MIXING AXIS, Diploma project /BAS/ Spring -13

SUNNHORDLAND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH PARK In collaboration with fellow student Jørund Bjørlykke Tutors: Thomas Wiesner/Espen folgerø

Each of the thirty largest cities in Norway emerged as a consequence of maritime infrastructure. However, as the use of automobiles has expanded, and with it the road network, it has replaced many of the functions that were provided exclusively by the sea. This diploma proposes an industrial knowledge hub as a strategy to develop the area between a historic city core and a suburban shopping area. The site of investigation is on the Island of Stord, an island located in the region of Sunnhordland, on the West coast of Norway The historic centre of Leirvik is being challenged by a rapidly developing shopping area along the costal highway E39 at Heiane. Instead of development merging the two cores, a constant growth is taking place outwards, generating an ever greater distance between the evolving center at Heiane and Leirvik. The industry at Stord has proven highly resilient in adapting to global competition, yet once again they have begun loosing contracts and are being forced to reconsider how they can be competitive into the future. We propose to expand the role of the existing industry through the creation of the Sunnhordland Offshore Research Cluster, situated between Leirvik´s historic city core and Heiane´s highway shopping core.

Inspired by the low cost sheds used in retail areas, the architecture explores the potensial of this typology. By mixing different programs the project aims to keep a higher intesity during the whole day.

The simple structure of a shed allows for a flexible use and different climatic zones. By using elements from this standarized way of building the project propose to play with the skin of the shed and introduces smaller climated boxes inside the shed depending on it´s function.

THE LOGIC OF THE BUILDING Sunnhordland Offshore park consists of two different axis. The Urban Axis is pointing towards Heiane (retail area) and Leirvik (the old city centre). The green axis is streching from the school and sport area to the recreational area on the other side of the coastal highway E-39.

FRAME WORK

The core element of the intervention is a big test pool in which the two axis are crossing over. By placing the Research Park in between the two centres we intend to start a densification process. Better facilities for walking and bisycling would improve the accessibility between the two centres. In close future we believe these two will grow as one. The Urban Axis contains offices, an engineer school, dwellings and pathways. The Green axis is planned as a park. It contains green houses, pathways and parks.

MIXING AXIS

SUNNHORDLAND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH PARK

Exhibition opening at Stord Kulturhus

Reflections on the diploma project Sunnhordland Offshore Research Park We incorporated a third element - the industry, to find a way to attack a well known general locked phenomenon found all over Norway. We made the industry less dangerous and more familiar by mixing it with elements from the city, the retail area and with the qualities around the site. We have asked ourselves if it was right to suggest one big intervention instead of several small proposals between the two centres. It is ment as a start of a densification process, in that sense we believe a strong intervention is needed. It was important for us to exhibit the diploma in our home town Stord. For the citizents of Stord this is not just a school project, but a serious saying in the discussion about their future city plan.

Double Home Urbanism, Third Master Course/ BAS/ Bergen /Fall 2012 Teacher: Deane Simpson In collaboration with Erlend Strønstad og Mathias Josefson

This Master course was a pure research project adressing the phenomena of the increasing growth of both Single Family Housing and Cabins in Norway. As much as compare the two topologies we where also looking at the consequenses of the trend of having two (some have three) houses now growing more and more similar each other.

Urban Scale was our chapter and re-

search theme. We drew 12 different samples of Norwegian urbanisation patterns and produced maps to compare the development of cabin- and single family home areas. By studying distances to central functions, the density in wich the typology is organized and the infrastructure both under and over ground we found that many cabin areas have actually more urban qualities than many sfh-areas.

By having the course Double home Urbanism I experienced a completely new way of working. By having a pure research course, it showed me how the reseach itself could be architecture. When digging so deep that the preconseptions around a phenomena, gets blown away, you get to the really interesting layer. I also learned the great tool GIS. Our material was made as a book which we are still trying to publish.

Architectural Ownership, Second Master Course/ Studio B3/ AHO/ Oslo/ Spring 2012 Teacher: Per Olav Fjeld and Rolf Gerzlauer Field trip: Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Naoshima)

This master course was in search for a new architecture through a process of model making, architecture theory and writing. “The new territory” and its content as an indication towards “the new collective” and its “ownership” was discussed and generated an extensive architectural material. Common for the spatial investigations and for the courses pedagogical profile was to challenge the architectonic isolated object and the architectural autonomy properties,

My project

was investigating how to make an architecture which could inspire the “new collective” defined by different architectural ownership. An infrastructure that invites for different activities to happen. It became a structural landscape, changing as you move through it. The sticks are working together with the strings and frame. I wanted to make a structure that could grow around its own logic without being only an object, more a condition. All the sticks together reveals a collectiveness more than an individuality. The plot for the project was beside the munk prior Sainte Marie de la Tourette in a valley close to Lyon where we stayed almost a week. A place to reflect is very much about taking the time to reflect. To allow yourself a peace in mind. A room for this demands a new architecture, but we also found a new program: A place to chop wood, dry wood and burn it. All three capable of making a reflecting moment.

the munk prior Sainte Marie de la Tourette

We lived in the munk prior Sainte Marie de la Tourette of Le Courbusier for five nights. It made me understand two things: * How strong architecture I can create with simple geometry. * How hard it is to do this in a strong way. It was a beautiful experience to find Le Courbusiers architecture to function as an everyday architecture, and not as an object you find in books.

Heggernes Valsemølle, Bachelor Project/ BAS/ Bergen/ Spring 2010 - A city archive for the future Teachers: Andre Fontès

My bachelor project was supposed to be a library. But what Bergen need is a new City Archive. Every library in the world can contain more or less the same, but the city archive is specific for each town, and therefor more representable for it`s place. I wanted to make a new place for the archive which today is inside of a mountain, hidden for everyone. I tried to make it visible and as a lighthouse for the city. Heggerneset Valsemølle is an old mill, and contains large silos not used today. With this old building I could enforce the history, not only with its new content, but also by being a part of the history itself. By using an industrial building, many strong architectural qualities was allready there, just waiting to be filled with books and city history.

In my bachelor project I really got my eyes up for the potential of old industrial buildings. Everyone loves the esthetic of old industry sheds, looking at them from far away, but this time I got to fysically work with them. The class worked together when making the exhibition in a building ready to be torn down, but first we had it for a month. It was a lot of work, but a fantastic community spirit! My project was in this old grain silo building. No one would build forty meters high silos for books, but it is truly an inspiration for an architect that spaces like that are up for grabs!
