Dear Friends, As we progress in our campaign to build our capacity for the future, we are reminded every day of the philanthropic gifts that have made it possible for us to serve the St. Louis region for nearly 60 years. We are in a new era of opportunities afforded by productive community collaborations and advancing technology, but, as it has been throughout our history, visionary philanthropy is what enables us to achieve our goals. Every contribution expresses belief in the value of independent public media and the important role we play in strengthening the communities we serve. We recently joined the St. Louis Zoo at the Gateway to Giving annual awards event to present the Giving Is Far Reaching award to the Dana Brown Charitable Trust. It was particularly significant for us to pay tribute to the philanthropic spirit of a man who not only contributed so much during his lifetime, but who also established a charitable trust that would enable us to expand in innovative ways far into the future. Dana Brown worked hard to rise above his humble beginnings. But his challenges gave him a deep understanding of what it means to be in need. When he finally became successful, he wanted to help others, particularly children. He became an actively engaged supporter of Channel 9 and the St. Louis Zoo, but he did more. By establishing the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, he assured that his support would extend beyond his lifetime and reach literally millions of children with opportunities for learning. In 1996, the Dana Brown Charitable Trust made a lead gift of $2 million to the capital campaign that made it possible for us to construct our current broadcast facility—the

Dana Brown Communications Center. In 2001, the Trust awarded us a challenge grant of almost $1.6 million to enhance service to children by supporting digital broadcasting and the Internet, enabling us to establish a dedicated 24/7 children’s digital channel. In 2010, the Trust awarded us a challenge grant in the amount of $1.4 million to finish an undeveloped space in our building as the Nine Center for Public Engagement—a multiplatform digital environment where we engage young people and adults in the stories and issues that shape our community. And in 2010, the Dana Brown Charitable Trust was recognized by PBS with its Leadership Award for Innovative Philanthropy. The remarkable legacy of Dana Brown tells an important story about philanthropy and the spirit of possibility. We honor that legacy as stewards of the public trust in our commitment to bring St. Louis together as we connect our region with the world. As a member of the Nine Network, you have demonstrated your support of our value to the St. Louis region. I encourage you make an additional contribution to our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign. With your help we can build our capacity to serve generations to come. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Funding for Productions That Elevate and Showcase Our Region

Igniting the Spirit of Possibility We have evolved into a multifaceted public media organization with proven potential to make a significant impact in the St. Louis region. This is the right time to assure that we have the capacity to move forward as one of the nation’s leading public service media organizations.

Capacity-Building Campaign When the Nine Network of Public Media embarked on a campaign to build capacity for the future, it was with the knowledge that nearly 60 years of service to the St. Louis region has been the result of forward thinking. Our visionary founders imagined what might be possible if opportunities for learning and exploration were available to all children and adults in our region. But their vision required the forward thinking of innovative leadership and the support of our community to make it happen. In recent years, the Nine Network has demonstrated to the nation that public media, long known for exceptional programming, has the ability and the opportunity to do more for communities across the country. Locally, our trusted position has enabled us to convene individuals and organizations in dialogue on important topics. Whether we are raising awareness and understanding of critical issues, shining a light on remarkable achievements, or telling our region’s stories, the Nine Network has taken public media to a new level of service. And it hasn’t stopped there. The Nine Network has made a commitment to initiatives that lead to measurable results. This is why we have set our sights on what our community can achieve in the important areas of education, healthcare, science and technology, energy and the environment, arts and culture. It is critical that we build and maintain the capacity to continue our work as an innovative and responsive organization equipped with state-ofthe-art technology in a facility that can serve as a center for community engagement and local productions. We are fortunate that Dana Brown was among our supporters. He was a forward-thinking philanthropist who understood the importance of investing in our future. Our building, much of our

digital technology, our 24/7 children’s channel, and our Nine Center for Public Engagement are the result of his vision and now are extending his legacy to future generations. The Dana Brown Communications Center now teems with the energy of a new era in public media. And the innovative Public Media Commons, now under construction, promises to become one of our nation’s most unique destinations We believe we can best serve our region by building our capacity to meet the future. When we look back on our progress, we realize that every success was the result of our ability to seize a challenge or opportunity that would make a positive difference in our community. The Nine Network of Pubic Media is a unique nonprofit organization, almost entirely funded by the community it serves, but empowered by a national system of public media organizations dedicated to serving our country. As a national leader, the Nine Network is making a difference, and in St. Louis we have been joined by hundreds of organizations to achieve great things for our region. Already, in our capacity-building campaign we have raised $20 million toward our $25 million goal. In addition to individual gifts and major contributions, we recently received an important grant of $200,000 from Newman’s Own Foundation to expand programs and productions that showcase and engage our region. We also received one of only six national matching grants of $50,000 from the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities.

