Dr. Greg Brown, professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice within the Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies, is using the RAI-MH (a mental health screening tool used in all Ontario psychiatric hospitals) to determine the number of inmates who have a mental disorder in Ontario jails, detention and correctional centres. With funding from both the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as well as the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Dr. Brown worked with a team of 10 students to conduct face-to-face assessments with 522 inmates in 14 different facilities. Q Q ECONOMICS

Bachelor of Arts

Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science Location: North Bay The study of economics is fundamental to our understanding of how the world functions. What determines the prices of the products we buy? Why do some people live below the poverty line while others experience extreme wealth? How can the cost of living be so vastly different between countries? Economics is concerned with the social science behind these questions and a mass of other choice theories. Our Economics program surveys the philosophical viewpoint of significant economic theorists and applies these concepts to investigations of business, environmental, financial, health, political and social policies that ultimately have economic consequences to the individual, the country, and the world. Dr. April James, Geography professor and a Canadian Research Chair (CRC), studies how water moves through watersheds, from rainfall to streamflow, how long it resides, and what flowpaths water takes as it makes it journey. Dr. James established the Nipissing Watershed Analysis Center lab and is supported by CRC and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) funding.

The English Studies program cultivates advanced communication skills, with the primary object of study being the text – a medium of argument and persuasion, a body of myth, aspirational fantasy, self-delusion, propaganda, and reason. Over the course of your degree, you will study the cultures that are expressed, imagined, defined, and, in some cases, challenged in literature from Beowulf (the Anglo-Saxon dragon-slayer) to present day texts such as Harry Potter. Introductory classes, provide the composition and analytical skills you will need as an English major and are taught through a combination of lecture and small group seminars. Small group discussion is core to the program at every level. You will acquire valuable research and analytical skills through courses focusing on Literary History and Genre, Cultural and Media Studies, and Language and Rhetoric.

Unique course offerings like DIRT are taught by multiple professors and guest lecturers – each from a different discipline – who investigate a theme through the lens of their own area of expertise. The course is facilitated by one professor who is trained in interdisciplinary thought, and who integrates coursework to encourage an exchange of ideas among students with different viewpoints and knowledge. Within the theme of DIRT, students explored dirty people, dirty politics, dirty water, dirty cities through Biology, English, Geography, Gender, History, Political Science, Religion and Culture perspectives. A course like this may just pique your curiosity and give you a new-found appreciation for an unfamiliar discipline.

employers say...

“ For the past seven years I have had the pleasure of working with graduates from Nipissing and the following list of attributes outlines why I think they are excellent: planning is skilled and professional; continued willingness to learn and grow in Education; understanding of differentiated learning - a key point for students; their student-centered approach; understanding that teaching is about students and not stuff; integration is walked and talked; they teach from the heart and think with the head; graduates are mature and appear to love this career; they take their job choice seriously; they practice what they have been taught; and care about what is the right thing to do. Every graduate I have met exhibits these qualities and it is exciting!” Lesley Tomporowski, Special Education Consultant/Assessment Consultant 43
