A typography project that incorporates the steps taken in the process of composition exploration. The compilations in the book begin with letterforms, words, then text and graphic elements followed by texture and finally images. Overall, The book format functions as an introduction to the complexities of editorial design and book cover design.

NEIGHBORHOODS OF TYPE
The neighborhoods of
New York are diverse and rich with character. This character can be seen in the buildings, the spots
and restaurant, the public space and the people who make the neighborhood what it is. I explored the
four neighborhoods: Time Square, Central Park, Soho and Williamsburg and found out each beauty of character through typography.

2 COMP OSITION
By carefully organizing
different levels of elements, we could see the beauty of typography. This project started from the most simplest three letters, then, progressively added more elements and complicated shapes. Not only all the
elements need relationships and hierarchy, but also creating a feelings to the compositions.
CONCEPTS of COMPOSITION
Scale Size Balance Tension / Harmony Contrast Context Meaning Focus Form_Format Structure_Grid Direction Rhythm_Movement Color_Tone Depth_Positive / Negative / Foreground / Background Detail Texture_Smooth / Rough, Computer / Hand, Alters definition Drama_Mystery / Surprise
COMPOSITION
LETTERFORMS Selected three letters and the corresponding typefaces that work well together to create compositions.
02
COMPOSITION
WORDS Kept the three letters and add another three words with the matching typeface to create new composition.
02
COMPOSITION
TEXT GRAPHIC ELEMENTS Started with the same three letters and three words I used for the previous compositions, then added one paragraph of text and a graphic element in new composition.
COMPOSITION
TEXTURE & POSITIVE/ NEGATIVE Positive/Negative is the relationship between figure and ground, I incorporated it and used texture as a major component to make the fourth composition.
02
COMPOSITION
IMAGE Maintained the three levels of typography– letterforms, words and text, graphic elements and positive/ negative, then included an image to make the final composition.
3 EDITORIAL LAYOUT
By adding enough variety and flexibility in the composition and following grid sysytem, the content will be more attractiv to readers.
03
EDITORIAL LAYOUT
ASSIGNED TOPIC Designed the assigned content as spreads and created the fluent flow for reading from left to right, up to down. Not only I had to connect all the information together but also leave enough space for reducing the pressure from heavy text, as well as attracting readers.

EDITORIAL LAYOUT
FREE TOPIC Kept the same designing rules from the assigned topic, in this assignment, I selected an interview article about a cooperative album between Tony Bennett and, my favorite performer, Lady Gaga as topic.
4 BOOK COVER DESIGN
Book cover design is everything for entire book. In this assignment, I chose the Bridget Jones novel as my topic for book cover design. I tried to create my original typeface by exploring different directions and using various kinds of materials. Although the results was not always came as I expect, the process, however, was surprised me all the time.

Editing typography is not an easy job, every slightly change could have different results. After exercised all the projects, I felt more comfortable in treating typography. However, once I start adjust them, the process will never end. The more I do, the less I get done.
