Nine PBS Magazine - March/April 2025 Issue

Dear Friends,

Happy 314 Day! Spring is special in St. Louis, especially in March when we celebrate two uniquely St. Louis holidays: 314 Day (March 14) and the Cardinals’ Opening Day (March 27).

As the region’s storyteller, we’re excited to partner with Greater St. Louis, Inc., and STLMade for 314 Day with a variety of unique St. Louis-focused stories.

Watch or stream a special episode of Living St. Louis on March 10, followed by a broadcast of our digital collaboration with Humans of St Louis. We’ll also feature St. Louis stories during our March membership drive, including Concrete Jungle Gym about St. Louis artist and City Museum creator, Bob Cassilly.

Speaking of local programming, we’re thrilled that our documentary Going Your Way—produced by Jim Kirchherr—will air nationally on PBS on Monday, March 31. We are grateful this collaboration with Oasis will be seen across the country and help people better understand how they can take an active role in end-of-life planning.

Spring also means events return to the Public Media Commons. We’re excited to kick off the first of three Storytime in the Commons events on Saturday, April 12, featuring the new, acclaimed PBS KIDS program Carl the Collector in honor of World Autism Month. Register now and learn more at ninepbs.org/events.

And the excitement will continue in May, when Antiques Roadshow (ARS) returns to St. Louis! We are excited to welcome ARS back on Tuesday, May 13. This is a really big deal: St. Louis is one of only five cities chosen for the show’s 2025 tour and 30th season, and it’s the first time they’ve been to St. Louis since 2018. You can learn more and enter the free ticket lottery up to March 24 at pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/tickets.

On behalf of all of us at Nine PBS, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we celebrate and share stories about the St. Louis region. Thank you for making us one of the most-watched PBS stations in the country!

Best,

We will be hosting our third annual 314 Day celebration on March 14. Founders of 314 Day, Terrell “Dip” Evans (left) and Tatum Polk (right), seen here with Amy, created 314 Day in 2006 to celebrate the city they love and help bring St. Louisans together.

Spring Edition of Storytime in the Commons

Join us, in partnership with St. Louis Public Library, for family time on Saturday, April 12, when we host a spring Storytime in the Commons, featuring PBS KIDS’s Carl the Collector . Storytimes are also planned for June 14 and September 6.

Carl the Collector follows the everyday adventures of Carl, a warm-hearted autistic raccoon, who pays extraordinarily close attention to detail and comes up with unique ideas that others might not consider. These traits have helped him amass his extensive collections—from autographs and bottle caps to fake mustaches, pet rocks, sweaters, and virtually everything in between—which comes in handy for solving problems around the neighborhood with his friends.

Common Sense Media named Carl the Collector (and Lyla in the Loop ) to its list of top five best kids' TV shows of 2024. Our spring storytime coincides with Autism Acceptance Month. Your attendance is an opportunity to raise awareness and advance inclusivity and connectedness throughout the community.

Registration opens one month before each event at ninepbs.org/events.

Watch Carl the Collector weekdays at 7:30 am on Nine PBS, 10 am on PBS KIDS, or stream on youtube.com/@PBSKIDS and pbskids.org.

What Do I Do with This?

Just in time to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, a new Nine PBS digital series debuts to raise awareness about the environmental impact of improperly disposing household waste.

Our planet is suffering from overconsumption, but there is a way to be more mindful about what to do with your unwanted stuff and, in turn, help heal the planet. This new digital series focuses on specific household items that you might commonly question whether to recycle, donate, throw away, or arrange for special disposal services. Host Brooke Butler will demystify the process and tackle electronics,

furniture, chemicals, fabrics, and more. Find it on Nine PBS’s YouTube channel, with digital shorts shared on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok.

The Earth Day movement started in the U.S. back in 1970. Each year, Earth Day is intended to drive a year of energy, enthusiasm, and commitment from individuals, businesses, and local and national government to create a new plan of action to help heal our planet. Be sure to attend the St. Louis Earth Day Festival in Forest Park on Sunday, April 27, from 11 am–5 pm.

