OCTOBER 2018

VTS TIMES C H A R T I N G N E W WAT E R S & B E Y O N D !

MESSAGE FROM Anne, Danny, Lotlot, Russell, Aris, Gilles, TJ & Ali

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE RESORT? The SLBO rejuvenation team gets bigger and bigger with the return of some of the VTS crew back to the island and back to the SLBO family! The official countdown has begun last September followed by activities such as a team-building themed TGIF gathering featuring activities that foster teamwork and social media trivia quizzes to refresh everyone’s knowledge about SLBO. The CSR committee continued to celebrate International Coastal Clean-Up Day and invited colleagues to participate in the beach clean-up activity last September. As we gear towards the opening of a revitalized island, colleagues will soon be invited to re-affirm their commitment to the environment by writing their pledges on how they can help as we journey towards a single-use plastic free environment. “Our daily impact and footprints are no joke and the environment is too exhausted from human impact, particularly from the surge of plastic waste. So I’m feeling very happy to see that individuals now are starting to realize this and are starting to reflect and most importantly, take action. This is a great way for all of us to be involved in caring for the renewed Boracay.” Crisanta Danan shares.

The countdown is officially on, explorers! We are 25 days away from our much awaited island re-opening and we will be opening our doors to our guests once again after several months. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for everyone’s unwavering support as we courageously course through all the challenges brought about by the closure. These challenges have become opportunities for all of us to grow and develop not only our resort and products but most importantly ourselves. For the SLBO Rejuvenation team both in the island and in Manila, thank you for being stewards to our beautiful SLBO during the closure. Our preparation works are about to unfold new experiences for our future guests and employees alike. To the Philippine & International VTS crew, we can’t wait to welcome everyone back and hear more about your experiences during your deployment. Likewise, we can’t wait to see your new and valuable skills into play when we re-open. As our CEO has mentioned last April, this is a partnership between the company and ewveryone and we’re very pleased that this journey has resulted into a fruitful one. Let’s take the remaining weeks to work together as a team to polish all of our developments, train and learn as one SLBO team. Best of luck to all of us and let’s get ready for the much awaited October 26, 2018! Best wishes Anne, Danny, Lotlot, Russell, Aris, Gilles, TJ & Ali

THE VTS EXPERIENCE Our Philippine and International VTS crews bid farewell to their respective teams in our sister properties here and abroad as their secondment experience comes to an end. Members of the VTS crew have expressed their gratitude and excitement to come back to Boracay to share stories about valuable learnings and personal accomplishments with working with different ShangriLa properties. “Working with the Shangri-La Brand has been one of the most rewarding things that I have achieved. It’s not just about the prestige rather the culture and experiences it taught me. An environment that fosters career growth making one highly competent in the field of the hospitality industry.” Events Manager Vina Ho shares. “Coming back to Boracay has not only built my connections but has also equipped me with more knowledge and experience. I look forward to sharing these with my SLBO colleagues and ignite their passion for learning as we restart our journey as one team.” She added. For restaurant manager, Dianne Villota, her experience at SLFM has given her the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be immersed in an entirely different environment that elevated her knowledge about the latest F&B trends and best practices in the industry. Same with ADOFB Joel Ng, his experience at SLM has gained him a treasure of knowledge on how we can further enhance processes at SLBO in order to utilize customer feedback to deliver the best dining service possible. With the exposure of our VTS colleagues internationally, their learnings go beyond dealing with new hotel procedures and dealing with new guests and colleagues. They immersed in local culture and traditions, explored the destination, learned about the way of life overseas and most especially, develop patience, flexibility and other important values that would be beneficial to their growth in the hospitality industry. Being the language barrier as one of the most challenging factor of their assignment, some of our VTS crew have successfully learned how to communicate with the locals by learning their language and teach them in return to ensure that their team deliver the best service possible. The genuineness of our SLBO colleagues to patrons and peers are not unnoticed by our sister properties and this makes the whole journey fulfilling. “I can always feel the concern, care and hospitality of our managers here at SLHN because they always thank us for delighting guests. They know they can always count on us because we treat their guests as our own during our time there.” Shares Cecilia Gatenby of CHI Spa in SLHN. The VTS experience with our fellow Shangri-La hotels might have ended, but this is just the start of a new and exciting journey ahead for the whole SLBO team in Boracay.

