A PERSONAL NOTE: REFLECTION OF THE YEAR A MESSAGE FROM THE RIORDAN SCHOLARS CLASS PRESIDENT

A MESSAGE FROM A 2014 MBA FELLOW

By Justin Hopkins, Riordan Scholar (’14)

By Ellen Chang , Riordan Fellow (’14) I fortunately have been a Riordan Scholar for the past two years, and I am so incredibly grateful for all that this Program has given me. First, I am thankful that, even though I am only in high school, I have become financially literate with the help of the many amazing teachers involved in the Program. Especially with regard to the stock market and real estate, I believe I have been given a “leg up” on many of my peers because I was taught this invaluable, life-altering information so early on in life. Also, I am so grateful for all of the ways in which the Scholars Program has helped me personally, from teaching me how to network, to helping hone my public speaking skills.

ww

As my Riordan journey is coming to a close, and having been recently accepted to Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, there’s no doubt in my mind that Riordan has helped me become a much more competitive MBA candidate than when I first started the program. Prepping for case studies, listening to lectures about how to create realistic goals and discussing my leadership style with my peer group immediately had me fine-tuning my teaching, goal-setting and supervisory skills at work. I only wish that I had started the journey much earlier in my career! The takeaway for me, however, is the relationships I’ve gained through the program. Collaborating with like-minded, ambitious and inquisitive individuals motivated me to question how I could be a better leader, and how I could plan ahead to set myself up for success. It’s truly uplifting to know that I can reach out to a Fellow about anything — whether brainstorming how to motivate my staff at work or asking about travel recommendations for Spain. And, as graduation is near, I’m happy to have made so many lifelong friends, and am extremely humbled to be a part of the Riordan 2013-2014 journey.

Above all, I am most grateful for the caring staff that runs the Scholars Program and for being given the opportunity to interact with some of the brightest, most driven minds in Los Angeles. Margie, the Program coordinator, puts in so much time and effort to ensure the Program runs smoothly and to ensure that we Scholars benefit from every speaker, teacher, lesson or activity. I will always remember and be thankful for her true desire to see us all thrive beyond the Program for the rest of our lives. As a part of the Program, I feel like I now have a large, extended family of intelligent and ambitious peers who I am excited to see succeed wildly in the future. Thank you to all those involved in making the Scholars Program the success that it is!

EVENTS AND UPDATES March Funness

created by histories of inequality. Although the event celebrated past achievements, the speeches of the honored guests served as a sobering reminder that the true purpose of the 27th Annual Gala was to raise funds to extend the legacy of the Riordan Programs and to lay a foundation for future progress.

Annual Wine Gala Event

THE RIORDAN PROGRAMS ANNUAL WINE GALA EVENT By Lindsay Barbee MBA Fellow (’14)

The Riordan Programs is a multifaceted organization with several working parts all contributing toward a common goal: exposing young people from diverse backgrounds to the upper echelons of education and business. Taking a cue from its parent organization The Riordan Programs, which shares its mission with everyone from the high school-age student to the corporate executive, the MBA Fellows produced a dynamic event that had layers of entertainment for guests of all ages and interests. On the evening of March 8, 2014, more than 300 guests gathered at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles to taste a variety of wines, bid on scores of rare items, view classic cars, dance and support the 27th year of an organization with a noble mission. Behind the scenes, the Fellows worked with numerous sponsors to ensure hors d’oeuvres circulated the venue, wine continued to flow, guests understood the descriptions of the auction items and everyone had a good time. Amidst the libations and the incredible sounds of the musical artists, the gala paused to recognize four individuals with exemplary service to the community. The honorees were: civil rights attorney Thomas Saenz; 1988 Riordan Scholar and cardiologist Dr. Richard Wong; senior public official and 1992 Riordan MBA Fellow Antoinette Chandler; and entrepreneur and 2001 Riordan MBA Fellow Roberto Sequeira. Each honoree spoke on the importance of institutionalized support in education and industry to close access gaps

RIORDAN SCHOLARS “MARCH FUNNESS” By Bianca Calingo MBA Fellow (’14)

