It’s Valentine’s Day. The day used to acknowledge those who are special to us. It’s a day to celebrate love with flowers, candy, romantic dates and well, sex. In honor of the holiday filled with love birds, cupid’s arrows and hook ups, the Niner Times conducted a representative sample survey to find out exactly what’s on the minds of UNC Charlotte students when it comes to sex. Of those surveyed, 59 percent were females and 41 percent were males. Females outnumber males at UNC Charlotte, 51 to 49 percent.

About a year ago, UNC Charlotte students Zane Kingery and Alexander Hutchins took a trip to Charleston, S.C. where they were introduced to the hobby of slacklining by some of their friends. Soon afterwards, Hutchins purchased his own slackline and started the long walk across the line to success. Slacklining is a recreational hobby that began with rock climbers in the 1970s. The climbers used some of their climbing materials to build a line similar to a tightrope in order to practice balance and improve core strength in order to become better climbers. Students walking past Fretwell or through the Lynch Hall and Wallis Hall courtyard may see a slackline strung up between two trees or other stationary objects. It looks very similar to a long seatbelt or a tie-down strap used to secure big objects on a trailer. Many people outside of rock climbing also enjoy slackling. People use a slackline as an advanced form of yoga as well as to perform various tricks. Some slackliners, such as Hutchins and Kingery, are still just beginners. “It took me about a day to stand up and a few weeks to walk across the line,” said Kingery. Some slackliners are able to perform various tricks and dance routines while balancing on a slackline. Gibbon, a brand of slackline, hosts competitions for men and women who are interested in displaying their slacklining abilities. Hutchins hopes to attend one of these competitions one day. When discussing slacklining’s relationship to other sports, Hutchins says, “You can’t really relate slacklining to other sports unless you consider rock climbing.” Hutchins and Kingery generally slackline about once a week and challenge themselves by making the line longer which decreases the tension and making it much harder to walk across. They also enjoy trying things such as tossing a Frisbee to one another while balancing on the line. Hutchins wants to purchase what is known as a jibline, which has more of a

When you think of Valentine’s day, you think of hearts, red, love, balloons, chocolate, champagne, kisses etc. Being a very visual holiday, at least three of those listed probably come to mind. Usually, a girl will receive a heart shaped box of assorted chocolates with a card, balloons and flowers. She’ll be taken out to dinner with a romantic movie to follow. All of that is really thoughtful and really sweet, but there are alternatives to making your girl happy rather than the cookie cutter Valentine’s day. If your girl has a very cultural yet expensive palate (think Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl), opt for getting her a box of French Macarons. Macarons are a buttercream meringue like filling sandwiched between two “cookies.” They are quite small, six will probably do, and they come in various colors and flavors. I know what you’re probably thinking. Where am I supposed to buy these? Easy. Amélie’s French Bakery in NoDa sells various flavors of them individually. If you’re skeptical about not enough variety in your choice, then just get her an assortment of French pastries-who doesn’t love choices? If your of age, top the evening with a bottle of champagne. Approved increases by university Graphic by Eden Creamer
Ciera Choate NEWS@NINERONLINE.COM
This past Friday the UNC Board of Governors approved an average tuition increase of 8.8 percent across all public universities in North Carolina. Some universities planned for a larger increase for the 2012-13 school year, but UNC system President Tom Ross urged for the tuition increases to be capped at 10 percent. UNC Charlotte originally approved a 6.5 percent increase, but at the meeting the increase was raised to a 7.8 percent increase for in-state students and to a 6.8 percent increase for out-of-state students. This is in addition to the increase of $106 in student fees, which will be implemented for
the fall 2012 semester. During the hearing for the tuition increases many students gathered to protest, but of the 100 students that protested only one was arrested. UNC Pembroke had the lowest increase with a 4.3 percent increase for in-state students and a 1.4 percent increase for out-ofstate students. The two univeristies with the highest increase were Western Carolina University and Winston-Salem University with a 9.9 percent increase for in-state students. Western Carolina approved a 3.5 percent increase for out-of-state students, and Winston- Salem approved a 3.6 percent increase for out-of-state students.

trampoline feel to it. The increased elasticity allows slackliners to jump and perform stunts on it. Hutchins and Kingery have two friends who join them when they slackline. Steadily, the numbers are increasing as people become more and more interested in slacklining. Although not currently a student organization, Hutchins hopes to start one soon. “I’ve thought about putting flyers up,” said Hutchins. “I think people should definitely come out and try it and a lot of times when we are out here doing it. People will just walk up and ask us what we are doing.” Slacklining is a craze that is becoming apparent in various North Carolina institutions. Hutchins and Kingery know students who slackline at Appalachian State University in Boone. Another UNC Charlotte student mentioned seeing East Carolina University students stringing up slacklines over a body of water at Greensprings Park in Greenville, N.C.

