the ‘third place’ Extending the Physical Public Realm: The ‘Third Place’ As a Charged Interstitial Space
MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE 7+(6,6 352-(&7 SUPERVISOR: DR. KENDRA SCHANK SMITH ADVISOR: MASHA ETKIND
Media Used: Revit Architecture, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
Project Was Published in 2012
The ‘Third Place’ is an informal public gathering space that provides for meaningful social experiences. It is vital to current societal needs, as it brings back traditional forms of social interaction that are missing in the virtual realm of communication technologies, the physical interaction. This thesis works with the interstitial space, the empty space, the cavity of architecture, as it aims to create a ‘third place’ that becomes a continuous space of actions and events. To visually and physically connect the occupants of each area of the complex and to FUHDWH D FRQWLQXRXV ˊRZ RI PRYHPHQW WKURXJK WKH site, the interstitial spaces will be designed as a succession of open, and physically connected spaces. 7KHVH DUH ˊH[LEOH RSHQ HQGHG DQG PXOWLIXQFWLRQDO spaces, which provide for seasonal application. Each member of the community, whether it is a teen or an adult, will feel welcomed. They can appropriate these spaces for their own use, borrowing it for a certain period of time to carry out their desired programs and activities.

PORT OF ENTRY Design is open-ended, highly accessible and welcoming. The form of the building does not force the activity; it is rather the people that create the building form through their activity. Central Courtyard at Night
VILLAGE | SELF-SUSTAINING CLUSTER Acts as a complete organism. Has all of the required elements to sustain itself.
BUILDING AND A LANDSCAPE The building becomes an extensions of the outdoor public realm. It is an urban landscape where the interior spaces are joined with street, park, plaza to create a continuous social setting.
TECHNOLOGY AND INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS A zone that is infused by interactive technologies. A buffer, unifying link of the overall third place, a place where each individuals will come together, physically interact and be engrossed by new technologies.

Gould Street Sectional Perspective
The essence of the project is shown by the Gould street facade with a visually dynamic approach to the envelope. A fragmentation of volumes is created by push and pull strategy of the massing. These are various study spaces on different levels which are connected together through multilevel winter gardens. This approach to the project aims to strengthen the relationship between interior spaces and their connection to the outside.

Material: Mat Board
This experimental model explores the concept of temporality – an arrangement established with no thought of continuance but with the idea of change over time. The walls can be moved along the gaps to test and construct different spatial arrangements with varying light conditions. It is a process of creating new places.

The program of the building is built to celebrate cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity of the citizens of Osh and to encourage formal and informal meetings and gathering of people by providing spaces that allow for presentations, performances, displays and exhibitions. Osh House is a place where each and every individual is welcomed.

[ Program ]
There is a linear axis, a path that connects the Government Building to the Osh House cutting through it and continuing to form the axis for the park. To symbolize the government, the side facing the government building expresses a formal linearity with its facade, column design and landscaping elements. On opposite side this expression is changed, design is irregular and diffused symbolizing the people of Osh and their nature.

The Solartorium is designed as an outdoor, all-season auditorium functioning as a proponent of the intended playground to be implemented in the northern portion of Sherbourne Park.
From a programmatic standpoint, the structure serves as a stage for organized performances and public art, an informal public gathering hub, or simply a place to enjoy the view of the lake as framed by the structure itself.
The structure utilizes the notion of occupant engagement as the driving force behind the design concept, whereby the operability of the overhead roof structure coincides with the ‘movement’ of the sun across the sky. As such, levels of shading and natural light can be continuously manipulated by means of mechanical motorization to allow for both optimal lighting and shading conditions during different times of the day and year.