We invite you to join our campaign to build the Nine Network’s capacity to help take our region forward.

Community of Supporters The Nine Network is engaged in a $25 million campaign, Igniting the Spirit of Possibility, to build our capacity for the future. Gifts to the campaign may include new bequests from donors who notify the Nine Network, in writing, of their plans. Knowledge of your legacy contribution would significantly advance our campaign and encourage support for the future of public media. It’s helpful, but not necessary, to make your name public. Please call Nancy Burchfield at 314-512-9024 for more information.

Nine Networking St. Louis Featured in National Special Tavis Smiley Reports focuses in March on the connection between the juvenile justice system and the dropout rate among American teens. For Tavis Smiley Reports: Education Under Arrest, broadcast Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. (and repeated Thursday, March 28 at 1:00 a.m.), journalist Smiley came to St. Louis in October 2012 to interview Judge Jimmie Edwards, principal of Innovative Concept Academy in the St. Louis Place neighborhood. The special looks at the efforts by educators, law enforcement professionals, judges, youth advocates and the at-risk teens themselves to end what has become known as “the school-to-prison pipeline” and takes a hard look at the consequences of “zero tolerance,” when minor infractions can escalate into jail time. Edwards believes the zero-tolerance policy is not the best route. “Locking up an 11-year-old in jail for any length of time doesn’t make sense for him, for his family and certainly not for his community,” says Judge Edwards. Tavis Smiley came to St. Louis in October for an upcoming special report about teens and prison.

Students from Gateway STEM High School respond enthusiastically during an exercise led by Nine Network’s Shelly Williams (not pictured). Their visit to the station was in conjunction with Nine’s American Graduate initiative.

Tavis Smiley Reports: Education Under Arrest also interviews experts in Washington state, Louisiana and California. The special is part of public media’s American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative to address the dropout crisis. Nine PBS is also airing another American Graduate-themed special in conjunction with Tavis Smiley Reports. At 8:00 p.m. on March 25 and 26 (repeated March 27 and 28 at 2:00 a.m.), 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School presents an intimate portrait of life for the first graduating class of Washington Metropolitan High School, a public school in Washington, D.C., where only 7 percent of students are deemed “proficient” in math and only 19 percent in reading. This four-hour special gives a firsthand view of what happens in a school that meets the needs of the most challenged students in new and sometimes non-traditional ways. Teachers and school leaders are shown dealing with the usual antics of teenagers and the changing tides of a fast-moving administration that is responding to pressures from outside partners, politicians and forces in the community.

American Graduates Thinking Ahead In January, the Nine Network welcomed 34 students from Gateway STEM High School, a St. Louis magnet school that is participating in a national StoryCorpsU college readiness pilot program. As part of the American Graduate initiative, the students met with Nine Network staff members to learn about the education, experience and responsibilities required for different positions at Nine, from television producer to graphic designer and video editor. Over two and a half hours, groups of students rotated through Nine’s building, hearing presentations and asking questions. They considered how storytelling is used on TV, online, and in marketing, and thought about how they could implement storytelling principles to encourage other teens to stay in school. A Nine camera crew followed the students, recording their experiences for use on the American Graduate website. Their morning wrapped up when they were invited to step onto a set in Nine’s main studio to Continued on page 8

Nine Turns Green At times the thunderous pounding and window-rattling thuds sounded as if the roof of the Nine Network’s building would splinter and collapse, but it was all for a good cause—in fact, a green one! Since spring 2012, Nine has been participating in the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association’s St. Louis Green Business Challenge. The commotion on the roof during the last week of January signaled loudly that our latest green project had begun. Brightergy contractors installed a 96-panel solar array that will generate approximately 33,500 kilowatthours per year, save $3,000 on Nine’s electric bill annually, and reduce our consumption of energy produced with fossil fuels one kilowatt-hour for every sun-produced kilowatt-hour. That’s not the only project on Nine’s list of environmentally friendly activities. The Green Team, comprised of staff members from every department, meets regularly to propose, research and implement station-wide practices that meet the requirements of the Green Business Challenge. Although Nine already had a recycling program, the Green Team increased the number of recycling bins and instituted co-mingled recycling. Meet the Board: Jeffrey Hall The children of Express Scripts Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Hall watch the Nine Network “all the time, every day,” says their dad. Inspired by their interest in Nine’s kids’ programming, and at the suggestion of Nine board member Pepe Prince Finn, Hall agreed to join the Nine Network’s board Jeffrey Hall of directors last year. Hall, who also serves on the board of the Regional Chamber & Growth Association, appreciates the diversity of Nine’s programming, saying, “Nine presents programs that just aren’t offered on other channels. It provides an outlet for programming that isn’t mainstream and that features different opinions.” The annual From Vienna New Year’s Day specials are a family “staple.” Hall also enjoys other classic music programs and Nine’s three-part series Homeland: Immigration in America. “Like other Nine offerings, the immigration initiative is a chance to go more in-depth on a topic instead of repeating the same sound bites over and over.” The Nine Network is a valuable part of the community, Hall says, because it helps the St. Louis region publicize local assets nationally and internationally. In turn, local viewers broaden their horizons because of access through Nine to a variety of national shows. “Nine represents an opportunity for St. Louis to get its identity out to the world, and for the rest of the world to sample the local flavor of St. Louis,” Hall says.

