HEAD COACH BRAD LAMBERT DISHES OUT SIX PIECES OF ADVICE FOR HIS CHARLOTTE 49ERS
WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP MOMENTUM ON OUR SIDE.
LIBBY WEIHSMANN SPORTS EDITOR
WE HAVE ONE CHANCE TO START AND ESTABLISH HOW WE PLAY, AND NOW WE HAVE TO CONTINUE THAT.
IT’S ALL ABOUT HOW YOU PREPARE MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY WELL ON SATURDAY, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE WELL ALL WEEK.
STAY HUMBLE AND ATTACK EACH DAY. WE LIKE TO SAY, HUMBLE PIE IS ONLY SEVEN DAYS AWAY.
YOU NEVER HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO START, AND WE WANT TO START THE RIGHT WAY.

GAME BREAKDOWN The Charlotte 49ers host the North Carolina Central Eagles inside Jerry Richardson Stadium on Sept. 10 at 12 p.m.
MATT CHAPMAN
ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
The Charlotte 49ers and the North Carolina Central Eagles kicked off the 2013 football season with two completely opposite performances in the opening week. The 49ers looked impressive in their inaugural game while breezing past the Campbell Camels by a final score of 52-7. Charlotte finished the game with 488 yards of total offense despite pulling their starters while leading 45-7 midway through the third quarter. The Charlotte 49ers offense settled with zero turnovers. 49ers quarterback Matt Johnson stole the show by completing 19 of 29 passes for 282 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns. 12
The Eagles opened the season by traveling to Durham, North Carolina to take on the Duke Blue Devils in the Bull City Gridiron Classic. Unfortunately for North Carolina Central they were outmatched on both sides of the ball and shutout 45-0 by the Blue Devils. Six different Blue Devils scored touchdowns against a struggling Eagles defense that allowed 257 rushing yards on the day. This had to be a disappointing result for the Eagles who were hoping to build momentum from a 6-5 2012 campaign. 2012 was the first winning season the Eagles had experienced since way back in 2007.

North Carolina Central is returning six offensive starters including redshirt senior quarterback Jordan Reid (6-1, 190) who passed for just 87 yards against Duke. Reid broke the Eagles single season record by completing 62.3 percent of his pass attempts last season. Reid will have the daunting task of facing a very opportunistic 49ers defense on the other side of the ball. Charlotte forced four turnovers in their program opener against the Camels including two interceptions and two fumbles. 49ers linebacker Mark Hogan snagged an interception on just the second play of the game and took it 32 yards for the first touchdown in school history. The Eagles will most likely struggle to keep up with the fast-paced Charlotte 49ers offensive attack after losing eight starters off of their defense from last season. Though the 49ers defense appears to be young and inexperienced, they’ve not let their lack of experience influence how they play the game. The 49ers put up 277 yards through the air and an additional 211 yards with the ground game against the Camels in the opener. Both teams have a lot to prove, and Saturday’s match between the 49ers and Eagles will be a big opportunity to do just that. GOLDRUSH

“It’s here. I can’t believe it. Well, I can. It’s really here.” Judy Rose What makes all the Charlotte coaches so special to you? We have that family feeling, and we all support each other. The staff, the coaches and the athletes. To me, that’s what’s going to stand. We have a mutual feeling of respect among our coaches. We want a family feel. GOLDRUSH
Have you noticed any differences on campus from this year compared to previous years? Everybody is wearing 49er apparel. You don’t see any of that other stuff that we so often see on this campus that drives me nuts. And the stores are carrying our stuff now, finally. Everyone said it would take football to get the stores to carry our stuff. Now we have football, and now the stores have our stuff. It’s really great.

What did you tell Coach Lambert before the first game against Campbell? We’ve already won. We’ve over delivered. You’ve hired a great staff. The kids are ready. If we win the game, it’s icing on the cake. Take the pressure off, as much as you can. Try to have a little bit of time to smile knowing you’re a part of making history. Look around and say, ‘Look what you’ve built, look what you’ve done and how far you’ve brought it.’ When the game starts, you’ll be in coaching mode. You’ll be ready.
Has it hit you that there is a Charlotte 49ers football team yet? At times, it seems like just yesterday that we started planning, and my staff started two years before the Chancellor agreed to have football. What were your thoughts before you pitched football to Chancellor Dubois? If he gave us the go ahead, we had to have a plan. We had to know what we didn’t know right then, but we didn’t know, so we had to figure that out.
