DO’s & DON’Ts for ESSAY WRITING

Essay writing is a compulsory academic assignment in some of the Institutions as an entrance test before registration, regardless of course of study. Few students find the essay writing process easy. However, there are many students who make common mistakes while writing the essay, hence knowing the most important dos and don’ts of essay writing will help make this experience less stressful and more productive.

Don’t : No capital letters only. Example: “MY NAME IS SARAH.” Do : Write in Sentence Case. Example: “My name is Sarah.” ________________________________________ Don’t : Divert from the essay topic. Do : Stay focused on the essay topic ________________________________________ Don’t : Forget to introduce yourself with reference to the topic. Do : Introduce yourself with reference to the topic. ________________________________________ Don’t : Write the essay in a single paragraph. Do : Divide the essay into introduction, main body and conclusion. Each paragraph shall explain a new point of discussion about the essay topic. ________________________________________ Don’t : Write in mixed tenses. Example: a. “I did called her last week.” b. “I have seen him yesterday.” Do : Write in a single tense. Example : a. “I did call her last week.” b. “I saw him yesterday. ________________________________________

Don’t : Exceed the limit / length of the essay given by the college. Do : Write the essay within limit given by the college ________________________________________ Don’t : Write spellings you are not sure about. Do : Recheck your essay for any spelling mistakes and sentence errors.