SEX from p.1 steadily in all my first year seminar classes, it’s almost always between 20 to 30 percent of first year students say they have not had sex,” said campus health education specialist Leslie Robinson. Some students are waiting because of religious beliefs, but other want to wait for the right person. Other survey respondents claimed to be waiting until marriage to have sex. Psychology major Olivia Stott’s reasons are personal. “If a guy I am interested in really loves me then he will be willing to wait until marriage. If he can’t wait, then he doesn’t value me enough as a person, and I would find someone who actually values me as a person,” said Stott. One of the questions students were asked to respond to involved their definition of sex. An overwhelming majority, 93 percent, said they considered sex to have taken place only if there was vaginal penetration. Three percent of survey takers claim that oral and/or anal penetration is considered sex to them. The remaining three percent understand sex to be defined as mutual nudity or touching and groping another person. “You also have to look at that as what is their definition of sex, because a lot of people might have had oral sex, which I would consider to be sex, but they may still consider themselves to be virgins,” said Robinson.
Let’s get it on
The 79 percent of 49ers who aren’t abstinent are having sex on a regular basis. The survey shows that 64 percent of students have sex at least once a month. The most popular response, at 26 percent, was a couple times a month. Five students even said they have sex every day. One of the factors that can greatly determine the frequency of intercourse for students is whether they are in a monogamous relationship. Forty-four percent of respondents said they were in a committed relationship with another person. These students were more likely to say they had sex more often. About 16 percent of survey takers claim
to have only had sexual intercourse with one person. The average number of sexual partners for UNC Charlotte students surveyed is five. On the more promiscuous side, one male student claims to have slept with upwards of 45 people, 30 of which were one night stands. On the topic of one night stands, 21 percent of 49ers who took the survey claim to have had what Google dictionary defines as “a brief sexual encounter lasting only for a single night.” The reasons young people have one night stands differ for from person to person, and there has been scientific research done on the subject. One such study done by Binghamton University in New York identified the DRD4 gene that could determine whether someone has a greater propensity to engage in promiscuous sexual activity. A study, conducted by Durham University in the United Kingdom, shows that women have adapted more negatively than men to one night stands. In theory the feminist revolution should make females feel more empowered by casual sex, but overall it makes them feel more taken advantage of.
Don’t be silly, wrap your willy
The most alarming statistic uncovered by the survey was the 14 percent of students who rarely or never practice safe sex. “Alcohol or drug use greatly decreases the likelihood they would use protection. Also if they are in a heterosexual relationship a lot of times the college age women are on a birth control pill, so they think that if they can’t get pregnant, why use condoms,” said Robinson. According to FactsonTap, a program by the Phoenix House rehabilitation center, up to 70 percent of college students admit to having sex primarily because they were under the influence of alcohol, or having sex they wouldn’t have had if they were sober. An even more concerning statistic on the UNC Charlotte campus is that only five students out of the 163 who responded to the question admitted to ever having a sexual transmitted infection. According to previous research it is un-

likely these numbers are correct. One in four people has a sexually transmitted disease by the time they turn 25. Robinson explains that even if a survey is anonymous or confidential, students could be afraid that they might be exposed and they think that makes them less attractive to the college community. The dangers in denying your STI status or believing it couldn’t happen to you could be life threatening. There’s an increased risk of spreading an infection you might not even know you have. “Eighty percent of the time Chlamydia doesn’t have any symptoms at all. So if you’ve had unprotected sex you could have chlamdyia and not know it,” said Robinson
Take advantage of resources
Whether you are waiting for marriage to have sex or enjoy a more relaxed moral code that includes casual sex, there are ways to ensure that you protect yourself and your partner(s). “We call it safer sex, because there is no safe sex,” said Robinson.
The Student Health Center offers everything a student would need to maintain their sexual health, including free condoms. As long as you are a student here, you can receive free testing as well. The Student Health Center provides free HIV and syphilis testing on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of every month, provided by Carolina Cares. There’s no cost for a consultation about different types of contraception. The health center also offers female students a wellwoman exam. The exam may include a pap smear, a pelvic exam, as well as a gonorrhea and chlamydia screening. All of these services are offered to students at little to no charge, no matter what insurance you have. If you do have a sexually transmitted infection, the Student Health Center partners with sexual education specialists and the counseling center on campus. “We don’t just want to treat the physical symptoms; we want to treat the emotional and psychological aspects of the virus. It’s like a three-fold approach,” said Robinson.

Valentine’s Day. The time for lovers to grow closer and all those single kids to complain about how much they h a t e the person they are crushing on for not loving them. Chocolate, passion, ice cream and depression fills the air in the early part of February and for us freshman, this is our first collegiate Valentine’s Day. What do you do with a new mate or with friends to forget the fact that you are alone? On a campus of a little over 25,000 people, surely there is someone for everyone out there and he or she may be right in front of you. People complain all the time about being single but I have yet to find anything wrong with it. Yet a single person has opportunities to explore options and go on dates and better themselves through mistakes and triumphs. Learning that not every relationship works out is a good lesson to learn. If you’re single, get a group of your other single friends and go out for dinner. Rent sappy movies and buy lots of junk food. Loneliness unites the single folk so have a blast with some people that you have probably been friend-zoned by. If you are happily in a relationship then there is a lot of pressure and questions. How much is too much? What should we do? These and more can be answered with some background information. Go out to dinner at a sit-down restaurant. Try different accents each time the server comes and keep changing each other’s names. It’s a fun way to be goofy and have fun and maybe avoid the usual candle-lit dinner. Walk the campus and take pictures at all spots you see fit. Go explore new places you don’t know that well and keep the conversation going the whole time. Learn more about each other and make as many funny faces as possible in the pictures. My favorite idea yet; drive into Uptown and find a super random parking spot in a restaurant parking lot or a meter or a
Maurii Davenport