This digital series is supported in part by Cass Information Systems, Inc., Graybar Foundation, and the Betsy & Thomas O. Patterson Foundation.

Race for Mayor: The St. Louis Citizens’ Agenda

Nine PBS and St. Louis Magazine have teamed up to cover the 2025 St. Louis City mayoral race, powered by voters and residents in the City of St. Louis.

Nine PBS Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube channels engaged area citizens and asked them what issues they wanted the candidates to discuss. This work culminated in a broadcast special in February. You can stream it on ninepbs.org or the PBS app.

Additional content will be shared on YouTube and across our social media channels throughout March and early April. The primary election for the St. Louis City mayor is March 4, with the general election on April 8.

Find election coverage and ongoing regional news under our new digital-first news banner, Nine PBS Reports. Learn more at ninepbs.org/ninepbsreports.

Nine PBS Reports is supported in part by the Betsy & Thomas O. Patterson Foundation.

Building a Stronger Community Together

Homegrown holiday 314 Day is a big, joyful celebration about showing love for our city. Held every year on March 14 (because of the city’s 314 area code), it’s a day packed with pride, community spirit, and everything that makes St. Louis unique. Terrell “Dip” Evans and Tatum Polk created 314 Day in 2006 to celebrate the city they love and help bring St. Louisans together.

Since its inception, 314 Day has evolved into a citywide movement, uniting residents and amplifying local pride through events, performances, and initiatives that honor the essence of St. Louis. 314 Day continues to serve as a rallying point for community empowerment and cultural appreciation.

It’s the perfect mix of fun, food, and feel-good moments, all wrapped up in hometown pride. Whether you were born and raised in St. Louis or just love the city, 314 Day is all about coming together to celebrate everything that makes it special.

Chelsey Farris, a freelance brand designer and illustrator from St. Louis, designed the official 2025 314 Day image at right.

A Celebration at Nine PBS

In partnership with the 314 Day Foundation and STLMade (an initiative of Greater St. Louis Inc.), Nine PBS will host a 314 Day celebration on Friday, March 14, from 6–8 pm, in its studio in Grand Center. Attendees will get to watch a special 314 Day episode of Living St. Louis, including profiles on Chelsey Farris, who was chosen as this year’s 314 Day designer after a metro-wide competition, STL Santos, the Spanish-speaking supporters' group for St. Louis CITY SC, and other "so St. Louis" segments.

These partnerships are important to us. Our stories and community engagement efforts are anchored to community needs. Our events and local content teams rely on partnerships, and the Nine PBS Early Learning Initiative now connects with more than 130 community partners, offering each partner a variety of support aligned with community priorities.

Why Civic Pride Matters

Part of our mission has always been to help our region flourish by instilling civic pride. When you’re proud of your town, you feel more connected to your neighbors. That sense of shared ownership creates a spirit of teamwork, where people look out for each other and work together to make their community the best it can be.

Civic pride also inspires people to get involved. Whether it’s volunteering, cleaning up a park, or casting a vote on Election Day, pride in your community motivates you to take action. There’s an economic side to it, too. Communities that radiate pride attract visitors, businesses, and even new residents. A lively, wellmaintained town or city sends a message: “This is a place worth investing in.”

And let’s not forget the small things that make a big difference. When people care about their surroundings, they’re more likely to keep public spaces clean and even add a little flair—planting flowers, painting murals, or supporting local art.

Civic pride also has a way of boosting morale. Living in a community you’re proud of feels good and it’s energizing. It can even have a ripple effect on mental health, making life just a little brighter for everyone.

Plus, when we celebrate what makes our community unique—our history, culture, and diversity—it creates a welcoming space where everyone feels they belong. It shows that our differences are strengths and part of what makes St. Louis special.

Finally, pride builds resilience. When tough times hit, a community with strong civic pride pulls together to overcome challenges. It’s that “we’ve got this” attitude that gets you through a storm—sometimes literally.

