This center would have facility to study, document and monitor the ecosystems around. Experts would guide the interns or volunteers to take short term or long term projects. Exposure visits of various groups, from local area or distant areas, who are interested in watershed work or restoration work, can be organized. Training for local people, farmers, groups can be conducted to reach out to masses. There are 25 villages in Panshet catchment, and almost equal number in neighboring Varasgaon and Velhe catchment, which can be invited for exposure visits and take training in watershed management. Nisarg shala program can be conducted for local school children.

Documentation of Mutha catchment •

•

Mapping of all common lands within Mutha catchment on satellite image : Govt. forest, gayran, sacred groves etc. which would be useful in watershed management and planning for future and can lead to actual restoration of these lands. Three sub-catchments : Mutha, Moshi, Ambi. Pune Mutha Moshi

Benefits and Opportunities • Sets an example for ecological restoration and watershed management in an holistic way. • Looking at the current rate of degradation of forests, biodiversity park would serve as live museum of species found in Sahyadri. People also would be able to buy saplings which initiates ex-situ conservation of the same species. • Adhiwas Resource Station will offer facility to do research on many aspects of Sahyadri, Northern Westerns Ghats, which is very important source regions of most of the big rivers in Maharashtra. • This project offers direct & indirect employment opportunities for local people as well as researchers from city. (In the first year, 46 % of the budget will be utilized towards local employment and 37 % on urban employment, directly or indirectly.)

After 5 years • After this project period of five years, we intend to continue Biodiversity Park, Nursery and Training as income generating activities to support sustenance of the resource centre. • Also, we plan to associate with other national or international institutes to continue research and training and / or get funding from them.

Key Performance Indicators • Water levels within the watershed • Growth of saplings and change in overall biodiversity within biodiversity park area with respect to soil temperatures, moisture and species composition • Number of plant species collected, planted and propagated • Plants distributed or purchased through the nursery • Villagers copied this concept • Number of visitors • Number of private land owners implemented this technique