parking deck and leave your phones in the car. This is another one that you need to bring your camera along. See all the sites of Uptown and go into as many towers as you can. See what buildings you can get the highest in. Go into some hotels and do your best to act very posh and as if you belong there. Ask people on the street to take pictures of you in the popular spots. Chronicle the photos and within the days after, print them and make a collage together. This is a date that is active for a few days and then when you are done you will have something to remember it by other than the added calories from a box of chocolates. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be the exact plot from a Lifetime movie. You’re young. Keep it fun and upbeat and not too serious. Guys, buy the girl some simple earrings or necklace, nothing flashy but one that represents her personality. Girls, buy your guy a new pocketknife or a nice cigar. Something small and nifty to remind him that he is a man and you’re glad that he’s your man. So 49ers find some love and have a good Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is typically for couples, old and new, to show their love through material goodies. There was once a time where these gifts were fairly simple, a thoughtful card, stuffed bear and a collection of chocolates stored in a heart- shaped box. Oh, how times have changed. iPods, expensive clothing and jewelry have claimed their spots as the modern day “V-day” gift but is it really wise to do so? Yes, if you’ve been married for the better part of a decade, you’re entitled to give your darling whatever your heart desires. It is a promising relationship, so there is sufficient room for the larger gifts. College relationships can occasionally have a similar outcome, but it is seldom that you see this happen. Electronics should be out, and a nice dinner is in. Although years do not always determine the depth of the love between two people, realize where you stand and pamper your partner accordingly. You also have to consider your personal comfort level with gift exchanges. Go after what you would feel at ease with receiving from someone else. In a relationship that is just beginning, unwrapping an outfit priced at $200 would not make most people jump for joy, but more likely jump out the window. A casual conversation of your Valentine’s Daysexpectations would be ideal. Trading a large gift can also cause issues that did not occur initially. If you buy your lover a pricey, gold watch and they have decided you’re only worth a Wal-Mart card and a “Much Love” signature, I think it’s safe to say your shopping wasn’t a clever choice on your part. Stereotypical Valentine’s Day gifts work just as well, and as cliché as it may sound, the thought should really be the only thing that matters. As a wise man once told me, “If you were to break up on the fifteenth, and you want your gift back, bay you spent too much.” I’d say that is a resonable quote to go by.

