The Historic Miami River
T
he Miami River is a singularly wondrous place. It is where all of the waters of an ancient geography come together. The Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean here at Biscayne Bay, where the great tributary of the massive river of grass extending down the Florida peninsula —also known as the Everglades—flows into the Bay. This is the place where an original civilization a cultural community that once ruled the Caribbean Sea from a two thousand year old river-head at Miami cultivated the arts. The Tequesta Indians ruled the Carib nations from the mouth of what today is known as the Miami
River (their word for sweet water) and where the original City of Miami was founded. The tribe, long extinct, left its footprint at what is today known as the Miami Circle, where the River meets the Bay. Today, that circle of waters joining together is the birthplace of modern-day Miami. The Miami River is rejoining its past as a new cultural epicenter of the arts. This City, now at the hemispheric center of the continents of North and South America, is the center of a new 21st Century art hub of the Americas. Now, for the fifth edition, the cradle of Miami’s will host its landmark event during the winter art fair season. By Er nest M art in
Miami Circle
D
iscovered in 1998, Miami Circle at Brickell Point is a nationally significant archaeological site located at the mouth of the Miami River in downtown Miami. Archaeological excavations at the site uncovered components of the primary village of the Tequesta, one of the first Native North American groups encountered by Juan Ponce de León in 1513. The site preserves evidence of the complex and planned architecture unique to the Tequesta, including the Miami Circle feature, which is a 38-ft 11-m) circular footprint of a prehistoric structure. The site’s significance lies in the well-preserved evidence of American Indian architecture and the wealth of materials found on the site that relate to trade patterns, as well as the abundance of remains
that shed light on ceremonial Tequesta practices. In January 2009, Miami Circle was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This designation supports HistoryMiami’s mission of continuing to preserve the history of over 2,000 years of human settlement. The Miami Circle joins an elite group of sites in Florida becoming the 41st historic place to bear this national distinction. Under management by HistoryMiami, the Miami Circle opened as a park on February 23, 2011 with a dedication ceremony attended by state and local officials including Florida Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning, Florida State Representative Luis Garcia, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro.

N
ow with a prominent voice in the Downtown Miami - Brickell area, the Miami River Art Fair is the first and only art fair in this area during the winter art fair season and act as a catalyst to attract the elite collectors, art professionals and art-engaged public that have traveled to Miami from all corners of the globe to this luxurious new face of Miami in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. It is our mission to to create an event that put this area on the art-world’s map and aid in the revitalization of the Lower Miami River area and its public greenways by creating a landmark cultural event during a time when Miami is at the center of the global art scene. At the cusp of both the Downtown Miami and Brickell neighborhoods, the Miami Convention Center at the James L. Knight International Center is the ideal location to host this international art fair in the area. It is a large exhibition space worthy of a museum-level showcase. Between the spectacular installations, sculptures, vides and exhibitor booths throught the 30,000 square foot Riverfront Hall, more than 50,000 square foot Riverfront Lobby and the monumental sculpture displayed steps away on the Riverfront Terrace and Riverwalk Sculpture Mall, the Miami River Art Fair is a dazzling showcase of world-class artists. With this pioneering spit, I welcome you to the Cultural Epicenter of the Americas and thank you for your support to the fourth edition of the Miami River Art Fair.

The Miami Chamber Orchestra began in the fall of 2014 when conductor Jorge Vazquez was invited to direct a concert that would raise money for the South Florida Haiti project, an initiative that served to provide fresh water to Bondeau, Haiti. Described by critics as a “virtuoso conductor,” Jorge Vazquez captivates musicians and audiences around the world for his “dynamic interpretations” and for “reclaiming the fervent musical intentions of composers.” He studied conducting with esteemed maestro Grzegorz Nowak, permanent associate conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and has served as his assistant in rehearsals, concerts, and recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sinfonia Varsovia. He has won first prize at international competitions in the United States and Mexico. He was awarded the first ever Miami Symphony Orchestra Conducting Fellowship by its Artistic Director, Eduardo Marturet. Jorge Vazquez has conducted orchestras in performances throughout The United States, Europe, and Mexico.
