General Information & Sale Notes

LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1 /4 mile of M6.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: All animals are sold under British Limousin Cattle Society auction rules and conditions of sale drawn up by the N.B.A. These entries will be sold subject to these rules along with the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the N.B.A. conditions of sale shall prevail.

INSURANCE: A representative of the H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

ONLINE BIDDING FACILITY will be available on MartEye

REGISTRATIONS: All pedigree stock in the Sale are registered with the British Limousin Cattle Society (Tel. 02476 696500).

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

Purchasers unable to remove their stock on the day of sale can arrange overnight accommodation with the Auctioneers on the understanding that all cattle are at Purchasers’ risk.

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree transfers will be effected by the Auctioneers and the British Limousin Cattle Society as soon as possible after the Sale. Full Pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all members.

NBA LEVY: This Sale is held subject to the Special Terms and Conditions of Sale recommended for Sales of Pedigree Beef Cattle by the National Beed Association. The preparation of these Terms and Conditions has proved a lengthy and costly process and, in order to defray the legal and other costs involved, and to provide a continuing source of revenue to assist the Association in its vital work for Pedigree Cattle Breeders, the Council of the Association has decided that a special levy, amounting to £3 per male and £2 per female head/lot sold (plus VAT) shall be charged to each Purchaser &Vendor.

FOREWORD

My interest in British Limousin cattle started from a young age when my Father Stuart Renton was stockman at the renowned Broadmeadows herd. The success of that herd in the 80s and 90s and the buzz around the farm was infectious and when the opportunity arose in 2007 to purchase a few of my own females, I got the bug in a big way. I have taken a lot of advice since then, slowly building up the females on the strength of the dam lines whilst not paying too much attention to the fashionable sires of the day. The idea was always to build a uniform herd of quality females that look and produce the way Limousin females should; strong, square fleshy females with good legs, milk and character through the head. The result of those efforts is what you see today; a genuine outcross herd of females with plenty of power and style that can produce progeny for both the commercial and pedigree buyer.

As you can see from the catalogue order, we have tried to group the main female families together to highlight the consistency with which these families breed. From Brockhurst Fuzzy, Woodhouse Sara and Haltcliffe Epson to Miscombe Eider, Fatima and Foxhillfarm Primadonna – the herd has enjoyed some terrific success over the 15 years or so since we began in the breed. The purchase of Festival from the famous Champeval herd and subsequently Homebyres Macadoo from Messrs Logan were both crucial in achieving many of these successes including winning Overall Best Herd in 2020 and Reserve Overall Best Herd in 2022 in the Scottish Limousin Herd Competition. In the sale ring, our averages have been improving consistently with highlights including Meadowrig Rifraf & Meadowrig Scorpio at 16 000gns – both of whose dams are included in the sale today. One of the most gratifying experiences for any breeder is to see their animals go on and breed in other herds. A significant number of our bulls have gone to important herds around the country and highlights have included seeing Meadowrig Pedro producing daughters to 30 000gns and 18 000gns for the Dinmore Herd. The Limousin breed has always been a fantastic home away from home, a group of like-minded folks that work extremely hard to achieve their goals. I have made many friends over the years through the shows, sales and opendays and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many friendly and welcoming people from the Limousin family. There has always been opportunity to share many a laugh, beverage and bacon roll as well as the odd tear and disappointment.

It goes without saying that it takes a team to produce a herd of cattle. I would like to thank my father Stuart Renton and my uncle Ross Drummond for their immense contributions toward helping me establish the Meadowrig herd. To Alistair and Doreen Cormack, Thank you for your enduring commitment, professionalism and ambition for the herd. Alistair´s meticulous preparation and management of the herd on a day-to-day basis is well-known but it is also his ability to get results that often sets him apart. I wish both of them the very best for the future and count them as good friends as we draw the Meadowrig herd to a close. Further thanks must go to the team at H&H, especially Jimmy Little who along with by brother Nick Renton have worked hard to make the sale arrangements. Thanks also must go to Mark Phillips and his team for helping prepare the cattle for the sale.

What can we say about Macadoo? Alongside Festival, Macadoo has had a huge impact on the Meadowrig herd. Purchased to compliment the very feminine females at Meadowrig, he has injected serious power, muscle and shape into their progeny which have proven very popular in Carlisle for a number of years. Highlights have included Rifraf & Scorpio selling to 16 000gns as well as Meadowrig Pedro whose progeny have gone on to sell for 30 000gns for Dinmore. His bulls are among the most docile we have come across, making working with them prior to sales and shows painless and stress-free. He is a fantastic worker, quietly settling cows in calf with a fantastoc success rate. It will be very sad to see him go but he deserves to carry on producing quality stock that will only further galvanise the legacy he has left at Meadowrig.

Heterozygous animals (those with one copy of the gene) also exhibit these characteristics but not to the same degree.

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie nt821/nt821) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depths, reduced fat depths and large, rounded rump and thighs. However, unlike F94L, animals with two copies may also have slightly heavier birth weights bringing with it the potential for more difficult calvings, If animals are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calvings.

Q204X

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie Q204X/Q204X) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit larger birth weight and, if females, slightly reduc ed milking ability. Animals that are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/Q204X) will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by larger birth weights and reduced milking ability.

Two further variants of Myostatin exist in the population but are relatively uncommon in their occurrence. Known as nt419 and E291X, their effects are similar to nt821 and Q204X respectively.

Using Myostatin information

An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance.

A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.

3. Genetic Colour

Colour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles. One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene, the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.)

“Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes

“Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant.

“Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene.

“Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).

4. Genetics for Horned/Polled Status

A bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant).

A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned).

A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves.

5. Estimated Breeding Values and Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs & GEBVs)

EBVs & GEBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average.

a) In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line t hat is central on the bar chart...

✓ Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are.

✓ Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are.

b) Accuracy Values (Acc%) are expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV, GEBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate values are less likely to change over time.

c) The numeric EBV & GEBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark which is updated annually.