1. “Fool for Love” by Sandy Rogers This song got it’s time on the spotlight thanks to a spot on the 1992 “Reservoir Dogs” soundtrack. Country singers just don’t make them like this anymore. 2. “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston Perhaps Houston’s most well known song. Her tragic death will more than likely bring the inevitable spike in sales for all of her music, but this song will remain timeless for decades to come. 3. “Saw Red” by Sublime Feat. Gwen Stefani This song was released in 1994 before Sublime or No Doubt were known by much of anyone outside of the Southern Cal. music scene. Lead singer Brad Nowell dated Stefani for a time before making this song. 4. “All I Want is You” by Barry Louis Polisar Once you get past the corniness of this song, featured on the “Juno” soundtrack, you realize it’s just great feel good music. It also kind of makes you want to square dance. 5. “You Got Me” by The Roots Feat. Erykah Badu This track tells the story of a man and woman that met in France while the man was on tour. They bring their relationship back to The Roots’ hometown of Philadelphia. 6. “I Hate the Way You Love” by The Kills With its distorted guitar and anti-Valentine’s Day lyrics, the song is a perfect representation of a typical Kills song. 7. “The Littlest Things” by Lily Allen Of all the songs slamming her ex in her debut album, this one takes a nostalgic look back at a relationship that has run its course. 8. “Ms. Fat Booty” by Mos Def What would a list of Valentine’s songs be without a song titled “Ms. Fat Booty?” Not the generic B.S. rap song that it sounds like. 9. “Wild Young Hearts” by The Noisettes This track talks about the dumb things people do for love when they’re young. Everyone makes mistakes in the name of the opposite sex, but that’s just how we learn. 10. “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles This song was actually written as a rebellion against Bareilles’ record company when they asked for a generic pop hit. 11. “It Takes a Muscle” by M.I.A. It’s easy to get lost in this song, especially listening to M.I.A.’s seemingly helium-induced voice through the chorus. The dreamy song is a perfect example of her choice to sing as much as she raps on her latest album. 12. “Hot Summer Night” by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals This song, about a significant other heating up a cold winter night, goes right along with a holiday based on love placed in the middle of February.
13. “Hey Mama” by Kanye West Don’t forget about the other special woman in your life on this Valentine’s Day. 14. “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum If you strip this ode to the drunk, dial down to the roots and forget about the rest, it’s still a great song. 15. “Always Be My Baby” by Mariah Carey This is far from being a song I truly enjoy, but I always know that if I want to make my girlfriend happy, this song will never let me down. 16. “Back to Black” Amy Winehouse Yes, I am not ashamed to include a few break up songs on my Valentine’s list. Not everyone has someone to spend this day with, and nothing helps get over the gag reflex of watching everyone else’s lovefest than some good soul searching music. 17. “Son of a Preacher Man” by Etta James You can’t listen to this song and not just want to dance. It’s a classic that will probably live forever. 18. “Yellow Sun” by The Raconteurs Everyone’s been there at some point. In love with someone who doesn’t love you back, or they might not even know about your feelings. This song covers a mix of both predicaments. 19. “Head Over Feet” by Alanis Morrisette While Morrisette is usually blasting men who have spurned her throughout this album, she takes a turn on this song. However, she still includes the lyric “It’s all your fault.” Classic Alanis. 20. “It’s True That We Love One Another” by The White Stripes The song’s title seems to play with the much-talked-about relationship between Jack White and his drummer, Meg. 21. “Baby I’m Afraid” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs From their debut album, “Fever To Tell,” this song showcases Karen O as she talks someone just as damaged as her into giving love one more try. 22. “’03 Bonnie and Clyde” by Jay Z & Beyonce The super couple made their unstoppable relationship very public with this one. There’s nothing too complex here, just plain feel good stuff. 23. “Everlasting Love” by The Black Keys This song took a turn from what Black Keys fans had been used to. Lead singer Dan Auerbach’s voice is about two notes too high, but somehow it really works. 24. “Time of Your Life” by Little Brother Feat. Carlitta Durano This song is about that feeling when you get your paycheck and you just can’t wait to spend it on a night of fun with your special someone. Wining and dining at it’s finest. 25. “Babygirl” by Anthony Green Anthony Green’s newest release“Beautiful Things” proves this vocalist has come a long way since his screamo days of Saosin.
26. “Will You Return” by The Avett Brothers When this North Carolina-based folk group wrote “Will You Return,” they made one of the catchiest tracks in their discography with a youthful motif of love and indecision. 27. “All The Small Things” by Blink 182 There is a reason this song this song is still known as one of the pop punk group’s signature songs. “All the Small Things” is surprisingly romantic, accessible and above all else- fun. 28. “The Scientist” by Coldplay The potent combination of Chris Martin’s falsetto voice and simplistic piano tempo makes “The Scientist” one of the band’s greatest ballads and one of the greatest ballads in general. 29. “A Real Love Song” by Erika Blatnik This once common frequenter of the Charlotte music scene balances bold force and emotional vulnerability in ways that others just can’t. 30. “Everlong” by Foo Fighters “Everlong” features all the heart and force you’d expect from Foo Fighters. 31. “Slide” by The Goo Goo Dolls With the upbeat guitar strums and romantic lyrics, it may seem strange that this song is actually about a young couple contemplating an abortion. 32. “Good Feeling” by Violent Femmes From Violent Femmes’ self-titled album, “Good Feeling” is a cult classic written by high school kids in the mideighties. It’s also Marshal and Lily’s song. 33. “Dig” by Incubus The second single released from the alternative rock band’s sixth studio album, “Dig” lyrically counters the conditional aspects of life with unconditional love perfectly. 34. “23” by Jimmy Eat World Arguably Jimmy Eat World’s best song, “23” is a contemplative song about life, the search for love and ultimately turning 23. 35. “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane The third commercial single from the British new wave band, “Somewhere Only We Know” is beautifully layered and lyrically ambiguous. This piano rock song will seems to tell a different story through each listen. 36. “Everything” by Lifehouse Like a lot of great love songs by semi-Christian bands like Switchfoot or Lifehouse, it can be hard to distinguish whether the song is a love song or a worship song. “Everything” is no exception. 37. “Somewhere Out There” by Our Lady Peace This track was the most successful single from one of the most successful albums of one of the most beloved pop rock groups from the 90’s. Our Lady Peace managed to create one of the group’s most mainstream love songs with the uniqueness that you’d find on any of the band’s albums.
38. “Alive with the Glory of Love” by Say Anything Full of just as much angst as heart, “Alive with the Glory of Love” is a semibiographical ballad about two Jews who fell in love during the holocaust. 39. “Spoils of War” by Sugar Glyder Expertly layered with ambient guitar strumming and lead singer Daniel Howie’s stretched vocals, “Spoils of War” brought the Charlotte-rooted band’s debut album to an anthemic conclusion. 40. “Only Hope” by Switchfoot Before it was artificially covered by Mandy Moore in “A Walk to Remember,” “Only Hope” was one of Switchfoot’s better-known songs for its confessional lyrics and intoxicating candor. 41. “Blinded” by Third Eye Blind Third Eye Blind’s last charting single is highly sing-along-able and an energyfilled wonder to see performed live. 42. “With Or Without You” by U2 A few of you might remember “With Or Without You” as the first single off of the band’s most critically acclaimed album. The rest of you probably remember it as Ross and Rachel’s song. 43. “Goodnight Elisabeth” by Counting Crows Almost every Counting Crows song reads like just another reason why it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to date Adam Duritz. While the song isn’t exactly a love ballad, it paints a romantic, intimate picture. 44.“I Go Blind” by Hootie and the Blowfish What you might not know is that this is actually a cover of a Canadian alt rock band 54-40. “I Go Blind” is a must-have on your Valentine’s playlist regardless of which version you prefer. 45. “Anyone Else But You” by The Moldy Peaches Quirky, simple and romantic, this anti-folk duet always finds a way to burrow into your head. “Anyone Else But You” was also covered by Michael Cera And Ellen Page in the iconic conclusion of the 2007 indie hit- Juno. 46. “You Belong To Me” by The 88 It’s true, The 88 are “The Wiggles of wedding bands.” And “You Belong to Me” is one of their best. 47. “Pachuca Sunrise” by Minus the Bear Minus the Bear always has a way of making listeners feel like they’re in the song rather than just listening to it. The Seattle-based indie group will be playing later this month at Tremont. 48. “Pictures of You” by The Last Goodnight The pop rock band’s first single from the debut album will certainly add a Eve 6-meets- Maroon 5 pop sensibility to your Valentine’s playlist. 49. “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” by The Smiths Captivating and haunting, this classic Smiths track appears on my iPod in about six different versions.