SLBO REJUVENATION TEAM AFTER ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BEACH CLEAN-UP

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE RESORT? The rejuvenation crew continues to care for our beautiful SLBO through engaging beach and public area clean-ups with every single team member helping. Engineering continue to be working very hard on the maintenance of rooms and villas, as well as our staff house in Kamalig. In addition, the team started its focus on caring for the marine life in Punta Bunga and Banyugan beaches through water activities such as reef checks, underwater clean-ups, coral propagation, giant clam monitoring and the collection of Crown of Thorns starfish that have been found in the waters of Boracay. Moreover, the team is set to welcome everyone with a new Herb Garden layout, with a designated plantation area assigned to each restaurant and to enhance future guest tour experiences.

MESSAGE FROM DANNY Welcome to our second edition of VTS Times! Thank you all so much for the patience and cooperation that you have extended to the HR team since day one of the closure. I am very proud that all of us have been braving these changes so well as nearly all the VTS crews are in place now both locally and abroad.

TIP #1 Be mindful of your words and actions as different people and cultures may not view actions and words the same as you do. TIP #2 Relate to each person as an individual not as a stereotype. Take the time to learn about local or workplace cultures and beliefs that may help you adapt accordingly.

The Philippine VTS Crew has not only grown in number, but in experiences as well. Our sister properties ensured that our colleagues are well-equipped to face new challenges with group orientations and trainings. They continue to immerse themselves through different tasks such as spearheading big events, sharing their expertise and best practices from SLBO to their respective departments. It continues to be a wonderful experience for all as they learn new cuisines, work in a faster paced environment, encounter different sets of guests and reconnect with loyal SLBO patrons. “I was able to introduce Mr. & Mrs. Woda, our regular guest in SLBO, to the service team here at HEAT to ensure that our team is familiar and will be able to take care of them at Edsa Shangri-La.” SLBO SM-F&B Richard Satorre shares. Many have expressed that they have also been learning and acquiring best practices from their current departments, which they look forward to sharing with the SLBO team when we re-open.

INTERNATIONAL VTS CREW The SLBO VTS International Crew has gotten bigger with new deployments in different Shangri-La, Kerry Hotel and Hotel Jen properties in China, Middle East and South East Asia. Our fellow colleagues from Front Office, F&B, Kitchen, Housekeeping and Sports & Recreation have shared fruitful experiences and challenges they encountered along the way, such as communication barriers, adapting to local cultures, getting accustomed to new flavors and so much more. In spite of these, all are made easier with the help of their new friendly colleagues and of course—our kababayans! “I was so happy to meet our fellow Filipinos here at Kerry Hotel in Pudong, especially in the outlet that I am assigned to. They always have my back both during operations and even off duty.” says Vincent Cacatian from F&B service.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE RESORT? As the SLBO Rejuvenation Crew commits to keeping our beautiful resort at its best, they also volunteered to spend time with students of Yapak Elementary school to celebrate Nutrition Month last July. The SLBO volunteers took part in the feeding program by preparing and giving healthy snacks to the children, and educating them about the importance of nutritious food and proper eating habits. After which, the students got to take home a goody bag filled with fruits, juices and educational toys which they could take home and share with their families. On the other hand, the team focused on continuous cleaning, repair and maintenance of our public areas, guest room corridors, beaches, kitchens and villas. As well as the development of our revamped Herb Garden and CHI Spa Healing Garden. “Seeing how our Rejuvenation team work together, and some work on tasks they’ve never done before is exceptional. The tasks may be different from our usual work but the fact that we all have the willingness to learn and execute the job well is outstanding. I’m so proud of all the hard work we’ve done!” CSR Champion, Crisanta Danan shares.