As part of the Legacy Nine committee, Cereghino helps plan strategies and activities, such as an annual event to recognize and thank Legacy Nine members. Cereghino himself is one of Legacy Nine’s founding members. “I’m very pleased that Legacy Nine membership has almost doubled since this committee began its work,” he says. About six times a year, Cereghino and his fellow committee members promote planned giving at events for long-term Nine members who might want to join Legacy Nine. “I describe Legacy Nine and explain why being a Legacy Nine member is a great and simple step,” says Cereghino. “I ask them to think about the commitment and contributions they’ve made to Nine over their lifetime, then ask, how will that commitment continue after they’re gone? The simple answer is, if they can leave some asset to Nine, that asset will continue to support the station indefinitely.” In addition to volunteering and being a member of Legacy Nine, Cereghino, a Glendale resident, has been a member of Nine for 20 years and is a contributor to the Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacity campaign. He also volunteers at his church, is a competitive ballroom dancer and is a member of the St. Louis Symphony chorus. Nine welcomes volunteers in many different capacities. Jeremy Piven stars in Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge.

The Art of Shopping Where would the aristocratic Crawley ladies of Downton Abbey shop when they visit London? Perhaps at Selfridges, the famous London department store founded in 1909. A new Masterpiece Classic, Mr. Selfridge dramatizes the real-life story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant and visionary American founder of the lavish store that revolutionized the modern shopping experience. The eight-week series starring Jeremy Piven (Entourage) begins Sunday, March 31 at 8:00 p.m. (It repeats Tuesdays at 2:00 a.m. beginning April 2.) “Adding Jeremy Piven to our legendary list of Masterpiece actors is a real treat,” says Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton. “Mr. Selfridge has all the qualities viewers expect from our programs—a riveting story, fabulous production values, a firstrate cast and now…shopping!” Fancy window displays, cosmetics counters, merchandise you can touch, nineNet.org

Nine Networking and other marketing breakthroughs had to start somewhere, and they sprang from the genius of Chicago native Selfridge, who combined guile, taste, boldness, the poise of a swindler and the seductive charm of a Casanova—qualities that spelled success but also trouble. Mr. Selfridge opens with the newly arrived Harry, fresh from success at Marshall Field’s in Chicago, checking the retail climate in London. Marshall Field pioneered the slogan, “The customer is always right.” But Harry finds that a demanding customer in England is likely to get thrown out of the store. Customers are expected to know what they want and, when presented with it, to make their purchase and leave. Furthermore, English ladies get their dresses from dressmakers who make house calls, and beauty products are a hush-hush subject, associated with actresses and prostitutes. But all of that is about to change. Channeling the consumer culture of the future, Harry invents a shopping experience that is a cross between theater and fantasy fulfillment.

Join us each month at the Missouri History Museum for free screenings of the Emmy Award-winning PBS film series Independent Lens, followed by audience-driven panel discussions hosted by Nine Network producer Jim Kirchherr.

Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines March 6, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Trace the fascinating evolution and legacy of the original comic book Amazon, Wonder Woman. From her creation in the 1940s to the superhero blockbusters of today, pop culture’s representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.

The Island President April 3, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed is confronting a problem greater than any world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. His is the most low-lying country in the world; a minor rise in sea level would literally erase it from the map.

The Revolutionary Optimists May 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Amlan Ganguly teaches the children of Kolkata’s slums to become leaders in improving their own community’s health and sanitation. Using street theater, dance, and data as their weapons, the children have cut malaria and diarrhea rates in half, increased polio vaccination rates, and turned garbage dumps into playing fields.

Love Free or Die

June 5, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Love Free or Die is about a man who has two defining passions that the world cannot reconcile: his love for God and for his partner Mark. The film is about church and state, love and marriage, faith and identity—and openly gay Bishop Eugene Robinson’s struggle to dispel the notion that God’s love has limits.

For more information, go to nineNet.org/communitycinema These films and more air every week on Independent Lens, Sundays at 10:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. These films are part of the national Women and Girls Lead initiative.

Presented by the Nine Network of Public Media and the Missouri History Museum, in collaboration with Independent Lens, ITVS and the Employees Community Fund of the Boeing Company.
