the therapeutic
Ideal travel guidebook for returning visitors to Japan searching for a deeper cultural experience.
yoku (“forest bathing”)
Away from the bustling cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, there is a hidden Japan—where quiet, bucolic ways of life, and proudly maintained local history and traditions can be found. Japan—100 Hidden Towns is a guide to this other, offthe-beaten-track, Japan. 100 towns from all of the country’s 47 prefectures—including some places which may be unfamiliar even to natives of Japan—were carefully selected and reviewed by researchers from over 150 candidate areas, with a focus on nature, culture, food, access, and key dates to visit. Interesting tidbits of local history are also included in each review’s “Did you know?” section, while a taste of subjectivity and a few anecdotes are provided in the “We say” segments. This book is supported by a website (www.100hiddentowns. jp) that includes detailed maps to the attractions, and updates to help readers while on their travels. As well as providing a wealth of travel information in one attractive, easily navigable volume, the book is ideal for casual reading—deepening your understanding of Japan as you pour over the pages. Anthony Gardner is a long-term resident of Japan from the United Kingdom. As well as having extensive business experience in Japan, Anthony is bilingual and he (as well as a team of contributors) has traveled the length and breadth of the country in his research for this book.

It is surrounded by over 15 dams and 33 power plants which have served as the foundation of Japanese modernization. In River, a local-born landscape photographer, Kazutoshi Yoshimura, fully captures the power and glory that the Kiso River plays in its role in modern Japan, in contrast to the beauty of majestic nature of Kiso Valley and waterstream of the Kiso River. The first dam of the Kiso River launched in 1911, seven power plants constructed by the King of Electricity in Japan, an old generator which is still active, and Francis water turbines are all intriguing subjects. Dams with tailwater in the glow of the sunset, revealed sites of the power plants, and pylons lined up in a row are unique and unusual sights.

Sasebo has developed rapidly with the modernization of Japan in the late 1900s. This is the 4th title of Sasebo-born photographer Osamu Matsuo published through the “Sasebo Project” launched in 2007. The aim of this project is to acknowledge the charm of the town from a journalistic perspective, rather than from a photographic one. The theme of this 4th release is “17-year-old Sasebo teenagers in 2017.” There are 79 portraits of 17-year-old teenagers in this title, lingering on the streets of the town where the tangled alleys of a hilly city are unique and compelling. They are today’s youngsters, of course, but the photographer has been able to capture a timeless look with the effects of nostalgic black-and-white.

ABOUT LOVE Sakiko Nomura Nudity and intimacy in the 400-page volume of photography. Nomura began her career as the only pupil of famous photographer, Nobuyoshi Araki. She has photographed male nudity for over 25 years. In About Love, you can see over 100 models creating their individual sense of time and distance. Nomura’s monochrome works cannot be treated just as an erotic art; there are strong senses of madness and melancholy as well. Moreover, Nomura’s depictions focus not only on male nudity but also nature, animals, and environment, interpreting Nomura’s perspectives acquired through the time she has spent with the models. Fumikazu Ohara, art director and head of SOUP DESIGN, designed the book impressively under the concept of the Holy Bible by using edge painting in heavy black in the binding. A contribution essay by writer Junko Gosho is included. International photographer Sakiko Nomura’s work focuses on nudity and intimacy between men and women. She studied under Nobuyoshi Araki, a leading Japanese photographer, who took her on as his only pupil.

During the 1960s, the small island of Gunkanjima, now a world heritage site and uninhabited for more than 40 years off the coast of Nagasaki, was home to a population of roughly 5,000. They were coal workers during an era that relied on coal as its energy source. Due to the small size of the island, the population density was more than nine times higher than Tokyo’s. For his 1956 exhibition “Human Land,” Narahara photographed Gunkanjima as well as the island of Sakurajima in Kagoshima prefecture, which had suffered a gigantic volcanic explosion—the most powerful in 20th century Japan—in 1914 that left villages covered under a three meter thick layer of ashes.

Shomei Tomatsu is one of the most influential Japanese photographers of the post-war era. This new edition consists of two volumes: “The Pencil of the Sun 1975” and “The Pencil of the Sun 2015.” While the former 1975 version is upgraded with a new cover based on the out-of-print first edition issued in 1975, the latter 2015 version contains 103 photos of Tomatsu’s later works, both published and unpublished. Two of them were rearranged respectively by two different editors with discussion, intending to succeed the original perspectives of Tomatsu but add new contemplations for readers. Shomei Tomatsu was born in Nagoya in 1930, and passed away in 2012. He began photographing while he was at Aichi University, and before long he would become recognized as the fulcrum of the post-war photography world of Japan.

Lissitzky’s masterpiece originally published in
For the Voice is considered to be Lissitzky’s masterpiece of modern typography which was originally published in Berlin in 1923. As Lissitzky explained, “I have tried to create an equivalent unity using the poem and the typography,” this book is a magnificent example of collaboration between poet and artist. Lissitzky provided visual interpretation of Mayakovsky’s poems and each of them is accompanied by a dynamic visual composition with symbolic meaning. Printed letters in red, black and white tones become pictorial signs, contributing to each poem’s identity.
• Magnificent collaboration between poet and artist
For the Voice is a collection of poems published in Berlin in 1923 by Russian poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky (author), in collaboration with a Russian artist El Lissitzky (illustrator). Mayakovsky was born in Georgia but moved with his family to Moscow where he became active in left-wing politics. He embraced the revolution not only for the economic and social changes it would bring, but as a gateway to freedom of art and individual expression. Increasingly disillusioned with the Soviet Union under the dictator Josef Stalin, he committed suicide on April 14, 1930.
