LA VIOLA

Hong Kong

OBJECTIVE To re-design an Italian restaurant in the western district of Hong KongSai Ying Pun.

LA VIOLA, SAI YING PUN

LOCATION

DESIGN STATEMENT The concept for La Viola was inspired by the architecture of the Basque Culinary Centre in Spain which was in the style of Deconstructivism. Deconstructive interiors are interiors that stress on the idea to show how something is constructed, but still be functional as a form of art or architecture. It forces the viewer to ponder about how things are put together. The restaurant being high-end casual dining, priority was given to the number of seating, food and ambience. The space is divided into two areas- Bar and Dining area. The colour scheme used is Complimentary colour scheme Tan and Midnight blue being the prime colours used. The overall space gives the feel of a modern deconstructed restaurant serving good quality deconstructed food.

EXHIBITION DESIGN VENICE BIENNALE 2016 Florence Design Academy September - November 2016

DUBAI PAVILLION, VENICE BIENNALE 2016

Venice, Italy

OBJECTIVE To design a Pavillion for a country/city of your own choice for the Venice Biennale 2016 held in Arsenale and Giardini in Venice. ABOUT VENICE BIENNALE 2016 The theme of the Venice Biennale 2016 was ‘Reporting from the front’. Aim to shine the light on global issues that architects have the power to influence or solve. 61 countries exhibited that year with Chilean architect Mr. Alejandro Aravena being the curator of the 15th year exhibition. Each participant chooses an problem or phenomenon in a country which is not necessarily their home country; they study the specific problem and recount it embodying the story in an architectural space. DESIGN STATEMENT For our exhibition, we chose Dubai as the city, studied the problems faced by Dubai, the conditions of the labour class being one of the major issues. For our pavillion we decided to depict the hard life of the immigrant workers from south Asian countries in Dubai. The facade was made showing Dubai’s skyline and showing the luxurious side of the city, but as you enter on the west wall you see the problems faced by the labourers, the north wall throws upon you the harsh words of reality the workers undergo, the east wall displays the solutions which we as a team studied and came to a conclusion. The hologram of a worker in the centre of the pavillion is the highlight of the space. The walls of the pavillion are black to depict the dark truth behind the luxurious side of Dubai and the flooring is sand giving it a feel of a desert which Dubai is.
