REGENERATION OF LIGHT INDUSTRIAL AREA MASIEED INDUSTRIAL CITY, QATAR

Masieed light industrial area (LIA) was regionally planned by Qatar Petroleum without allocation of infrastructure or plot division. Recently when LIA was leased out to MANATEQ, Qatar to operate, DORSCH was assigned to assess the existing situation and to come about the solution for all the constraint site is offering. Design task was to regenerate the area with public spaces and industry based plot sub division by overall tying up the area. Already existing industries and infrastructure was acknowledged and final outcome was a retrofit the new design in already functioning space.

Design site includes industries related to construction materials, engineering, plastics, chemicals and metal products and Medium industry area in south. With addition of labor camps and a supporting Hospital and souq, located on different edges, LIA aims to be funnly functional and sustainable area. A 64 meters wide road services this area and Qatar metro will be passing through the middle of the site in near future.

Safe and Inclusive Cities Dynamics of Poverty, Inequality and Violence in Indian Cities: Towards Inclusive Policies and Planning Research Problem and Justification Indian Urbanisation In pre-industrial India, the key urbanisation elements were administration, defence, trade, and religion. Indian urbanisation is shaped,as colonial system, by 5 metropolitan centres: Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. But only 37 percent of urban populations lives in big urban centres rest lives in small - medium towns also known as Census Towns. Migration has played significant role in reshaping Indian cities. The urban system has became distorted because of significant clustering of amenities, rural - urban disparities as well as leading to the formation of divided cities along , political, social and cultural lines. Urban peripheries have degenerated resulting in to more slums formed by Migrants.

Hypothesis

The Context

Research Questions

Inclusive urban planning and governance can play a significant role-in de-escalating urban tensions, conflicts, and violence in the context of India. Conversely, exclusive urban planning and governance can became the driver of urban violence

- How is urban violence on account of endemic deprivations and inequalities experienced differentially by social groups? - How do various mechanisms of urban planning create and deepen endemic deprivations and exclusions thus becoming drivers of urban violence? - What are the geographies of urban violence? - How do urban poor and marginalized groups respond to and cope with violence against them? - How do their responses to violence reshape urban planning and governance mechanisms? - What are the pathways of inclusive urban planning and policies? - What mitigate conflicts and violence?

Deserted stretches are linked to grave forms of violence and hence perceived as high risk zones. These grave forms of violence, not the milder ones, strongly influence women’s perceptions on risk and safety. However, various factors like time, place, presence or absence of people, and purpose, density and composition of crowd interplay with each other to produce diverse perceptions on risk zones and safety, and determine women’s differential access to public spaces.

Neighbourhood represent a perfect Indian neighbourhood. High density with narrow lanes with mix use residential blocks. It neighbours the main commercial belt of the city. The School of Under-privilage school is the main landmark of the area with a famous temple, Arya Samaj Mandir. There are may green plots and setbacks in the area. WALK-ABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD @ WHAMPOA SINGAPORE

Project deals with the design of new housing area, located in Whampoa. Whampoa is characterised as an aged neighbourhood and isolated position of the area, caused by the barrier effects of the two express-ways PIE and CTE. The area known for ‘Balestier Road’, historical market famous for its local delicacy. The purpose of the project is to dissolve the fragmentation of the area, due to isolated interventions and uncoordinated transformation. Also, to generate a recognisable identity by developing the vacant area with residential development, containing a great variation of unit sizes and addressing a differentiated social structure.

NEIGHBOURHOOD’S CURRENT AMENITIES WHY WALK ? The Available mix of communities in the site can potentially be used to enhance the neighbourhood identity of Whampoa. However, these elements are very fragmented. There is little provision for interaction between different communities. This bring us to our strategy of introducing : “Walk - ability” as a means to increase the collision, and hence social interaction.

PROPOSAL The Proposal

THEMATIC PLANS

Three distinct groups of users were identified that moves through Balestier Road - the visiting Aliens (people who visit Balestier Road as an attraction), the By-passing Aliens (people who use Balestier Road as a short cut between two express-ways) and the Natives (people who lives in Whampoa and visit Balestier as an extension of their neighbourhood amenities). By pedestrianising a portion of Balestier Road, we removed a portion of the user- people who are Using Balestier Road as a by-pass. This aids to reduce the traffic congestion situation affecting Balestier Road and transform the quality of space to one which promotes more social interaction. A common pathway connects Balestier Road to the internal system of Whampoa. This axis will Intersect with the existing park connector which is another major public axis within the site. This Pathway gathers and organizes existing points of reference (places where people gather naturally As a result of the programs), as well as new ones that we are creating to encourage walk-ability And interaction for the purpose of community building. Design strategy involves not only the Introduction of a walkway but also the location of external stimuli also it that is associated with The areas that the pathway passes by/through.

ONE NORTH, PHASE 2 SINGAPORE

Project deals with the integration and developing meaningful relationships between the three sites, as well as synergy between industry, public sector and academia. Also, to develop a dynamic fine grained mix use hub as a new focus point or epicentre that will integrate the existing nodes. The Concept is based on the comfortable and stimulating public realm that encourages social interaction. An elevated pedestrian loop is introduced as the centrality of the master plan creating a sense of place with detailed attention to the structure and the elements within it. Along with the commercial office space and academia, the proposed phase two site will have a Expo district to celebrate the interaction of work and learn with residential units as service apartments. The loop will also function as zone of nature, art and entrainment.

PROPOSAL Transportation and Public Space This sub-theme will deal with the urban design issues related to rail transit nodes. While the MTR will easily connect HSK to other areas of Hong Kong, a transportation network is needed within the area itself, generating opportunities to reshape the urban space. New public transport nodes, will generate a new layer of public life, raising spatial questions concerning the redesign of public space, the improvement of outdoor environments and the de-fragmentation of urban morphology.