Whitney Houston passes away at 48

The news came Saturday evening that Whitney Houston had passed away at the Beverly Hilton shortly before she was set to attend a Grammy Awards gala. Immediately, fans of American singer-actress-model took the interweb to express their gratitude to Houston for sharing her talents about half an hour before the press broke the news. Houston was the most awarded female performer of all time, winning a total of 415 career awards including two Emmy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, six Grammy Awards and 22 American Music Awards. According to the Los Angeles Times, investigators are continuing to analyze Houston’s body. Houston’s long and inspiring career peaked in the mid 80’s to the late 90’s. When the news came Saturday night, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News all broke away from their regular scheduled programming to show coverage of Houston’s passing. MTV and VH1 also aired a mixture of Houston’s classic musical performances and news updates. Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown performed in Mississippi mere hours after Houston’s death. The audience reportedly witnessed Brown blow kisses skyward, saying “I love you Whitney” throughout the concert. It’s true that Houston had a long, troubled history with drugs (marijuana and cocaine among others) and alcohol
which correlated with plummeting record sales. Although it is unknown what Houston was doing leading up to her death, investigators have found no reason to believe drugs or alcohol were involved. One of Houston’s bodyguards founds Houston cold and with her head under water in her bathtub on Saturday. Currently, investigators are exploring the possibility of a simple drowning as the cause. Musicians like Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Celine Dion owe a great deal of debt to the Queen of Pop who either laid the foundation for their career or revived it. In fact when singers Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey debuted, many listeners thought their music to be that of Houston. Both Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan immediately agreed to do a tribute to the star at the 54th annual Grammy Awards which aired the following night. Hudson has long cited Whitney Huston as an inspiration. And Houston’s musical career began when she performed backup for Chaka Khan in her teens. Whitney Houston not only redefined what it meant to be a female artist in America, but she inspired many of the most talented current female artist in the industry.
Whitney Houston Career highlights:
-1985 Debut album “Whitney Houston” is released with several hits -1987 Sophomore album “Whitney” is released -1990 Third album “I’m Your Baby Tonight” is released -1992 Marries R&B singer Bobby Brown; stars in “The Bodyguard” -1993 Houston becomes the highest earning female entertainer - 1996 Stars in the movie “The Preacher’s Wife” -1999 Becomes the top-selling R&B female artist of the century -2001 Signs biggest record deal in music history with Arista/BMG, worth $100 million -2002 Releases “Just Whitney” -2009 Releases comeback album “I Look to You” -2012 Finishes work on film “Sparkle,” which focuses on talented musicians whose lives are ruined by addiction Source: whitneyhouson.com
The 5 best guy flicks for your sweetheart
MCT Campus Gary Thompson
P H I L A D E L P H I A D A I LY N E W S
‘Tis nearly Valentine’s Day, fellas, when you’re expected to sit down with your gal to see “The Vow,” or something like it. Something very dangerous to your relationship, your self-esteem. Starring someone like Channing Tatum- bigger, better-looking, unafraid of commitment, supplied by screenwriters with an endless supply of cute things to say and do. In “The Vow” Tatum asks his girlfriend to move in with him by spelling out the question in the blueberries he places next to the pancakes he’s just made for her. See what I mean? You cannot compete with that. And yet you do owe her that flick. The trick is to find something you both find rewarding. Something with true love, and true grit. So here are the five most guy-friendly romantic movies you can watch. 5. “Shaun of the Dead.” Yes, it’s a zombie movie, but the zombies are really a backdrop for the story of a backsliding boyfriend trying to win back the girl he doesn’t deserve. And Simon Pegg is not Channing Tatum. 4. Anything by Ron Shelton. He’s known as a guy who makes movies about sports, but he really makes movies about love and sex _ “Bull Durham,” “Tin Cup,” “White Men Can’t Jump.” 3. “Say Anything.” You have to have writer-director Cameron Crowe on this list. He’s popular with both genders because he plays fair with male and female characters. “Jerry Maguire” would work, or even “Singles,” but we need something here for the teen demo. 2. “Die Hard.” Why does Bruce Willis kill every member of a global assortment of terrorists who take over an office tower? For love, of course. 1. “The Terminator.” Still James Cameron’s greatest love story, with apologies to “Titanic.” Guy travels through time to save the woman who will give birth to the man who will save the world from cyborgs, and ensures that she does by actually fathering the child. Take that, Nicholas Sparks.
CAB hosts ‘Jingle Off’ competition Anna Leatherman

