Una volta mi hanno mandato in Cina, qualche mese. Di notte sognavo le mie colline di vigneti. Su Facebook trovai un messaggio del mio vecchio amico Gianluca, compagno di studi ad agraria nella mia vita precedente, e come me in giro per il mondo, lui a seguire vigneti per un’importante azienda.. - Come va? Che fai? Automatizzo impianti in giro per il mondo anche se sarei agronomo e tu? - Faccio l’enologo. - Ma dai! Lo sai che la mia famiglia ha un’azienda vinicola? Perché non creiamo un vino insieme? Che idea! Dopo due anni la prima etichetta, la mia, la sua, la nostra prima creatura. Qualcuno mi chiede ancora – Perché hai mollato quel bellissimo lavoro nella multinazionale? Brave C’è chi le cose le fa standard e chi invece le vuole su misura. Ma quando si fanno le bici su misura come fanno John W. e Tom, ci vuole coraggio. Ci vuole una Brave dike. Anzi due. A nove anni i miei genitori mi mandarono per un’estate intera da nonno William che abitava in una grande casa di campagna, in Alabama. ogni giorno, a metà pomeriggio, uscivamo a fare una passeggiata in bicicletta ed io, sulle mie piccole ruote, pedalavo di gran carriera per tenere testa alla sua andatura tranquilla. “Ricordati ragazzo, la bicicletta è una parte di te!”. Lui sulla sua avrebbe potuto dormirci, ne conosceva ogni dettaglio, l’aveva smontata e rimontata mille volte, ricucendosela addosso come un abito di sartoria. era la sua passione, gli scorreva dentro. Anni dopo, nella confusione brulicante di New York, ho capito che aveva ragione. Così, con il mio amico tom, ho aperto la mia sartoria di biciclette. ogni persona ha il proprio ritmo e ogni ritmo ha la propria bici. Scattante in una pista a cronometro, o sornione lungo un viale alberato. o ancora impavido e coraggioso, zigzagante nel traffico imbottigliato. Coraggiosi siamo anche io e tom, con le nostre Brave Dike addosso, da mattina fino a sera, ogni giorno con una bici diversa da realizzare. Ma questa dopotutto è la nostra passione e ci va bene così. // There are those who do things the usual way and those who do it their way. But when you’re making bikes to order like John W. and Tom, you need courage. You need a Brave dike. Or better, two. When I was nine my parents sent me for a whole summer to stay with Grandpa William who lived in a big country house in Alabama. Every day, halfway through the afternoon, we went out for a bike ride and with my small wheels I pedalled like a champion to keep up with his easy pace. “Remember kid, the bike is part of you!”. He could have slept on his bike, he knew its every detail, he had taken it apart and put it back together a thousand times, customising it like a handmade suit. It was his passion, it ran in his veins. Years later, in the hustle and bustle of New York, I understood that he was right. And that’s why I opened my custom bike shop with my friend Tom. Everyone has the right to find their own rhythm and every rhythm has its own bike. Bombing round a track in a time trial or meandering down tree-lined avenues. Or fearless and brave, zigzagging through traffic jams. Tom and I are brave too with our Brave Dikes on, from morning till night, creating a different bike every day. But this is, after all, our passion and we like it this way. // die einen machen die dinge standardgemäß; die Anderen wollen sie nach Maß. Aber wenn man Fahrräder nach Maß macht wie John W. e Tom, braucht man Mut dazu. Man braucht ein Brave dike. das heißt zwei. Als ich neun war, schickten mich meine Eltern den ganzen Sommer über zu meinem Opa William; der wohnte in einem großen Haus auf dem Land in Alabama. Jeden Nachmittag machten wir eine Spazierfahrt mit dem Fahrrad, und ich trat fest in die Pedale, um der ruhigen Fahrt meines Großvaters Stand halten zu können. “Vergiss nicht, mein Junge, das Fahrrad ist ein Teil von dir!”. Er hätte auf seinem schlafen können, er kannte es wie seine Westentasche; er hatte es unzählige Male zerlegt und wieder zusammengebaut und hat es sich am Leibe zurecht geschneidert, wie ein maßgeschneidertes Stück vom Schneider. Das war seine Leidenschaft, die in seinen Adern steckt. Erst Jahre später, im frenetischen Durcheinander von New York, habe ich verstanden, dass er Recht hatte. So habe ich mit meinem Freund Tom meine Fahrradschneiderei eröffnet. Jeder hat seinen eigenen Rhythmus und jeder Rhythmus hat sein eigenes Fahrrad. Flink auf einer Schnelllaufbahn oder gelassen entlang der Allee. Oder aber unerschrocken und mutig, im Zigzag-Kurs mitten im stehenden Verkehr. Mutig sind auch Tom und ich, wie unsere Brave Dike, die wir von morgens bis abends tragen, jeden Tag mit einem anderen Fahrrad, das maßzuschneidern ist. Aber das ist ja auch unsere Leidenschaft und wir sind zufrieden so.

