Saturday 6th July 2024
Borderway Market, Carlisle, CA1 2RS
Show commences 10am
Welcome to the Society’s 50th anniversary Textravaganza National Texel Show. This day promises to be a remarkable celebration of the Texel breed, showcasing the incredible achievements made by Texel breeders since the breed’s initial importations half a century
Today’s show is just one of many events being held across the UK to commemorate the Society’s milestone year. It presents an exceptional opportunity for everyone connected to the Texel breed to come together and celebrate the remarkable qualities of our breed.
Thanks to the dedication of breeders and the continuing improvements being made, including the recent introductions of economic indexes and genomic evaluations by the Society, the breed continues to enjoy unrivalled success.
Commercial breeders continue to place their trust in the breed, recognising its ability to enhance the value of its progeny across a wide array of environments and farming systems
There is, rightly, much to celebrate and be proud of as the Society marks this remarkable point in its history and demand from new breeders remains strong as new flocks continue to be established across the country. With the Society expecting to issue its 10,000th flock membership in this milestone year.
Moreover, there is a growing international demand for British Texel genetics, and it is truly gratifying to welcome international visitors to this event, mixing with like-minded Texel breeders showcasing the depth and quality of the breed here in the UK.
Of course, today’s event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the sponsors, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to them for their invaluable contribution and unwavering support of the Society.
I wish all exhibitors every success today and throughout this autumn’s sale season. I eagerly anticipate seeing what I am sure will be some excellent sheep in every class.
John Yates
Chief Executive

NOTE TO EXHIBITORS
Members and all those handling sheep are reminded of the need to act responsibly and with animal welfare in mind whenever handling sheep. With many Society events now being streamed live or filmed for later publication, it is important that Society members take care to ensure they present a responsible and ethical image of the sheep industry at all times.
The show operates under the Society auspices.
Conditions of show entry are available on the Society website.
Members are specifically reminded of Byelaw 11.6
No dressing, trimming, clipping of the fleeces, or eye lashes of sheep will be permitted. No artificial whitening on any part of the sheep is permitted. An inspector may be present at the sale or show, they have the authority to disqualify any sheep, which in their opinion, are below a minimum standard with regard to breed type or are found to be contravening the Society Byelaws, right up to the point of sale. The decision of the inspector shall be final and failure to accept the inspector’s decision will result in the entire consignment being rejected.
A maximum of two entries per membership are allowed in each show class.
Sheep may only be shown in one class (other than the group of three and YDP Young Handlers Classes).
It is compulsory to wear the correct competitor number for the class and white show coats, buttoned at all times, while in the show ring. A society tie is also recommended.
Sheep must have been birth notified, registered, or transferred into the flock exhibiting, prior to the day of the event.

The Texel Sheep Society provides data collection and performance reporting services to its membership. From 2024, the service and evaluation combines pedigree and genomic data to provide indexes that are simple to use and understand.
The texelplus economic indexes support the breed’s development with an increased focus on commercial traits and profitability. The terminal and replacement indexes reflect the breed’s influence on industry. Both are presented as the potential extra profit per lamb born in a commercial setting, compared to the population baseline.
The terminal index supports increased profitability through improving prime lambs and is weighted strongly for meat production. The replacement index includes additional maternal traits to optimise production of female replacements.
Commercial producers solely producing prime lambs should use the terminal index to inform their selection; however, those retaining female replacements should use the replacement index.
Sub-indexes underpin the indexes to provide more information on the relative values and ranking of animals for growth, fat and muscle weight, and reproduction.
High ranking rams deliver over £4.50 per lamb more than lower-ranking rams. Over a ram’s working lifetime, this is easily worth an extra £690 per ram; generated through shorter finish times and improved carcass quality.

The Knap flock was established in 2006, with Robert’s first major success coming in 2014 with the sale of Knap Vicious Sid for 145,000gns.
Further success has followed since, with the flock’s influence extending through both males and females. 2023 saw Robert achieve his greatest sale success to date, selling Knap Grumpy at 170,000gns and Knap General Lee at 100,000gns, with a gimmer also selling for 28,000gns.
In the show ring, undoubtedly Robert’s proudest moment was winning the inaugural Textravaganza National show in 2021 with Knap Daisy Duke.
Previously Robert has had the privilege of judging the Balmoral Show and the Royal Welsh Show and is very much looking forward to judging the second Textravaganza National Show at Carlisle.
Jennifer has been around Texels all her life, initially with the Douganhill flock, managed by her father Brian MacTaggart and latterly with both her own Coniston flock and working alongside her husband, Jeff, managing the Procters and Tatham Hall flocks until their dispersal.
Show and sale highlights include a number of breed and interbreed championship wins at shows including the Royal Highland, Great Yorkshire and Royal Welsh, as well as selling to a high of 80,000gns for Procters El Presidente and 10,000gns for Coniston Equinox.
Having shown at events the length and breadth of the UK and previously judged both local shows and the Texel classes at Balmoral Show, Jennifer brings with her a wealth of experience to Textravaganza.
Jennifer says it is a huge honour to have been asked to judge the 50th anniversary national show and an opportunity she is relishing the prospect of.
Lowri Williams - Caron flock
A passionate young breeder, Lowri helps manage her family’s Caron flock which has achieved great success in recent years, including setting a new 32,000gns centre record for a shearling ram at the English National Sale in 2021.
A keen participant at local shows, Lowri has also judged a number of local shows in recent years as well as judging the YDP young handlers’ classes at the Royal Welsh Show in 2019.
Having participated in Society YDP events, Lowri says the opportunity to give something back to younger members by judging the Textravaganza young handlers’ classes is something she’s looking forward to.

‘In any industry there are developments that irrevocably alter the entire landscape of an industry. The introduction and evolution of the Texel breed in UK farming is one such development and it has been proven to have transformed standards.’
What Texel breeders, under the stewardship of the Society, have achieved since the Society’s formation some 50 years ago is nothing short of revolutionary. Society members continue to invest heavily in the breed, both in genetics, but also, via the Society in the latest data driven technologies to keep the breed moving forwards.
As a result of this, the breed remains best placed in the UK sheep industry to take on the latest developments and harness the power of data and genetics to move forwards.
With this in mind, the Society has rolled out Texel specific genomic indexes via its genetic improvement service, texelplus, enhancing the benefits available to commercial sheep farmers from using Texels.
For two decades, our animal DNA tests have enhanced selection, breeding and marketing decisions. Today, Neogen® is a world leader in genomic solutions and services.
Our customers can choose solutions from our extensive testing portfolio to make profitable choices about their animals. Our many services include:
• Testing such as Scrapie
• DNA screening for parentage, commercial traits, genetic recessives and causative mutations
• Genotyping to determine genetic merit & genomic breeding values
