Dear Friends, As we inch our way out of the pandemic and back to all our favorite activities, it’s a time to be hopeful and even a little jubilant. There is nothing more jubilant than a kid in summer, and especially when learning and fun mix. The Teaching in Room 9 Summertime season has been going strong since early June. This free, on-air classroom bridges the gap between in-school and at-home learning. Families and caregivers can feel confident that kids are enriched this summer with lessons linked to educational standards and taught by certified local teachers. We shine a light on what makes this region unique and the robust art scene is one of them. Our prepandemic art collaboration, Such Sweet Thunder, in October 2019 with the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, Jazz St. Louis, and The Big Muddy Dance Company was honored at the St. Louis Arts Awards in May.

New, unique dramas continue to roll out, as evidenced by this month’s feature story on The Indian Doctor, and Masterpiece announced they will be producing seasons two and three of Sanditon, which I know has a vocal fan following. I hope you will watch! Nine PBS welcomes diverse cultures, races, and ethnicities in media, and starting July 8, we begin broadcasting (and livestreaming) The Indian Doctor. The new comedy-drama on Thursday nights follows a high-flying Delhi medical-school graduate, Dr. Prem Sharma (Sanjeev Bhaskar), and his haughty and disgruntled wife, Kamini (Ayesha Dharker).

riches and glamour. They find themselves residing in a small Welsh coal-mining village following the death of the village’s local doctor. Once in Wales, they quickly become embroiled in the lives of the villagers. While Prem strikes up new friendships and settles into life in the Valleys, Kamini wants them to leave as soon as possible.

A reviewer at PasteMagazine.com said you’re dazed into submission by its pure charm. “Period drama? Character-driven cuteness? Subtle (and occasionally not that subtle) ponderings on love, class, grief, race, ethnicity, and culture in a homogeneous, isolated, small-town setting? If you are into any of these things, The Indian Doctor might be your new favorite show,” said Amy Glynn.

The series has won three BAFTA Cymru (British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Wales) Awards, two for best director (fiction) and one for best costume design. The series originally aired on BBC One, which also produced a documentary called The Real Indian Doctors. The film revealed how immigrant doctors who arrived in Wales in the 1950s and '60s from the Indian subcontinent helped to change attitudes towards racism and immigration.

The comedy-drama is set in the 1960s. “One of the many delights in making the series is the soundtrack,” says Bhaskar. "I'm a big fan of the music of the time and as an ardent Elvis admirer, it was great to hear 'Devil in Disguise' playing in the background of episode three.” The original version of “Tainted Love” by Gloria Jones and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' “I Put a Spell on You” can also be heard. In season one, the storyline revolves around the seemingly friendly coal-mine manager, Richard Sharpe, and the dark secret that he has deliberately ignored safety warnings to further his own career. Evidence to this effect exists in the previous doctor's diaries, and Prem becomes determined to reveal the truth.

Ways to Watch

Prem faces a new adversary in season two: evangelist preacher Herbert Todd. When an outbreak of smallpox threatens to bring catastrophe to the village, Prem finds himself fighting prejudice and incompetence while he tries to win the hearts and minds of the villagers over the bull-headed Todd. Also, Prem nervously awaits the arrival of his dreaded mother-in-law, Pushpa. In season three, set three years after Prem and Kamini's arrival, they have become very much a part of the Trefelin community. But their lives and those of everyone in the village are about to change when the wild and rambunctious sons of the mine owner return to bring the first real taste of the swinging '60s to the small town.

Doc Martin Series Rebroadcast The original, funny, small-town-doctor story, Doc Martin, will be rebroadcast after The Indian Doctor on Thursday nights. The beloved series follows the celebrated London surgeon, Dr. Martin Ellingham, whose truculence and tactless manner cause mayhem in a small Cornish community.

After retraining as a general practitioner, he gets a job in the beautiful but sleepy village of Portwenn, replacing the deceased local doctor. But, his abrasive personality doesn’t exactly mesh with the pace of life in Cornwall.

Our Teaching in Room 9 Summertime educators are excited about the ways you can enrich your child’s learning through television. Created to support at-home learning, this free, on-air classroom offers two hours of literacy, math, science, and related arts instruction for kids in prekindergarten through third grade. It is broadcast weekdays on 9.1 from 11:30 am–1:30 pm. The Friday lineup is dedicated to science and is created in partnership with the Institute for School Partnership at Washington University in St. Louis. Teaching in Room 9 Summertime focuses on combating summer learning loss and centers on enrichment. The Nine PBS engagement and learning team cocreated weekly topics with teachers based on a summer camp theme.

Emily Gentemann, a fourth-grade teacher at Dewey International Studies, says the camp theme gives students “the feeling and sense of play even though they are learning the whole time.” What’s great about the series, she says, is the “access to a wide variety of content and material that encourage students to stay active and engaged in their learning.” Setting up a tent in the backyard, building a solar s'mores oven, cracking open a coconut, and interviewing friends about their pets are just a few of the things Gentemann has in store for her summer lesson plans. “I am having an absolute blast filming for the summer season!” she says.

World-class Science Instruction Since the first season of Teaching in Room 9, Nine PBS has teamed up with the Institute for School Partnership (ISP) at Washington University in St. Louis and its STEMpact program. ISP selects and works with science educators and provides instructional coaching for Teaching in Room 9 math teachers. The institute aims to improve equity and educational outcomes by connecting schools with world-class research through innovative programs and partnerships.