Glider

Una cassa fatta a mano permette all’uomo di sentire il suono, la vibrazione dell’universo. Una Glider dike gli fa sentire il suolo, la materia della Terra. La Terra sotto i piedi. Leggetela la storia di Claudio. In principio era un gran casino. Il Big Bang ce lo raccontano come una grande esplosione … io come me lo immagino? Un rumore immenso. Un boato assurdo durato forse qualche istante, ma più probabilmente qualche milione di anni. Il tempo che tutto si formasse. Che le stelle prendessero forma, che ogni pezzetto di materia trovasse un proprio posto e una propria vibrazione. Così la musica, il suono nella sua perfetta espressione, altro non è che la vibrazione purificata. Che si chiami Mina o Rachmaninov esce da una fonte puntiforme e si diffonde con onde sinusoidali nello spazio, definendo il volume di ogni oggetto. Migliore è la cassa e migliore può essere la nostra percezione della musica, l’eco di quella vibrazione primordiale, depurata e rarefatta. Questo strumento umano funziona come una sorta di filtro, una barriera ma anche una chiave d’accesso. Come quelle due casse lì, sopra lo scaffale, che sono identiche a quelle che ho creato per un importante studio di registrazione di tokyo. Similmente, le Glider Dike, strumento umano ed espressione di eccellenza tecnologica, separano l’uomo dal suolo ma lo ricongiungono alla materia. Non è banale. // Handmade speakers give man the chance to hear the sound, the vibration of the universe. The Glider dike lets him feel the ground, the raw earth. The World under his feet. Like those two speakers there, on the shelf, identical to those I created for some well known recording studios in Tokyo. Similarly, Glider Dikes are a human instrument and expression of technological excellence, they separate man from the ground but they bring him back to the earth. Bis sich die Sterne bilden konnten, bis jedes Stückchen Materie seinen Platz und eine eigene Schwingung finden konnte. So ist die Musik, der Ton in seinem perfekten Ausdruck, nichts anderes als die reine, die pure Schwingung. Ob es Mina oder Rachmaninov ist, sie geht von einer punktförmigen Quelle aus und breitet sich mit sinusförmigen Wellen im Raum aus und definiert so das Volumen eines jeden Gegenstandes. Je besser die Lautsprecherbox ist, desto besser ist unser Wahrnehmungsvermögen von der Musik, das Echo dieser gereinigten und verfeinerten Urschwingung. Dieses menschliche Instrument funktioniert wie eine Art Filter, eine Sperre, aber auch wie ein Schlüssel. Wie diese zwei Lautsprecherboxen oben auf dem Regal, die identisch sind wie die, die ich für ein wichtiges Aufnahmestudio in Tokyo gebaut habe. Ähnlich wie die Glider Dike, menschliches Instrument und Ausdruck von technologischer Exzellenz; sie trennen den Menschen vom Boden, aber verbinden ihn mit der Materie. Das ist nicht banal.

