HISTORY OF BOQUHAN
ESTABLISHED 1979

Boquhan Estate is situated 8 miles west of Stirling on fertile carseland. However, until the late 18th century all the area from Gartmore in the west to Stirling in the east was marshland. Not only is this carse the largest area of level ground in Scotland but until much of it was drained it was the largest bog in Britain. Highlanders disposed of their land after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion were given 8 acres of land on a 38 year lease in return for cutting out the bog which was up to 4 metres deep and floating the peat down the river LISETTE Forth and so out ESTABLISHED 1979 to sea. Boquhan has another connection with Bonnie Prince Charlie EBL Tested BSE Free Signet Recorded and the ‘45’ – he and his officers dined at Boquhan House before crossing the River Forth at a Ford near Boquhan thus evading the Hanoverian Army which was garrisoned at Stirling Castle.

Boquhan has been fortunate in having owners willing to invest in building and infrastructure. BOQUHAN In the early part of the 20th century Boquhan was owned by Steven Mitchell, who having made his money in the tobacco industry turned to farming. His main interests Boquhan Estate has had many owners over the years. In the 12th were breeding Shorthorn cattle and magnificent Clydesdale horses. century it was a stronghold of the Graham Clan who controlled much Ross Anderson, who had prospered in the world of engineering SAMMY the estate in 1962 and making good use of his engineers of west Stirlingshire. However, after Lady Margaret Graham married a bought Campbell it became for many years a main seat for that clan. There training built the dairy cattle byre and milking parlour. He also laid is a small cemetery on a wooded knoll on the hill behind Boquhan most of the roads which go round the estate. Boquhan ownership has now gone full circle and is now owned again by the Graham with many Campbell gravestones. The Lairds of Boquhan had a huge influence on the agriculture of the family and it is home to 500 Jersey cows, a top-rate Limousin herd www.grahams-limousin.co.uk area beingBOQUHAN always at the cutting edge of new developments they and a small select flock of Berrichon sheep.

Gargunnock show which is still held to this day, held its first show in 1794 on Boquhan Estate, they also sponsored ploughing matches in the area.

Looking from Boquhan you can see Stirling Castle, The Wallace Monument and the three Bens – Ben Vorlich, Ben Ledi and Ben Lomond. Much of the history of Scotland took place in the Stirling area. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the noise of battles fought in this area – Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn, Sauchieburn and Sheriffmuir. Stirling was such a strategic place the army remained garrisoned in the castle until the last century – just in case the Scots decided to rebel.

Method and Order of Sale: All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is authorised and announced by the Auctioneers. Conditions of Sale: The sale is held subject to the Auctioneers General Terms and Conditions of Sale (printed in this catalogue) and to the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale from Jersey Cattle Society. These rules and conditions are not printed in this catalogue but will be available for inspection. Settlement and Clearance of Stock: Settlement in full is due to the Auctioneers immediately at the conclusion of the Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official PASS obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement and all stock should be cleared from the sale premises on the day of the sale.
Commissions: The Auctioneers will faithfully execute commissions to purchase on behalf of buyers unable to attend the sale in person upon receipt of written notice and instructions received in their office not later than 48 hours before commencement of sale. FOREWORD On behalf of the Graham family, we would like to welcome you to Boquhan Home Farm; home of the 300 cow Graham’s Jersey herd. Graham’s Family Dairy have been involved with the Jersey breed for almost 30 years, after buying 20 cows from the Queen’s own herd at Windsor. Our award winning pedigree cows graze on the lush pastures of the Carse of Stirling, beneath the beautiful setting of Ben Lomond. The Carse is known for its luxurious grass and this helps our cows produce their luxurious milk which is altogether higher in fat, protein and calcium than normal milk. The Jersey breed has helped the business establish a strong reputation in the UK for a quality product range and has provided the dairy industry with what it needs today and for the sustainable future. With a smaller frame, longevity, very high components and incredible calving ease, the Jersey cow produces 25% less methane per litre of milk than any other dairy breed. This noble brown cow is actually green! Today it is a ‘closed herd’ which allows Graham’s to maintain numbers by breeding from within. This gives us full control over health standards, protects against diseases from outside and allows us to continue to produce luxurious milk from our family of Jerseys.
