PARK MINK-YU SOLO MIAMI EXHIBITION SEPTEMBER 1-30, 2016
Oriental spirit & Minimalism-concept to nonexistence A color used in Oriental painting doesn’t mean its noun for representing the color on the surface of a thing. Oriental colors express the symbolic meaning of the colors and a spirit aroused by sympathy of the creator. The color in the background of Park Minkyu’s art is the origin of the idea of Asians whose lives have adapted to the nature. The iron loops are arranged in regular intervals on the basis of the ground color. It begins to interchange between pure nature and humanity. It is a notion of ‘nothing’ which is ironic thought that having nothing is having everything. Naturally based on universal colors and the circular loops contained the condition of life or people create a mutual sympathy. That is the keyword of the tendency in Park MInkyu’s artworks. The tendency of Minimalism with a focus on the Oriental spirit is connected to the inaction in it. It looks at the world leisurely as a way of life rather than experience or intuition by the artist. Since his art is set in the naturalism, the circular loops may be forest or cities or even the relations of people. The regularly arranged loops are sensory area transcending reason, and a symbol for the body of the Oriental spirit to pursue harmony with nature. It is steps towards the absolute freedom of the spirit. - Park Jeongsu, Critic