Civic pride isn’t just about waving flags or cheering at local parades (though those are great, too!). It’s about creating a community that thrives because its people care deeply about it. And that, in turn, inspires future generations to keep the spirit alive.

How Can You Celebrate 314 Day?

"So St. Louis" Series and Documentaries

Concrete Jungle Gym

This documentary had its premiere at the 2024 St. Louis International Film Festival. It’s the story of artist Bob Cassilly, who spent years saving and repurposing relics and treasures slated for demolition as cities across the Midwest practiced municipal disinvestment. The sculptor, who previously protected a Michelangelo masterpiece from destruction, transformed art, history, and junk into tunnels, slides, and caverns inside of an abandoned 10-story warehouse, which became the City Museum (pictured above), one of city's leading tourist attractions. It's codirected by Nine PBS’s Multimedia Producer Mike Gualdoni and Zach White. Watch live Friday, March 14, 9 pm or stream anytime on the PBS app under Nine PBS Specials.

Humans of St. Louis

You’ll be fascinated by the stories of everyday St. Louisans who are having an impact on our region, like the family behind El Chico Bakery, Cesar Cardo (pictured above), the owner of Club Viva, and others who are quietly making a difference. Meeting the Needs of Our Region’s Early Learners

Nine PBS began the Raymond H. Wittcoff Fellowship in 2021 to carry on the legacy of one of the station’s founders. As a real estate developer and philanthropist, Wittcoff believed from the very beginning that public television had a responsibility “not just to amuse us, tease us, and sell us things... [but] a channel with some loftier objectives.”

Over the past four years, the Wittcoff Fellows have represented that philosophy. During their engagement as part of the Nine PBS Impact Team, each Fellow makes a lasting impact by building and retaining connections with community partners across the St. Louis region, ranging from teachers to parents to other nonprofit organizations focused on education.

The Wittcoff Fellowship is part of the Nine PBS Early Learning Initiative, which supports children and families across the region with classes, events, partnerships, and high-quality Nine PBS resources that eliminate barriers to learning, especially in our priority neighborhoods of North St. Louis City, North St. Louis County, and East St. Louis. By focusing on early learners and preparing children for school, this initiative advances the St. Louis region by improving long-term economic and civic viability, creating a better community for all.

The Fellows' work supports the Early Learning Initiative's three primary goals: increasing literacy, increasing socialemotional skills, and increasing the ways in which caring adults can help.

The Wittcoff Fellows’ Impact in 2024

• Engaged with 36 partner organizations

• Reached nearly 1,900 children through our community hubs and Nine PBS on the Porch efforts

• Supported more than 1,700 caregivers and educators

• 96% of caregivers reported increased confidence in supporting the learning needs of their child(ren).

Nine PBS Fellows developed community hubs within partnering organizations that help connect young children to PBS KIDS® resources.

Working with teachers, community leaders, and other nonprofits, the Fellows have developed community hubs within partnering organizations that help connect young children to PBS KIDS® resources. These partners help connect families with free, high-quality Nine PBS resources.

Another fellowship partnership opportunity is the Nine PBS on the Porch program. It's intended for children without access to quality summer programs, because of barriers like cost and transportation, who risk “summer slide,” or losing ground, on their educational achievements made during the school year. Through Nine PBS on the Porch, Fellows and Nine PBS community partners connect with families throughout the summer to help children remain engaged in learning to maintain educational milestones and support at-home learning all summer long.

Leave a Lasting Legacy

We are honored by the generosity of donors, like the Wittcoff family, who support the Nine PBS Early Learning Initiative and the Raymond H. Wittcoff Fellowship. Preparing children for school advances the St. Louis region by improving its long-term economic and civic viability.

The Wittcoff family established this initiative through a bequest. Learn more about how you can support Nine PBS through a legacy gift, such as a will or planned gift, at ninepbs.org/plannedgiving.
