Spring 2018
The aim of the project is to provide the city a Museum that reveals the triple historical stratigraphy of Lavrio and a network of a Cultural Center that unfolds around a double-tiered urban square. The Museum is trying to bridge over the distinct historical periods of Lavrio, including the archaic times, the industrial era and nowdays. The main idea of the project is its vertical section that connect the separate levels, along with the spiral movement that starts with the entrance to the museum, reaches up high to the tower and ends at the central square.

The project aims to bring Piraeiki back to the sea. The project is driven by the idea of a fluid that flows from the city to the sea. That flux became more powerfull on the streets leading to the sea. Its strength here is such as to break the limit of the wall, and lengthen the road to the sea. This gesture is physically translated into straight paths that reach the warter, created with sculptural and red metallic walls. They scratch the ground and grab the sea. To these are added two horizontal paths, one at street level, like a sort of sidewalk interspersed with descending stairs, and one on the rocks.

This project is located on the Olympic Village, a vast area created with aim to host the olympic athletes of 2004 and afterwards, provide shelter for eligible minorities with financial criteria. The purpose of the project is dual. On the macroscale, the village was perceived as a undivided organism. The proposal aims to create a center in the village that was absent before, while fixing the circulational issues of the grid and creating green spaces and multi-identity centers of urban life. On the micro-scale, 3 different sizes of houses, composed in 3 different types of Blocks are developped, enhancing the intimacy between the residents and their relationship with the city.

They work as interdipendent unities but they are also autonomous: each unity contains multiple functions, such as residency, work spaces and leisure halls, covering for the social and cultural needs of their residents. These complexes induce a variety and richeness public and semi-public spaces that create a dynamic and vigorous living.

This is an example of a built Utopia! We can aknowledge a rupture of historical, cultural or political continuity in this party-wall
ABSTRACT The perception of the city through the times, reveals all the cultural, civil and political characteristics that govern the societies and demonstrate modern culture. Utopian thinking, from the Renaissance and onwards, seeks to delineate the ideal features that should reshape social correlations, reconstructing Topos ethically and spatially. Designed architectural Utopias pursue this avant-garde, revealing in space and site - often urban -, this new social condition. A Principal statement of this thesis is that the social visualisation that delineates the Zeitgeist of the times, is constructed out of a triptych of the Real, the Imaginary and the Symbolic order; a theory of psychoanalysis formulated by Jacques Lacaan, in 1973. Therefore, the visionary constructions, especially those of the utopian cities, utilise elements of the respective Symbolic Order, either to persuade, using familiar forms, or to alter the imaginary, engraving a rupture with the established order. Thus, in the first part of this research, I will attempt to explain the way the Symbolic social Construction possesses topological transcripts: it transfuses political meanings to the space that shape the social perception, thus the public space.
the Imaginary (I)
the Synthome (S)
Subsequently, we will examine the locus and the city, as a supreme field for the visionary projections of the society. The urban sphere conden es all those social correlations that identify the society and its politics, but also includes the spatial and structural matter that environ them. Architecture, therefore, forms the city, Utopia forms the vision and idea of it. Last, but not least, this research contains an analysis of utopian city designs, from the age of the Renaissance to Post-Modernism, which reveal this relationship between the city, the Topos, and the Utopia, aiming to understand not only the urban evolution, but how architecture and urban planning attempted to answer the philosophical and ethical question of living at the most complex social structure, the city.
the Symbolic (S)
the Real (R)
We perceive the world according to the Borromean knot of Jacques Lacan. Three interlocking rings -the registers of the Symbolic, Imaginary and Real-constitute our mental integrity, bearing our ideological, cultural and Political characteristics. Utopias strike the regimal status by reversing the Symbolic Order.
“Anywise, the city itself possesses cues of Utopia [...]” - Le Corbusier, Urbanisme, 1925
A. RESEARCH OBJECT
D. METHODOLOGY
This lecture focuses on Utopia in Architecture, as a request for change and redefinition of modern life and habitation. It poses two questions:
This endeavor required, on the one hand, understanding how social vision is constructed and projected onto a Place, common and lived, one like the city. On the other hand, it explored how this vision transforms into an architectural proposals for the space of the City and Utopia: Urban designs that shape the aforementioned relationships, social and class, but deeply of cultural-civilizational and political nature. These are efforts that attempt to address the urban problem spatially and symbolically and sometimes ethically. Indeed, at certain periods, utopias represent the primary manifestation of contemporary Political Zeitgeist.
a. How is the vision of a new city constructed, and b. How does social vision and the Symbolic Order get spatially transcribed into public urban space and Architecture, through utopian city planning.”
B. RESEARCH MOTIVΕ We stayed in our homes, or better yet, within a room, for a long time. The pandemic undeniably left a profound and tangible imprint on all aspects of social life worldwide. It created new conditions in the city and public space; realms inherently mediating social relations and human activities; the urban and metropolitan centers of the world were temporarily deserted. The pandemic questioned, in a ... rather novel way, the culture humans have constructed, the urban spatial structure, and the social and political life within it. Consequently, this leads to inquiries about the evolution of cities and ultimately, the role of architectural thought and design. The motivation, therefore, stemmed from a deeper and broader need to answer the question: ‘how do I re-inhabit the world, and how does architecture transform this need into an idea, design, and ultimately, a Place?
C. PURPOSE This lecture aims for understanding and change. It is an effort to demonstrate that the architectural formation of a building, even more so of the city and its vision, is not an element of positive or technological suitability, nor a product of material-technological organization, nor some peculiar self-expression. Ultimately, it represents a complex expression of interrelated factors (social, political, economic, cultural), often of conflicting nature, as the city is not merely its built entity but a set of relationships that define urbanity. These relationships are fundamentally expressions of social, political, and cultural symbolism. The analysis of architectural Utopias leads to another position, one that suggests that Utopia, whether it’s the small utopia of urban scale or the grand Utopia of planned cities, has a Place, that of Architectural Thought and Design.
To demonstrate this, we proceed through three distinct stages: (a) Symbolic Order, as an expression of the prevailing ideology at any given time, shapes Architecture, the City, and the Landscape. [Chapter 1] (b) Topos and the city serve as highly visual mediums, and hence, the architectural Utopia of cities projects its vision onto them. [Chapter 2] (c) The analysis of urban planning designs for the City and Utopia demonstrates these relationships and qualities, and architectural design, along with these plans, aims to change the Symbolic, through the spatial reconstruction of the world and the way it employs the Symbolic Order. Modern cities raise requests for a vivid and active life in public places; on roads, in open squares and vivacious green enclaves. They claim rights on free expression and strive for socio-political fermentation, on grounds that introduce the sense of belonging and co-shaping. This diploma thesis discusses how Architecture and Loci can emancipate our empirical experience in metropolises, shape opinion and reflection on modern societies, through Matter, Art and Education, but also teach that inhabiting the city or nature, apart from being civil and cultural, is common and Political. The strategic selection of a site that constitutes a hybrid field of an urban and natural environment and that stimulates the interaction and convergence of the elements above, will enable the expatiation of the theoretical inquiries in space and place.

