KALK BAY Kalk Bay is one of Cape Town’s trendiest seaside villages reflecting a vibrant cosmopolitan heritage and a long fishing history. It has one of the oldest traditional working harbours in South Africa and was the only community in South Africa to successfully resist the Separate Group Areas Act in the 1960s and it thus remained a mixed-race community. It’s hard to believe that Kalk Bay is actually part of Cape Town - the pace and the mood differs. There is a relaxed holiday atmosphere and interesting people stroll along the wharf, browse the quirky shops, sip on superb Cape Wines and cold beers while surfers ride the breakers. Kalk Bay is part-sleepy fishing village and part-buzzy high street. The eclectic mix of people, historic buildings, cobbled streets, bohemian bric-a-brac shops, vintage bookstores, art and antique galleries, colourful fishing vessels and excellent restaurants is what makes it so unique and charming. With its bohemian arty vibe, a growing nightlife and great theatre, the art, architecture and cuisine are much sought after. In season the Southern Right Whales grace the shoreline and fishermen ply the waters constantly whatever the time of day or season. Look out for the traditional fishing vessels returning with their catch of the day and join the “fish auction” for your own fish BBQ. Kalk Bay is also home to the tiny but locally famous surf spot named “Kalk Bay Reef”. This is renowned for heavy barrels and the associated shallow reef. Kalk Bay is also a hub of outdoor action – from sea fishing to angling and the fascinating Kalk Bay caves for hiking enthusiasts. You can even take a water taxi to Simons Town.
