Nikita Taori (B.Arch - KRVIA’22) Architecture & Design Portfolio Selected Works (2017-2022)

CURRICULUM VITAE

NIKITA K. TAORI I see spaces and their design as a medium to adapt, interact and further create relations and lives. Architecture, to me, serves the purpose of making one’s life easy and bringing joy and spontaneity to it. Through my design I want to bring civic sensitivity and sensibility to all life forms and make our daily life more interesting. I believe that the smallest of the details can bring the greatest of changes hence, I would like my design to be sans scale.

01 : INSTITUTE OF THE COLLECTIVE | An initiative for public participation in Nagpur Semester X Architectural Thesis | Guide - Shirish Joshi | Site - Burdi, Nagpur The research starts with the study of all development projects in the city and aims to objectively analyze the effect they have on the environment, human population, economics, history and culture of the city. It further focuses on citizen participation and understanding their role, history and contribution in these development projects. What is the target audience of the development? How can architecture play a role in maximizing the potential of human involvement in a city? The building aims to provide for a space for people to come together to have conversations and further develop an idea or desire of developing their city as a collective. The government ranks of police officials, ward officials and government workers come together to provide for an interface between the development and the people. The various spaces are curated to ensure enough footfall on the site. The spaces lead and look into each other providing for a sense of connect and communication.

02 : SUPERBLOCK HABITAT | Semester VII Collaborators - Vritti Shah, Raghav Malhotra Architectural Design Studio | Re-imagining Social Housing Guide - Mayuri and Kalpit | Site - P&T Colony Mulund, Mumbai

The project is based in the P&T Colony of Mulund which is a site prone to gentrification . The housing project aims to provide affordable and social housing for all. The space is designed to create revenue for the P&T Colony by providing additional housing other than the residents currently housing the place. The central space has extensive landscape which acts as a place for interaction and as the green patch for the site.

03 : HOUSING FOR MIGRANTS | Semester IX Architectural Design Studio Guide - Manoj Parmar and Aditya Sawant | Site - Kurla, Mumbai

The lives of formal sector workers and gig-economy workers moves at a very fast pace, especially in a city like Mumbai. Since, the work spaces induces a lot of stress and chaos in everyday life - the housing needs to provide pause points and calmness. The housing will aim to create a series of pause/rest points in the complex by the means of congregation and common spaces and in the house of the individual - by creating balconies and smaller private spaces for rest, calm and slowness.

04 : SCHOOL OF ARTISAN FOOD | Semester VI Architectural Design Studio Guide - Jude D’souza | Site - Kohima, Nagaland

The T Khel is abundant in food opportunities but lacks a platform for the display of the same. The proposed culinary institute will be a government based ICI (Indian culinary institute) which will help students come from all over the world and become the identity of Kohima. The institute will also provide for a hostel facility, turning the site into a campus for food lovers. The site also provides for a market area for the locals and students to come together. The site is a natural hill and to create privacy in such a condition - the building has been sunk slightly. The building can be seen as plinths from the street , the bamboo pavilion are the only structure being highlighted from the street.

06 : A MEADOW OF SEASONS | Semester V Architectural Design Studio Guide - Rohan Shivkumar | Site - Mumbra

Seasonal Paralysis A state of complete numbness takes over oneself leaving the person helpless. However, when the affliction is cured, the person feels the affliction to be just a minor discomfort of the past and does not take any action for it which is what makes the affliction recurring. The project aims to bring about a change in the lives of the farming community of Mumbra who are rendered jobless during the non harvesting seasons. It provides for them to preserve and use their produce well and also gain maximum profits from their produce.

The people living here, ie, the orphan boys and the widows seek companionship and bonding and hence the aim of the project is to provide them not just refuge but also to create a situation where they can build a life and a living. The idea is to create spaces and conditions in the structure allow interaction of the people living and also facilitates their interaction with the neighborhood. The balance between the indoor and outdoor spaces have been considered since the weather of Siddhpur is extreme.

The objects that we collect around us open out trajectories of connections with the world, material, functional, and symbolic. These trajectories make communities, structure identities, and are directed and mediated by institutions.

There is also a rice beer production facility in the neighbourhood. The shop is managed by an eighty-year old woman who still makes the rice beer from her family recipe. The locals regularly avail rice beer from the shop since it is the only shop selling the commodity in the T-Khel but, the demand goes up significantly during festivals and events.

The lunar calendar dictates the schedule of the people of the village. The information is verified online and the lunar calendar is then printed at NV Printing Press in the city. It is then sold at shops across Kohima, including the one right outside the press.

The family recieved the rice mill as a wedding gift from one of their neighbours over forty years ago and it continues to be one of their main sources of income.

The month of May marks the festival of celebrating wet cultivation and is celebrated in the form of the Kerunyi festival at the rice paddy fields at a little distance from the city.

The family owns paddy fields near Kohima and has hired labourers to cultivate the rice. All the residents of T-Khel avail the services of the mill for cleaning of their rice.

The Sekrenyii festival is celebrated in month of February which signifies purification. This is held according to the lunar calendar and common rituals include a feast, singing and dancing in the evenings in the peli house.

Khedi Baptist Church

The people following the lunar calendar do not perform any auspicious rituals or activities such as weddings in the church during the duration of the new moon days.

The Rice Mill House The Courtyard House has been rented out to a family of four, who are migrants from Bihar. The father works at multiple jobs throughout the day, including washing cars in the morning and repairing household objects for people. The mother maintains the rice mill adjacent to their residence, which is an integral source of revenue.

10 : E9 COURT RESIDENCE

Competition Entry : Enviach Studio : TML Collaborators : Megha Naniah, Paridhi Gindodiya, Sriraksha Ramesh, Apoorva SN The project is located along a busy road in the south of Bangalore amidst a dense neighborhood that was previously planned in pairs where two units shared a common wall between them. The N9 Courtyard is a penthouse occupying the uppermost floor with access to the terrace. Due to its location along the busy road, the design approach was an introverted one with an attempt to keep out as much noise and dust as possible without cutting off visual or physical associations with the outdoors.

15 : MURAL WORK Murals at ‘THE SUMMER HOUSE’, Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh. Client Brief : 1. SPA WALLS - The intent was to create a wholesome environment by the means of delicate elements and colors. The two walls that were selected for the same helped to stitch the entire spa room together. 2. THE HUB WALL - The intent was to make the place a lively area for people to come together and interact and at the same time not make it too overwhelming. Hence, a colorful and minimal design was opted. The project was done in collaboration with Saloni Pasad and over the course of a week.