MESSAGE FROM RUSSELL Welcome to the third issue of our VTS Times. As you all know we are midway through the closure and I’m really proud that the SLBO team has achieved so much, irrelevant of location. Regardless of where we all are right now, we all supported each other in more ways than one. The camaraderie you’ve shown as one team really makes a big difference as we go through this journey. The SLBO Rejuvenation Crew continues to work really hard to take care of SLBO for our reopening. It’s so great to see that we are all learning so many different skills from such a wide range of departments including housekeeping, engineering and landscaping. For the VTS crew, I am sure that some days may be challenging for each one of you for different reasons, but keep in mind that these are all learning experiences that will make everyone stronger in the long run. Really looking forward to welcoming each one of you back to SLBO when we reopen!

A GLIMPSE OF BORACAY As the island rests, the shores and turquoise waters of Boracay are becoming even more beautiful. The famed destination is now starting to reap the fruits of the rehabilitation efforts as it unveils a more beautiful and serene environment-- just like how it was back in the days. From the enhancements being worked on by the local government up to the volunteerism of the community, the island is well under way to its re-opening this coming October. Developments to look forward to include a healthier marine life, cleaner beaches and more importantly, the sense of social responsibility among the community to continuously preserve the island. Amid the six-month break, the undeniable beauty of the island still captured the interest of many as Boracay still rank as one of the top tourist destinations in Asia based on the 2018 Travel + Leisure reader’s choice awards. PHILIPPINE VTS CREW The PH VTS crew continue to grow and develop from their secondments. All have been learning, adapting and most importantly contributing to the success of our sister properties in the Philippines. “I was able to contribute strategies in the promotion of ESL’s kids club! It’s challenging but it also teaches you how to be resourceful in the job to deliver great results.” shares Niecy Raval of Sports & Recreations. Another notable achievement was by SLBO Front Office’s very own Ana Kathrina Velasco who was included in SLM’s Up-seller team of the month by exceeding the target. For Chef Helen Mueller, her experience at SLFM taught her to be an example to her new colleagues by being a helpful team player. She also shares a piece of advice for everyone, “Value your work, help others and continue learning. Good employees learn and grow over time.” Way to go PH VTS Crew!

MESSAGE FROM ARIS

Greetings from Manila Sales Office!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE RESORT? The SLBO Rejuvenation team is set to accomplish majority of the repairs and maintenance, deep cleaning, beach clean-ups and various enhancement projects within the month. Development of some new service standards are also in the works to ensure that our guests will have new experiences to remember when they stay with SLBO once again. The countdown towards the restart of our VTS journey on October 26 started already and different activities are being lined up to excite everyone-- especially our colleagues who will be coming back to the resort from their VTS deployment. “I look forward to meeting the rest of the SLBO team to share my experiences during closure, and to implement all the great ideas we have and most especially, I look forward to making more revenue when we open on October!” Villa Manager, Rachelle Anne Piguing shares.

We are just two months away from the much-awaited reopening of a renewed Boracay. This is the time when each and every one of us will hit the ground running to prepare for the arrival of our first guests in October. It is a delight to know that everyone at the resort has been working very hard to ensure that our beautiful resort is at it best condition, and everyone on the VTS deployment is expanding their skills and experiences here and abroad. For the Sales & Marketing team, we are excited to share that our team has been successfully reaching out to our loyal affiliates through sales calls, and meeting with our clients especially those who are holding events with us soon. Our marketing campaigns are well under way to promote the brand, our upcoming offers, and re-affirm our position as Boracay’s leader in sustainability. It is undeniable that all of our worthwhile efforts will bear fruit very soon. Until then, let’s continue to work together as a team to achieve our goals. Take care everyone!