La proffe d’arte ci ha insegnato a usare le tempere portandoci in classe dei fogli grandi di cartoncino rosso. Fuori nevicava e mancava poco a Natale. “Ragazzi, vi do due ore, dipingete la neve”. Sta neve cadeva ovunque, riempiva i cesti delle bici, copriva marciapiedi, imbiancava i berretti delle vecchiette che uscivano per comprare il pane. Ma dove non cadeva, non c’era traccia di bianco. Così ho preso il pennello, l’ho affogato nella boccetta di colore e ho riprodotto lo spettacolo sul mio banco, coprendo ogni traccia di rosso, del foglio, ma anche ogni traccia del verdino fastidio del mio banco. Uno sollevava l’angolo e i colori erano ancora lì, nascosti sotto la coltre di tempera candida. “Sperotto non ci siamo capiti” ha commentato lei con le mani ai fianchi quando è passata oltre il muro delle prime file… “Pulirai tutto in ricreazione”. tutti sono capaci di imbiancare. Il segreto è quello di non lasciare traccia di sé e quel banco l’ho tirato a lucido che sembrava più nuovo di quando è uscito dalla fabbrica. Così quando mi chiedono di imbiancare, arrivo agile come una gazzella, leggero come una piuma. So now when they call me to paint I arrive as quick as a gazelle, light as a feather. Die Kunstlehrerin hat uns gelehrt, wie man Ölfarben benutzt und hat uns große Blätter roten Tonpapiers in die Klasse gebracht. Draußen schneite es und es war kurz von Weihnachten. “Ich gebe euch zwei Stunden Zeit: Malt den Schnee”. Dieser Schnee fiel überall, er füllte die Fahrradkörbe, bedeckte den Gehweg, ließ die Hauben der alten Damen weiß werden, die aus dem Haus gingen, um Brot zu kaufen. Aber dort wo der Schnee nicht hinfiel, war von Weiß keine Spur. Ich nahm also den Pinsel, tauchte ihn in das Farbglas ein und habe das Spektakel auf meinem Tisch dargestellt; ich habe das Rot vollkommen zugedeckt, aber auch jede Spur des störenden Grün meiner Bank. Einer hob das Eck des Blattes an und die Farben waren noch da, versteckt unter der dichten Decke der weißen Ölfarbe. “Sperotto, wir haben uns wohl nicht verstanden “ kommentierte sie mit den Händen in die Hüften gestützt, als sie die Mauer der ersten Reihen überwunden hatte.... “ du putzt alles während der Pause sauber”. Alle sind in der Lage weiß anzustreichen. Das Geheimnis liegt darin, keine Spur von sich zu hinterlassen; und diesen Tisch habe ich so zum Glänzen gebracht, dass er noch neuer aussah, als er aus der Fabrik kam. Aus diesem Grund komme ich flink wie eine Gazelle, leicht wie eine Feder, wenn mich jemand fragt weiß zu streichen. In meinen Agility Dike stelle ich mir vor, die Welt zu färben, weil das etwas ist, das mir leicht von der Hand geht.

Talent Mania della perfezione? Marino la chiama amore per i particolari. è talento, un dono di natura, come una Talent dike. I dettagli per alcuni sono solo dettagli. Per altri sono una mania. Per me sono una mania da sempre. I pastelli nell’astuccio erano una delle mie ossessioni. Procedevano dal nero al bianco, passando ordinatamente per le sfumature di blu, di rosso e di giallo. e siccome ritenevo osceno che il verde fosse sempre molto più corto degli altri colori, mano a mano che questo si accorciava temperavo accuratamente gli stessi centimetri anche dal bianco, dal grigio o dal terra di Siena bruciato che non usavo mai. Non so ancora se purtroppo o per fortuna, nella tipografia di famiglia questa ossessione per i dettagli è rimasta la mia compagna più fedele. Da quando mio padre mi portava con sé a cinque anni fino a quando, finita la scuola di grafica, ho cominciato a lavorarci. ogni oggetto che esce dalle rotativa è una collezione di colori da sistemare. Il solo pensiero che qualcosa venga sfogliato e non sia semplicemente perfetto, mi fa venire il formicolio ai piedi, anche se loro sono avvolti nelle mie talent Dike. Così capita spesso che, per un blu che sfuma verso il prussia piuttosto che verso il ciano, si fa notte prima che io me le tolga, le Dike, e rimango a braccetto solo con lei, la mia ossessione per i dettagli. // Obsessed with perfection? Marino calls it a love of detail. It’s talent, a gift from nature, just like the Talent dike. The details for some are just details. For others they are an obsession. For me they have always been an obsession. The crayons in my pencil case were one of my obsessions. They went from white to black, moving in an orderly fashion through the shades of blue, red and yellow. And because I thought it was obscene that the green was always much shorter than the other colours, I would sharpen all the others carefully to the same millimetre including the white, the grey and the burnt Sienna which I never used. I still don’t know if it’s good or bad, but