Civic Cinema: American Experience: The Orphan Trains (NR 1995 60min) In the 1850s, thousands of homeless children roamed New York City streets in search of food and shelter. Moved by their suffering, a young minister named Charles Loring Brace founded the Children’s Aid Society. Their remarkable stories live on in this moving documentary. Wednesday, November 12, 2:00pm, FREE (#7899)

While the holidays are a time of celebration for many, they can also be a challenging time for people grieving the loss of loved ones. Surrounded by images of happy faces and besieged by family gatherings, they may face unattainably high expectations to “feel good.” And holiday festivities can send difficult, mixed messages as grieving adults struggle with the sadness, fear and guilt that often accompany the loss of a cherished spouse or family member. For example, a woman who recently lost her husband may dread the holidays, because they remind her of the memories and traditions she can no longer share with her spouse. Yet, rather than feeling it’s OK to take a step back from the celebrations this year, she may feel even more pressure to participate. In an effort to “protect” their mom from feeling sad, angry or lonely -- some of the many common feelings experienced by grieving adults -- well-intentioned daughters and sons might “insist” that mom attend a family party. Kids may say, “Come with us, you’ll feel better,” but their mom may feel, “If I don’t go with you I’m letting you down.” Offering grieving adults the support to express their grief is not something we, as a society, do easily. Loving children might genuinely want their parents to “feel better” and “move on,” yet they may inadvertently disregard their parents’ true feelings.
Sometimes it can also help grieving adults to sit down one-one-one with a professional social worker to discuss their feelings and questions about the grief process. If you’re concerned about yourself or a friend in the community who is coping with grief, please call Bev Wessels at (847) 588-8420.
847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com
Thus, providing those with significant losses the time and freedom to share their feelings is very important. Even if they express emotions troubling for listeners to take in, offering nonjudgmental support can profoundly help them. They need to be able to trust that it’s acceptable for them to cry, be irritable or even feel angry during the holidays -- a time when people are “supposed to be happy.”

Holiday Cards from Santa Ho Ho Ho! We have it on very good authority that Santa (being a senior himself) hangs out at the NSC very regularly. In fact, he has enlisted the help of the NSC staff to collect his letters from the seniors in Niles who may be unable to go out (to the mall to see him), so that he may send them a card of holiday wishes!! If you are or know of a homebound Niles senior who would like to receive a non-denominational holiday card from the jolly ol’ fat man himself, please call the NSC at 847-588-8420 or stop by to let us know the name and address of the person. Due to Santa’s busy schedule, we need the names and addresses received no later than 5 pm Friday, December 5th.
The goal of the Giving Tree is to provide nutritious food and gifts to needy families in Niles during the holiday season and beyond. In the spirit of the holidays, let’s have a fully decorated tree in the lobby and truly make a difference to those less fortunate The giving tree will be in the lobby at the NSC, beginning Monday, November 24.
