Kherwadi Social Welfare Association, an organization founded in 1928, by Late B.G. Kher and is today, amongst India’s largest NGOs in the livelihoods space, with a successful track record of over 16 years. It was established for, and works for youth who do not complete school, and hence have little livelihood opportunities, often ending up as casual labour in urban or rural areas. The new “Parishramalaya” or proposed vocational centre, a seven storey structure is envisaged to provide a unique environment and spaces that focus on fostering a better quality of training and learning. The centre has been visualized as a think tank, in order to set a bench mark and administer all their growing programmes and projects such as; Balwadi, library, multimedia room, couselling room, retailing class, beautician’s training centre, english speaking classes, community hall, etc, under one roof.

The building has been evolved to create liveable overhanging spaces and external galleries as against the conventional artifically glazed structures in Bombay city. For example, the west facade of the building consists of several surfaces and voids, private and semi-public spaces, in the form of bay windows and balconies. Situated in the suburbs of Bombay city, this building expresses itself with an architectural skyline ironical to its surroundings.

HOUSE FOR MR. VIJAY GOKHALE AT MHATROLI, ALIBAUG
Located in Mhatroli, Alibaug, this small holiday home, was designed for a client who is passionate about gardening.
AXONOMETRIC PLAN OF STUDY MODEL
1
The primary concept of design was to center the house around a large Banyan tree, being seclusive in nature and inclusive in its presence. Meaning, as you enter the house through the main road, the privacy of the intimate spaces are ensured, however, as you go around the house, the family spaces reveal itself, thus achieving an inward looking structure. Laterite blocks add to the rich red texture of the exterior, and reclaimed wood has been used for the fenestration elements. All the spaces are capped by a simple L-shaped, mangalore tiled hipped roof, that expresses the human scale at the entrance verandahs.

NAYA RAIPUR MODEL HIGH SCHOOL AT NAYA RAIPUR, CHATTISGARH
In order to understand Chattisgarh and its new capital, Naya Raipur, it was essential to understand its context, within a culture rich with ancient traditions and arts amidst a naturally beautiful landscape. Reflecting these ideals and the methodologies thus sets the platform for the concept of education and the kind of school one envisages for. To design a setting for the student to learn without boundaries, build relationships, nurture life skills forms the main concept of the school with learning, community and environment as its design principles. The masterplan of the school designed such that it maintains a “soft heart of the school while all the built functions were pushed to the periphery of the site to form a hard urban edge. This soft heart was designed to be a space where the principles of learning with nature and community are inculcated. Holding the amphitheatre and the central quandrangle this green, landscaped heart also received the spaces of learning, living and community making it a seamless public space. It is envisioned as an exciting playscape that offers a natural learning environment blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors.
The masterplan was further refined based on the inputs shared by NRDA(Naya Raipur Development Authority). The key features being; • Seamless pedestrian movement within the school plots- The site was always seen as a Green Template, an ecopark with a wide range of outdoor expriences linked with nature and healthy lifestyle. The Greenway/Skywalk was thus established, linking the two disparate sites in a continous safe green band. • Seamless intergration of housing on the western plot- The design focuses on building a small community with a vibrant inner life. The housing plugs into the edges of the site plan breaking up in to quieter inner spaces. • Sports track and field aligned with the plot • Bus drop-off in a concentrated location within the site- The bus drop off is now locked in between the Housing and School, such that it has a high visibility and connection towards the main road as well as paves a way for de-clustered pathway for circulation.

CHATTISGARH SWAMI VIVEKANAND TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY AT BHILLAI, CHATTISGARH
An educational campus for learning at higher levels has multifaceted responsibilities which stretch from imparting high quality education to its students and formulating an individual’s future to strong economic and environmental impacts on its surroundings. The Site for CSVTU is located around 8.5km from the Bhilai, which is 32 km to the west of Raipur in Chattisgarh. The city of Bhilai which has its roots in the old Bhil tribes of Chhattisgarh, is today the second largest city in the state of Chhattisgarh. The design concepts for the university are a clear reflection of these ideals and growth of the city of Bhilai. The design was evolved around the existing Administration Building, by creating a central node along its axis and establishing a 5 minute walking distance between all its functions and creating a walkable pedestrian environment.

Located in a 15 acre farm plot laden with Mango and Coconut trees, in the outskirts of Mumbai city, this holiday home has been designed to serve as a typical Maharashtrian “Wadi in terms of space planning yet retaining its contemporary modern outlook. Various requirements were put forth by the client, Mrs. Juhi Chawla, which included, a common exclusive Yoga Terrace, an office room and Vaastu compliant as well. Several options were made catering to the above varied aspects.
HOLIDAY HOME FOR MRS. JUHI CHAWLA AT WADA, THANE
OPTION 1: The entrance to the house is along the North side, with the two finger like Bedroom and Kitchen blocks, forming a central family courtyard. The courtyard is also shielded on one side by an architectural stair. The yoga terrace on the top floor, faces the view of the hills on the South. OPTION 2: In this particular option, the Living and Dining block sticks out as a standalone island, held together by the Bedrooms, thus forming two courtyards, one being the public entrance courtyard and the second one being the private court for the family.

