Description

The design addresses complex architectural problems in large non-urban and natural sites with topographic variation. Also, it include a variety of building types with complex functional programs and structural systems. In addition to performing in-depth analysis of the natural site and functional needs, develop building programs as a way of understanding the relationship between analysis, synthesis and communication throughout the design process. Application of LEED design guidelines to the project. Focuses on building systems analysis and integration. It involves adaptive reuse of existing structures and work with a real client to develop a program of moderate complexity that responds to project objectives and exceeds the client needs.

Concept/ Program

The building is located in Bucombe County, right at the heart of Ashville’s Art District in North Carolina. The project aims to appeal to the community by way of giving the district a new identity; one that combines the old with the new both in its formal elements and in its functionality. The project’s goal is best described through its name, “Misceo Miscui Mixtum,” latin words for mix, mingle, and blend. As such, the building’s elongated geometry, based on two main axis (diagonal and radial) subtly integrates new structures and brings to life the old ones; hence, mixing epochs and styles. This relatively simple exterior contrasts with the interior spaces. Its complex spatial organization combines residential, educational, and cultural spaces as well as areas for leisure time; thus, blending the project with its site, imitating the topography. Finally, through blending structures and mixing spaces, the project suggests an ideal place for people to mingle by interacting with the spaces and with the site as a new entity. 13

Jacksonville

Description

The design con centrates on the issues raised by creating new architecture in existing high density urban contexts with complex social and cultural characters. It focuses on creating well-developed and meaningfull solutions to complex architectural problems in the urban environment. Also focused on how to design buildings with vertical circulation systems and issues related with multi-story buildings.

Concept

Jacksonville is a cold, static and gray city. Its surroundings are tiresome and monotonous. It is a city that craves for dynamism, a spark of life. The goal of this project was to emulate the female body and its movement, embodying delicacy, elegance and sensuality. In contrast to the roughness and crudeness that historically has been associated to men, this triad is attributed to feminity and aim to be represented in the building's aesthetic as well as in its functionality.

Program

Programs are divided in two different portions of the building. The first four stories are dedicated to the public proposing a lot of activities in order to make the space usefull and interactive. The upper levels are dedicated to housing.

Sun Path

Aside from the built environment, scale and character of Jacksonville are also defined by the region's existing landscape In the urban core, trees contribute to the District's overall identity. Trees are identified in neighborhood, along street edges, and parks, contributing to: -A pedestrian friendly environment -Powerful sense of place through their aesthetic -Shade -Protection from downpours -Traffic calming -Mature canopy provides a sense of history, permanence, and stability Trees are also part of a green in-frastructure, contributing to a healthy exosystem by improving: -Air equality -Stormwater run-off -Supporting wildlife -Overall district temperature, shading areas such as paving and rooftops, that would otherwise absorb heat, a phenomenon known as «heat-island effect», which can raise the tempera-ture of the surroundings by as much as ten degrees Trees have been documented to increase property values. They beco-me a vital component to the district’s sense of place and environmental health

PHENO-Type

The composite of an organism's observable characteristics or traits, such as its morphology, development, biochemical or physiological properties, phenology behavior and product of behavior.

Biomimicry Inspired by the biological research of nature's performative characteristics, and the implementation of these systems in everyday life through "Biomimicry". A study was made in order to determine new ways of making the building perform in a better way. These performative characteristics also shape the building by creating performative skins that help it with water and sun colletion, but they also create different surface effects in the building's skin and ornamentation. The following systems are inpired by the Thorny Devil's water colletion skin and the Iguanas solar collection skin. 41

Group Project made by: Nicole Bolliger Ana Jose Monserrat Navas My contribution to the design was to cretate all the performative details of the building and also the creation of the color. In addition, I made the detail section and building sections. As a group we made all the decisions in terms of design, concept, strategies, among others.

The Design concentrates on the ways in which a building's site and environmental context influence architecture. With a simple site analyses to make decisions on that basis. The ability to create meaningful design solutions and fulfill simple programmatic requirements is also emphasized. The concept comes from the typical Costa Rican phrase Pura Vida, meaning pure life in English. From this phrase I have focused on the word life, which from a philosophical perspective means: "An imminent natural activity of self-perfection " related to the well-being of each person to reach the perfection that is also equal to "purity". Life means movement, evolution, and action to me. Therefore, I want the experience to be capable of encouraging users to have connection / interaction among them, and at the same time, between spaces and nature. Instead of creating an introvert space I want to create an extrovert one where people can also reach inner well-being through communication, interaction, dialogue, receptive listening, collaboration, etc. The building is composed of four volumes separated by terraces to create dynamism and variety in terms of heights and volumes. These sections are visually connected through a series of terraces that interconnect all available spaces where different activities will take place. The building also encourages interaction between users and provides for specific meeting points. 1) The assigment was to make an intervention on a 100x100' with a 40' high. The given land is the forested propoerty in a North Eastern industrial Town. We had to use the land to create a statement on the Land Art. The challenge was to preconceived notions of "Landscape". For this project my intervention was to integrate the river to the land (as a channel) and shape the field with waves in order to break with the rigidity of the square and keep movement as it is an industrial town. My intention was to create a space full of colorful flowers as a "picturesque garden" because I imagine an industrial town a depressing, gray, smoke space.. 2) The assigment was to use Roma Plastillina and make a bah relief modeling to study topographic spatial relations associated a given emotive response.

Watercolor My approach on the watercolor, was to represent different seasons summer, fall, winter and spring. This can be appreciated in the use of different colors always keeping the horizon as it is defined as the line between the sky and and earth. Viewed from any angle this line always appears to the eye of the viewer. It is also the reference for interpreting the third dimension or space and allows you to estimate the distance between the foreground and background. For the sections I wanted to interpret the urban and rural areas always maintaining a mountainous landscape as it reminds me of my home country (Venezuela). Also representing several features that a landscape has such as rivers, ponds, lakes, plains, mountains, cities, etc.

Description

The studio focused on solving simple architectural design problems and concentrated on the ways in which basic human factors affect and transform architectural design.

Concept

My inspiration was Savannah, GA because of its squared urbanism and also the proximity of the River got me to think on Palaphites that some Native built on the water. I wanted it to be a relaxing place based on simplicity in order to not break with the historic charm of Savannah. I also tried to make the design environmental friendly using regional materials and also sustainable features. Moreover, the design was based on the connection of the inside and the outside and the way I approach this was elevating the foundation, making a central social space, also the wood structural system is visible (outside and inside). In addition the building is divided in sections with exterior walking through pathways that allow people to enjoy the view while discovering different spaces. Light is an important feature in my design. It is not only illuminating the spaces but also serves as a decorative feature with an extraordinary sensation.
