GAME BREAKDOWN The Chowan Hawks had their first winning season since 1999 in 2012, and are looking to keep the momentum going.
MATT CHAPMAN
ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
The Chowan Hawks will be looking to build off of a successful 6-4 2012 campaign when they kick off the 2013 season on the road against the Charlotte 49ers at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Hawks will be looking to keep momentum going since 2012 proved to be their first winning season since 1999. Chowan finished in second place in the northern division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) last year after being projected to finish fifth in the preseason polls. Hawks Head Coach Tim Place is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Chowan football program. Chowan star receiver Robert Holland (6-2, 190) is returning in 2013 for his final year of eligibility for this Hawks program. Holland has been named to the All-CIAA team in all of his first three seasons at Chowan. He concluded his junior campaign with 943 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns during the 2012 season. 4
The 49ers will most likely throw multiple defenders in the direction of Holland, but it looks like Charlotte 49ers’ starting cornerback Terrance Winchester (6-0, 170) will spend the majority of the game denying him the football. Chowan linebacker TJ Batchelor is a terror on the defensive side of the ball for the Hawks. Batchelor had an outstanding junior season in 2012 finishing the year with 77 total tackles and 12.5 sacks. These eye-popping statistics lead to Batchelor being named National Christian College Athlete Association (NCCAA) defensive player of the year. Charlotte quarterback Matt Johnson (6-3, 230) will be in charge of leading the 49ers against Batchelor’s fierce defense. Johnson, a redshirt freshman, looked fantastic in the 49ers spring game going 13-14 with 174 yards passing. A Chowan team that seems to be clearly headed in the right direction should be a good barometer for the young 49ers in the second game of their inaugural season.
