Street Elevation - AKHADA Street

Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat are the last pair of Ghats on the North bank of the Ganga. This area was considered to be the entrance gate to the city of Banaras. Raj Ghat defines the Northern extent of Banaras. It is historically important as it was once the seat of Kashi Naresh, the King of Kashi. Although in recent history, the King shifted his palace and court across the river to the South bank of Ganga. The largest temple on Raj Ghat is the Ravidas temple which is famous for its myth and people living in the settlements along these ghats visit the temple often. Rani Ghat was named after the Queen when the Nawab ofLucknow built a palace for her on the banks of the ghat because she fell in love with the serenity along the banks of the river. The annexation of the British in the early 1900 led to a shift in the city fabric along these ghats which were then occupied by boatmen and lower caste communities. The ghats cater to a number of activities that might be very different from what happens on other ghats. Here, the day begins with the people coming in to bathe in the sacred river. People come to the ghats and set up their shops hoping to make sale which would suffice their needs for the day. Children play on the platforms and liven the atmosphere. As the sun rises the atmosphere settles and people and animals become relaxed. People play cards, smoke, chat and relax under the shade of huge trees along the ghats. These trees become the nodes of activity and form the soul of the space. Evenings at the ghat are filled with enthusiasm as the kids from the communities come down to play cricket and other local games. The sky is filled with colours as the kites soar high and the kids are filled with joy.

The main attraction of this street is akhada . This Akhada is directly connected to the rajghat and it is the best place for morning visit where the people can do healthy activities like yoga, taking a bath, pooja path, etc on the bank of river. Most of men living on rajghat visit akhada every morning to do workout after taking bath and pooja path. This is how they start their day. The street is very narrow, linked to other narrow streets. The street is almost 2 to 3 meter wide. All houses on street are very closely spaced and connected. Every house in street is almost 2 to 3 stories high. And also it has central courtyard in it. There is at least one temple in each street. The people in Varanasi lives in a cluster like all sahanis people and all bhahmans peopl have their different clusters. But in this street, they have brahmans houses as well as sahanis houses.

Activities on ghat (around Akhada)

In Varanasi for construction of houses people have use the materials like lakhodia bricks which are the small size bricks, stone, wood, bari for plastering the wall. Bari is the plastering material made out of Jaggery, Chuna, Yoggert etc. Slab is made of stone which is almost 300 mm thick and supported on the wooden spanning members, that spanning members are supported on the wall by the wall beam made of wood. now-a-days due to lack of timber steel girder are used everywhere in Varanasi. Balconies are cantilevered 600 at the most and are supported by stone brackets. these stone brackets were supported by the stone columns which are hide inside the wall. wall has the stone band which is running across each and every wall at 1200 from the ground floor to tie the whole structure and restrict the shear.

KGN AS A CHOWK KGN is one of most busiest nodes, and is considered to be one of the major junctions. Presence of a local market on this chowk attracts many locals at this particular junction, adding to the overall footprint of the area. This junction is the confluence of three important roads, which further leads to Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat. Since Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat are important places for worshiping and performing rituals. This node is used for the access of the Ghats, making it a daily commute route for the locals and the visitors as well.

NAVIK CLUSTER

Stories from the Ganga bank - Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat

Naviks are the boatmen who are paid by the people to carry them across an area of water in a small boat. naviks house was located at comfortable distances from both the main street as well as the ghat. The structure itself was double storeyed with an accessible terrace with the naviks entire family residing in the house. The lanes leading up to the house were extremely narrow and the one leading towards the ghat was quite narrow as well. The strucure was surrounded with other houses creatng a rather choked or tightly packed environment to live in. Naviks usually built their own boats which. A lot of space was needed for thhis activity and the naviks used up some of the space on the ghats for this activity. The house was at an elevation from the ghats and had a straight narrow lane leading towards the steps to climb down towards the boat making space on the ghats.

The history of Shri Ravidas Mandir Shri Guru Ravidas Mandir, is one of the largest temple complexes on the Ghats of Varanasi. It is the only major pligrimage point on Raj ghat. The Grand temple of cobbler-saint Ravidas is to first made here in medieval age. Rajghat used to be the residence of the kings, the seat of Kashi Naresh. The myth says that being a low born Ravidas wasn’t allowed to worship at the ghat by the priests. When asked to prove his devotion towards the gods, by the king, Ravidas made a stone float on the ganga. Seeing the miracle The King understood of Ravidas’s true devotion to the Gods and gave up his palce on the bank, The Raj Ghat to Ravidas for his worship.

Life on Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat

SECTION

PLAN AND ELEVATION

Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat are flocked by locals, Ghat merchants, Fishermen, and boatsmen who live nearby.

The activities on Raj and Rani ghat are diffrent in nature from other Ghats of Varanasi. The people who reside in the narrow lanes leading from the ghats, are the common people of Varanasi. The boatmen, the wood cutters, people of the lowest economic strat live here. But the Ghats being fairly recently made are capable to host activities that other ghats can not. The local market and children playing are the most common scenes here. The bank along Raj Ghat and Rani Ghat act as a dock for the boats the ferry in the Ganga. the life on the Raj ghat is that of normal people, away from the religious narrative of the city more towards the reality of its people.

Boat Making on the ghats of Varanasi The Ravidas temple being the largest temple on the Raj Ghat is visited by the people very often. Various variety of activities are catered on both the Raj and Rani Ghat. The ghat also has many varieties which differ from the activities

Glimpse of Raj and Rani Ghat

The boatmen in Varanasi make their own boats on the ghats. Locally available Sagwan wood (Sagu) is used for making the boats. It takes around two to three months to make a boat. Initially, a scaffolding (Dhancha) is made. Wood is laid parallel on the ground and the boat is made above that. A wooden spine made of wooden planks is made and tied at the ends for a few days so that a curved spine could support the boat. Every piece on the boat is connected using clamps(Jali). Waste steel from the construcion site is used to make the formwork of the boat using hammering only. Wooden planks are then tied to the metallic formwork from using the clamps. A few boats are also installed with a motor. The boats are painted by the advertising companies for free.