SLBO GRAPHIC ARTIST ALDRIN BARRIDO WITH HIS DESIGN AT SLFM’S RAGING BULL BURGERS

SLBO VTS TEAM AT SLM CELEBRATES WITH AN APPRECIATION DINNER ORGANIZED BY SLM HR

PHILIPPINE VTS CREW It’s been a fulfilling journey for our VTS crew whose hard work is constantly recognized by fellow colleagues and management teams of our sister properties. Last August, the SLM VTS team gathered for a dinner with the SLM’s ExCom as a way of showing appreciation to the SLBO team for a job well done. Organized by the SLM HR, they were joined by Hotel Manager, Mr. Udo Wittich and DOHR, Ms. Sheila Sepulveda among others wherein they shared their experiences with each other. Meanwhile for SLBO’s Graphic Artist Supervisor, Aldrin Barrido, seeing his design displayed on SLFM’s Raging Bull restaurant entrance made his secondment experience fruitful. “My design was inspired by the restaurant’s personality, in this case, I’ve created a rock star vintage design to promote Raging Bull!” Aldrin shares. “Learning knows no age! I’m so excited to share my learnings with the SLBO team and adapt more modern designs into our future campaigns.”

INTERNATIONAL VTS CREW It’s been months since our VTS crew started charting new waters overseas doing what they do best in their respective fields. But for our fellow colleague, Diane Labrador, her deployment in China as a first-time waitress and a Breakfast Ambassador for their all-day dining café led her to experience a unique stint at SLNB. “Being new to the job as a waitress is not always as easy as it seems but it’s rewarding in a lot of different ways. At the end of the day, what matters most is making sure that every guest has the best experience and you get that sense of satisfaction when they leave happy.” Diane shared. This once in a lifetime opportunity brought her to a new journey in the F&B division that may even continue when she gets back to Boracay. Moreover, ExCom members visited the VTS crew in Hong Kong last August wherein they got together with some of our colleagues for a catch-up with the team

MESSAGE FROM ANNE

BEACH CLEAN UP

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE RESORT? The SLBO Rejuvenation Crew of around 150 colleagues from different departments, are working together to ensure that the resort is well taken care of during Boracay’s closure. Decked in VTS shirts, the team starts their daily routine with a group exercise, followed by a morning briefing before they set off for another productive and fun day ahead! The team is focused on improvement and maintenance works of rooms, villas, beachfronts, pools and other public areas. Other priorities include deep cleaning, inventory of assets, but most importantly safety trainings and CSR activities to make sure that we continue to take care of the environment. The island may be closed, but this bunch definitely knows how to bring the fun everyday— they are becoming talented dancers with morning warm ups!

Welcome to our very first issue of VTS Times! As we are spread out in different hotels, I thought that this would help us to stay in touch as one team. It has been a little over a month since Boracay closed down for 6 months for the government’s rehabilitation program. From the moment the official announcement was made in April until now, I am extremely grateful to you all for your wonderful support and complete commitment. As I mentioned in our SORA last April 26 we are one team as we embark on this new VTS journey—may it be in Boracay or our sister properties in Manila, Cebu or abroad. To the SLBO Rejuvenation team both in Boracay and Manila, thank you very much for being the carers of our beautiful SLBO. Everyone has been doing a wonderful job, and the teamwork you’ve shown truly amazed me.

As I’ve said before, I encourage everyone to fully embrace these new experiences with great positivity and enthusiasm. In the next few months, we will all be in different places but I know that this will only make the whole SLBO team stronger and better than ever. Lastly, should you need anything - the management teams, together with the VTS team leaders, are within reach to support you in any way possible. Take care everyone and enjoy charting these New Waters on the SLBO’s Voyage to Success!

One of the greatest things that he experienced was meeting the staff who used to work at SLBO or in Manila, and hearing good things from them as they would love to go back and thank everyone who taught them to be great hoteliers. It continues to be a really great learning and development experience, not only for Mark, but for the rest of the International VTS Crew as they travel overseas to face their exciting times ahead.