In parallel, a unforeseen spacial potential emerges, since the destruction of the stadium liberates the folding topography that lays on the foothills of Lycabettus hill. The existing urban environment attempts to control the dispersion of the coarse grounds while this natural force casts doubt upon the reign of the 21th century anthropogenic urban environment. This is a consolidation of Human and Natural creation. This diploma thesis attemps to bring these two forces into a dialectical correlation, through a transitioning fluid cultural landscape. The design concept is based on a unified bioclimatic canopy – a “filter” that mediates between the natural environment of the hill and the urban fabric of the city. It is influenced by the character of each area and creates a microclimate within. To ensure flexibility and cost-effectiveness in construction, this system is based on architectural tools like the grid, the repeatability of its structural elements, and the simplification of materials. The 3-meter spatial grid serves on multiple levels. On one hand, it supports the metallic canopy and all the enclosed spaces below, offering great adaptability in construction and their restructuring. More specifically, these spaces are grouped and isolated as separate systems, which, following the rules of hemp, unify internally and adjust in size according to community needs. On the other hand, it allows for the adaptation of external flows to the construction’s form, integrating natural and urban movements from various directions. This spatial grid enables the addition or removal of any construction, standard or with specific specifications, integrating it as part of the system, offering thus multiple benefits to the community. The canopy is designed as a grid of closed-section steel beams, behaving as a single entity, releasing the carrier and allowing its unconventional support. The dimensions of the canopy sections are set at 30x60 cm, where constructions can be attached and suspended. In other worlds, pillars bear the canopy, which respectively holds the alleged constructions. The bioclimatic facades, along with the canopy, regulate the temperature in internal and semi-open intermediate spaces, creating a microclimate pleasant for humans, allowing users to inhabit and arrogate the space. They are categorized into two types, high and low transparency, depending on their orientation, use, and the degree of privacy they enclose.
The philosophy of the overall design and the idea of a flexible and open system are ultimately realized through the construction itself.

