VIEW OVER LOBBY FROM RESTAURANT

KITCHEN

THE KITCHEN IS PLACED IN LEVEL -1 TOGETHER WITH CONNECTING STORAGES AND PREPARATION ROOMS. ALL THE FOOD WILL BE HEATED AND PREPARED IN THE KITCHEN AND THEN SERVED ONE FLOOR UP IN THE RESTAURANT. TODAY, FOOD WILL COME FROM THE HOSPITAL AND ONLY BE HEATED AND SERVED IN THIS BUILDING. HOW THIS HOTEL WILL BE USED IN 20 YEARS NO ONE KNOWS, PLANNING FOR A REAL HOTEL KITCHEN ENABLES OTHER POSSIBILITIES IN THE FUTURE.

STAFF AREA

IN THE BASEMENT STAFF WORKING WITH FOOD HAVE THEIR CHANGING ROOMS AND LUNCH ROOM. BY PLACING IT IN CLOSE CONNECTION TO THE KITCHEN AND RESTAURANT (ABOVE THE KITCHEN) THE STAFF HAS TO RUN AROUND LESS.

SINCE THE BUILDING IS PLACED ON A SLOPE, THE STAFF- AND RESTAURANT SPACE FACING THE SLOPE HAVE FULL DAYLIGHT OVERLOOKING THE FOREST VALLEY.

THE OPEN STRUCTURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING FUNCTIONS AS THE CROSSROAD BETWEEN THE OTHER THREE VOLUMES AND BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT FLOORS THROUGH THE ELEVATOR. BEHIND THE ELEVATOR YOU FIND THE COMMON ROOM WHERE QUESTS CAN MAKE A CUP OF COFFEE OR TEA, HEAT A CINNAMON BUN AND WATCH TV TOGETHER WITH OTHER GUETS. THERE IS ROOM TO HAVE “FIKA” WITH YOUR VISITING FAMILY OR ENJOY THE FIRE PLACE WHEN THE OUTSIDE IS CHILLY.

THE TREATMENT ROOM IS PLACED IN THE NORTH VOLUME ON EACH FLOOR, IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE ELEVATOR, FOR GUESTS TO MEET WITH A NURSE OR DOCTOR.

KIDS’ PLAY ROOM

NEXT TO THE TREATMENT ROOM IS A KIDS’ PLAY ROOM WITH WINDOWS TOWARDS THE COMMON ROOM FOR PARENTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE KIDS.

CORRIDORS

THE AIM WAS TO GET AWAY FROM STRAIGHT, LONG CORRIDORS WHICH OFTEN IS THE CASE IN HOSPITAL OR HOTEL SETTINGS. THE PICTURE TO THE RIGHT INSPIRED US TO WORK WITH A VARYING WIDTH. BY PUSHING IN THE ENTRANCES ON THE CORRESPONDING SIDES OF THE CORRIDOR, THE SPACE WILL FEEL WIDER AND THE CORRIDOR SHORTER. BY BREAKING THE CORRIDOR INTO SHORTER AND ANGLED UNITS, YOU WILL NOT MEET DIRECT SUNLIGHT WHICH HELPS YOU TO SEE THE FACE OF THE PERSON YOU MEET RATHER THAN A BLACK IMAGE.

FACADE MATERIAL

MANY BUILDINGS IN LINKÖPING AND ON THE HOSPITAL SITE ARE MADE OUT OF MATERIALS THAT GIVE A HEAVY EXPRESSION, SUCH AS STONE OR CLADDING. BY CHOOSING BRICK THIS BUILDING WILL CONTINUE ON THE SAME TRACK.

THREE OF THE VOLUMES HAVE A MORE SOLID EXPRESSION AND ARE MADE OUT OF BRICK. THE FOURTH VOLUME (THE MIDDLE ONE) IS A PURE GLASS STRUCTURE, STEPPING OUT IN THE SLOPE AND INVITING THE FOREST INTO THE COMMON ROOMS INSIDE.

THE INSIDE NEEDS LIGHT BUT THE FACADE DOES NOT NEED ANY HOLES. HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM? BY PUSCHING IN HALF THE STONES IN A REGULAR PATTERN THE FACADE COMES ALIVE. AT THE SAME TIME SOME STONES CAN BE TAKEN AWAY TO CREATE A TRANSPARENT WALL WITH GLASS BEHIND. THIS IS USED AROUND THE FIRE STAIRS, TO COVER SOME ROOMS WHERE FULLY INSIGHT IS NOT DESIRABLE AND TO COVER PARTS OF THE BALCONIES.

FACADES

ROOM TYPES

TO SIMPLIFY THE BUILDING SHAPE AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ROOMS. BOTH ROOMS HAVE THE SAME LAYOUT FOR EASY FURNISHING, BUT ONE ROOM IS WITH AN ANGLED WALL. BOTH ROOMS ARE DESIGNED FOR FULL ACCESIBILITY, WE CONSIDER IT IMPORTANT SINCE THE HOTEL IS PART OF A HOSPITAL. THE NUMBER OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IS INCREASING, SINCE THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO LAST FOR AT LEAST A HUNDRED YEARS WE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION. DUE TO ECONOMICAL INEFFICIENCY OF SINGLE ROOMS IN HOTELS, WE HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE ALL ROOMS DOUBLE, YET THEY ARE SPACIOUS EFFICIENT (27 m2).