Teaching in Room 9 bridges the gap between inschool and at-home learning, says Pablo Ramos, a STEM elementary educator at Meramec Elementary School. Families can feel confident that their kids are “learning and understanding important content through quality lessons with certified teachers, right from the comfort of their own home,” he says, and topics are linked to standards that are commonly aligned through all grade levels. Students are also able to connect topics from Teaching in Room 9 to the culturally responsive PBS KIDS television series they are already familiar with, he says. “Teaching in Room 9 helps enrich student learning by reinforcing standards they learned during the school year and introducing topics that they may learn the next year.” "We know that children spend time in front of screens, and Teaching in Room 9 meets them where they are, in their homes, in the summer months,” says Melanie Turnage, an instructional coach at Wyland and Marion Elementary Schools. “I am excited about exploring science phenomena in the St. Louis region through the eyes of a child. Providing relatable content in the context of our city is a great way to be sure students feel connected to learning.”

Alcindor Named Moderator of Washington Week Yamiche Alcindor is the new moderator of Washington Week, the Peabody Award-winning weekly PBS news analysis series produced by WETA in Washington, DC. Alcindor is currently the White House correspondent for PBS NewsHour, a position she will retain. She is also a political contributor for NBC News and MSNBC and has worked as a reporter for USA Today and the New York Times.

PBS Short Film Festival 2021 Now entering its 10th year, the PBS Short Film Festival is a celebration of independent films and filmmaking. Each year, these digital shorts highlight a range of topics including love, religion, public policy, social justice, and more, amplifying diverse voices and stories from all walks of life. All 25 films will be made available on PBS platforms, YouTube, and social media, culminating in awards for the “Juried Prize” and “Official Selection.” The festival runs July 12–23.

Masterpiece Renews Sanditon

Coming Attractions

Voted one of the top 15 shows of 2020 in the U.S. by Vogue and premiering to wide critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, Sanditon, the fan-favorite drama based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel has been renewed for seasons two and three following its successful run in the U.S. on Masterpiece.

Muhammad Ali, a new four-part documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns, will air in September on Nine PBS. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, and power in the ring, and his charm, wit, and outspokenness outside of it.

After fans were left hanging in suspense by the first season’s finale and clamoring for more, the drama will continue to follow the high-spirited and independent heroine, Charlotte Heywood, as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon. Charlotte’s journey is one thread of an intricate tapestry of compelling stories full of intrigue, excitement, and romance. Against the backdrop of beautiful vistas, familiar faces return, and new inhabitants are introduced—all of whom will be having adventures as joyous and surprising as the seaside town itself.

At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and selfaffirmation.

Pathways to Work Level Up Youth Conference In 2020, Nine PBS became the new home of the Regional Youth Employment Coalition (RYEC), previously a part of Ready by 21. Coalition members and Nine PBS Engagement Manager Tanisha Joyce planned the 2021 Level Up Youth Conference, held virtually over three days this past May for more than 350 high school students.

Students attended sessions on careers in IT, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and construction trades, as well as a financial literacy session featuring experts from Bank of America. Sessions showcased the full spectrum of career experiences, hearing from students exploring the fields, apprentices, and midcareer individuals mentoring the next generation.

Nine PBS’s Community Impact Initiative Through American Graduate, Nine PBS has led local and national initiatives around workforce development since 2016, focusing on high-demand skilled careers that require some education after high school, but not a four-year degree. These jobs make up 30% of available jobs in our region, but 60% of companies in highdemand skilled sectors report a shortage of qualified applicants (State of the St. Louis Workforce, 2020).

Entering the initiative’s fourth phase, Nine PBS has chosen the new name, Pathways to Work, to reflect our focus on young and midcareer individuals and core pathways: manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and IT. The goal of this work is to expand the definition of success and economically empower our region.

Atypical River in Southeastern Missouri Challenges Paddlers August 10 will mark the 200th anniversary of Missouri’s entry as the 24th state to enter the United States. Nine PBS has told myriad stories about the state’s cultures, geographies, and industries. We continue these stories through Living St. Louis and feature-length specials. Back in 1988, we aired a special on whitewater paddling on the St. Francis River in southeastern Missouri. Down the St. Francis featured interviews with enthusiasts of the sport, which hold the annual Missouri Whitewater Championships, now in its 54th year, on the river. It’s a river that is atypical for this part of the country. With its granite rocks and trees, you might think you are on the banks of a river in Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado. It’s beautiful and large enough for whitewater kayaking and canoeing, but “it’s not a river for dawdlers,” said a paddler. It’s considered an excellent training river. When it rains, water drains off the St. Francois Mountains in the Ozarks into the river, which

can rise 10–25 feet. In fact, expert paddlers are said to have learned the sport on the St. Francis River. The Missouri Whitewater Championships is one of the largest races in the country. There are plenty gradients, drops, eddies, and rocks to provide competitors with variety. The participants must negotiate gates in consecutive order. The goal is to be “fast and clean,” with points deducted for touching poles and gates. The competition combines finesse and skill. Finishers mention the pride, accomplishment, exhilaration, and camaraderie of participating in the championships. Clinics are available to learn and practice maneuvers, like the low brace, forward sweep, and ferry. Safety is also a priority; paddlers learn fail-safe techniques and the kayak roll, a complete rollover maneuver that takes you from upright to capsized back to upright. All walks of life participate in the sport, from construction works to lawyers and nurses. “I have been doing it so long, it’s a part of me,” said one contestant. It’s a “love-hate thing,” said another.

Our Region’s Largest Classroom! A new season, based on the fun of summer camp, focuses on combating summer learning loss and centers on enrichment.

On Teaching in Room 9, a team of educators from across the region teach 30-minute classes in literacy, math, science, and the related arts for students in prekindergarten through third grade. The curriculum is informed by area education leaders and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
