PORTFOLIO Niranjana M
Hi, I’m Niranjana, a 24 year old architect seeking to be part of a workplace that houses inquisitive minds, nurtures conversations and enables creative workmanship. I am passionate about working and learning rigorously and mindfully on design big and small. I believe there exists an intrinsically basic connection between beings and nature; and that architecture as a practice requires us to build and sustain as strongly and truly as possible upon this bond.

Set in the southern forest regions of Karnataka, the Jenu Kuruba tribes face a deteriorating livelihood as their forests home have now become restricted. They can no longer gather or hunt small wild animals for food or other needs and therefore no longer sustain a livelihood.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Master plan - Zoning
The Jenu Kurubas in this area live an almost completely off-grid livelihood. Right from making their own brick used to build their dwellings usig locally available material to hand-crafted tools to facilitate their activities. They spend most of the daylight time out doors including cooking which happens in a shaded structure close to the dwelling space and use the sheltered dwelling space only at night time to rest. They are a very close knit community that often share or Wexchange goods & produce and also form a safe space for social interactions. This system of lifestyle is key to designing a responsive rehabilitated community.
6
The Dwelling units are to be of two typologies ; TYPE(A)-25m2 and TYPE(B)-30 m . They are designed such that two units of the same typology share a common wall and a toilet. Four pairs of such units in case of TYPE A and five pairs in case of TYPE B share a common back yard space. These pairs of dwelling units face towards each other forming either a small gathering space, a pathway, or a bigger community space that are activated by the front porches of these units which also double as a cooking area. 2

The Primary school for standards I to V is designed with a vision of breaking away from the typical corridor-ed enclosures which instead incorporates a play area that acts also as a circulation space between the class rooms. A simple G+1 structure of rammed earth and concrete beam , covered with pitched country-tiled roofing allows for ample sky-lit classrooms in the upper storey as well ground structures. The open plan also enables a strong visual and active connectivity among the classrooms, the O.A.T and the library.

The Guest dormitory is a simple structure designed to house, 1. A kitchen to prepare food for the guests, 2. An outdoor common space to gather, dine, snack or communicate and 3. Individual spaces to rest. The room for resting comprise of a sleeping area, a balcony, a study/living space and a toilet. Each of these volumes are stacked alternatively to create open spaces that allow natural light and ventilation and also as a small private garden that one can step out to. 9

The site is located within the dense urban fabric of Chennai, the capital city of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. The almost 1 acre plot is to house a residence & a space that quarters the staff, surrounded by lush vegetation. Built using local granite stone, the foundation is to sustain the single storey load bearing brick structure and a full roof garden. Building with granite, brick and lime mortar that is made on site, the process is sensitive to availability of material, and of understanding its dialogue with one another.

A small farmers quarters set within a larger farm land in the village of Ithampadu, south of Andhra Pradesh. The project is an initiation of a welcoming shelter beside the cool shade of the Neem tree for the cows and the farmer’s family who toil the land in the mostly dry, hot & arid region.