THE BRICK CONTINUES INTO THE ROOM AS A WHITE PAINTED WALL BEHIND THE BED. THE BALCONIES HAVE HANDRAILS WHERE PARTS OF THE BRICKS HAVE BEEN TAKEN AWAY, LETTING LIGHT THROUGH. APART FROM THE BRICK LIGHT WOOD IS USED, TO CREATE A WARM AND EMBRACING ATMOSPEHERE. ADDITIONAL COLORS ARE SOFT BLUE/GREEN WHICH CREATES A CALMING AND RELAXING EFFECT.

BENJAMIN IS BEING TREATED FOR CANCER AND HAS BROUGHT HIS WIFE KLARA AND DAUGHTER NOVA FOR SUPPORT.

GRETA HAS AN EYE INJURY WHICH SHE NEEDS SURGERY FOR.

A WEEK AGO LITTLE DAVID WAS BORN IN WEEK 29. ANNA AND MICHAEL STAYS AT THE HOTEL TO BE CLOSE BY.

08.00 BENJAMIN IS NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE BREAKFAST BUT ACCOMPANIES HIS FAMILY TO THE RESTAURANT TWO FLOORS DOWN.

10.00 GRETA ARRIVES BY CAB AND CHECKS IN.

09.00 EVERY MORNING AFTER BREAKFAST BOTH PARENTS WALK OVER TO THE BABY WARD TO WATCH THEIR LITLLE SON. SO FAR THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ALLOWED TO HOLD HIM, HOW THEY LONG FOR IT!

09.00 BENJAMIN LEAVES FOR THE HOSPITAL. 09.30 LITTLE NOVA IS A HAPPY BUT MESSY CHILD AND CLOTHES HAS TO BE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. THANKFULLY THERE IS A LAUNDRY ROOM FOR KLARA TO USE. 12.00 KLARA DECIDES TO HAVE LUNCH IN THE NEIGHBOURING CAFÉ. TO CHANGE ENVIRONMENT FROM THE FREQUENTLY USED RESTAURANT HELPS HER TO MANAGE THE TOUGH SITUATION. 13.00 THE SUN IS OUT AND NOVA GETS TO RUN AROUND IN THE PARKS WHICH SURROUNDS THE HOTEL. 15.00 BENJAMIN COMES BACK FROM THE TREATMENT AND NEEDS TO REST. NOVA FALLS ASLEEP NEXT TO HER DAD IN THE BIG BED, WHILE KLARA READS A BOOK OUT ON THE BALCONY. 19.00 SINCE THE TREATMENT MAKES BENJAMIN NAUSEOUS, HE COULD NOT EAT VERY MUCH FOR DINNER. LATER THEY DECIDE TO MEET SOME NEW FRIENDS IN THE COMMON ROOM, AND HAVE SOME TEA TOGEHTER IN FRONT OF THE FIRE PLACE.

12.00 AT LUCNH SHE ENTERS THE LIGHT RESTAURANT LOOKING AROUND FOR SOMEWHERE TO SIT. BY THE GRAND WINDOWS SHE SPOTS A YOUNG WOMAN AND BABY DAUGHTER, AND BRINGS HER FOOD OVER TO THEIR TABLE. 14.00 GRETA WALKS OVER TO THE HOSPITAL AND HER SURGERY. 17.00 THE EYE SURGERY IS DONE, GRETA FINDS SOME REST IN HER ROOM. 19.00 STAYING ALONE CAN BE QUITE LONELY, SO AFTER DINNER GRETA JOINS A GROUP OF PEOPLE BY THE FIREPLACE. 07.30 THE OLD LADY IS UP EARLY AND AFTER A TASTY BREAKFAST SHE HAS A CHECK UP APPOINTMENT WITH THE DOCTOR IN THE TREATMENT ROOM. 10.00 EVERYTHING WENT WELL WITH THE SURGERY, GRETA BRINGS HER THINGS, WAVES GOOD BYE TO HER NEW FRIEND NOVA AND TAKES A CAB BACK HOME.

16.00 MICHAEL’S OLDER GIRL MISSES HER DAD AND DECIDES TO COME OVER FOR A FEW NIGHTS. THE SOFA BED WORKS WELL AS AN ADDITIONAL SLEEPING PLACE AND ALLOWS MIA TO STAY WITH THE FAMILY. 19.30 ANNA CAN NOT THINK ABOUT ANYTHING HER BABY SON. THIS EVENING THERE IS AN ART CLASS IN THE CREATIVITY ROOM AND MIA FORCES HER TO GO. AFTERWARDS ANNA REALIZES WHAT A GOOD WAY IT WAS TO EXPRESS ALL HER EMOTIONS. THIS NIGHT SHE SLEEPS BETTER THAN BEFORE. 07.00 MICHAEL WAKES UP EARLY AND DECIDES TO HAVE SOME ALONE TIME WITH HIS DAUGHTER. THEY GO DOWN TO THE JACUZZI AND SAUNA AND WATCH THE SUN RISE OUTSIDE WHILE TALKING ABOUT OLD MEMORIES.
