February 1, 2013 Woot, Inc. 333 Boren Ave. N. Seattle, Washington 98119 Dear Human Resources Department: I’m writing to express my interest in the workaholic staff writer position as described on Indeed.com as of February 1, 2013. With my Bachelor of Arts in English Writing and Rhetoric, skills in online and print copywriting and editing, and experience in salescopywriting and online journalism, I feel I’m qualified to join your staff at Woot, Inc. While studying at St. Edward’s University, I’ve learned and executed a variety of writing and editing, including online writing, advertising writing, journalism, and technical writing. I’ve also gained skills and experience in sales-copywriting, HTML and CSS, and writing for social media and the web. The skills and experience I’ve gained have led me to more professional writing and editing opportunities outside of academics. Currently, I am an editor of the university newspaper, Hilltop Views where “ludicrously tight deadlines” is in my daily vocabulary. Getting a 16page newspaper together in a week, every week, while working with a bunch of freelancing college students who, you know, have lives and stuff, is not an easy job. Before working as an editor, I freelanced in the entertainment section. My obsession with pop culture has leaked its way into my profession, and I’ve been known to occasionally drop a few references and weird humor in my writing. I’ve now adopted this conversational tone as my usual style of writing. For nearly a year, I’ve been contributing to the online entertainment and sports magazine, Playmaker Magazine. At Playmaker, I write short, daily entertainment news articles that let me play around with style and tone. Pop culture obsessions and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor are encouraged in the Playmaker gang, so I’ve managed to get some experience of being hilarious under my belt—and I did it for no money, at all. The style of writing and voice of the Woot! website is so much fun to read—and how I always aspire to write. I would love the opportunity to add my own personality, [sometimes ridiculously bad] nerdy jokes, and knowledge of pop culture to, not only the website, but the Woot! staff as well. You’ll find my résumé and a portfolio of some of my writing samples enclosed, along with a link to my professional website with even more samples. If I don’t hear from you soon, I will contact you within two weeks to discuss my application and an interview—but more importantly, to get in on some of those raw and uncensored jokes you guys mentioned. Sincerely,

Nikki Hill
