Eberhard Ross 1959
EBERHARD ROSS has studied the philosophy of Zen Buddhism for many years and this is revealed in his art both in the subject matter and in its execution. In his more abstract works he painstakingly covers canvases with networks of lines and pattern that develop organically in a repetitive and meditative process. Increasingly taking inspiration from natural phenomena and scientific data he captures the wonder of apparently random formations. He is fascinated by patterns; the spiral forms of snail shells, leaves and bark, butterfly wings, fingerprints, and ripples on the surface of water. For his “Flight series he has taken film footage of the gathering of thousands of starlings as they fly across Northern Germany. The resulting paintings are literally a snapshot of a moment in their flight path revealing the dynamic relationship between a group of birds at one moment.
