Jerry Schatzberg 1927
JERRY SCHATZBERG was born In the Bronx, New York in 1927. He attended the University of Miami. He started his career as a freelance fashion photographer as assistant to Bill Helburn (1954-1956). He was published in magazines such as Vogue, McCalls, Esquire, Glamour, Town and Country, and Life in the 1960’s. His debut as a film director began in 1970 with “Puzzle of a Downfall Child”. Starring Faye Dunaway, the film centers on the world he knew best, fashion photography, and the woman who was closest to him. With it’s fractured narrative, complex sound-track and unconventional shots, the film reflected his daring, Manhattan-based, international style. He scored with his the gripping “The Panic in Needle Park”(1971), a bleak study of heroin addiction starring Al Pacino. Pacino costarred with Gene Hackman in his next film, “Scarecrow” (1973) which won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Schatzberg’s photography and cinematic world share a continuity. His work shows a sensitivity to vulnerable characters. It was his portrait photography that taught him how to deal with actors. He engaged openly with people to get beyond the surface, to see and capture thoughtful and emotional gestures. His great portraits of the sixties.. Bob Dylan, Francis Coppola, Andy Warhol, Arlo Guthrie, Roman Polanski, Fidel Castro, Milos Forman, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Rolling Stones and many more.. reveal many strikingly candid moments. In more than forty years of photography and cinema, Schatzberg has achieved a delicate balance between classic mise-en-scene and spontaneity, tension-building and release. He has a particular gift of avoiding the obvious through the fine art of suggestion.
