about

nirmit shelat I am currently pursuing my bachelors in Product Designing at Unitedworld Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. Observing and analyzing human behavior has always come naturally to me which has culminated into my passion for product designing. I believe that developing viable design solutions requires comprehensive understanding of the core needs of the consumers which is only achieved by connecting with the masses. The challenge of successful translation of creativity into effective user centric products is what drives me as a designer. I am an automobile enthusiast and I feed my design passion with photography and travel.

SKETCHES

Sketching is the most basic and an important tool or a means of communication for any designer.

G Lw A S S orkshop A workshop to learn the basic techniques of free form hand blowing process of making glass products and then come up with a new product using the same or any other explored technique.

Light reaches the sphere because of total internal reflection.

Mood board attributes : Minimal | Elegant | Simple

Light source : at the bottom of the glass rod.

Acoustic amplifier

The conical structure resembling to the bell of a trumpet is made using blowing technique.

Compared to rubber acoustic amplifiers, the one made from glass produces much better quality of sound.

MECHANISM

Learning of basic mechanisms like pulleys, cams, linkages, etc. and selecting one of them and develop a product using similar mechanism or its underlying principle. This staircase can be converted to a ramp for a wheelchair/strecher. Here the most challenging part was finding the perfect ratio of length of bars in linkages.

CHEVROLET CRUZE Hyundai Elantra was the car that was the quite popular in this segment and offered best in class features at a relatively low price.

At an initial stage the research was conducted by visiting several car showrooms falling in the same category, which was then followed by interaction with the actual owners/users of the car (Elantra).

The research involved free flow interviews INFERENCES (based on user research) mostly so as to get authentic data. Also through covert observations many inferences were made about the user’s interaction with the dashboard panel. Too many clicks to set time

The clock display is not clearly visible Cd in buttton has no function and is confused with the cd eject button The folder buttons are not frequently used The display assist and information buttons are not used by all users

The tune and file buttons The three individual displays for the clock, music system and the air conditioning system and too many buttons make tasks complicated for the users. The dashboard of Elantra is too flashy during night, which is quite distracting for those driving during night.

One of the concept where we have removed the folder and track change buttons from the sides and instead added up and down keys for track changing . Now changing folder is more easy with just a scroll and enter . A mute button is added which is easier to mute than scrolling the volume to 0. The display light was changed to green, but was not appricieated and liked by all our users

The blue light is too flash and the fonts and not clearly readable Blue back-lit displays are quite flashy and the text is not clearly readable The clock display is not clearly visible

DESIGN CRITERIA Cd in button In case of re-designing, the layout should go with the car’s interior. has no function Too many clicks and is mostly Re-designed layout of the system should be simple and user-friendly. to set time misunderstood CONCEPT GENERATION

Another concept where we changed the whole panel with black and silver and providing only buttons that were in use , but the users found it not as good as others and had difficulty using it .

Another concept where we

After several trials and errors this was the concept which according to the users was the most simple and user-friendly.

This is the final model where leather trim was added on the third layer of the console which matches the dashboard and interior of the car .

Assignment Purpose : Develop user-centred design capabilities to integrate the technological knowledge and skills in the process of aesthetic form development. Selected area/Product : Security system/device for home.

Issues faced by Users :

Poor audio input and output

Awkward camera High repairing costs positioning

T E C H N O L O G Y

The project began with an internet based research followed by an extensive user research for collecting authentic information. Cabling issues for wired devices

Frequent false alarming

Poor viewing angles of the screen

Unresponsive buttons

Insights ( based on user research )  Intimidating  Not value for money  Devices are expensive  Setting up different sensors individually is difficult This causes most households to stop using their systems over time putting security at risk.

Ideation

Specifications Hardware HD camera with wide angle lens IR enabled night vision HQ microphones and speakers PIR sensors Accelerometer Smoke detector Rechargeable battery Software Live video streaming capability Sensor data monitoring Remote access Data encryption Customizable privacy settings Data tracking

Advantages over conventional security systems Remote operation  Battery backup with an alert in case of power cut  Secure data encryption  No cabling issues (wireless capabilities)  No false alarms  Better view with wide angle lens  Notifies in case of unusual activities or if the device is tampered  Remote siren trigger  Two way communication  Customizable scheduled updates with images and other sensor data on phone  The device keeps a track of usual activities and noise levels and in case of a sudden change or unusual behaviour, it notifies you 

This is a standalone security device which is much more advanced and smarter as compared to the full blown security systems of the present market. It is a single unit which not only has an HD camera but also multiple sensors that keep a track of everything from motion, temperature, air quality to sound, vibration and activity to keep your house secure.

PACKAGING

The assignment here was to study information graphics of any one package form and evolve a fresh solution for the same keeping in mind visual heirarchy, fonts, typography, colour, etc. The objective was to understand the nuances of visual and instructional semantics and graphics of packaging.

Redesigned Packaging

Existing Packaging

Re-design the packaging form in context of its users, characteristic of content to be packed, brand communication, and emotional values associated with the packaging.

Assignment : Pick one consumer product which is manufactured using organized engineering processes taking into account the following: The product should have: • 2 to 4 different materials (metal, wood, plastic, fabric, etc.) • Some technological complexity/difficulty • Some production engineering complexity/difficulty

TECHNO A E S T H E T I C S T Y L I N G

Arrange the three major elements : Cube, Plane and a Rod in different ways and note down which of the three elements is dominant, sub-dominant and sub-ordinate and manipulate radii at edges and corners.

Transforming 2D geometric shapes into its visually and aesthetically engaging derivatives and then integrating four different shapes and arranging them across an axis to complement it with the selected attribute Attribute : Fluidic

Simple Product Design The assignment was to observe different processes in the kitchen and select any one of them. Then analyse the whole process and look for any oppurtunity to redesign any of the tools used during that process. Selected process : Gajar ka halwa Tool : Grater

Accidental injuries caused by graters :

SIMPLE

P R O DD EUS ICG TN Redesigned existing grater in which the surface on the sides is flat and the central part with blades is concave which doesn’t let the carrot slip while grating to avoid any kind of injury.

A specially designed tool to hold the carrot while grating on a normal grater so as to check any kind of accidental injuries.

ART

NOUVEAU

The assignment here was to select a particular era of design and design a cube that has resemblance with that era. Selected era - Art Nouveau An ornamental style of art that flourished throughout Europe and the United States (1890-1910). Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic curvilinear lines often based on plant-forms.

PRINCIPLE

and

ELEMENTS

The elements of design are the building blocks that make up a any composition such as drawing, painting or design.

These elements primarily include the most basic things like lines, dots, shapes, space, their arrangement, etc. Principles of design determine how well we compose a piece of art.

GEOMETRY Sierpinski gasket/triangle and other geometric structures made during the geometry workshop to understand concept of fractals to understand the basics of geometry respectively.