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) holds numerous events on campus for students and facility alike. CAB already has over 60 events planned for this semester alone. The newest event on campus that has CAB staff excited is a Jingle Off competition. The idea was thought up by CAB’s Marketing and Publicity Crew Chief, Jacques Chappell. A jingle is a catchy tune that serves as an advertisement for a company or organization. CAB’s hope is to find a jingle they can use to represent their organization. The contestants are asked to create a jingle that portrays what CAB is and how they are involved on campus. CAB’s

president Leana Zona hopes that the jingle will help actively promote and raise student involvement within CAB. Anyone can enter the competition; all you have to do is create a jingle, then upload it to CABs website, cab.uncc.edujingleoff. The contestants are encouraged to be as creative as possible. CAB Marketing and Publicity Director, Kendall Allan, advises them to just have fun. Submission started Friday Feb. 3 and ends Wednesday Feb. 15. Once the submission time closes, the jingles will be uploaded to the CAB Facebook page where they will be voted on by the students of UNC Charlotte. Voting will take place on Feb. 16 and 17. The winner of the Jingle Off will receive an iPad 2 and their jingle will be used as the CAB theme song. There will also be a small prize for the runner up but that prize has not yet been decided. The members of CAB feel that the Jingle Off will be a huge success. “It’s so rewarding to see the same growth I have experienced in others that I work with. The best thing about CAB is giving back and making campus life fun," said Zona. If you have musical talent or if you really want an iPad 2; give writing a jingle a shot. Who knows, you might actually be good at it. If you’re not going to enter the competition make sure you go to the CAB Facebook page and like your favorite jingle. The one with the most likes will get the prize.

WE WANT TO KNOW HAVE ANY PARTICULARLY THRIFTY WAYS OF SPENDING VALENTINE’S DAY? EMAIL YOUR PLANS TO LIFESTYLE@NINERONLINE.COM CAMPUS TREND ALERT
Frugal plans for
Not the typical Valentine? Haley Twist LIFESTYLE@NINERONLINE.COM
Every year when Valentine’s Day comes around and I hear the plans of many girls on campus they always seem to say the same thing about their outfit of choice for their big plans: a red dress. And while I believe a stunning red dress is a fun must-have in every wardrobe, not everyone is big on sticking with this single piece for Valentine’s Day. I’m not even a big fan of dresses and usually opt for a pair of pants instead. So what are the options for those of us out there who want to dress up for our Valentine’s day plans but don’t want to stick with one cut or color of choice? For the not-so-typical Valentines there are discoveries to be made. We don’t want to look like we normally do with our day-to-day clothes, but we also don’t want to go over the top with a monotone gown. So what are the options? After looking through racks and racks of clothing in stores and browsing online for inspiration I have realized that there are so many options for those of us who tend to stay away from dresses. Keeping my style in mind I have put together three basic outfit ideas that I would love to wear on my Valentine’s Day night out. They might sound appealing to some, but if they don’t suit the interests of everyone I assure you that if you get creative and bold you will find something worth trying. Outfit #1: Semi-casual For this outfit I would pair black leggings with black booties, a white tank top or t-shirt and a long cardigan. This look is comfortable yet stylish and can be worn at basically any type of restaurant in the University area. It has just the right mix of casual and fancy, and can be made even fancier with a bold, chunky necklace and a few bracelets. The whole look is super sleek. Outfit #2: Casual Whether you are hanging out with the girlfriends or going on a laid-back date this Valentine’s Day, you are going to need a casual option. For this look I would wear a white airy shirt with a darker-colored scarf and pair these with jeans that cuff on the bottom and don’t quite reach your feet. Jeans like these look great with short boots or even flats. If it’s a chilly evening try a brown or taupe leather jacket instead of the standard black. Outfit #3: Formal Going out for a fancy dinner doesn’t always mean you can’t opt out of wearing a dress. For this look I would go with taupe or light brown flared dress pants with a light, breathable black blouse or sweater. I love pairing black with brown and it creates a sophisticated look that is sure to turn heads. The flared pant legs, when paired with wedges or heels, elongates legs and gives the appearance of complete confidence.
Valentine’s Day Tired of spending the big bucks on your Valentine? Believe it or not there are some cheap yet creative alternatives. Tricia Bangit TBANGIT@UNCC.EDU
It’s no secret that Valentine’s Day is a consumerist holiday that encourages us to buy Hallmark cards and blow large amounts of money on a dinner for two. If any restaurant thinks I’m spending $150 on a dinner for my significant other and I, the joke is on them. I’d rather learn to make my own fondue or go to a more affordable restaurant. Here are a few ideas appropriate for a Valentine’s dinner date on a budget:
For couples with a sweet tooth
With an assortment of pastries and sandwiches, adorable mismatched furniture and romantic French music, Amelie’s is a great spot to take your date for Valentine’s day. This place gets extra points for being open 24 hours a day, which is great considering that they almost always seem to be busy. Even if you decide to eat somewhere else for your special date, you can order a personalized éclair to “éclair your love” for that cherished person.
For guys who love quirky girls
Take your date to Ikea. If you tell me that you’ve seen “500 Days of Summer” and haven’t once thought about frolicking around that maze of a store with the person you’re enamored with, I’m going to assume
you’re lying. In the past Ikea has done special Valentine’s Day dinner menus, but it looks like the Charlotte location won’t be participating this year. Even without the special menu Ikea still has delicious offerings that include a spongy, cream-filled cream cake for $1.49 and herb-crusted fish for $4.99.
What do Niners think of the big day?
For couples who want to feel fancy Okay, Good Food on Montford isn’t the cheapest place to eat, but with a menu that has such a wide variety of plates, it’s hard to resist. The less expensive small plates are served tapas-style. While the cheapest small plates go for $6, the Prince Edward Island Mussels are worth the $9 and can be shared by two people. Another fun item to share is the American farmhouse cheese plate, which comes wonderfully paired with truffle chutney and honeycomb. Two-three small plates per person can easily fill you up.
Lauren Gulley “I’ve never had a Valentine so I dont expect anything. Anything would be fine. Maybe just a flower. That would be nice.”
For less-physical couples
It’s that time of year again where everyone has to deal with upcoming midterms and annoying colds, and you just know you’re not going to have the energy to “hang out” later. If you’re open to new things, Meskerem is the perfect place to go. The shared plates give off a romantic vibe, while the spicy seasonings and fibrous vegetables foreshadow something else. Things will be happening after dinner, but not in a sensual way. Some places to get dinner for less than $30 on Valentine’s Day include Sushi 101, Deejai Thai, Aria and Landmark Diner.
Mohit Nigam
“I don’t understand why there is one day where you have to be sweet to someone. It’s like Mother’s Day. You should love and respect your mother every single day.”