CONVENTION CENTRE COMPLEX AT GHANTAGHAR, JABALPUR
23
The proposal for a Convention Centre, seeks to reinforce the image of Jabalpur as a Cultural Centreplace. The Convention Centre is envisaged not just as an icon for the Smart City, but also as a place for the people of Jabalpur. The primary design concept was to establish a strong pedestrian connection between the existing greenway and the main road on the east side, through a common public plaza, which can serve a multitude of functions on different occasions such as cultural events, handicraft fairs and music festivals. The central public plaza, the amphitheatre at the junction of the two roads and the various terraces on the respective buildings, connect the entire complex at the street level, and create better spaces for the community.

The 40 key Hotel, stands as a linear mass, along the axis of the Iconic Clock tower. The Hotel Lobby, along the North-South axis is perceived as a seamless space, punctured only along the pedestrian crossover. A triple height atrium, was designed, which was walled by a jaali on the West Side, thus allowing filtered light to enter through the spaces. The passage along the rooms open out into this atrium, such that the people walking along the corridor can look down towards the Hotel Lobby. The two service blocks rise along the same axis, and break the long facade of the Jaali. The form of the Hotel was completed with the addition of the two triangular balconies a the two ends. A central service floor was introduced on the third floor, which took care of the routing of the various service ducts. This particular floor was glazed, in order to visualise the Hotel as a floating mass. Finally, the terrace of the Hotel, served as a “green terrace”, to encourage community interaction. Solar Panels were introduced on the roof, thereby aiding energy generation and reducing the load on the city grid.

Nestled in the Himalayas, in Ramgargh, Nainital, this house is a private retreat for a client. The primary concept of design was to blend the various levels of the house into the landscape, thereby resonating the undulating backdrop. The roofs become ramps mimicking the terrain of the mountains around. Pea plantations, small plum trees and other smaller shrubs and orchards, form a blanket around the house, and adorn the terrain in front.
HOLIDAY HOME FOR MR. RANBIR SINGH AT RAMGARGH, NAINITAL
31
Each bedroom opens onto a deck, providing great views towards the valley below. Glass skylights on the top floor, flood the master bedroom, master toilet and the library with natural light. The walk-on ramps are finished in local stone, and the gargoyles adjoining the roof, drains storm water during monsoon, thereby facilitating water harvesting. Provision for landscaping is also provided along these gargoyles.
SITE PLAN
The entry opens out to a triple height space formed by the ramps that negotiate the level difference, also defining the cheif facade of the building with a slender pinewood staircase connecting all the levels of the house. Retaining walls and concrete columns support the structure and fenestration has been designed to maximise natural light as well as the views towards the valley. A very minimal approach was carried out with the finishing, walls finished in white paint, floors with simple white terrazo and grey cement tiles, and local stone on the retaining walls.

PRODUCTION OFFICE FOR BREATHLESS FILMS AT SANTACRUZ, MUMBAI
Designed for a leading production house in Mumbai, this office was conceived as a quirky informal space. The first main space you see once you enter, is the reception with a large monolith of a desk finished in veneer greeting you. The central space that houses the workstations, also doubles up as a practice area for the actors and their counterparts, with the raised informal conference room being the stage. The walls were finished in machine cut bricks, floors in cement IPS and the raised stage in ply and laminate. Staggering tubelights, funky stage lights that illuminate the spaces and trippy tiles and mirrors on bathroom walls were other smaller details that added to the fun vibe of the office, yet maintaining the working atmosphere.

LEMONLEAF BAR AND PAN ASIAN RESTAURANT AT ANDHERI, MUMBAI
Lemonleaf Restaurant and Bar in Andheri, Mumbai dons an Asian Garage cum Gastro-pub avatar combining a rustic and rugged indoor seating and a themed funky bar. The ambience of this restaurant was given an eccentric and whimsical avatar. Three different types of seating was designed, indoor seating, outdoor seating and a unique community table on a raised platform for large groups. The walls were left rough devoid of paint, with manga posters and paintings adorning them. A quintessential Japanese style tea house table propped on the feature wall, exclusively designed laminates on tables, Japanese style split painting in the community table area and cane and fabric lights were some of the smaller details that gave the entire space an Asian theme.

The design was evolved in tandem with the company’s profile, a cinema and entertainment ticketing website. This particular office served as a contact/call center and therefore needed a fun vibe. The spillout space or cafeteria was given an offbeat makeover, with chequered plate cladded walls, bright chrome yellow tiles, dining tables suspended from the ceiling and fabric lights in the colour of their branding. The clients also wanted whimsical designs for their bathrooms. The ladies toilet was done in an Art-Deco theme, with black and white tiles and a large mirror lit up by the typical cinema lights that added to the vintage feel of the space. The gents toilet was done in the theme of their branding. As you enter, an assymetric pattern in vitrified tiles adorns the large wall of the toilet, thereby making a statement. Similar cubicle designs and a large trough instead of a generic wash basin were other smaller details that were explored and experimented in this particular space. All in all the spaces have been designed in keeping with Book My Show’s vibrant spirit.