Sunshine. Burritos. Tug of War. What more can you ask for? This was the perfect combination for The Riordan Programs’ Fun Day Celebration! On a beautiful March afternoon, the Riordan MBA Fellows hosted the annual Fun Day at Rio de Los Angeles State Park. The mentoring team did a fantastic job planning out the activities for the day, and we had great turnout from the Fellows, the Scholars and their families. Having been a part of the Fundraising and SBI community service project teams, it was great to see the mentoring team in action and meet the amazing Riordan Scholars! The Fun Day kicked off with a delicious lunch provided by various sponsors, followed by a few icebreakers. The Fellows were all decked out in gear from their alma maters, so school spirit was high, and it was a nice way to bond with the Scholars. This definitely encouraged the Scholars to talk to us about our schools and learn more about what we loved about our respective colleges.

Organized into two large groups, we each devised our game plans and got into position. “Ready. Set. Go!” After two rounds, they announced the winner, and I was on the winning team. (But, to be fair, I’ll admit my team had way more people!) In the end, the games gave us an opportunity to test not only our strength and stamina, but also our strategic thinking and communication skills! As Riordan Fellows, we spend all year not only preparing ourselves for grad school, but also making sure the Scholars have the resources they need to succeed. I loved being able to meet these undoubtedly talented Scholars and their parents. The Riordan Programs have had such a positive impact on our lives, and the Fun Day was the best way to celebrate!

THE RIORDAN MBA FELLOWS OPEN HOUSE By Mabel Frias MBA Fellow (’14)

The Riordan Programs at UCLA Anderson School of Management hosted its annual MBA Fellows Open House on Saturday, April 8, 2014. With the aim of providing prospective applicants an overview of The Riordan Programs’ mission, attendees of the Open House walked away with a glimpse into the transformative experience that awaits them once admitted into the MBA Fellows Program. The event commenced with an energetic presentation by Dr. Ray Raymond, CEO and founder of the City Fellowships program, in partnership with Goldman Sachs – London. Raymond honed in on the value and importance of diversity in business and how,

upon completion, the City Fellowship program propels graduates to launch international careers in financial services. The Riordan Programs also hosted a moving fireside chat with keynote speaker Stacey Snider, co-chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios. Interviewed by Riordan Programs board member and Goldman Sachs managing director, Jordan Bender, the chat provided attendees with Snider’s notable career highlights and her reflections on building a career based on hard work and maintaining one’s individuality on the path to success. Rounding out the exciting agenda was an informative exhibitor panel with partner organizations National Society of Hispanic MBAs, The Consortium, Robert Toigo Foundation and Raytheon. The Q&A session introduced prospective students to resources available to competitively apply to a top-tier MBA program and available financing opportunities. The Riordan Programs Open House was well attended by program participants, prospective students, alumni, corporate partners and the UCLA community. The event achieved its goal of providing prospective students with valuable insight into The Riordan Programs and its core purpose of educating, preparing and motivating students interested in business careers. The presentations served as a well-rounded introduction into the variety of learning opportunities and support that prospective MBA Fellows can expect from the transformative nine-month fellowship program that is sure to have a lasting impact on all. Culver City, and we gave away Disneyland

Castle Package, which consists of 4 “Park Hopper Tickets.” It was a great opportunity for alumni and current program participants to network with each other. We were privileged to have two mentors share how they impacted their mentee’s life and upheld the true spirit of the program. We would like to thank our generous sponsors: Subway, Jarritos, Humana, OPI, Disney, Target, Costco, and our own Riordan Fellows.

SHADOW DAY By Shantel Gentle

The Riordan Programs Shadow Day offers high school students from Luskin Academy High School the opportunity to experience the day in the life of a true Bruin by shadowing them. The high school students shadow their Bruin buddy to class, lunch, activities and more to experience the day in the life of a college student. The purpose of the program is to bridge the gap between high school and college and make the students understand what it is like to be in college and what they need to do in high school in order to get to the college of their

choice. The goals of the program are to help students realize that college is not out of their reach, to encourage more students to apply to and attend college, and to give them a fun day on campus experiencing what actual college students do on a daily basis. Shadow Day takes place on UCLA campus every quarter with a new grade level of students from Luskin Academy High School. Last quarter, we were able to get Shadow Day approved as a volunteer opportunity qualifying for MEChA de UCLA Raza Grad community service requirement and placed in the newsletters of the Afrikan Student Union and IDEAS, which allowed us to reach out to more students. realize that college/UCLA is not out of their reach. The goals for the program are to fill the gap between high school and college, encourage more students to apply and attend college, and to enjoy a fun day on campus experiencing the day in the life of a college student. The Shadow Day program takes place on campus in the beginning of every quarter with a different grade level of high school students.