CHOCOlATe-COVErED CHErRIEs AND StRAWBeRrIEs Tricia Bangit TBANGIT@UNCC.EDU
Making chocolate-covered treats is pretty simple and is a fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Once your date tastes your creations, they’ll be in love.
INGREDIENTS: • 18 fresh strawberries, 10 cherries, 10 ounces chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS: 1. Wash the fruit thoroughly and pat dry. 2. Microwave: Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave for 20 seconds and stir. Repeat until half of the chocolate is melted, then stir until the chocolate is completely liquid. Do not overheat or add water. Stove: In a small pot heat and stir the chocolate chips over low heat until the chocolate is half-melted. Take the pot off the heat and stir until the chocolate is completely melted. 3. Cover a large plate or tray with wax paper. 4. Occasionally stir the chocolate, so that it doesn’t harden, dip the strawberries and cherries in one at a time, then place them on the wax paper. 5. Put baking pan in the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until the meatballs are lightly browned. 6. When you are done, cover the plate with plastic wrap and let cool in the refrigerator for 30 minutes then serve.

VALENTINE’s cont. from pg. 1 If you’re committed to the whole French experience, rent a French film such as “Breathless,” “Cyrano de Bergerac” or “An American in Paris.” This will make for a very unique Valentine’s night. They do say French is the language of love, ya know... Maybe your date has more of a simple taste. Get her an Edible Arrangement. They are bouquets of fresh fruit (of which you have the option to have them dipped in chocolate to create a smooth shell around the fruit) that come in an actual pot and are reminiscent of something you might see in a garden. You have the option to have a boxed arrangement as well. Edible Arrangements range in price from $25 to $69 and you can have them delivered to that special someone ($12 delivery charge) or pick it up from the nearest Edible Arrangement shop. Fresh fruit is delivered to the locations everyday, so you’ll never have to question the freshness of the bouquet you’re giving to your loved one. They’re usually very big arrangements, so if you’re lucky she won’t hesitate to share with you. Does you’re gal appreciate the little things in life? If you answered yes, then maybe you should should try your hand at some culinary arts and make her treats. Don’t make her the typical batch of cookies or brownies though. It’s Valentine’s Day: a.k.a. your one day (with an official title) to impress her.
MCT Campus
Chocolate is a well-known aphrodisiac, so you’ll want to use quite a bit of this. Try your hand at something off-the-wall like chocolate chip Oreo cookies. It’s literally an Oreo surrounded by cookie dough. Very unhealthy, very strange but very decadent. The Alexander McQueen of cookies. Another suggestion would be a rainbow-layered cake. Seven colors in the rainbow means seven layers in the cake. It’s looks really difficult (which will impress her) but it’s actually quite simple. It is very time consuming though, so you’ll need to plan ahead if you’re going to conquer this masterpiece. Another quick and simple sweet to prepare are beignets (made famous at the Cafe du Monde in New Orleans). These French doughnuts can be prepared in five minutes. The mix can be bought at most supermarkets, if not you can order it from the Cafe du Monde website. These are deep-fried, so be cautious. Once they’re made, sprinkle them with powdered sugar, pop them in an fancy box, put a bow on it (or even a ring on it if you’re feeling a bit like Beyoncé) and gift them to your special someone. They are usually served with coffee or tea. Of course if you aren’t daring enough to do any of these, don’t worry. I’m sure she’ll be satisfied with her box of assorted chocolates and her dozen roses. I mean, isn’t it the thought that counts? Have a happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentines Day Poem By Samantha Glenn One half searches for love The other looks at the beautiful blue sky above They finally meet and never come apart Hold it tight because guess what…you got my heart. It holds a different meaning for one and all That day when Cupid answers the lovers call Valentine’s Day – filled with hearts, chocolate, flowers and I love you’s People sharing emotions and lots of happy news. One never knows what this day will bring For those who are ready it may mean an engagement ring For others it’s simply a chance to tell someone how you feel How they bring butterflies to your stomach and make you fall head over heels.

