Nirma Servellon Mrs. Cox English 111-W05 December 9, 2013 What I Have Learned in English 111 English has always been a difficult subject for me to deal with especially the grammar part of English, but I feel that I have learned a lot of things in my English 111 class. I have learn how to better use the writing process, and how easy the writing process can be if I don’t think about too much on what I’m going to write about or how I’m going to say it. I learned that there are many resources that I can use on campus or outside of campus that I can use to improve my writing. There are many things to the writing process that I have learn, and the differences of audience is something I always try to keep in mind, if not the papers that I have written would be directed to all kinds of audiences instead the specific audience the teacher has said to write about. But over all this semester has been a great experience, and I feel like have made great improvements on my writing. Therefore the writing process for me is a simple process that if I know how to follow it the writing will just be easier to process. It all starts with the prewriting process. I have learned what works for me best when I feel like I’m stuck on the prewriting phase, and what works best is to just free write. Free writing helps me to not over think about what I’m going to write, and it helps my ideas to flow freely without being stuck on what to say. After I have the prewriting phase completed, I feel like it’s much easier for me to organize my essays. But with the one thing
I’m still struggling is the thesis statement. The thesis statement is really hard for me to write because I feel like I still don’t know have to write an effective thesis statement, and that’s what I have struggled the most when writing an essay. But there are many resources that can still help to improve my writing. In addition JCC has many resources that can help me as a writer, to improve my writing process and just my writing over all. My writing lab is a great resource that I have used in the past, and it has helped me in many ways. The mywritinglab is a program which I summit my finish essay online for some to peer edit. It really does help because I get an idea of what are some of the errors that I have made before the teacher can grade it. I really like the mywritinglab program and I feel that is a resource that I will be using for every English class whenever I have to write an essay. There are still a lot more things that I have learned this semester and that has helped me to write an essay. Therefore, when it comes to writing an essay I have learned that the tone of the paper and how I write to the target audience is very important. I always try to keep in mind what type of audience I’m writing about because if I don’t, I will not be able to target the audience that I’m supposed to write the paper about. Writing for a specific audience can be simple, but I always overthink everything, so I have learned that when I’m writing the essay I think about the audience being in front of me, and that I speaking to them. Pretending that my audience is in front of me has helped me to write for different audiences. In conclusion, there are things that I have learned this semester that will help on my other English classes. I learned not to overthink the writing process and just to let the writing flow smoothly, I have learned that JCC have many resources that I can use, and I have learned to
pretend to be in front of my target audience to be able to an effective essay. All the things that I have learned will help me to write better.