in the family print shop this obsession for details has remained my most loyal companion. Every since my father took me there when I was five years old right up until I finished studying graphic design and started working there. Each object that comes out of the press is like that collection of colours that needs to be organised. Just the thought that something could be glanced upon that isn’t absolutely perfect makes my feet tingle, even thought they are covered by my Talent Dikes. As often happens when, for example, a Prussian blue starts to move more towards a Cian, and it is night time before I take off my Dikes and all that remains is my obsession for detail. //perfektionswahn? Marino nennt es Liebe zum detail. es ist Talent, ein Geschenk der natur wie ein Talent dike. Details sind für einige eben nur Details. Für andere sind sie eine Wahn. Für mich sind sie schon immer ein Wahn. Die Buntstifte im Federmäppchen waren eine Wahnvorstellung von mir. Sie lagen von schwarz bis weiß geordnet ordentlich alle Blau- Rot- und Gelbtöne ab folgend im Mäppchen. Und da ich es als widerlich empfand, dass der grüne Stift immer viel kürzer war als die anderen Farben, spitzte ich aufmerksam, je kürzer der grüne Stift wurde, die gleiche Zentimeterlänge auch beim Weiß-, Grau- oder Erdfarben-Stift, die ich eigentlich nie benutzte. Ich weiß noch nicht, ob leider oder zum Glück dieser Wahn für die Details in der Familiendruckerei geblieben ist als meine treue Wegbegleiterin. Seit mein Vater mich im Alter von fünf Jahren mitnahm, bis ich, nach Abschluss der Graphikschule zu arbeiten begann. Jeder Gegenstand, der aus dem Rotationsmechanismen ausbricht, ist eine Farbkollektion die geordnet werden muss. Der bloße Gedanke, dass etwas durchgeblättert werden kann und nicht perfekt ordentlich ist, verschafft mir Taubheitsgefühl an den Füßen, auch wenn sie in meinen Talent Dike stecken So kommt es häufig vor, dass für ein Blau, das eher ins Preußisch-Blau als ins Cyan-Blau geht, es spät für mich wird, bevor ich meine Dike ausziehe und ich bleibe allein mit meinem Wahn für die Details.

digger Viaggiare, girare il mondo. per lavoro e per ispirazione. Rimanere incantati, poi risvegliarsi nel brusco impatto con la fatica del cantiere. Come è successo a Andrea. Architetto. La settimana scorsa non c’era proprio tempo per passare per casa a cambiarsi. Dall’aeroporto mi aspettavano subito in cantiere, in Italia. Ma Dubai mi era entrata dentro, con la sua combinazione di esotico ancestrale e futuribile avanguardistico. Accade spesso quando mi ubriaco di paesaggi: chiudo gli occhi e continuo a vedere le impronte dei grattacieli, delle stanze e le sagome irregolari dell’orizzonte. Non solo la città, ma ogni suo dettaglio era già ispirazione mentre osservavo il cielo dal finestrino dell’aereo. I suoi contrasti cromatici, il suo accento a metà strada tra l’arabo e il texano, i suoi odori speziati di fast food. Così quando sono sceso dal taxi e sono sprofondato con la mia Digger Dike in una pozzanghera di fango anziché in una buca di sabbia, quasi ci sono rimasto male. Davanti a me non c’erano più silenziose presenze velate intraviste dalla Jeep fuori città, ma la mia assistente Cristina con il suo sorriso accogliente “Buongiorno architetto, abbiamo un piccolo problema con lo scavo per l’interrato”. // Travelling the world. Aus beruflichen Gründen und aus Gründen der Inspiration. Verzaubert werden und dann plötzlich bei den Anstrengungen der Baustellen erwachen. Wie es Andrea ergangen ist. Architekt.. Letzte Woche war keine Zeit geblieben, um nach Hause zu fahren und sich umzuziehen. Vom Flughafen erwarteten sie mich direkt auf der Baustelle, in Italien. Aber Dubai war mir unter die Haut gegangen mit seiner Mischung aus weitervermittelter Exotik und avantgardistischem Futurismus. Es passiert oft, wenn ich mich an Landschaften nicht satt sehen kann, dann schließe ich die Augen und sehe weiterhin die Spuren der Hochhäuser, der Räume und die unregelmäßigen Umrisse des Horizonts. Nicht nur die Stadt, auch jedes Detail der Stadt war bereits Inspiration, während ich den Himmel vom Fenster des Flugzeugs aus beobachtete. Seine Farbkontraste, sein Akzent zwischen Arabisch und Texanisch, seine würzigen Gerüche nach Fast Food. So war ich, als ich vom Taxi ausstieg und mit meinen Digger Dike in eine Schlammpfütze getreten bin anstatt in ein Sandloch, geradezu enttäuscht. Vor mir waren keine stillen Präsenzen in Schleier gehüllt, die ich vom Jeep vor der Stadt gesehen habe, sondern meine Assistentin Cristina mit ihrem einladenden Lächeln und einem “Guten Tag, Herr Architekt, wir haben ein kleines Problem mit den Grabungen des Kellerfundaments”.
