that it’s third year and all (laughs). My advice to someone who is dealing with a struggle or a challenge? Everyone goes through something at some point in their life, everyone. From my own experience, I look at a butterfly, now I know this sounds very poetic and deep but you know how they break down and you think everything is over but then suddenly something beautiful comes out of that although you might not see it at the moment, it will come. The same goes for winter and spring, everything dies you think it’s all over and then BOOM flowers come up, you know what I mean? It’s the same with my spoken word, poetry and whatever - the absolute best ones, come from those moments of when you break down and feel pain. So don’t be too tense and stressed when faced with a challenge, it will always pass, some day it will pass. Don’t ignore it, but know that this too shall pass.”

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Your natural curiosity and genuine desire to learn make it easy for you to move on from outmoded ideas and discover new ones that work. Try not to be too caught up in what has happened in the past and keep your doors open for what is yet to come. Icon made by Freepik from www.flaticon.com

IEGS FUNDRAISER WEEK

IEGS

♼ REFUGEES By Emilia Ganslandt Many of the students here at IEGS felt like they wanted to do something for the refugees. A charity week was launched and would in the end bring in a total amount of almost 13.000kr. When seeing what was happening around the world , students of IEGS refused to stand on the sidelines doing nothing. Instead it was decided to take matters in our own hand and start a fundraiser of our own. Meanwhile you could see in the media about how other volunteers, company's, ordinary people and foremost schools were making a difference.

100% of money raised was donated to the Red Cross!

Before the project, many people were keen on helping but no one really knew how to. Everyone cared and wanted to do something, the question of what, however, still remaining. There were so many people doing what they could, that some students felt like we ought to do what we can as well.

The idea of a charity week was brought to light and it was full speed ahead from there. The idea was brought up with teachers and other students, everyone being very positive to the fundraising idea. Together with Mrs.Gavin the week was starting to form. On the first meeting about the charity week only four people showed up, however during the two weeks used to plan the fundraiser many people volunteered to help, making the group grow bigger. One week was all we had to reach our goal. During that week students did all sorts of things to raise money and aid. A basketball tournament was held, there was movie night, band aids were being collected and pastries were sold. On the Tuesday everyone was encouraged to bring one kr to school, showing that even the smallest amount can make a big difference if everyone contributes. Throughout the week almost 200 bracelets were also sold. In the end the goal of raising 10.000kr was beyond reached and the students here at IEGS had truly shown that if we work together we can achieve incredible things.

OCTOBER 2015

SUBJECT SPOTLIGHT: LANGUAGES This month, the spotlight is shining on the subject "languages", and why studying them is beneficial and fun beyond the school benches. Some of us hate studying them, some love doing it. What they have in common is that we all know at least one of them. I am, of course, talking about languages. Whatever your opinion about studying languages is, there is an undeniable truth about them; they are all around us, at all times. Even when you're silent, you are in some way communicating, be in body- or sign language. However, I want to move focus to the verbal language, the one that differs depending on where on earth you are. We might not think of their importance in our daily lives, but whenever you set your foot on another country's ground, the language barrier is usually one of the first things you notice. But what if it wasn't like that? What if, you could navigate yourself (and your loved ones) in a completely new environment? Sure, the culture clash might still be there, but imagine the sense of familiarity and confidence that could wash over you when you're able to communicate with the locals.

Ok, you think, but what if I'm not interested in traveling to countries where they speak another language that I don't know? Well, my answer is simply that it doesn't matter. Studying language can be useful even if you aren't planning on relocating to a completely different place. Why else would you think people study dead languages, such as Latin? When you learn one language, it is always easier to learn another (fine, learning Swedish might not help your Japanese studies), and who wouldn't want to be fluent in five languages for fun? That's a pretty sweet party trick to flaunt if you ask me. And even better: imagine all the culture you could consume (literature, films, songs) that are only available to speakers of this particular language. Speaking different languages, and then exploring their origins and cultures, will give you a broader world view, without going on an expensive trip to a country far away. And the best thing about languages? You usually only need an internet connection and a computer to learn one. Or a library card, if you're feeling old school.

CREATIVE WRITING PRESENTS

POETRY "THE POEM YOU ASKED FOR."

My poem is blank, it consists of nothing. It lives somewhere far, in a world of its own where it wonders curiously on this planet of ours. While we get caught up in our lives & our daily struggles. My poem remains blank, and cannot be defined.

"I DREAMED & I WISHED"

I dreamed of a place better than this, while I wouldn't do no better. I wish I could accept the misery of what is to come. Nothing but stress and anxiety is what seems to be going on. I dreamed of a mindstate full of relaxation and peace, I wish that mindstate would last more than just a week. We heard still small voices then. Whispering little sweet, delicate words. Who can hear them now? Maybe the voices have faded. Or did we shut them out? I dream of hope and death The hope that those I love will live on And that they don’t That I will cross the valley, balancing on my tight rope, and survive And that I won’t That I will hold my child in my arms And that I won’t I dream that I will die screaming joyous melodies And that I'll die in silence I wake up in fear of happy dreams of a bright future And sleep tight in the nightmares from hell I see these things every day And still dont know what I want Do I favour bright sunshine Or burning pains of hell Oh help me god Cause I cannot tell

"WHY DOES THE MOON GO DRESSED IN CLOUDS?"

Why do animals scour when seen Why don’t they let you get lost and see them as the most beautiful things that’s ever been We only get to peek at what’s underneath but still we pine for what is hidden oh please let us see your true beauty and let all our desires be ridden I think she is scared for not wanting to be seen Cause people are easily disappointed reality is never as good as it could have been

"HAIKUS & HAIGAS" A FORM OF TRADITIONAL JAPANESE POETRY

They save themselves for that short moment when they truly are the most beautiful things that’s ever been cause after that they have nothing left just a memory of a disappointed dream

What if I woke up and realised I was a disgusting bug? Morning shadow falls A battle of mist and feet Framing a frail light I would not call for winds to comfort me

And an additional poem, not from Creative Writing: "#LÄGGNERERAVAPEN"