Occasioned by the installation of the new metro station and located on the crossroad of Lycabettus and Ardittos hills and among other eminent buildings of civic importance in the center of town, the square of Kolonaki is being regenerated. This proposal attemps first and foremost to maintain the innate urban character of this prominent athenian square while, on the other hand, suggests a two-leveled space which operates in multiple ways. Social and environmental sustainability, in accordance with architectural verity and a broader urban planning, are some of the principles that molded the concept of this design.

The Avenue of Alexandra in Athens, part of the large urban triangle, undergoes transformation with the expansion of metro stations. The proposal envisions an urban island hosting the metro, becoming a model for sustainable design. The plan incorporates environmental, energy, and bioclimatic principles, emphasizing open spaces, sociability, and greenery. The urban island’s role is to connect local and supralocal elements, balancing city scale with neighborhood integration. The proposal integrates green networks, public transportation, and cycling, emphasizing environmental cooperation. A unique aspect is the bioclimatic canopy, offering shadow as well as serving as a guiding urban tool for energy efficiency. Materiality and landscaping prioritize breathability, water absorption, and biodiversity. The proposal seeks to redefine the city positively through functional modernization and revitalization stimuli, emphasizing the intricate relationship between residents and public spaces.

The proposal chose an open building formation as a composition of building volumes (about 18.500m2), under a bioclimatic canopy, which intermediates between the natural environment of the hill, the urban fabric and is also influenced by the “industrial” characteristics of the facilities of EYDAP - the national water company of Greece. The new building was formed with a logic of a spatial succession of open and closed spaces and the alternation of bright and shadowy areas, which allow the environment to enter, as natural light and as a visual resource. The design philosophy of the office spaces embraces the modern perception that considers that workplaces do not simply “enclose” human activities but aim to create a multifaceted work “ecosystem”, enriched with alternative uses and images.
ENVIRONMENTAL - BIOCLIMATIC - URBAN DESIGN
An extensive environmental design (green-scape, ground-scape and water-scape) preceded the integration of the new building. A large masterplan was formulated to separate the 3 planned zones and their entrances with the aim of connectivity with the city, the restoration of the ground relief and the utilization of natural resources.

SUBJECT: Urban Project - Construction TYPE:
Student’s Arch. Competition
CO-LAB: Group Work DATE:
May 2017
Inspired from the waves of the sea and the strong winds of the area, this project is located on the coastal architectural redevelopment in the city of Thessaloniki. This contruction aims not only to embrace the linear and fast movement alongside the coast, but also to deviate this flow, by creating two facing cavities that function as an informative stop. The first cavity, where someone stands and sees the city, contains informations about the ephemeral events of the city, such as concerts, partys etc.. The second cavity hosts informations concerning the history and the design of the coast of Thessaloniki, as well as maps for the city. Consequently, while reading, someone can see through the grid of the construction, the view of the content reached. At night, the coastal pavilion turns into an enlighted urban scultpure.
The model
C l o c k w i se - A PLAY W ITH TH E DAYLIGH T This particular form tries to create a moving trace with the sunlight. In the morning and during the day, every edge of the sculpture points out the orbit of the sun, in an attempt to give the perception of time and space to the stroller. It is a time-space machine.

SUBJECT: Project TYPE:
International Arch. Competition & Realization of the Project
CO-LAB: Interdisciplinary Group Work DATE:
Fall 2017 - 2021
The museum is sited in Nicosia, close to the medieval city walls, in an intermediate space between the green and urban zones of the city, thus enabling the proposal, through a broad urban and environmental design to function in a unifying way and contribute decisively to the re-structuring and upgrading of the urban environment. The intention for highlighting the archeological finds from excavation and the past to the light and the present time, led to the emergence of the museum from the ground. This resulted in a new spatial stratigraphy, composed by three horizontal zones. The upper zone with the hovering body of the museum The Memory layer. The intermediate zone that welcomes the city - The City Layer.
In-between the Volumes
Bird’s eye
The three raised volumes follow the long sight-lines of the environment and are moulded in such a way as to adapt to the triangular plot and adjacent areas. The raised museum becomes a bridge that allows the city to pass through, and the elaboration of ground level shapes the extended public space of the building with dif-ferent qualities. The public square, the entrance area, the atrium, the yards, the platform for outdoor exhibitions, the educational garden, and the river park, create spaces that can host everyday life and multiple activities.
