Having sealed its position in histroy as a port town, Cochin flourished. Fort cochin is the more European area with its bunglows and churches, whereas Matancherry housed the indegeneous population. There is a sharp distinction in Fort Cochin and Mattancherry as different entities creating barriers in our perception of the city as both parts are equally important in the historic process of the city.
Fort Cochin is connected to Mattancherry by Bazar Road. Fort Cochin and Mattancherry grew as 2 focii with the connecting commerical strip Bazaar road. At its Southern end is a building complex which include, the Raja’s house (Dutch Palace) a Hindhu temple and adjacent to that Jew Town with its Pardesi Synagogue.
Bazaar Road
The Bazaar Road is the point from which all trade took place. The buildings were one next to the other and on most occasions shared common walls. There were linear passage ways leading to the water form the road used as pedestrian pathways as well as for the transportation of goods. All goods were transported by water hence the road itself is quite narrow. The godows had their own Jettys and had openings towards the water. The establishemnts and godwons were organised according to heirarchy, the larger establishments were located along the water and the smaller ones inward. The Canal was also once naviagble and was used to transport goods inland.
Building Typology
Building Height
Roof Type
The godowns, though they were of the same architetcural language, are interestingly different in style and language. The facade shows a continous row of buildings but are porous with yards for drying and storage. Each building shows influences of its users.
Mattancherry has witnessed a very evolved growth with the growth and settlement of various communities. The old access streets like Palace Road and New Road remain predominantly commercial and link important religious precincts.
The old acess streets are the predominant commercial and link important religious structures and institutions. The residential areas are structured as community blocks, generally clustered around their places of worship
Documentation
CulturalReflections Reflections Cultural
Any intervention would have to concern the whole strip as no site can be developed in isolation. The thesis is a demonstration of what could happen along the whole strip with a portion of it detailed. Conclusions from documentation -All the buildings regardless of the time period they were built in have followed similar proopertions. Height being 10 - 12 meters width 8 - 10 meters -The were distinct bands of function, Industrial close to the water edge - Commercial along the road side - Residential along with Public and Religious. -There was no view to the water from any point along the strip.
Guidelines for development - The existing proportions to be followed to preserve the character of the place. - A promonade to be developed along the road side as well as along the waters edge in addition to a tertiary spine connecting all the buildings. - More retail and public spaces to be added, revival of boat buildings functions, activation of jettys. Some building envelopes have been retained along the strip wherever the buildings have been salvagable, this helps retain the identity of the place. Modification in the internal structure helps the building better adapt to the new function.

Courts make for easy transition form the built to the open. Multiple functions open out into a common court making them a gathering space. Courts also work well with the climate of Cochin and are a transition space between the builta nd the open.