After breaking the ice, we were divided into teams and the games began! From potato sack races to watermelon eating contests, I could feel the competitive energy in the air, and it all led up to the main event…Tug of war! MBA Fellows Open House

>>THE RIORDAN PROGRAMS ALUMNI: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ADAM KHAN Vice President, Social Media Strategy & Analytics MBA Fellow (’06)

>> TELL ME ABOUT WHAT YOU DID AFTER THE FELLOWS PROGRAM AND HOW YOU ARRIVED IN NEW YORK AND BECAME INTERESTED IN CITI?

Following the Riordan Fellows Program, I participated in the MLT Fellows Program (Management Leadership for Tomorrow), which was great at focusing me through the process of applying to business school. Prior to starting business school, the MLT program enabled me with the opportunity to complete a pre-MBA internship in New York, which is how I took the first steps towards the career I have today. >> WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT THE MBA FELLOWS PROGRAM?

What I value most from the Riordan Fellows Program is working on the group service project,

where I was able to develop deeper relationships with my classmates. My team operated like a startup in that we were a small group of passionate individuals who worked day and night to create something that hadn’t been done before (we pioneered a Health Care Fair for the community of Inglewood). Managing the demands of an ambitious project along with my full-time day job was a thrilling experience that bonded me with my teammates and helped prepare me (to some degree) for the grueling life of a business school student.

and a room full of peers along with our family members. Having to work in a group allowed me to form a bond with my team members and learn to trust them. We all learned to work together collaboratively as a unit. The greatest thing I took away from the competition was the ability to learn to work as a team. Learning how to work efficiently with others is a necessity when we get to our Universities and being able to practice now will give us the advantage in the future. I learned how to act as a leader for my group and how to step up my authority when it was needed.

Empowering, inspiring, eye-opening – my participation in the UCLA Riordan Programs since my sophomore year of high school has been crucial to my college development by empowering me with the lifelong skills of mentorship, job development, leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills through the training and mentorship provided by the program. From the Scholars to the College to Career program, I have been connected with like-minded people and motivated college students from across the country interested in pursuing different career paths for the past four years. With the program’s mission to expose and educate the skills necessary to compete in the business world, I have been exposed to lectures by college professors from the MBA school, in-depth investigation of the stock market, and impactful speakers with significant corporate and business backgrounds that have introduced me to the professional world with new aspirations and the experience, confidence,

and drive to excel at Yale University as a first generation U.S. citizen and college student.

>> WHAT DID YOU GAIN FROM THE MBA FELLOWS RIORDAN PROGRAM THAT FOLLOWS YOU IN YOUR POSITION AS V.P. OF SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY AND ANALYTICS?

By stepping out of my comfort zone to do things that were unfamiliar to me and investing in others, not only did the group service project teach me highly relevant lessons in teamwork, leadership and entrepreneurship, it allowed me to build genuine friendships that I’ve continued to reap the benefits of to this day. I can confidently say that taking the time to foster meaningful relationships with others has made all the difference in my career and in my life.

The Stock Market Competition has helped me grow as a person and an intellectual individual. I learned how to analyze stock and act as a stock analyst for the company that we were assigned. Without the program I would have never been able to understand the stock market or learn certain terminology that pertains to the subject. Now, I have learned the gist of what the stock market is. Being able to present in front of a room full of people has helped me with my public speaking skills. Several people our age have never experienced public speaking to the degree that we have. We presented in front of a panel of judges

THE RIORDAN PROGRAMS

Thanks to Riordan, their high school and college programs have changed how I view problems from a business perspective and provided me with the business background to engage at Yale. In the process, I discovered my own voice and the importance of college education as the learning journey through my Riordan experience has ignited a real appreciation for the commitment of teamwork in business. Riordan has both provided me with the tools and knowledge of how to become a stronger leader and better prepared student and has allowed me realize my full potential. I would not be standing here today as a deeper and more changed person with the skills to succeed in college without the Riordan Programs as I look forward to staying in touch with the program.

