THE MARKET DISTRICT Tallahassee Prominently nestled in northwest Florida, Tallahassee is situated in a region of the Florida panhandle known as the Big Bend and boast of being the states capital. Market District Within this capital city lies Market District which is located at the interchange between Thomasville Road and I-10, the gateway to the city . Positive From its inception, the Market District have been the prime area for various commercial and local businesses such as retail, restaurants, bars, etc. The district’s name was coined after a shopping center developed in 1977. Negative The district is predominantly comprised of commercial and single use office buildings that serve neighboring housing developments such as residential and apartments. However, the area currently cater to those that travel by car, making the pedestrian circulation to various venues difficult.

Located in the great state of Florida, Tallahassee is known for its rich history. As the capital, the city has been dubbed a college town with two well-known universities: Florida A&M and Florida State. Within the city, there is an important commercial zone. This area is located at the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and Magnolia Drive. These major intersecting streets are primary movement generators to the area as persons frequently travel along them to the numerous retail and other commercial venues.

I.M.P.A.- International Market Place on Apalachee Tallahassee, Florida, United States of America Master Plan Building Typology & Phasing The proposed master plan seeks to execute and implement these new modifications through strategic phasing; where there is a clear vision of the unique changes made to the area over 10 year periods.

Existing site at Apalachee Pkwy & Magnolia Drive

Phase 1 The development and upgrade of the current road network system. The first road upgrade is the installation of the loop road system. A tunnel system is implemented along Apalachee Parkway.

In response to these concerns a proposed master plan was created to enlighten the city of Tallahassee about the areas’ potential. Building on the fact that Apalachee and Magnolia is a place of junction, acknowledging Tallahassee as a city that brings people together with a melting pot of diversity and international cultures. The proposed plan represents the theoretical and physically connecting nature of Tallahassee. Hence, the Master plan embraces the architectural concept of connectivity on multiple levels through people, place, space and streets. Emerging from the very essences of that concept flourished IMPA meaning: International Markey Place on Apalachee which has a deep historical connection to Tallahassee’s Seminole Indian Heritage of the Miccosukee language where IMPA means to eat. This ensured that even the name of the place strengthen the concept of connectivity.

Phase 2 Renovation of existing buildings introduction of commercial, retail, mixed-use, and parking garages.

Phase 3 Commercial retail Parking garages Hotel-signature building

Phase 4 Mixed-use Commercial retail Commercial offices

The site is located in Jacksonville, Florida alongside the St. John’s River. This location is very important as it is considered a puzzle piece that connects downtown Jacksonville with the sporting district of Jacksonville. Currently the site is vacant with no existing buildings which provides freedom of the proposed site and building design. It is also flat and will be considered a highly pedestrian friendly site, as it is connected to the river’s boardwalk.

The Regional Art Gallery of Jacksonville Jacksonville, Florida, United States of America The main design goal was to create a threshold/ gateway from the land to the water and to create a major cultural landmark/ destination in Downtown Jacksonville. This was achieved by creating connections to the urban context using strong lines of influence derived from key contextual buildings. The intersection of the lines created a strong play on negative and positive space which was used as a primary design element throughout the entire building.

The objective was to redesign the existing lobby of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, in New York, NY. The existing lobby is located on the south-west end of the building and faces an urban plaza. The goal was to integrate a series of building systems in order to create a meaningful architectural space which successfully addresses the following: • Overall quality of space • Environmental comfort • Building envelope aesthetic • Structural integrity and structural expressionism • Construction details and connections • Natural and artificial lighting • Views to the outside • Functional circulations
