PROGRAM NOTES [redact] attempts to capture the way the human brain reacts to trauma. In the aftermath of a traumatic event, the brain may burn certain details of the event into memory while blocking out other details to protect itself from the emotional and physical pain of the trauma. Perceptions of reality and self may be affected, and it may be extremely difficult to speak about the experience. This piece attempts to sonically portray evolving mental states of one’s brain after trauma. The singer presents a text that is transformed using a series of processes. Through redaction and reordering of words, the text’s meaning is recontextualized and is never presented in its true form.

Please note that this piece deals with sensitive, complex, and extreme emotional states that can be challenging to process. If audience members feel uncomfortable at any time during the piece, they are welcome to step out until they feel ready to return.
PERFORMANCE NOTES [redact] is scored for soprano, clarinet in B♭, tenor saxophone, violin, cello, percussion (crotales with bow, vibraphone with bow, snare drum, and toms), electronics, and optional lighting. The electronics consist of a tape track and click track. The voice and all instruments should be amplified due to the close-detailed nature of certain sounds used in the piece. Individual parts for the voice and all instruments have been included. Should performers choose to read from the score, the cutaway staves beginning at rehearsal letter C are to be read by counting beats shown in the other parts playing during a break in the score. Individual parts (including the soprano score) includes filled in measures with rests with cue lines for other parts rather than cutaway staves. In performances with lighting, three lamps should be placed around the ensemble. Lamps are operated by performers with a foot switch and are turned on and off as marked in the score. Sun-shaped noteheads indicate light on, while filled-in square noteheads indicate light off. Should the ensemble opt to use a lighting board instead of individually controlled lamps, they should use the alternate score with separate lighting staff. A stage diagram is shown below depicting correct lamp placement.