COLLEGE TO CAREER PROGRAM The College to Career Program targets current college students who are considering a career in management. Its core purpose is to educate, prepare and motivate these individuals to competitively apply to and succeed in summer internships, as well as a postcollegiate career. Exceptional students from all over the state are given the opportunity to participate in a five-day career-based

Anderson in 1992, he learned about The Riordan Programs through a co-worker who had been involved and was immediately hooked. “I always saw balance between those two things – finance and marketing. And, when I teach in the classroom, I always try to bring that perspective,” he says. “The stock market in general is so full of numbers. But what does it all mean?”

Managing director for MezzCap Partners and current stock market expert for the Riordan Programs, Jeff Kabot, has been with the program for more than 20 years and has seen the need for financial literacy. “The Riordan Programs is filling a big hole,” he explains. Now, as opposed to three decades ago, people have more responsibility to make financial choices and decisions that will affect them for the rest of their lives. And, to make these decisions, people need to have the knowledge and tools to make educated decisions that aren’t necessarily taught in the classroom. Jeff Kabot, via programs like the Riordan Programs Stock Market, fills that gap for young students who are on the brink of being financial decision makers. Influenced by his father who was in real estate, Jeff became increasingly interested in finance and economics, which led him to The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained a degree in economics with concentrations in finance and marketing. Jeff was not only interested in numbers, he was curious about the strategic elements that create those numbers – the “why” behind the numbers. That explains the concentration in marketing. After graduating from Wharton, he was involved in a two-year Wall Street analyst-training program. “It’s where it all started,” he says. The apprenticeship was demanding. “They really grind you,” he says. After graduating with his MBA from UCLA

“I think it’s critical that first generation college graduates have a like up when it comes to preparing for their professional careers.”

Jeff explains that giving these tools to students as young as 16 is essential in today’s global economy. “Understanding the basics of the stock market and how and why the stock market values a company places them ahead of the curve,” he said. There it is again – the “why.”

TINA HUSSAIN

Policy Manager Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, MBA Fellow ‘12

“The students recognize the difference between a company’s profitability and its valuation in the stock market,” he says. They are provided the tools to determine whether to buy or sell a company. “They learn that companies may be profitable, but they may be overvalued. The fact that these 16 year olds can recognize and understand this difference is awesome. The Stock Market Analyst competition showcases what they’ve grasped.”

“Riordan C2C opens many doors. By meeting industry professionals you are given the first hand advice about how to break in and they’re candid stories of their own career path. Further being around driven students from all walks of life and from all around the nation provides a strong network. It’s simply a one of a kind experience. “

Students who re-enroll in the program for a second or third year gain a great benefit because they go through the course again and it begins to click. “We give the students a crash course in the stock market, finance and accounting. It’s not easy material and can take a year or two to learn,” he says. “We are constantly reworking our course to focus on the key concepts and what we can do to simplify teaching those key concepts.” Having just finished working with the 2014 Riordan Scholars, Jeff is already focused on planning for the next Scholars class, which starts in the fall of 2014. “These students are really smart, and we have to keep up with them. Whenever I hear someone say that they are worried about the future of L.A., I tell them, ‘Come see what I see at The Riordan Program and you will quickly realize that our future is in good hands.’”

retreat. Speakers from a wide range of industries including public policy, finance, entrepreneurship, media, and higher education offer students the inside scoop on breaking in the industry, what to expect and how to prepare. From orientation on day one to dinner plans on day five, students not only gain career-based tools but also gain a network of lifelong friendships.

“The Riordan College to Career program specifically stood out to me because it’s specifically made for underrepresented students who are interested in business and that is exactly what I am.” RAWAN GALAIDOS
