Good acoustics are essential to productivity, creativity and wellbeing in the workplace. How and where we work has changed considerably over the past few years and whilst we may not have all the answers, it is obvious that many organisations are adopting a more hybrid working model. Workplace architects and interior designers need to create flexible spaces that accommodate hybrid working, connected technology, support wellbeing as well as providing choice. The effect of poor acoustics in the workplace can have huge negative impacts on wellbeing, raising heart rate, increasing stress and reducing productivity. It’s not just offices where noise presents health issues – think about noisy restaurants, hotel lobbies, schools and hospitals. People respond to noise differently and with as much as 40% of the population being neurodiverse, getting the acoustics right in a commercial interiors setting is now more important than ever.

We believe acoustics need to be a vital consideration at the design stage of any project.
SOUND? WHAT IS
Sound is energy that travels in waves through air, water or other substances and can be heard (Collins Dictionary)
8
25 mins
is the time it takes to return to focus after distraction (University of California)
NOISE? Noise is a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance. Noise causes stress and makes us want to protect ourselves.
9
WHAT IS
All sounds are made the same way – by vibrations. The vibrations move back and forth at about 786mph, the speed of sound, creating sound waves which travel through the air to our ears. What happens to the sound as it moves around depends on how far the sound is from its source and the surfaces it encounters. Hard surfaces popular in today’s commercial interiors such as glass, concrete and brick have little absorption properties resulting in high levels of reverberation or echo. This affects the acoustic comfort of a space making it difficult to hold conversations and concentrate.
WHAT HAPPENS
NEXT?
10
Whatis
REVERBERATION
and why is it important?
Many of today’s commercial interiors often have noise levels above 60dB which can be too loud for concentration. As humans, we have a sensitivity to sound that is in-built and comes from the days when we had to be alert to any noise signalling the risk of attack. With this in mind, it’s easy to see how the fluctuating noise levels within commercial environments can have negative health impacts, triggering our fight or flight response, raising heart rate and releasing stress hormones and affecting our overall wellbeing which in turn will impact our productivity.
Recommended reverberation time in commercial settings
Reverberation is the persistence of a sound after its source has stopped, caused by multiple reflections of the sound within a closed space.
To put this into context, we have often assessed the reverberation time in spaces that have no acoustic treatment to be between 3-4 seconds and sometimes even as long as 5 seconds.
Reverberation time refers to the time it takes for the reflected sound to dissipate once the source of the sound has stopped and is measured as RT60.
Open Workspace
0.5 seconds
Classroom
0.4-0.6 seconds
Hospitals
0.4-0.7 seconds
Restaurants
0.7-0.8 seconds
In order to reduce reverberation times within a space there are various acoustic solutions on offer. We specialise in designing and creating sustainable sound absorbing products such as ceiling rafts and baffles, wall coverings and furniture that all help to absorb noise, making the space a better place to work, promoting wellbeing and increasing productivity.
RT60 stands for Reverberation Time and the 60 refers to dB. RT60 is a measure of the time after the sound source ceases that it takes for the sound pressure level to reduce by 60 dB. Knowing the RT60 of a room is crucial for architects and interior designers, especially in today’s workplace environments where over 50% of offices are large open-plan spaces and where four in five people consider noise in their offices to be distracting.
If you’d like to learn more about acoustics and how we can help you to manage noise effectively across every space, please give us a call – we’re happy to offer advice and guidance.

Lull – meaning a temporary interval of quiet – is our range of suspended acoustic screens designed to create a sense of quiet and calm to different zones within busy office environments. Lack of acoustic comfort is often cited as a bugbear of the modern office – whilst a noisy office may work for some people, others prefer a more quiet, calm environment to work in.

Acoustic Photography Our acoustic photography canvasses feature a range of stunning images by landscape photographer Richard Osbourne. The benefits of including images of nature are well-documented and include helping to reduce heart rate, stress and improve overall wellbeing. Designed to help bring the outside in and connect your commercial spaces to nature, the acoustic photographic panels include well known UK landscapes as well as seascapes and nature images. We don't think lack of wall space should prohibit a project from introducing elements of biophilic design and our canvasses come in a range of sizes to fit all spaces.
