GAME-DAY TAILGATING EDEN CREAMER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
With the launch of a new football program, the need for an official policy regarding tailgating at the university becomes necessary. As the university revved up for football, a tailgating policy was created. Below are points from the tailgating policy, available in full online.
CAMPUS ENTRANCES AND LOT INFORMATION All entrances except the main entrance and the John Kirk Road entrance will be closed five hours prior to kickoff. Game-day entrances open four hours prior to kickoff. Parking and tailgating will be available in lots 5, 5A, 6, 7, 7A, 14, 18, 19, 23, 25, 27 and CRI 2 and 3. Decks available for parking are Union Deck, Cone Deck 1 and 2, West Deck and CRI Deck. On-campus residents not attending the game can park in East Deck 2 and 3 or North Deck.
LOT CONTRABAND Kegs, glass containers, drinking games, devices used to accelerate the consumption of alcohol, grills in parking decks and on brick pavers, open pit fires, staked tents, household furniture and animals are prohibited.
STADIUM CONTRABAND Tobacco products, other drugs, alcohol of all kinds and weaponry are prohibited.

THE “GOLD” JERSEY Each week, a Charlotte 49ers football player will be honored with the No. 49 jersey and have the opportunity to wear it during a game. The chosen athlete is decided on by the Charlotte 49ers football coaches. There are four No. 49 jerseys that all have a different “name” on the back. Each of the “names” comes from the acronym “GOLD.”

GAME BREAKDOWN The Charlotte 49ers host the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs inside Jerry Richardson Stadium on Oct. 5 at 12 p.m.
MATT CHAPMAN
ASST. SPORTS EDITOR
The Charlotte 49ers football team will take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Jerry Richardson Stadium. This is the 49ers first home game since Sept. 14 when they suffered a 40-13 loss to the NCCU Eagles. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will be kicking off a two-game road trip of their own with their first stop coming at the 49ers before traveling to Conway, S.C. to face their Big South Conference rival the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Charlotte has been a hard team to figure out early in the season. The 49ers looked like world-beaters in the first two games in program history as they picked up a 52-7 win over the Campbell Camels and then added a 47-7 drubbing of the Chowan Hawks the following week. Since then, Charlotte has been brought back down to earth following the aforementioned 40-13 loss to the Eagles
12
and another 34-7 blowout at the hands of the James Madison Dukes. Gardner-Webb has been impressive so far during the 2013 campaign aside from a 56-0 road loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Runnin’ Bulldogs picked up two impressive wins over ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks in the middle of September. The first came in a tight contest against the Richmond Spiders at home where they prevailed by a final score of 12-10 and the second came in a defensive struggle in monsoon like conditions on the road against the Wofford Terriers as they picked up a 3-0 victory. The 49ers have put up impressive statistics on the offensive side of the ball as they average 430.5 yards per game and almost 30 points per game coming in at a clip of 29.8 per contest. The Achilles heel for the 49ers this season, especially in

losses, has been turnovers. Charlotte ranks 119th in turnovers this year as they’ve already committed 13 on the season, seven fumbles and six interceptions. Their 13 total turnovers are just two shy of being the worst of all FCS teams in 2013. In contrast, the Charlotte defense is the best in the country amongst FCS squads at forcing turnovers by their opposition. They’ve already forced 17 turnovers by their opponents, ten fumbles and seven interceptions. The problem for the 49ers defense is the fact that they’re on the field entirely too often thanks to the offenses turnover struggles, often playing with their backs against the wall in bad field position. The Runnin’ Bulldogs should have a tough time coping against the opportunistic Charlotte defense as their offensive output has been rather mediocre so far this season. Gardner-Webb averages just 10.8 points per game albeit against top notch competition. Gardner-Webb redshirt junior quarterback Lucas Beatty, from Olympic High School right here in Charlotte, N.C., has struggled this year throwing for just 693 yards to go along with only two touchdowns and four interceptions. Beatty will have his work cut out for him against the 49ers on Saturday afternoon. The Runnin’ Bulldogs defense has been about average so far this season allowing 21.5 points per contest. They’ll need a big-time performance to slow down an extremely fast paced Charlotte offensive attack. 49ers quarterback Matt Johnson could have a big day as long as he makes good decisions with the football and eliminates the turnovers that have plagued Charlotte all year. Johnson has thrown for 971 yards while tossing eight touchdown passes to go along with six interceptions so far in 2013.