For those who are not part of a couple it can be a bit strange It can make you feel like finding your soul mate is completely out of range Be confident though that someone cares about you Whether its family or friends, I assure you they do. It’s a day filled with roses and for florists to financially bloom A day when some couples become a bride and a groom It’s for little kids who like boxes filled with valentines and candy hearts They give out little Snoopy cards with Fun Dip just to do their parts. Daddies bring their daughters little boxes of Godiva or Russell Stover You pray this isn’t the day that the one you’re with doesn’t tell you it’s over For it bears a special meaning to receive that Hallmark card or token from the heart And for others it serves as day one of a relationship, a great place to start. It can bring up memories of relationships past That may have been good for a while, though not meant to last And it makes you thankful for what you have today A special Valentine who takes care of your heart, and is here to stay.

Niners crowned victors
49er’s Mens basketball beat the Rams 73-66 for Charlotte’s Homecoming game Travis Durkee @ T R AV I S D U R K E E
Charlotte 49ers basketball gave its alumni plenty to proud of with a 73-66 homecoming victory over the Rhode Island Rams Saturday afternoon in Halton Arena. Charlotte (12-11; 4-6 A-10) came out guns blazing in the first half. The crowd of over 8,000, including over 50 former players, erupted two and half minutes into the half when a stuff by junior center Chris Braswell led to a fast break three-pointer by guard Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe to ignite a 21-1 run by the Niners. Rhode Island (5-21; 2-9 A-10) would go without a field goal for nearly eight minutes falling behind 23-6 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The 49ers went into halftime with a 4025 lead behind 16 points from senior forward Javarris Barnett. DeMario Mayfield added nine points, seven rebounds and five assists at the break. “I just came out in the first half aggressive, I knew if they went to a zone, I can stretch it with my shooting ability,” Barnett said. “I had some good looks and wide open shots and I was able to knock them in.” “We felt like today we wanted to come out and set the tone early and not let them get any confidence early on,” said head coach Alan Major about the early run for his 49ers. Charlotte’s defense held the Rams to a dismal 26.7 percent from the field on 8-30 shooting. Rhode Island guard Billy Baron had 15 of the teams 25 total points. “We came out early and dug ourselves a hole against their man-to-man,” said Rhode Island head coach Jim Baron. “There’s no question about it, it’s tough on the road. Barnett hit some big shots. We just fell short this time. We had great looks, but you’ve got to put them down.” The Niners went 6-12 from behind the arc and shot 57.7 percent from the field. Barnett attributed for four of the Niners three point buckets. Rhode Island made the adjustments in the second half which proved troublesome for Charlotte. The Rams cut the lead to five

Photo by Chris Crews after going on a 10-0 run to open the second half Barnett was held to only two points and Charlotte was outrebounded 29-14 and outscored 41-33 in the second half allowing the lead to shrink to 66-60 with 1:45 left in the second half. The Rams then tried to exploit the Niners most fatal weakness, their free throw shooting. Charlotte missed six shots from the charity stripe in the final two minutes, but held off the second half surge by the Rams to secure the victory. Charlotte had four players score in double figures. Barnett fished with 18 to lead the team while Pierria Henry added 14, Deuce Briscoe 13 and Mayfield with 12. Braswell finished with nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Henry set a Charlotte freshman record for steals adding five in the game to bring his season total to 58; breaking the previous record of 54. Henry has had a steal in all 21 games he had played in this season
for the Niners. Although Barnett led the team in scoring, Mayfield turned in the most solid allaround effort for Charlotte. Mayfield recorded his third double-double in his last four games with his 12-point and ten-rebound performance. Charlotte forced the Rams into 20 turnovers and held them to 35 percent shooting for the game. “Good defense gets contagious and that’s what you have to do.” said Major. “The second half we were a little spotty, but we had enough defense in the first half to set the tone for the game.” This was Charlotte’s second straight conference victory leading into a two-game road trip against conference foes Dayton and Richmond to kick off the remaining six conference match-ups for the Niners. “I think we took a step forward,” Major said about the team’s victory. “In this league there’s no time to relax.” Charlotte continues conference play on Feb. 15 as they travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers.
